Sports / Star Becomes Official Beer Partner Of Chelsea Football Club In Nigeria by samsonslide: 2:37pm On Sep 29, 2017
Chelsea Football Club have announced Star Beer as their official Nigerian beer partner.

The club through their official website announced the partnership with the Nigeria’s leading beer brand and revealed that Star will sell Chelsea-branded bottles throughout Nigeria.

Chris Townsend, Chelsea FC commercial director, said: ‘We are very happy to begin this partnership with Star, a leading brand in a country fanatical about football. We believe this alliance will further help us grow our fanbase throughout Nigeria, while allowing Star to become even more appealing to consumers through their links with the Premier League champions.’

Franco María Maggi, marketing director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, added: ‘The partnership with Chelsea provides us with a remarkable platform to broaden the brand’s profile and its values, while giving us another opening to create distinctive and shining experiences for football fans and Star lager consumers.’
Chelsea already possesses huge popularity in Nigeria, with more than two million Facebook followers in the country and a dedicated network of supporters regularly visiting the club’s official website.

Our on-field links with Nigeria are obvious. Africa Cup of Nations winner Victor Moses is a key member of Antonio Conte ’s squad, and the now departed John Mikel Obi lifted every major club honour during his time at Stamford Bridge.

Younger Super Eagle Kenneth Omeruo, another Cup of Nations winner in 2013, is currently on loan with Kasimpasa in Turkey, while Ola Aina is gaining first-team experience with Hull City and recently earned his first call to the national team. Our first Nigerian, Celestine Babayaro, spent eight years with the Blues after signing for us back in 1997.

Sports / Super Eagles Invitee On Target In Club’s Europa Cup Loss by samsonslide: 11:45am On Sep 29, 2017
One of the Super Eagles invitees for the Nigeria-Zambia World Cup must win cracker was on target in his club’s 3-1 defeat in the Europa League Group Stage on Thursday.

Anthony Nwakaeme came off the bench to put one back for his Isreal-based club Hapoel Beer Sheva as they lost 3-1 away to FC Viktoria Plzeň at Doosan Aréna on Thursday.

The home side who lost their first group stage game 3-0 to Romania’s FCSB were the better team in the opening stages of the encounter and their impressive start was rewarded with a goal from Petrzela in the 29th minutes of the game off Kopic’s assist.

At the end of the interval, it was FC Viktoria Plzeň 1- 0 Hapoel Beer Sheva. Hapoel Beer Sheva who won their first game against Lugano 2-1 came out a different team in the second half and they got their equalizer in the 69th minute through Anthony Nwakaeme.

Anthony Nwakaeme scored his goal 7 minutes after coming in for former Chelsea player Ben Saher, the Nigerian controlled a pass from Elo in front of a defender before powering in from the box.

Unfortunately for the visitors, their joy was cut short 7 minutes after Nwakaeme’s goal as Kopic who provided the hosts’ first goal put his name on the scorers’ chat and Nwakaeme and co were dealt further blow when Bakos scored the third goal three minutes after coming on to seal the win for Viktorka.

John Ogu was on for the entire duration of the match as he also couldn’t stop the hosts from beating Hapoel Beer Sheva in Czech Republic.

Sports / Dalung Urges NASS To Revist Legislation On Tax Rebate For Sports Development by samsonslide: 4:35pm On Sep 28, 2017
The Minister of Youth and Sports Barrister Solomon has called on the National Assembly to revisit the Bill supporting tax waivers for investors in sports development.

Barrister Dalung made the call when the Nigeria Hockey Federation led by its President Senator Abdul Ningi paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

The bill, if passed and assented to will have a tax rebate for any company that supports sports. This is expected to generate funds for sports development while waiving a percentage of taxes paid by sponsors of sports development.

“Elsewhere around the world, financial institutions pick athletes, adopt them and spend their money on the development of those athletes. We must have such traditions in Nigeria.

“Here, multinationals make billions in Nigeria and none of them plough back the interest or the profit of their investments into sports, yet, they put billions supporting sports in other countries.

