HealthRe: 11 Health Habits That Will Help You Live To 100 by Sam94(op): 7:32am On May 09, 2015
realtestament:
YOGA. Weight loss, a strong and flexible body, glowing beautiful skin, peaceful mind, good health – whatever you may be looking for, yoga has it on offer. However, very often, yoga is only partially understood as being limited to asanas (yoga poses). As such, its benefits are only perceived to be at the body level and we fail to realize the immense benefits yoga offers in uniting the body, mind and breath. When you are in harmony, the journey through life is calmer, happier and more fulfilling.
With all this and much more to offer, the benefits of yoga are felt in a profound yet subtle manner
No Doubt! well said!

1. Don't retire. "Evidence shows that in societies where people stop working abruptly, the incidence of obesity and chronic disease increase after retirement," says Luigi Ferrucci, director of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging.

2. Floss every day. That may help keep your arteries healthy. A 2008 New York University study showed that daily flossing reduced the amount of gum-disease-causing bacteria in the mouth. This bacteria is thought to enter the bloodstream and trigger inflammation in the arteries, a major risk factor for heart disease.

3. Move around. "Exercise is the only real fountain of youth that exists," says Jay Olshansky, a professor of medicine and aging researcher at the University of Illinois at Chicago. "It's like the oil and lube job for your car. You don't have to do it, but your car will definitely run better."
Study after study has documented the benefits of exercise to improve your mood, mental acuity, balance, muscle mass, and bones.

4. Eat a fiber-rich cereal for breakfast. Getting a serving of whole-grains, especially in the morning, appears to help older folks maintain stable blood sugar levels throughout the day, according to a recent study conducted by Ferrucci and his colleagues. "Those who do this have a lower incidence of diabetes, a known accelerator of aging," he says.

5. Get at least six hours of shut-eye. Instead of skimping on sleep to add more hours to your day, get more to add years to your life. "Sleep is one of the most important functions that our body uses to regulate and heal cells," says Ferrucci.

6. Consume whole foods, not supplements. Strong evidence suggests that people who have high blood levels of certain nutrients—selenium, beta-carotene, vitamins C and E—age much better and have a slower rate of cognitive decline. Unfortunately, there's no evidence that taking pills with these nutrients provides those ant aging benefits.
Avoid nutrient-lacking white foods (breads, flour, sugar) and go for all those colourful fruits and vegetables and dark whole-grain breads and cereals with their host of hidden nutrients.

7. Be less neurotic. It may work for Woody Allen, who infuses his worries with a healthy dose of humour, but the rest of us neurotics may want to find a new way to deal with stress. "We have a new study coming out that shows that centenarians tend not to internalize things or dwell on their troubles," says Perls. "They are great at rolling with the punches." If this inborn trait is hard to overcome, find better ways to manage when you're stressed: Yoga, exercise, meditation, tai chi, or just deep breathing for a few moments are all good. Ruminating, eating chips in front of the TV, binge drinking? Bad, very bad.

8. Live like a Seventh Day Adventist. Americans who define themselves as Seventh Day Adventists have an average life expectancy of 89, about a decade longer than the average American.
One of the basic tenets of the religion is that it's important to cherish the body that's on loan from God, which means no smoking, alcohol abuse, or overindulging in sweets. Followers typically stick to a vegetarian diet based on fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts, and get plenty of exercise. They're also very focused on family and community.

9. Be a creature of habit. Centenarians tend to live by strict routines, says Olshansky, eating the same kind of diet and doing the same kinds of activities their whole lives. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day is another good habit to keep your body in the steady equilibrium that can be easily disrupted as you get on in years

10. Stay connected. Having regular social contacts with friends and loved ones is key to avoiding depression, which can lead to premature death, something that's particularly prevalent in elderly widows and widowers.

11. Be conscientious. The strongest personality predictor of a long life is conscientiousness—that is, being prudent, persistent, and well organized, according to The Longevity Project, co-authored by Howard Friedman and Leslie Martin.

Hope you all have a peaceful and healthy life!!

HealthTips For Protecting Your Eyes by Sam94(op): 8:18am On Apr 24, 2015
To protect your eyesight and keep your eyes healthy as you age, consider these simple guidelines:

1. Find out if you are at higher risk for eye diseases. Be aware of your family's health history. Do you or any of your family suffer from diabetes or have a history of high blood pressure? Regular eye exams are particularly important, because an early diagnosis can limit any vision loss and help preserve your eyesight.

