Politics / Alleged N5bn Bribe: INEC Boss Says His Life Is In Danger by Saorchy(m): 12:33am On May 25, 2015 |
Governor Godswill Akpabio is known to be generous. He is said to be very free with money. And, consequently, money never constitutes a stumbling block whenever he sets to achieve something. This has won him accolades with regard to many of his achievements in his state. But could he have parted with N5billion just to ensure his preferred candidate won the last governorship election in Akwa-Ibom State? Check out this scene in Uyo, the state capital last week: It was an unusual and tensions-soaked meeting at the Akwa-Ibom State secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, along Udo Udoma Avenue, Uyo last Thursday and the agenda of the meeting was ‘Threat To Life’. The Akwa-Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner-REC, Barrister Austin Okojie had summoned the staff including security operatives and Youth Corps members attached to the commission to inform them of how he had been rattled by repeated anonymous telephone calls all of which, he said, conveyed death sentenceson him by a one of the security staff. The said staff was demanding his share of the Five Billion Naira(N5BN) the REC allegedly received from Governor Godswill Akpabio on behalf of the staff of the commission. The INEC boss was being told to be fair to others and let them have a piece of the cake or face horrendous consequences. As human, Okojie, the state INEC boss, said he was engulfed with fear such that he lost hiscomposure even though he did not know the character behind the treacherousintermittent midnight callsand even when he was speechless each time the calls came; the person aggravated his fears by sending text messages. At thispoint, the REC told the staff at the meeting that he finally decided to call the Department of State Service (DSS) both in Akwa-Ibom and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)to complain of the danger to his life and also the lives of his family members with whom he had been subjected to trauma through those midnight calls and text messages. He said that he was advised by the DSS to forward the text messages for forensic tests. He said: “I don’t know whether this person knows exactly what N5Billion looks like in volume! I will collapse if I see that kind of money. Besides, I don’t think I can finish that kind of money in my life time. If I should be in possession of N5BN, I wouldn’t be sitting here today, I would have travelled out of this country with my family and settled there to enjoy the money. “But it is pathetic the way people speculate and spread false information in this state. I was barely five days in this state when some sponsored local newspapers published on their front pages that Governor Akpabio received me into the state with N5 billion and 2,000 bags of rice. “I want you to know that I have not received any gratification or the so called N5billion directly or indirectly on your behalf from anybody. I am also not indebted to any of you because all your allowances, claims and entitlements have been paid up to date”. He lamented that following the threats which were often issued at nights, he was no longer feeling safe and comfortable in the state and may be tempted to travel home to report his experience to his people in Edo State. “Indeed, I am worried and utterly disturbed by those threats because I have never seen or met the person threatening me even though he claims to be a staff of this commission. “I am now living in total fear of the unknown, discomfort and danger to my life and members of my family because I can no longer move about freely as any other loyal and law-abiding citizen of this country. I now live in utter fear of the unknown. “I am so worried that my life and those of members of my family could be made this miserable by someone I am not even indebted to and never discussed with or negotiated any business with officially and unofficially as all the allowances and claims due every staff had since been paid”, Okojie lamented. He therefore used the platform to solicit the cooperation of the security agenciesin the state to investigate the character behind the threats to his life for possible prosecution as according to him, if such perfidious characters were allowed to walk the streets of the state free, many innocent lives would be rendered uncomfortable and endangered. Some of the text messagesread: “Oga Okojie, it is a fool like you that says in your hearts and being, there is no God, because you are corrupt and have done abominable worksn in you doeth no good (Psalm 14:1). U must reward all the staff of the INEC, AKS based on the moneysent to them bythe state Governor. You want to embezzle it for the sake of buy’n your cocaine. I am going to open your dirty can to all the anti-graft agencies. “Bet me, soon you will go in for it. For the Holy Bible says whatever a man soweth that is what he shall reap. You sow to corruption and greed, your reward is death. Idiot, slowpoke, ino, barawo, ikong ekpo. God will punish you 100 times including all ur households and the incoming and the unborn generations, except you share that money to all the staff”. When asked to react to the agenda of the meeting, none of the INEC staff numbering over 300 including security operatives and Youth Corps members