“That is unacceptable and that is why I will lend my voice to call on the National Assembly to revisit that legislation which was concluded but did not receive the Presidential assent, because it is a desirable legislation for sports development.

“If we have that bill passed and assented to by Mr President, definitely sports development will be rapid and massive.”

Sports / Manuel Neuer: ‘I Have Been Playing With A Metal Plate In My Foot’ by samsonslide: 4:19pm On Sep 28, 2017
Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has revealed that he has played with a metal plate in his right foot for the past nine years.

The 31-year-old had an operation last week after suffering a repeat of a previous hairline fracture of the metatarsal in his left foot during a training session.

Neuer is now expected to miss the remainder of 2017, and has explained that he first sustained a similar injury while playing for Schalke 04.

“I had the same injury while at Schalke in 2008,” Neuer told Bild. “Back then, a metal plate was inserted which is still in.

“I’ve never had a problem and feel comfortable with it. I’m all for leaving everything in during my career in order to avoid unnecessary absences.”
Neuer has made 298 appearances for Bayern since making the switch from the Veltins-Arena in 2011.

Sports / Enugu State To Host Secondary And Tertiary Institution Games by samsonslide: 7:49pm On Sep 27, 2017
The Enugu State Government have confirmed it will organise the Secondary and Tertiary Institutions Games to harness talents in various sports.

The state’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Joseph Udedi, disclosed this to news men.

“The essence of the Games is for the state to harness hidden talents, especially at the grassroots level, in preparation for events such as the National Sports Festival (NSF), the National Youth Games (NYG), among others,’’ he said.

The commissioner expressed regrets that the state contingents have performed abysmally at the just-concluded NYG and other sports events.
He said the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, was highly interested in reviving sports in the state.

“The era of government giving only football attention in the state is gone. Under my watch, I will ensure diversification of sports in the state,’’ Udedi said.

In a remark, leader of the delegation and Enugu state secretary of SWAN, Mr. Ignatius Okpara, had assured the Commissioner of the association’s support and cooperation via objective reportage at all times.

He urged the Commissioner to always see members of the association as key stakeholders in the business of sports development in the state.

Sports / Liverpool Midfielder Emre Can Fit To Feature Against Leicester City by samsonslide: 2:40pm On Sep 22, 2017
Liverpool have been handed an injury boost ahead of their Premier League meeting with Leicester City this weekend as midfielder Emre Can has recovered from injury.

The 23-year-old picked up a knock in the disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Burnley last weekend, ruling him out of the midweek EFL Cup tie against the Foxes.

Can is expected to be part of the Reds’ squad for their latest trip to the King Power Stadium, however, having returned to training at Melwood on Thursday.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Klopp may be without defenders Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip in the East Midlands, giving the German a defensive headache of sorts.

Matip is to be assessed by the club’s medical department on Friday afternoon, but should he miss out then Joe Gomez will likely partner Ragnar Klavan in the heart of the defence.

Sports / Not Preventing Neymar´s Barca Departure A ´bad Decision´ – Rakitic by samsonslide: 12:50pm On Sep 22, 2017
Ivan Rakitic is still ruing the “bad decision” Barcelona made in not preventing Neymar’s world-record €222million move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Neymar’s switch from Barca to PSG rocked the football world at the start of August, as he became the most expensive player in history.

Speculation had been rife for much of the pre-season of a possible move, though Barca were confident that Neymar was set to agree a new contract at Camp Nou.

But Barca was rendered somewhat helpless when PSG paid Neymar’s buyout clause and Rakitic is still frustrated by the outcome.

He told the BBC World Service: “For me personally, it was really hard, not only because he’s one of the biggest players. But also, for me, because he’s a big person.

“He was really important for our dressing room, and for me, he’s one of the best guys I know in football.

“So for me it was really a bad decision because I liked to have him in my team.”

Rakitic holds no ill-feeling towards the Brazilian, however, and wished him success in France.

