Ezewuzie01: South East is landlocked. And as long as SS refuse to participate in Biafra, it remains a mirage. Only the north can break away from the country without stress but they will be landlocked too and they don't like that. The SW has the brightest prospects if they are independent. You are somehow correct. The fate of an independent South East is intrinsically linked to the South South for very strategic reasons that cannot be wished away. Without the cooperation of the territory that makes up the South South today, the SouthEast would really struggle to reach its full potential. The South South's later rejection of the Biafra project during the civil war contributed immensely to the stillbirth of the rebellion and loss of that war. |

Peter Obi is not a presidential material in my opinion. He just does not have enough depth and general acceptability for the role. Besides, he doesn't have the political clout to clinch the ticket. And his type will end up a failure like Buhari because of the 'messianic complex' he has (he may also match Buhari in the nepotism department), and such people think they know it all sotay they alienate other people's contribution and therefore end up failing politically.
I recall that even the political establishment in the southeast was initially opposed to his candidacy when Atiku selected him as running mate because they didn't see him as one that could be trusted to carry others along.
Being president isn't just about having paper qualifications. Such a person must be able to manage human relationships in order to succeed. And in that department Obi falls short abysmally. His fallout with his hand picked successor (Obiano) also says a lot about his inability to manage political capital. |

Politics › COVID-19: Allow Your Deputy To Lead – Folarin Tells Makinde by Sakamaje(op): 11:50pm On Apr 03, 2020 |
https://oyoinsight.com/covid-19-allow-your-deputy-to-lead-folarin-tells-makinde/By Adebayo Abdulrahman - April 3, 2020 147 0
The Senator representing Oyo central senatorial district, Senator Teslim Folarin has urged the Executive Governor of the Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde to allow his deputy, Engr. Remi Olaniyan lead the fight against coronavirus.
Folarin, a third-term member of the red chambers made the call to the governor on Friday morning during a live call-in program on Fresh FM monitored by OYOINSIGHT.COM
Folarin stated that he has nothing against the former Chief Medical Director of UCH, Professor Temitope Alonge holding forte as the head of the Oyo State Special Task Force On COVID-19 while the Governor recovers from Coronavirus because he is a “thoroughbred professional who is competent.”
He, however, noted this is a period of great uncertainty and the people of the state need a political figure who is physically in charge to give them hope.
In his words, “This is a period of great uncertainty that requires both the health sector professionals and importantly the political leadership to give people hope. I wonder where the deputy governor is. Where is he? Have you been seeing him? Why can’t he deputize now?
“As far as Oyo state and Nigeria at large is concerned, this is currently the biggest task for government. Seyi Makinde leading by teleconferencing isn’t enough. People want to see somebody who is in charge physically.
“What is the problem with the culture of rendering deputies irrelevant and redundant. Let the deputy governor come out now and play the role he was constitutionally elected to fill.
” All around the world, when government address Coronavirus issues; for instance in America, when Doctor Fauci (head of American center for infectious diseases) speaks, you see President Trump Standing beside him along with the Vice President. That is what it takes around the world. It is symbolic to reassure the public, why must Makinde recover before his deputy can function?” The senator said.
He also expressed his total support for a total shut down to prevent the spread of a disease that has killed thousands globally.
When questioned about the effect a total lockdown will have on the life of poor Nigerians, he said, “Look, people will not die of hunger. For now, staying alive is all that matters. You must first be alive before you talk about what to eat.”
The former gubernatorial candidate of the PDP also criticized the way the federal government is currently handling the fight against the virus and expressed worries over the lack of sufficient testing facilities to diagnose carriers of the disease.
He added, “I seriously doubt all these statistics about the number of infected persons being carried about in Nigeria. Until you complete adequate testing, you cannot finalize on who does or doesn’t have.
“The U.K, for instance, has promised to test at least 100,000 people by the end of April – an impressive and ambitious plan. How many people have we tested? how many do we project to have tested by that same time? what measures are being implemented to scale up testing to a much larger number than what we currently have on ground in the state and at the Federal level? These media aids are always overstepping their bounds just to create fake and elusive achievements that doesn't exist on behalf of their mostly incompetent and no achievement bosses especially his boss, Makinde. But Governor Makinde also apologozed for knowingly allowing a political rally that could have potentially endangered the lives of Oyo people in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. He even joked about the APC being the one that has the virus. He later apologized for that blunder and his fans were quick to forgive him, yet in this case he is firing that guy even after he had apologized. Is that fair? Anyway, I am not surprised because I have noticed that Makinde can never do wrong in the eyes of his fans (they are like zombies) because they hold him to very low standards compared to his peers.

