The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, has expressed the commitment of the Corporation to science education. Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru The NNPC GMD who stated this during the grand finale of the Corporation’s 2017 National Quiz Competition Tuesday in Abuja, said the Corporation’s stand was informed by the critical role of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education in the quest for nation building. “To ensure that best standards are maintained when it comes to the quality and integrity of the quiz competition, NNPC has also gone into partnership with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), as well as the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN),” Dr. Baru stated. At the end of the annual contest which began on Monday 13, November, Delta State carried the day with 75 points after breaking a tie with Abia State which came second with 70 points. Ondo State came third scoring 65 points. Dr. Baru disclosed that beginning from this year’s series, the Corporation would commence offering a one-off educational grant of N100, 000 each to all State winners of the competition, adding that a scholarship award of N300, 000 would be granted the overall winner per session, while the second and third place winners would receive a scholarship award ofN250, 000 and N200, 000 respectively per session for the duration of their tertiary education. “I am very happy to see that three of the contestants are female, contrary to the notion that science education is primarily for males. These three females battled with their counterparts and came out victorious. Despite this feat by the female contestants, I want to throw up a challenge to teachers and parents alike across the country: The girl child should be encouraged to excel in core science, technology and engineering subjects,” Dr. Baru enjoined. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, represented by the House Committee Chairman on Downstream, Hon. Joseph Akinlaja, applauded the NNPC for sustaining the programme in the past 17 years and for grooming the leaders of tomorrow through the Quiz Competition. He stated that the House of Representatives stood with the contestants and the NNPC for the event which he described as epoch making event. “Education makes the people to be easily governed, but makes it difficult to enslave them. I urge the students to remain focused and wish them all the best in the contest,” Hon. Dogara submitted. In his goodwill message, the Governor of Sokoto State, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, commended the management of the NNPC for sustaining the quiz competition in the last 17 years, noting that the Corporation has not only ensured the survival of the competition but has made it a pan-Nigerian contest. “It is really a national event and has the characteristic of a football match in Nigeria whereby all sections of the country are represented. For instance Master Sunday Enokela that represented Sokoto State is not an indigene of the State but we are very proud of him and we came all the way to support him. So, I commend the initiative of the NNPC and I am very satisfied with the outcome and organization of the competition,” Gov. Tambuwal observed. Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, who also spoke at the event, congratulated NNPC for its support to the education of the youths in the country. Mr. Obaseki stated that he was proud of the representative of his State, Master Hassan David, of Word of Faith Secondary School, Benin. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, congratulated the participants for excelling in their academics by emerging champions of their various states and zones and urged the Governors to continue to serve as fatherly figure to them by encouraging the contestants in their educational pursuit. Dr. Kachikwu stated that the essence of the event in the lives of the contestants might not be apparent now, disclosing that in future, it would add up to their curriculum vitae Speaking in similar vein, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, represented by the Director, Research and Planning of the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Chioma Nwadei, applauded the NNPC for promoting STEM education, stressing that the competition promised to put the country in a good stead among the comity of nations. Other dignitaries who spoke at the event including the Head of WAEC, Nigeria, Mr. Olu Adenipekun and Registrar of National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Charles Uwakwe, commended and identified with the NNPC for promoting excellence amongst the youths, stressing that they are the leaders of tomorrow and that the investment in their education was in the right direction. Mr. Adenipekun advised other corporate bodies to invest in the education of the youth in the country. On his part, pioneer winner of the NNPC quiz competition, Mr. Sunday Aliu, applauded the NNPC for giving him the platform to excel in his educational pursuit, adding that the rare opportunity has made him to contribute to the Egina Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) project which is the deepest offshore project in the country. He encouraged the participants to take advantage of the exposure the quiz competition had afforded them, by excelling in their academics, describing himself as a testimony to the success of the Nigerian Content in the Oil and Gas Industry. Mr. Aliu works with Total Upstream Nigeria Limited as Integrated Control and Safety Systems Engineer (ICSS). In his victory speech, the overall winner of this year’s competition, Isioma Nelson Ifeanyichukwu, who is a student of the Federal Government College, Warri, thanked the NNPC for giving back to the society through its annual quiz competition, pledging that he would remain a good ambassador of the competition. The 2017 edition is the sixteenth in the competition’s history. The first edition in 2000 was limited to the Niger Delta. However, in recognition of the strategic importance of the Quiz to NNPC Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) goals, the competition went nationwide in 2001. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/11/science-education-nnpc-partners-waec-delta-state-wins-2017-national-quiz-competition/amp/ lalasticlala, Mynd44, seun fynestboi, olawalebabs, Richiez

The NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru, gave the advice in Abuja at the grand finale of the 2017 annual National Quiz Competition organised by the corporation. According to him, the 16th edition of the competition, which began in 2000 and is part of the corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), will deepen knowledge in science and technology. He said, ‘’I will like to urge us to encourage our female children to pursue careers in the sciences’’. ‘’I have g four girls two out of who are medical doctors’’. Baru gave special commendation for the only three females: Chidubem Igbokine, Onuoha Esther and Aziene Boti out of the 18 contestants that participated in the competition. He said NNPC prized education dearly, hence, the tilt toward Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. The group managing director said the study of science subjects ‘’creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy and exposes new innovators. “This year, the grassroots level of the quiz took place in all 774 local government areas of the country. “We are proud to say that even areas of the North-East affected by the insurgency are not left out of the competition. “We can therefore say these students before us today present the best of the best that Nigerian Secondary Schools have to offer. “No matter who carries the day, you are all winners. It is not easy to be top in your state, that is why I authorised a special prize for all of you,’’ he said. Also speaking, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Yakubu Dogara, who was represented by Rep. Joseph Akinlaja, said “education makes people easy to govern but difficult to enslave. “Be focused, ask questions, share knowledge. Even when people laugh at you, they will be there when you become inventors, governors, presidents,’’ he said. In his address, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu told the participants to leverage on the contacts they made from competition as winners. According to him, the opportunity of the competition will open doors for the participants later in life. ‘’Like it did for me after I represented the country from University of Nigeria Nsukka, the competition played a big role in my gaining entrance into Harvard University. So strive to be the best,’’ Kachikwu said. Newsmen report that 18 contestants began at the grassroots level and moved to the state level, the zonal level produced three states each from the six geo-political regions for the competition at the nationallevel. The overall winner of the competition, Isioma Nelson from Delta, will receive scholarship award of N300, 000 paid per session to any tertiary institution of his choice. The second and third place winners, Benjamin Chinueze from Abia and Adekunle Jesufemi from Ondo State will get scholarship N250,000 and N200,000 respectively per session for any tertiary institution of choice. At the end of the competition, Nelson had 75 points; Chinueze, 70 points and Jesufemi, 65 points. inaugurates new students union exco From Victor Akinkuolie, Ondo | Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, has performed the inauguration of new Students Union Executives (SUE) in the institution. The college also announced that it has emerged the best College of Education in Nigeria for the year 2017. The Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen, made the announcement at the weekend while performing the inauguration ceremony for the 2017\2018 Student Union Executives held at the campus of the institution in Ondo city. According to the Provost, “Just four days ago, we emerged as the best College of Education in Nigeria. That is the third time running that we are recording such feat, the Webometrics ranking of 2015, 2016 and 2017 confirmed us. ” We are not competing with the Colleges of Education, we are competing with the Universities,” he stated. While emphasising the need for students of the College to be proud of the institution, Ogen, a Professor of History, explained that the rain of awards coming the way of the college from both local and international organisations, are testimonies to the fact that the citadel of learning has been recognised as one of the best tertiary institutions, not only in Nigeria, but within the African Continent. Speaking on the just concluded SUE election, the ACE helmsman congratulated the entire students of the College, for the display of maturity before, during and after the conduct of the election and reiterated the resolve of his administration to continue to implement programmes that would put smiles on the faces of both staff and students of the institution. He assured of introduction of new innovations in the delivery of people oriented projects that would boost physical and intellectual aesthetics during the new academic session in the College. Earlier in his address, the Dean, Student Affairs in the institution, Mr. Olakanye Olaluwoye described the occasion as very important adding that the reforms brought into the electoral process by the Provost, through the introduction of electronic voting ( e-voting) has brought sanity and boost confidence of the people in the conduct of students union election in the institution. Olaluwoye commended past leadership of the students body in the College particularly those at the helms of affairs during the 2015\2016 and 2016\ 2017 academic sessions for embracing dialogue instead of confrontation in dealing with the College Management. He observed that the development has brought peace and created awareness in the mind of the students and popularised the statement that students unionism has transcended beyond display of hooliganism in the institution. Harping on the need for the newly inaugurated students union leaders to serve diligently, Olaluwoye equally advised them to shun greed, selfishness or any act capable of tarnishing their image. He reminded students of the College to be good ambassadors by emulating the current Provost of the College, Prof. Olukoya Ogen and his Deputy, Dr. Samuel Akintunde and other important personalities in the society who include the immediate past Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibu Ojerinde and Senator Oluremi Tinubu who were once students of the institution. Also in his address after he was sworn in, the new Student Union President, Zubair Taofeek, thanked students of the College for giving him the mandate to lead them. He gave assurance that his leadership would consolidate the gains from his predecessors and cooperate with the College Management in their resolve at advancing accelerated development in the College. Similarly, the outgoing Students Union President for the 2016/2017 session, Omoseebi Oluwatobilola expressed gratitude to the students populace and the College management for the support given to his administration. Oluwatobilola, however, charged his successor to shun confrontation, but embrace dialogue when dealing with the College Management, saying the step would engender smooth relationship and foster development in the College. The highpoint of the event was the admission of oath of office on the Students Union by the College Acting Registrar, Mrs Olufisayo Fakorede. http://thehopenewspapers.com/2017/11/ace-best-college-of-education/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter Lalasticlala, Mynd44 |