The Croatian called for Barca to show unity following the departure of a key player.

“We have to respect Neymar’s decision to move,” Rakitic added.

“If a team can buy him and he decides to leave Barcelona, we have to respect it and wish him the best luck.

“Hopefully he can score a lot of goals and be happy in Paris, but we have to go on our way and be strong together without Neymar now.”

Sports / Mauricio Pochettino: ‘mousa Dembele Playing Time Must Be Managed’ by samsonslide: 12:24pm On Sep 22, 2017
Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that it is “important to manage” Mousa Dembeleproperly as he recovers from a foot problem.

The 30-year-old appeared to put his injury issues behind him when undergoing surgery at the end of last season to ease the long-standing damage.

Pochettino has named Dembele as a substitute in his last two league games against Everton and Swansea City, however, keeping the Belgian on the bench last time out against the Swans.

After using the midfielder in midweek games against Borussia Dortmund and Barnsley, Pochettino hinted that he may again overlook one of his “geniuses” for Saturday’s showdown with West Ham United.

“It is so important to manage him properly,” he told reporters. “We have very good communication with the doctor, physio, sports science and coaching staff to try to help him because to help him is to help the team.

“He is a player who I have told you many times is, for me, one of the geniuses that I have met in football. It is key to keep him fit and try to provide all the quality that he has to the team. He shares the decisions. That relationship is important in order to help him.

“It’s a private matter, a medical matter, and it’s so difficult to speak about – first of all, because I don’t have the vocabulary in English to explain everything properly and then, to make a mistake, is so easy. It’s better to be cautious about what I say [about his recovery].”

Dembele, who joined Spurs from Fulham for an undisclosed fee in 2012, started only one his side’s final five matches last season.

Sports / Paris Saint-germain ‘leapfrog Manchester City In Race For Alexis Sanchez’ by samsonslide: 12:16pm On Sep 22, 2017
Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez next summer after agreeing to better Manchester City‘s wage offer.

The Chile international is almost certain to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of the campaign as a free agent, having turned down the club’s offer of a new contract.

Sanchez was close to joining the Citizens on deadline day in a £60m transfer, only for Arsenal to pull the plug late on after missing out on replacement attacker Thomas Lemar of AS Monaco.

City are widely considered to still be in the running to sign the 28-year-old in the New Year, either in January or next summer, but The Sun suggests that PSG are the current favourites to land the in-demand forward.

Sanchez is said to have demanded £400,000 a week to join the Parisians, which they were unwilling to offer, but they are prepared to better the £275,000 sum offered by Man City.

The same report suggests that PSG will offload Edinson Cavani to make room for Sanchez following the Uruguayan striker’s on-field disagreement with world-record purchase Neymar last week.

Sports / Jose Mourinho: ‘I Will Take EFL Cup Clash With Burton Albion Seriously’ by samsonslide: 10:22am On Sep 20, 2017
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has pledged to take his side’s EFL Cup match against Burton Albion seriously.

The Portuguese coach has revealed that only four first-team players will be rested ahead of Wednesday’s third-round tie with the Championship outfit – David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Nemanja Matic and Eric Bailly.

Pressed on whether he is taking the game seriously, Mourinho told the official Red Devils site: “Oh yes, serious because it’s football you know, it’s football, it’s competition, we take it seriously. Of course, I’m not playing De Gea or Bailly but if we go to the next round probably these guys play and I give rest to others.

“Our squad is good but we don’t have 30 players. We have what we have and a couple of injuries so we need some of the players that played [against Everton] to play and we need some to be on the bench because we need a strong team.

“I know the quality of the Championship and I know if we don’t take the game seriously we are going to lose.”

Mourinho is the joint-record holder in the EFL Cup’s history, on four trophies alongside Sir Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough, father of Burton manager Nigel Clough.

Sports / Klopp: Liverpool Are Still A Good Football Team by samsonslide: 10:13am On Sep 20, 2017
Jurgen Klopp still believes Liverpool are a “good football team” despite seeing their winless run continue with a loss to Leicester City.

