The $300m BUA Sugar Factory In Kwara Is Nearing Completion

Nigeria spends N300bn importing sugar.

According to reports, this plant will process 14,000 tonnes of canes daily to produce 200,000 tonnes of refined sugar, 35mw of electricity.

Mr AbdulSamad Rabiu, is building a multi-million Dollar sugar refinery and plantation in Lafiagi, Edu local government area of Kwara State.

The project, according to Mr Rabiu, is expected to be completed in 2020 and should generate not less than 10,000 jobs and produce about 14,000 tonnes of canes per day.

Speaking during the tour of the project site on Monday, the businessman said the sugar plantation in Lafiagi and the refinery is one of the most advanced anywhere in the world.

“When completed, it will generate over 10,000 direct employments and produce over 200,000 tonnes of refined sugar together with 200,000 litres of ethanol and 35 megawatts of power – using the bye product of sugarcane,” he said.

The Nigerian LNG Limited has awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contracts for its Train 7 project to the SCD JV Consortium, comprising Saipem of Italy, Japan’s Chiyoda and Daewoo of South Korea.

The NLNG announced the signing of the contracts at a webinar on Wednesday evening.

The company had in September 2019 said that it had issued a Letter of Intent for the EPC contracts to SCD JV Consortium.

The Train 7 project aims to increase the company’s production capacity from 22 metric tonnes per annum to about 30 MTPA, and will form part of the investment of over $10bn, including the upstream scope of the LNG value chain, according to the company.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, said, “With the award of the EPC contracts, the construction phase of Train 7 can now commence in earnest.

“The award of an EPC contract in the industry is welcome news anywhere in the world. Although it might mean more competition for industry operators, it ultimately promises greater availability of cleaner energy necessary for the sustainability of the environment.”

The Managing Director, NLNG, said, “Today marks yet another milestone in Nigeria LNG’s journey in being a global LNG company helping to build a better Nigeria.”

“On December 27, 2019, our shareholders took the Final Investment Decision for the Train 7 Project, in a bid to expand our operations and increase our production and export capacity by 35 per cent from 22 to 30 million tonnes per annum.

“In September last year, the NLNG issued a Letter of Intent to the preferred bidder, SCD JV Consortium, who emerged through a very robust competitive process. That was a strong indication of our readiness for the project execution.”

The NLNG is jointly owned by the Federal Government, represented by the NNPC (49 per cent), and three international oil companies, namely Shell (25.6 per cent), Total (15 per cent) and Eni (10.4 per cent).

The Group Managing Director, NNP

Nigeria’s Foreign Reserves Rise by $1.22bn in Eleven Days

The nation’s foreign reserves rose by $1.22 billion in eleven days, according to the report released by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Despite weak revenue generation and low oil prices due to the global pandemic, the foreign reserves rose to $34.65 billion from $33.42 billion posted in April.

The Nigerian foreign reserves stood at $38 billion in January before plunging with low oil prices to $34.65 billion and subsequently forcing the Central Bank of Nigeria to technically devalued the Nigerian Naira to protect the nation’s foreign reserves.
