Politics › Nigerian Couple Arrested With Drugs In India by Salewa97(op): 2:23am On Aug 01, 2022 |
The anti-narcotics Indian police in Pune city have apprehended a Nigerian couple in possession of cocaine and mephedrone worth over Rs 1.2 crore (approximately over N62million).
The duo, Iyi Ugochukwu Emmanuel and Enebeli Omamma Vivian were arrested in a residential society, Baner and the drugs caught with them were seized by the anti-narcotics operatives.
According to Times of India, detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Cell received an intelligence about suspected drug criminals in Baner. After the primary investigation, a co-ordinated raid was launched in an upmarket residential society on Tuesday morning, where the two suspects lived.
In the raid, police allegedly seized 664 grams of mephedrone also known as Meow Meow, valued at Rs 96 lakh in international market, and 201 grams of cocaine worth more than Rs 30 lakh.
The 43-year-old Emmanuel and 30-year-old Vivian were reported to be doing clothing business in India and entered the Asian country through business visas separately.
Additional commissioner of police (crime) Ramnath Pokale said, “Emmanuel and Vivian came to India on business visas years ago. We are verifying their details with the authorities and the source of the drugs. The duo claimed they are in the garment business.”
In another report, a senior police officer, Inspector Vinayak Gaikwad Gaikwad told the newspaper, “Their passport is valid and the man has been frequently visiting India on a business visa since 2012. He has visited Mumbai and Pune.”
“The duo brought drugs to sell in Pune city. They have been staying in the flat for the last one year. We are verifying to whom they were selling the drugs.”
The report also said on July 22, anti-narcotics cell officials had arrested a 44-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Kenney Anyakora from a house in Khadki.
“We were working on several clues about Nigerians and other nationals in drug trafficking, and tasted success in these two raids.”
“Primary probe suggests Emmanuel had come on a commercial visa to India on the pretext of selling items like garments and shoes. He was arrested in a drugs case in 2018 after which his passport was impounded. He was released on bail in 2019. We have come to know that Vivian, too, came to India on a commercial visa recently,” said Gaikwad. Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/07/nigerian-couple-arrested-with-drugs-in-india/amp/

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested the second foreign national in the Mumbai cruise drug bust case, the agency said on Sunday. “A team of NCB Mumbai intercepted one Nigerian national namely Okaro Ouzama along with an intermediate quantity of Cocaine, yesterday,” NCB zonal chief Sameer Wankhede told news agency ANI.
Ouzama was arrested from Goregaon and will be produced in court soon, NCB said, adding that he is considered to be a “key person” in the ongoing investigation in the cruise drugs bust case. The agency has so far arrested 20 people in connection with the case.
The agency had raided a Cordelia Cruise ship which was on its way to Goa from Mumbai at mid-sea on the night of October 2. Eight people, including Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan, Arbaz Merchant, and Munmun Dhameccha, were first detained for questioning and later arrested on October 3. The three accused have been sent to 14-day judicial custody rejecting NCB’s appeal for remand.
The agency claims to have recovered 13 grams of cocaine, 5 grams of mephedrone, 22 pills of ecstasy -- in “intermediate quantities”, and 21 grams of charas, in “small quantity”, and cash to the tune of ₹1.33 lakh during their raid on the cruise ship.
NCB has also arrested another Nigerian national, Chinedu Igwe, from suburban Andheri on October 7, and claimed that 40 tablets of Ecstasy were found from his possession. On the same day the agency arrested one Achit Kumar from suburban Powai and claimed he was in possession of a small quantity of "hydroponic weed alias multi-strain cannabis".

Crime › Nigerian Businessman Bags 7 Years Jail Term For Importing Cocaine by Salewa97(op): 2:54pm On Aug 02, 2021 |
Justice Ayokunle Faji of a Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced a middle-aged man, Obidike Onodyer, to seven years imprisonment for importing 485 grammes of cocaine into Nigeria. In sentencing the convict, the judge condemned his criminal act and ordered that the prison term should start from November 2018 when his bail was revoked.
Besides, the convict’s international passport which he fraudulently acquired was impounded by the court and forfeited to the Federal Government.
Onodyer was arrested by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on August 5, 2015 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during the outward clearance of passengers on Royal Air Maroc from Brazil enroute Casablanca to Lagos.
The NDLEA through one of its prosecutor, Mrs. Juliana Imaobong Iraobuchi subsequently filed a count charge against Onodyer for unlawful importation of the banned substance in a charge marked FHC/L/40c/15 dated 29th September, 2015.
Following his arraignment, the defendant denied the alleged offence following which he was admitted to bail by the court. However, while on bail,
Onodyer committed another offence by fradulently securing another international passport to replace the one confiscated on the order of the court.
He later jumped bail and the court later revoked his bail pending his re-arrest. Upon his re-arrest in November 2018, Justice Faji ordered his remand in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS).
On resumption of his trial, Onodyer was said to have committed another offence by procuring fake medical certificate to apply for bail on medical ground, but the prosecutor was able to prove that the certificate was forged. Most Nigeria first instinct is always to see “what might go wrong” and not “what might be right”. Body cam is not only for bribe seeking officers, it could also be good as a security system to track traffic offenders and serve as a real-time community monitoring system. This is a good step by Sanwoolu. They can now improve on it by later but at least it’s a right step. |