Liverpool’s defensive frailties were again exposed as they suffered a 2-0 loss to exit the EFL Cup in the third round on Tuesday.

It extended their winless run to four matches, a period during which Klopp’s men have conceded 10 goals.

The German retains belief in his team despite their dip in form, taking plenty out of a strong first half.

“It doesn’t feel too cool but it’s the truth that we are still a good football team,” Klopp told a news conference.

“I see it but unfortunately it doesn’t feel it at the moment because it’s a cup competition.

“We want to go to the next round. Nobody was interested in who plays the better first half. Everybody was interested in who would go through and we are not the team who’s in the next round – and for some good reasons.”

Liverpool are experiencing similar problems just nine games into their campaign, having kept just two clean sheets.

Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani scored second-half goals for Leicester – the first after Liverpool had cleared a corner and the second from a throw-in.

Klopp said: “Defending is different things. It’s common together defending and it’s individual defending, it’s one-on-one situations, it’s two-on-one situations.

“I don’t think teams shoot a lot against us, I know they don’t, they have not a lot of finishing situations.

“We defend really well in a lot of moments – how everyone can imagine, we know how to defend a set-piece, a throw-in, and then you change two or three times and then in the end, obviously it doesn’t work.

“I’m in the boat, it’s not that I say ‘I told you and you don’t know’. I feel really bad in the moment about this, of course it’s not about not knowing it’s about doing it in that moment – that’s hard in the moment, it feels really hard in this moment to go out because of this [and] after that performance in the first half.

“But we have to play like this, we made seven or eight chances and we still can play football, that’s cool, good, good, good, but as long as you concede goals like this it makes life really difficult.”

Sports / Neymar Unfollows Cavani On Instagram by samsonslide: 10:54am On Sep 19, 2017
PSG transfer record holder Neymar has reportedly unfollowed his n teammate, Edison Cavanni on social media following a slight argument over set-piece duties during the 2-0 win against Lyon on Sunday.

After PSG won a free-kick, Dani Alves kept the ball from Edinson Cavani until the Brazilian appeared from nowhere to take the set-piece. But it was unfortunate Neymar could not get his effort on target as his row with team-mate Cavani escalated.

The South American duo are both keen to be on set-piece duties and clashed again later over a penalty. Cavani won this time but fluffed his lines before PSG responded to beat Lyon 2-0.

The duo also debated who was on spot-kick duties against St Etienne and the argument appears to be growing more heated with each passing game.

The feud has led to Neymar unfollowing his teammate on Instagram which has caused Twitter to react!

Sports / Pinnick Calls Out Ifeanyiubah Over Rohr’s Salary Claims by samsonslide: 4:24pm On Sep 18, 2017
NFF president Amaju Pinnick has maintained that Ifeanyi Ubah has never paid the salaries of the Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr while challenging the oil mogol to give a breakdown of his financial assistance to the football house.
Reports making the round suggest that Ifeanyi Ubah paid Gernot Rohr before the NFF finally secured a corporate sponsor back in April to foot the salaries of the coach.
Ifeanyi Ubah, who is the chairman of Anambra FA and the owner of NPFL outfit FC Ifeanyiubah, also claimed to have assisted the NFF financially during the visit of FIFA president Gianni Infantino to Nigeria.
However, Pinnick, through his media adviser Callistus Ebare, denied the claims of the oil mogul asking him to provide evidences of his claims.
“My principal wants to make it very clear that at no time did Ifeanyi Ubah pay the salary of Gernot Rohr,” Ebare said on behalf of the NFF president.
“Also, as regards any assistance for the visit of Infantino, it will be important for anyone to give specific breakdown of this assistance.”

Sports / Etor Daniel Opens Goal Account In Oman In Al-nasr Away Win Over Al-mudhaib by samsonslide: 9:35am On Sep 18, 2017
Etor Daniel put up a man of the man performance as his club Al-Nasr defeated Al-Mudhaibi at the Al-Seeb Stadium in their Oman Professional League game two on Sunday.

