It is no problem at all if you attend the interview few months before the conference date. You only cannot use that visa to travel if and when you're issued, before the conference start date.

The most important aspect is payment for attendance which shows commitment on your part.

The IV documents depends on individual organizers. While some will send you the IV indicating you paid already, others do send an IV seperate from payment receipt which the attendee alone can request for and it would be sent to his/her e-mail or post as the case maybe.

Secondly, you can apply for the conference at any time. The earlier the better to have an early appointment time.

Whichever way you put it, the main purpose of attendance if it is to serve your interest and that of the firm you represent, then you should have no problem convincing the VO.

* will it sound WISE or UNWISE to attend a ''Marketing Conference'' while working for a security system company?

I am married , two Kids , earn 380 k work with an Oil and Gas company as a Depot Manager ,Got a letter of invitation and documents from my cousin who is a citizen and was Born in America. Now to your Question Please look for a conference that is related to what you do that will be better as I noticed a Man was issued Visa that same day I was denied and he was going to attend a conference in Minnesota