2. Have regular physical exams to check for diabetes and high blood pressure. If left untreated, these diseases can cause eye problems. In particular, diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

3. Look for warning signs of changes in your vision. If you start noticing changes in your vision, see your eye doctor immediately. Some trouble signs to look for include double vision, hazy vision and difficulty seeing in low light conditions. Other signs to look for are frequent flashes of light, floaters, and eye pain and swelling. All of these can indicate a potential eye health problem that demands immediate attention.

4. Exercise more frequently. According to the AAO, some studies suggest that regular exercise — such as walking — can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70 percent.

5. Protect your eyes from harmful UV light
. You should always wear sunglasses with proper UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. This may help reduce your risk of cataracts and other eye damage.

6. Eat a healthy and balanced diet. Numerous studies have shown that antioxidants can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. These antioxidants are obtained from eating a diet containing plentiful amounts of fruits and colorful or dark green vegetables.
Studies also have shown that eating fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids may reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration. Also, consider supplementing your diet with eye vitamins to make sure you are getting adequate amounts of the nutrients you need to keep your eyes healthy.

7. Get your eyes checked at least every two years. A comprehensive eye exam, including dilating your pupils, can determine your risk for major eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, which has no early warning signs or symptoms. An eye exam also can ensure that your prescription foreyeglasses or contact lenses is up to date.

8. Don't smoke. The many dangers of smoking have been well documented. When it comes to eye health, people who smoke are at greater risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.

In addition to following these guidelines, be sure to wear safety glasses when working with tools or participating in active sports to help prevent eye injuries that potentially could cause permanent vision loss.
It's true that following these steps is no guarantee of perfect vision throughout your lifetime. But maintaining a healthy lifestyle and having regular eye exams will certainly decrease your risk of developing a sight-stealing eye problem that otherwise might have been prevented.

HealthSun Effects On Skin! by Sam94(op): 7:36am On Apr 22, 2015
Benefits of Sunlight

• A dietary supplement can supply vitamin D without the mutagenic effect, but bypasses natural mechanisms that would prevent overdoses of vitamin D generated internally from sunlight.
• Vitamin D has a wide range of positive health effects, which include strengthening bones and possibly inhibiting the growth of some cancers.
• UV exposure also has positive effects for endorphin levels.
• Visible sunlight to the eyes gives health benefits through its association with the timing of melatonin synthesis, maintenance of normal and robust circadian rhythms, and reduced risk of seasonal affective disorder.

Adverse Effects of Sunlight

• The ultraviolet radiation in sunlight has both positive and negative health effects, as it is both a principal source of vitamin D3 and a mutagen.
• Long-term sunlight exposure is known to be associated with the development of skin cancer, skin aging, immune suppression, and eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration.
• Short-term over-exposure is the cause of sunburn, snow blindness, and solar retinopathy.

Numerous public health organizations state that there needs to be a balance between the risks of having too much sunlight or too little.

How to protect yourself from bad Effects

• Slip on proper clothes: Have proper clothes which exposes as less as possible of your skin. If you are on a beach or water park make sure you don’t stay under sunlight for too long.
• Slip on a hat
• Apply sunscreen: Apply sunscreen however sunscreen alone will not protect you so make sure you have scarf or a hat, shades and proper clothes on.
• Seek shade: Escape from the sunlight as much as possible when its too warm

TravelRe: Pictures That Will Make You Visit India! :) by Sam94(op):
Seems like you have got a lot of wrong information about India.
We Indians ourselves face colour/race discrimination in other countries.
The society consists mainly educated people who would never judge or ASSAULT you because you are from a certain country.

People from all countries including West African countries are seen in metro cities. They not just visit to see India, they come here to stay for business purposes or to get treatment. The photos depicts rich heritage, and if you communicate with the locals you will just be treated like family. India is known for that.

Apart from that, not even a single country can be called safe if heard. There are stories. even USA or any country you take example of has been in the news for rapes, rampant and other crimes.
HealthWhat Are Nigeria's Most Chronic Diseases? by Sam94(op): 12:11pm On Apr 20, 2015
Hi folks

What are the country's most chronic diseases (eg. heart disease, cancer)?