The former Enyimba striker who recently joined the Omani side was involved in everything good his team did as they ran away with an away win on Sunday.

Etor Daniel scored his club’s first of the night and his first ever goal for his new club from the spot before setting up Younis who put the game beyond the hosts by making it 2-0.

Etor Daniel after the match told sportlineng.com in chat that he was very pleased with his contribution and hopes to do more in the future before highlighting the differences between the Omani and Nigerian League.

“I am excited and pleased with my efforts today, I am grateful to God who made this happened, but I hope to do more next time,” he said.

“The Omani League is just like Nigerian League, the pitch and officiating are the major differences. They run alot here, they play at a fast pace and I am enjoying it.

“The fans here respect you and the efforts you put in, even when u lose they don’t boo you rather they will keep supporting you until the end of the game unlike in Nigeria where you get booed when things aren’t working well for you.”

Etor Daniel scored his goal in the 18th minute before setting up Younis for his 53rd-minute goal.

Al-Nasr have won their last two games and Etor Daniel has scored a goal and assisted 2 of the 4 goals they have scored so far in the league.

Sports / Chelsea V Arsenal: Wenger Against Conte And The Other Heavyweights by samsonslide: 1:43pm On Sep 15, 2017
Arsene Wenger’s record against fellow managerial big-hitters has come in for sustained criticism over recent seasons but he has enjoyed the better of meetings with Antonio Conte since the ex-Italy boss arrived at Chelsea.

Conte implemented the tactical tweaks that saw the Blues romp to the Premier League title on the back of a chastening 3-0 loss at Emirates Stadium last season.

Chelsea won the return game convincingly but were beaten by Arsenal in the FA Cup final and lost August’s Community Shield to the Gunners on penalties.

It leaves Wenger with a creditable won two, drawn one, lost one return against one of the newer breed of coaches who supposedly leave him as a man out of time.

But, with Arsenal’s record against their fellow title aspirants under the microscope following the 4-0 hammering at Liverpool, how does Wenger measure up to the other men who would be king?

Pep Guardiola P11 W3 D3 L5

Arsenal had the misfortune of facing Guardiola’s formidable Barcelona and Bayern Munich sides over consecutive seasons in the Champions League, where success was both fleeting and emphatically answered. A 2-1 win at Emirates Stadium was answered by a 3-1 loss at Camp Nou in the last 16 in 2011, Barca having dismissed the Gunners in the quarter-finals a year earlier.

Bayern lost a group game 2-0 in north London in 2015 but Arsenal suffered a 5-1 rebuttal in Bavaria.

Since Guardiola’s move to Manchester City last season, the rivalry has evened out. Wenger only took a point off the Catalan in the Premier League but Arsenal came from behind to beat City 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-finals.

Jurgen Klopp P10 W3 D2 L5

Winning three out of six Champions League encounters with Klopp’s formidable Borussia Dortmund stands alongside anything Wenger has accomplished in Europe’s premier competition in recent years, although BVB topped the group in 2013 and 2014 to set up the Gunners’ customary last-16 exit.

In the Premier League, Klopp is on a run of three consecutive wins after last month’s Anfield annihilation. Liverpool have scored 14 goals across four matches against Wenger’s Arsenal under their enigmatic German boss.

Jose Mourinho P17 W2 D7 L8

Wenger’s nemesis and bete noire all rolled into one. Mourinho boasts a formidable record against the Frenchman and often revels in lauding it over an opponent he generally views with thinly veiled contempt.

Across two spells at Chelsea, Mourinho never tasted Premier League defeat to Arsenal, with Wenger’s 2015 Community Shield victory his first over the Portuguese at the 14th time of asking. As Manchester United rested players with an eye on the Europa League crown they would eventually claim, he finally scalped Mourinho in the top flight in May this year.

“Arsenal fans are happy and I’m happy for them. It’s the first time I leave and they’re happy,” an ever-mischievous Mourinho remarked afterwards. “I leave Highbury they were crying. I leave the Emirates, they were crying, walking the streets with heads low.”

