MetaPhysical: Yoruba is not religious, we are spiritual.
When Islam came to Yorubaland we spiritualized it. We adhered to the spirit of Islam and observed its rituals far more deeper than others.
When Christianity came to Yorubaland we spiritualized that also. Yoruba created African Church. We created Aladura. We created Cele. Even in Penetecostal and Evangelism we are at fore front.
This is because we are a spiritual race.
The opposite of religious tolerance is religious intolerance. A denial of diversity, a state of insufficiency.
Yoruba is sufficient in its belief of God and divinities as well humanities.
Those who are religious are deficient in the ethos of creation, life and death. They abuse it in extreme.
Religious societies assume and impose authority over creation and life, destroy life indiscriminately and refuse to honor their dead.
Yoruba believes strongly in the essence of gods and creation, in live & let live and honors ancestors via Egungun cult. Gbam! EOD. |

TAO11: Professor S. Adebanji Akintoye once made a statement (in an interview with the Dawn Commision) to the fact that in fact we actually rank #1 in the whole wide world in that regard.
I am quite certain that his statement in that regard is backed by research studies. A scholar of his stature doesn’t make whimsical wishful statements.
cc: Sammy07 True, Some countries need to emulate how Yoruba were able to live peacefully. BTW, I said it earlier that some men (black and white) came to Ondo town few years ago to do a research related to this. African studies department or so, cos we were given some survey to answer on paper. they also went to palace and I learnt they went to Ede earlier. |

Cherez: Yeah, FON has a rship with the Yoruba nation but not Yoruba Going by this, would you agree with me that the Yoruba isn't a tribe but a nation? Yoruba is a conglomerate of different tribes brought together by military interest. If I get you right which I don't know if to agree with you or not. This is what I understand. Yoruba is an Ethnic group. All the different dialects are tribes including Igala and Itshekiri and Olukunmi plus those in different countries. but when everyone comes together to unite and form a country is term Yoruba Nation. |

it means all party must field their candidate from Anambra south.
be it pdp be it Apc be it apga be it ypp that's what it means You guys should read what I wrote with understanding. I don't know how you guys dey play politics. I said Play your cards well and zoning will do justice to it. it's not a must all party should field from a particular senatorial district. It depends on the people who to vote or not. I gave you example of Ondo state, where different parties were elected in different senatorial districts. Everything for your side nah "Apc / PDP MUST" "the Fg MUST.. " Everytime MUST. what is MUST, when you don't play your cards well? |

ChoCho54: The king is dead and there's trouble in the land.
Back to topic, the reason for the religious tolerance among Yorubas is because they discovered early that spirituality is different from religious denomination. An average Yoruba has total faith in Christianity Islam and ATR and adheres to all at the same time. He benefits from the spiritual experience of all for his own benefit because indeed, all have their spiritual benefit if you are ready to get on the path of truth.
Unlike Islamic fundamentalism of the North, Yorubas are welcoming to all. Keep shut the 2nd one is incorrect. Which trouble? You're not a Yoruba girl. |

RichBoy247: I am a Muslim. I went to Catholic schools, and today, I am married to a Christian. She goes to Church with the kids, while I go to the Mosque. I grew up in Yaba in an extended family house with uncles, aunties, cousins and other relations who are RCCG, CCC, CAC,Deeper Life, e.t.c.
Sometimes when aunty Bose is going to her CCC, I follow her, when uncle Segun is going to Deeper Life, I follow him. I did my first Baptism in Primary 4 at St Dominic's Church. When MFM started reigning in the early 90s, I was following uncle Musibau to MFM and I got baptized again in 1994. When I wanted to get married to my wife at Winners Chapel, I was baptized again after all, you cannot have too much of Jesus in your life.
The best periods of the year for me are weeks to the Children Harvest in CCC and C & S because one of my father's uncle was the Shepherd in charge of the C & S and one of my aunt Iya Bola was Mother-in-Israel in the C & S church, the cooking for the two churches will be done in out compound though in different months towards the end of the year. Plenty to eat and drink.
The Egungun festival is the most interesting part of the year. We will follow Egungun from Ebute-Meta to Bariga and follow them back late in the evening. Before the Egungun leave their abode, the will make roasted yam outside their compound and everyone will eat including the Muslims and Christians in the area.
One day, I was in the Mosque praying, I heard the drums of Egungun drummer boys, I quickly rushed my prayers, jumped out of the Mosque and followed the Egungun crew that included up to 2,000 people. We all got to Bariga where the Egunguns entered their other cult room for some minutes and when the came out, we continued our singing, dancing and running back to Ebute-Metta.
When we got to around Moore road, it was some minutes after 6PM, so I, Emmanuel, Adiku, Thomas, Tudefa, Mustapha and few others stopped at the St Dominic's Church for evening Mass, so we couldn't follow the Egungun to Ebute-Metta in that participated day.
Muslims Ileya festivals (ram festivals) are another very interesting periods. When my family slaughters one cow and some rams. My Christian relations are the people that will help prepare the cow and ram for distribution to friends and for eating. One of my uncles who is a hiphop Muslim will buy beers and alcoholic wines for us to enjoy the meat. Several weeks after the ileya festivals, my grandfather will still be quarrelling with him for bringing alcohol into the festival because some friends and relatives will get drunk and sleep everywhere in the compound till the next day.
My youth years were very interesting in term of religions. For you religious fanatics, you don't know what you are missing but, Thunder will still Fire ya father. Gbam! End of discussion. I too, usually visit our traditional festivals in Ondo here esp Ogun festival Again, thunder fire religious fanatics. |

tatatar: It's simply due to high levels exposure to people from other faiths. In certain areas of Yorubaland that are most homogeneous, like some places in ondo state, they could be as bigoted as their igbo counterparts. Oga, we're not bigoted in Ondo state. In my secondary school. 3 people represents us in Bible quiz. 2 Christians and 1 Muslim. So stop saying that, I went to Catholic school, we have many Muslims reading Bible, going to church etc. |