In India its cardiovascular diseases, mental health disorders, diabetes, and cancer.
HealthSimple Signs Of Cardiovascular Diseases by Sam94(op): 7:40am On Apr 20, 2015
Symptoms suggestive of cardiovascular conditions include

• Chest Pain — The specific type and location of pain can tell a lot about its cause. For example, a tightness or squeezing sensation in the chest often indicates angina or heart attack . On the other hand, chest pain that gets worse when lying down and doesn’t worsen with exertion is more likely to be a symptom of pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart.

• Leg Pain —Peripheral vascular disease, often leads to cramping and fatigue in the legs with exertion.

• Shortness of Breath —Fluid backing up into the lungs from a failing heart leads to shortness of breath, which is often made worse by laying down. While shortness of breath is common to many types of cardiovascular conditions, it is no by no means limited to CVD. The symptom is very common, for example, in lung disease.

• Fatigue —Fatigue is another common symptom of cardiovascular disease, presumably caused by insufficient blood flow to the muscles along with the decreased availability of oxygen due to fluid in the lungs.

• Palpitations —A heart that is beating at an unusual force, rate, or rhythm, could just be an indication of anxiety or too much caffeine. However, abnormal heartbeats—especially if they occur in conjunction with other symptoms like fatigue or fainting—could hint at a more serious underlying condition such as an arrhythmia .

• Light-headedness and Fainting — Insufficient blood flow to the brain can cause light-headedness or fainting. This may be due to abnormal heart rate or rhythm, or to insufficient cardiac output. Of course, fainting may have many other causes ranging from anxiety to epilepsy, and in most individuals is not due to CVD.

Signs suggestive of cardiovascular conditions include:

• Pale, clammy appearance
• Cyanosis (blue tinge to the skin), particularly in the extremities
• Rapid or shallow breathing
• Rapid and/or irregular heart rate
• High or low blood pressure
• Swollen veins in the neck
• Swelling in the feet and ankles
• Abnormalities in the retina (back of the eye)
• Enlarged heart (measured by placing hand on chest)
• Extra or abnormal heart sounds (via stethoscope)
• Fluid in the lungs (via stethoscope)
• Abnormal sounds of arterial blood flow throughout the body (via stethoscope)
• Pulsating abdominal mass (aortic aneurysm)
• Cool extremities
• Reduced or absent pulses in the extremities

Stay fit with a regular checkup and not avoiding these signs!

BusinessWhy India As A Healthcare Destination? by Sam94(op): 6:43am On Apr 18, 2015
India is placed among the top three medical tourism destinations in Asia, mainly due to the low cost of treatment, quality healthcare infrastructure and availability of highly-skilled doctors.

Advantages for medical treatment in India include:
1. reduced costs,

2. the availability of latest medical technologies, a growing compliance on international quality standards,

3. little to no time of waiting and

4. the fact that foreigners are less likely to face a language barrier in India.

Lower treatment cost does not necessarily mean lower healthcare standards.
There are 21 JCI accredited hospitals in India and growing.

A separate study by ASSOCHAM reported that the year 2011 saw 850,000 medical tourists in India
and projected that by 2015 this number would rise to 3,200,000.

TravelPictures That Will Make You Visit India! :) by Sam94(op):
India, it is often said, is not a country, but a continent. Stretching from the frozen summits of the Himalayas to the tropical greenery of Kerala, its expansive borders encompass an incomparable range of landscapes, cultures and people.

Many first-time visitors find themselves unable to see past such glaring disparities. Others come expecting a timeless ascetic wonderland and are surprised to encounter one of the most materialistic societies on the planet. Still more find themselves intimidated by what may seem, initially, an incomprehensible and bewildering continent. But for all its jarring juxtapositions, intractable paradoxes and frustrations, India remains an utterly compelling destination. Intricate and worn, its distinctive patina – the stream of life in its crowded bazaars, the ubiquitous filmi music, the pungent melange of diesel fumes, cooking spices, dust and dung smoke – casts a spell that few forget from the moment they step off a plane. Love it or hate it – and most travellers oscillate between the two – India will shift the way you see the world.