Mauricio Pochettino P9 W2 D5 L2

Arsenal’s dominance of Tottenham is a hallmark of Wenger’s near 21 years at the helm, or at least it was until Pochettino arrived at White Hart Lane.

Wenger’s sole Premier League triumph over the Argentinian came when the latter was in charge of Southampton in 2013 and Arsenal have drawn three and lost one since Mathieu Flamini’s brace sealed a 2-1 EFL Cup win at Spurs in September 2015.

Alex Ferguson P49 W15 D12 L22

Despite departing the stage four years ago, it is the Ferguson rivalry that is set to define Wenger’s time at Arsenal rather than any of his scrapes with those younger men.

During its early years it was a thrilling, gripping drama. Marc Overmars’ winner at Old Trafford in 1998 set Arsenal on course to snatch the title from Manchester United and was the second in a run of four straight wins.

Ferguson’s United responded with three consecutive Premier League crowns, their 2000-01 campaign featuring a 6-1 demolition of the Gunners at Old Trafford. Yet, Wenger’s men returned to the same ground in May 2002 to claim a title-clinching win when Sylvain Wiltord scored the only goal. Seven months on and with no little sense of inevitability, it was United who halted Arsenal’s unbeaten top-flight run at 49 matches.

The rivalry became far more one-sided towards the end of Ferguson’s record-breaking tenure. Arsenal won only two of the final 15 meetings between these era-defining managers, a wretched run that featured a comprehensive Champions League semi-final loss in 2009 and a humiliating 8-2 shellacking in 2011.

Sports / Jose Mourinho ‘furious With Paul Pogba’ by samsonslide: 11:44am On Sep 15, 2017
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho reportedly holds Paul Pogba partly responsible for the hamstring injury that could see the Frenchman miss the next six weeks of the season.

Pogba was handed the United armband for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Basel, but the £89m midfielder lasted just 19 minutes of the European tie after picking up a hamstring problem.

The Red Devils are yet to put a timeframe on the injury, although it is thought that the France international will miss the next six weeks of the 2017-18 campaign.

According to The Sun, Mourinho and his staff blame Pogba for ignoring advice over his long-standing hamstring problems, which saw the 24-year-old miss three games last season.

The report claims that Pogba has been using a personal trainer in a bid to cure the troublesome issue, rather than following club advice when it comes to treatment.
United will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they host an out-of-form Everton on Sunday afternoon.

Sports / Mayweather Defends Trump´s ´locker Room Talk´ by samsonslide: 10:54am On Sep 15, 2017
Boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr leapt to the defence of Donald Trump over vulgar and inappropriate comments made by the United States president.

Trump made headlines during his presidential campaign in 2016 when a vulgar recording of him from 2005 emerged.

In the recording, Trump could be heard describing how he hit on women, and he said one tactic he used was to “grab them by the p****”.

Mayweather – who preserved his perfect record with his 50th win over Conor McGregor last month – defended Trump’s words and said that is how “real” men speak.

“People don’t like the truth. … He speaks like a real man spoke,” Mayweather told Hollywood Unlocked.

“Real men speak like, ‘Man, she had a fat ***. You see her a**? I had to squeeze her a**. I had to grab that fat a**.’ Right? So he talking locker room talk. Locker room talk. ‘I’m the man, you know what I’m saying? You know who I am. Yeah, I grabbed her by the p****. And?'”

Mayweather and Trump seem to have a friendly relationship, with the retired American boxer visiting the latter shortly after he was elected.

Trump has also been ringside at Mayweather’s fights, including his victory over Manny Pacquiao in 2015.

Mayweather also defended Trump being elected president, saying he won fair and square.

“I feel people shy away from realness. This man didn’t do nothing. Listen, if y’all didn’t want the man in the White House, y’all should have voted the other way,” Mayweather said.

“It ain’t like he went and robbed — he done his homework. He did what he had to do and he got there.”