https://www.insideoyo.com/coronavirus-makinde-chose-politicking-over-oyo-peoples-welfare-apc/March 23, 2020
Oyo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged Governor Seyi Makinde is handling the COVID-19 pandemic in the state with “Kid Gloves.”
The party stated this in a statement issued by AbdulAzeez Olatunde, its Publicity Secretary, on Monday and made available to InsideOyo.com.
The statement reads, ”Imagine when Lagos and Kwara States were rolling out frontal attacks of checking COVID-19 by asking their Grade levels 1-12 workers to stay at home for the next two weeks, rolled out instructions for Mosques and Churches to limit the number of worshippers and followed it up with Task force to enforce those Government Guidelines, which Oyo State has not woken up to its statutory responsibility.
“Such that Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd March, most of the worship centres operated in defiance of the containment manner of the COVID-19 because there is no Government order on them. “Instead of Oyo State Governor to face the welfare and well being of the good people of Oyo State, GOV SEYI MAKINDE chose to face Politicking and thus become arbitrator in chief of South West of Nigeria PDP, becoming political arbitrator in Ekiti PDP Affairs in Lagos, the time Oyo State needed his attention most.
“It is bad enough that a Radio station in Ibadan made its Program available on both Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd 2020 for Oyo State Commissioner for Health to come on Air to update the innocent people of Oyo STATE on the way and manner the Government is tackling COVID-19, but the Commissioner could not make it because Governor Seyi Makinde was not in town and as is the customary of SEYI MAKINDE’S Government, when he is not in town, the Governance stops hence the hands of the innocent Commissioner for Health were tied, which means Oyo State suffers.
“Another good fall out of the Program was that all the Telephone numbers rolled out by the Government of Engr SEYI MAKINDE according to the Radio respondents were not picked, which confirmed our long held observation that Engr SEYI MAKINDE was not ready for Governance.”
The main opposition party in the state, however, recommended that the Oyo State Government should adopt China approach “because they were quick in combating this stubborn contagious COVID-19, a few of their approach were shared to the world by Prof Zhong Nanshan, the leader of the Epidemiologist that overcame the stubborn COVID-19:
(1) Lockdown for few days to avoid or limit human to human transmission (2) Build Emergency Hospitals within 10 – 14 days to accommodate expect upsurge of infected people (3) Quarantine all suspected people to curtail the spread (4) Control Daily activities of the populace ie Garages,Markets, Worship Centres and Infact the streets have to be decongested for some days for SANITARY FLUSHING (5)Adequate provision of Sanitizer at the Garages and Infact all Public Spaces. (6)Working from Home options to reduce Human Contact and reduce the spread of the virus. (7)Task force to enforce the rules must be raised.” Lalasticlala Mynd44 |

Travel › Ibadan Tricycle Operators Protest Passenger Policy As 50 Defaulters Face Trial by Sakamaje(op): 7:29am On Jan 21, 2020 |
*Govt says policy to reduce accidents
By Wale Akinselure and Faith Adeoye On Jan 20, 2020
Tricycle operators in some parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday, downed tools for some hours and took to the streets in protest against the state government’s policy that prohibits taking a passenger in the front seat.
The protest saw the tricycle operators, especially those plying the New Garage-Agodi gate route, bear placards with inscriptions like “No More Fine For four passengers, please governor consider us”, “Akin Fagbemi, we don’t have anything to do again, please have mercy on us”, “Please Seyi Makinde, save us from OYRTMA who are arresting fellow driver, N50,000 is too much”.
Some of the operators took their protest to the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.
Recall that the state government, through the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), last week began enforcement of its policy mandating bike riders to convey only one passenger, restricting tricycle operators to conveying passengers only on the back seat, while commercial cab operators are to have only one passenger beside the driver.
Speaking with Tribune Online during the protest, the tricycle operators said they got the tricycles on hire purchase at over N1million hence the policy made it difficult for them to meet the returns expected of them daily.
This is as they warned that should the state government insist on the policy, the passengers will bear the consequences in increased transport fares.