Sports / Real Madrid Set To Sign Rising Star Rodrigo Rodrigues by samsonslide: 3:00pm On Sep 14, 2017
Real Madrid are expected to complete the signing of 17-year-old Rodrigo Rodrigues from Novorizontino, the club’s president has confirmed.

The youngster is said to have travelled to Valdebebas to undergo a medical on Thursday and will sign a six-year deal with the Spanish and European champions.

The attacking player is set to join the Castilla B team in 2018.

“Rodrigo is in Madrid having a medical and, if there is nothing untoward, he’ll sign with the club for six seasons,” Genilson da Rocha Santos told AS.

“Rodrigo is a complete forward, who can play out wide or in the middle. He’s very quick, explosive and he’s developed a lot since he started here at Novorizontino at the age of 14.

“We’re proud to see him shine in a European tournament and to see a club like Real Madrid become interested in him.”

Madrid’s interest was reportedly sparked when scouts watched Rodrigo in an Under-17 Club World Cup tournament in the city.

If the deal is finalised, he will join compatriot Vinicius Junior in moving to the Santiago Bernabeu next year after he turns 18, which is the minimum age required for an international transfer of this kind.

Sports / Signings Won´t Solve Liverpool Defensive Woes, Says Klopp by samsonslide: 1:01pm On Sep 14, 2017
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp refused to blame the defensive problems that cost his side a win over Sevilla on a failure to sign a top-class defender.

The Reds were the dominant side in their opening Champions League group game at Anfield on Tuesday but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw, as errors and a missed penalty from Roberto Firmino proved costly.

A missed Dejan Lovren clearance allowed Wissam Ben Yedder to put Sevilla ahead and Joaquin Correa pounced on more uncertain defending to equalise in the second half after Firmino and Mohamed Salah had given the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Virgil van Dijk during the transfer window but they were forced to drop their interest after Southampton accused them of making an illegal approach for the centre-back.

Klopp has also seen his side concede a last-minute equaliser against Watford and ship five goals at Manchester City in the Premier League this season, but he insists the signing of one player would not make a profound difference.

“I know you are always looking for this thing – the defence was always something being talked about. ‘We didn’t sign this or that’,” he told a news conference.

“If these problems could be solved by one player, you can imagine we would have put all our money into it and say: ‘Let’s do this’.

“It is about being dominant and losing a bit of a grip on the game in all the defensive moments. There is space for improvement. We need to learn to be dominant and not give easy goals.

“It is not a general defending problem but we have to improve 100 per cent.”

Liverpool return to domestic action at home to Burnley on Saturday.

The Cherries have kicked off their 2017-18 campaign with four-successive defeats, conceding eight goals – including three against Arsenal last time out – and scoring just one.

Ahead of Friday night’s home tie with newly-promoted side Brighton & Hove Albion, Howe believes that one positive result is all that is required for his side to finally kickstart their campaign.

“We’ve gone back to basics and worked on getting the fundamentals of our game back,” he told reporters. “There’s been plenty of other moments that have been equally difficult. It’s never been a straight line of success.

“I’d never question the attitude of my players. I’d question the performances, but never the attitude. We’ve come back before and we’ll do it again. We haven’t changed how we work, just made it better. I think one result can turn things around very quickly.
“From watching Brighton play, they’ve got a good team, a good balance and they’re going to be tough to beat. There are definitely parallels with the two clubs,” he said. “When you see the job that Chris has done, it’s very impressive.”

Bournemouth are aiming to avoid becoming the fourth club to start a Premier League season with five defeats from five.

Sports / Sadio Mane “surprised” By Red Card Punishment In Manchester City Defeat by samsonslide: 10:43am On Sep 14, 2017
Sadio Mane has confessed that he was left “surprised” by the red card shown to him for a high foot on Ederson during Liverpool‘s heavy defeat to Manchester City.

The big talking point of the weekend in the Premier League arrived at the Etihad Stadium, where the Senegal international was dismissed after catching Ederson in the face with his boot 37 minutes into the match.

Liverpool had hoped to reduce the length of Mane’s suspension from three games to one, but the Football Association upheld the original decision and he will now miss the meeting with Burnley, as well as a league and EFL Cup double-header against Leicester City.

Asked whether he felt referee Jon Moss made the correct call, the 25-year-old told reporters: “Honestly, I was focusing more on the goalkeeper than the card and when I saw the red card I was surprised because I was expecting a yellow card.

“But I’ll accept it and try to forget it. I was going for the ball and I didn’t have the intention to hurt him because I’m not that kind of player. I wish him a quick recovery. It’s not easy for me because I love to play football and I enjoy helping my team to win games.”
Mane featured in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday night, while Ederson also played a full part as City cruised to a 4-0 win over Feyenoord.

Sports / Ronaldo: Champions League Is Real Madrid´s Competition by samsonslide: 10:19am On Sep 14, 2017
Cristiano Ronaldo said the “Champions League is Real Madrid’s competition” after the holders made a winning start to their title defence.

Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo scored twice as two-time defending champions Madrid eased past Cypriot visitors APOEL 3-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Still serving a five-match domestic ban for pushing a referee in the Supercopa de Espana, Ronaldo returned to the fold with a trademark brace as he took his record Champions League tally to 107 goals.

Ronaldo and Madrid have their sights firmly set on a third successive European crown.

“There’s still a long way to go; let’s go game by game. First we have the group stage then we can see,” Ronaldo said via UEFA.com.

“We, of course, want to win this tournament. The Champions League is Real Madrid’s competition and we want to win it.

Ronaldo’s return was welcomed after back-to-back draws against Valencia and Levante in LaLiga.

The 32-year-old put Madrid ahead in the 12th minute before doubling his tally with a penalty six minutes into the second half.

Madrid captain Sergio Ramos completed the scoring when he converted an exquisite bicycle kick just past the hour-mark in the Spanish capital.

“I’m delighted to be back playing,” Ronaldo said. “This is a distinct competition and to start playing again and scoring goals is very important for me. I helped the side and feel good about that.

“It was a game we needed to win; we played at home and wanted to start the Champions League well. I think the side were good; we know we were taking on a defensive outfit. We could’ve scored more but in the end, it was a good result and we’ve started off well and we’re happy with that.”

Sports / Coutinho Questions Remain As Klopp Turns To Karius For Liverpool V Sevilla by samsonslide: 9:12am On Sep 13, 2017
Jurgen Klopp kept fans guessing over Philippe Coutinho’s prospects of Champions League involvement for Liverpool against Sevilla but confirmed Loris Karius will get the nod in goal.

Coutinho was left out of Liverpool’s squad for Saturday’s 5-0 Premier League thrashing at Manchester City, agreeing with manager Klopp that he needed to do work to build his fitness after his absence over the opening weeks of the season.

Back injuries and illness were cited as the reasons for the Brazil international’s absence against the backdrop of a transfer request and a succession of bids from Barcelona that Liverpool rebuffed.

Klopp told a pre-match news conference the playmaker is fit to feature at Anfield on Wednesday but refused to venture any further.

“I could give you an idea at this stage,” he said. “But I’m sure Liverpool supporters around the world are ready to wait another 24 hours.

“He is fit, he is healthy. All the information about the line-up you will have to wait until tomorrow. But he is here.”

Information Klopp was more willing to disclose concerned the goalkeeping position, where Karius will step in for regular first-choice in the Premier League Simon Mignolet.
“What I can say is, if nothing happens overnight, Loris Karius will play – that’s true,” he said, before adding Mohamed Salah will be assessed after being excused from training on Tuesday due to illness.

“He was in and the doctor told me Mo Salah can train, but what would be best for him is if he doesn’t have to,” he explained.

“He has a little bit of a sore throat. It shouldn’t be that serious [but] he can’t spread the virus if there is one.

“At this moment we expect him back in the morning for normal training.”