Holding a placard, one of the protesters, Mr Bello Sulaimon said the money from the passenger conveyed in front was usually used to augment having to “settle” at various bus stops.
"There is no way we can make adequate returns by not having passengers sit beside us in front. When we are arrested, we are also asked to pay N50,000. Yet, we have to give N50 to security agents at Idi-Arere, Molete, Idi-Odo, Orita, New Garage, Gate, Beere, Oja-Oba and it is the money paid by the passenger in front that we give to them,” Sulaimon said.
Another tricycle operator, Mr Saheed Mukaila discarded argument of the state government that the front passenger amounted to overloading, noting that the front passenger provided the needed balance for the tricycle rider.
"It’s not profitable to continue with three passengers only at the back. Also, it’s not true that the front passengers affect our driving or causes accidents. In fact, some passengers prefer to sit in front. We get this tricycle on hire purchase price at N1.2million. It takes us two years to complete the payment. The passenger in front gives the tricycle the needed balance. Moreover, in Ijebu-ode, Ogun State, two other passengers are allowed in front,” Mukaila said.
On his part, Taiwo Adeniji lamented that he is yet to reclaim his tricycle which was impounded last Tuesday because he is unable to raise a N25,000 fine slammed on him.
“I got this tricycle by obtaining a loan. My tricycle was impounded last Tuesday and I was asked to pay N25,000. I went out that Tuesday to get money to purchase baby food, I was only able to take bottled water home for my kid. My tricycle remains at Sanyo and has not been returned till date as I have no means to raise such money,” Adeniji said.
On the consequences of the sustenance of the policy, Bamidele Okon said: “If this policy is to be sustained, the passengers will bear the brunt through an increase in fares.”
One of the operators who spoke to the Tribune Online at the Olubadan’s palace, Segun Babajide, also berated the government for the new enforcing the new policy.
He said: “Some operators were arrested at Idi-Odo and Challenge last week. They were beaten and asked to pay a fine of N50,000. How much do we make every day? If these operators don’t pay the money by Tuesday, they would be taken to court. We get this tricycle for over 1 million Naira, are we supposed to pay back by carrying just three passengers? In other states, the tricycle takes six passengers and they don’t get involved in accidents.”
Another operator, Funmilayo Anpitan, explained how they face extortion from men of Nigeria Police and Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO).
“We pay N50 to policemen at every junction we meet them. We get arrested by the police, VIO and now OYRTMA, we are tired.
“Most of us have to make a deposit of N15,000 weekly as payment for the tricycle but now we don’t even meet up because we don’t even makeup to that amount weekly. We appeal to the Olubadan to speak with the state government on our behalf, we need to be saved.”
The Olubadan who was represented by his Personal Assistant, Mr Adeola Oloko, advised the operators to respect the law and go about their job lawfully.
“The purpose of the government is to provide a conducive environment for law and order. If they must protest, they must obtain a permit from police and they must not allow street urchins to implicate them. We promise to talk to the government agency concerned,” he said.
Speaking with Tribune Online on the protest, State Commander, OYRTMA, Mr Adeoye Ayoade, explained that the state government came up with the policy to address the rate of accidents involving motorcycles, tricycles and cabs.
Since the commencement of enforcement, Adeoye said the body had impounded over 50 tricycles and their operators will face a mobile court on Tuesday.
Stating that the enforcement had been preceded with months of sensitising the vehicle operators, Adeoye said there was no going back on the policy.
“The policy is to reduce the rate of accidents. For motorcycle, it is one passenger; for a tricycle, you must not carry any passenger in front; for Micra, you must not carry more than one passenger in front.
“In December 2019 alone, we recorded about 50 accident cases in Ibadan alone and deaths were recorded in at least 30 cases. Most of the accidents are due to overloading and over speeding. With one passenger, they are able to elongate the lifespan of their vehicles.
“We started enforcement last week that any bike, Marwa, Micra caught flouting this policy of overloading will be impounded. Those already arrested will face the mobile court tomorrow.
“We have a lot arrested at our operational headquarters, Sanyo. We have close to 50 tricycles at our Sanyo headquarters, and many others here at our headquarters too.
“Even if they make a million a day, it does not worth the loss of any life. It is only the person that returns home safe that can say he or she has achieved,” Adeoye said. https://tribuneonlineng.com/ibadan-tricycle-operators-protest-passenger-policy-as-50-defaulters-face-trial-tuesday/