attached to the commission, could immediately comment on the issue and it appeared that they were worried by the ugly development and were in sympathy with the REC for the psychological trauma he was subjected to by the threats to hislife and members of his family. However, two members of the staff summoned the courage to speak. One said: “Honourable Commissioner, we are very sorry for what you have passed through due to those threats. The name of the staff mentioned isof the security department of this commission where I am the head. We have never discussed any such issue collectively as staff of the security department and we did not mandate him to do anythingon our behalf. But as our father, we plead that you forgive him because we know that the purpose of this meeting is to enable us reason together. “If the punishment you intend to mete out to him is too heavy, it is the innocent members of his family or his dependants who will suffer. Please, let his punishment be light for him to be able to bear. Continue to be a father to him believing that he would turn a new leaf”, the staff pleaded. The same plea was made by the same speaker even as he berated the said staff for misconduct. Coincidentally, the alleged perfidious messages and calls threatening the life of the REC and members of his family, were tracked by the Departmentof State Service (DSS) in conjunction with the Mobile Phone Providers and the name of the staff was identified. He is a security staff with the commission. Even when he had allegedly destroyed the SIM card after executing his malicious project, the text messages were said to have been used to identifythe source, location and the image of the person. Following this revelation, the DSS was said to have swung into action and got the suspect apprehended. Director-General (D-G), Department of State Service, Akwa-Ibom State, Mr. TomaMinti said the suspect, Asuquo David has confessed to his deeds and has been handed over to the police accordingly. But the Akwa-Ibom State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mrs. Cordelia Nwawe did not respond to phone calls for comment on the issue. As we countdown to May 29, 2015, when the Goodluck Jonathan administration will vacate the seat of power, it is not all gloomy as there are outstanding men and women in the administration that used the instruments of their office to better the life of the common man on the street. Naij.com has compiled 5 of these outstanding individuals that Nigerians won’t forget in a hurry. Read below: 1. Professor Chinedu Nebo: The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka has indeed been outstanding. The Minister of Power have overseen a tedious privatisation process of the power sector devoid of rancour as was the case in the past. He has also been consistent with his regular briefing of the media and Nigerians in order to keep everyone up-to-date on the progress in the sector. Though not much have been achieved yet, Nigerians will no doubt start to see the manifestation of his handiwork in the nearest future, provided the incoming Buhari administration continues from where he stopped and make corrections where he made mistakes. 2. Dr. Omobola Johnson: It is not really a surprise that she has performed well. Not your typical politician, Johnson left her position as the Country Manager of Accenture to take assume the role of Nigeria’s Minister of Communications. Her sterling performance and revolutionary policies are visible for all to see. She has also focused heavily on empowering young girls in Information Communication Technology and it has paid off immensely. 3. Ambassador Aminu Wali: The Kano-born former Nigerian Ambassador to China has brought to bear his diplomatic experience at the foreign ministry. A perfect gentleman, his robust foreign policies have seen Nigeria, for the first time, stand up to ungrateful countries like South-Africa, United Arab Emirates and some Asian countries. Wali has done a good job in standing for the rights of Nigerians abroad although much still needs to be done in this direction. But he has started on a right note, and it is expected that whoever fills his big shoes in the Buhari administration, will continue from where he stopped. 4. Osita Chidoka: Chidoka’s short stint in the Ministry of Aviation has proven that saying that says “It is not how far, but how well”. The former head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) hit the ground running immediately he assumed office. In an industry that has been under consistent crisis, Chidoka became a rallying point for all the stakeholders in the industry mostly because of the professional way he handled issues pertaining the industry. He has worked tirelessly to improve on the safety standards of the industry and has carried on working despite Jonathan’s loss at the polls. Nigeria definitely need men like Chidoka in public service. 5. Dr. Akinwunmi Adeshina: This list would not be complete without the name of Dr. Adeshina. It is not for nothing that he is currently one of the leading contenders for the role of the president of Africa Development Bank (ADB). Adeshina’s revolutionary achievements in the agricultural sector has opened up opportunities in the sector that was hitherto comatose and begging for attention. From the availability of fertilizers to the ordinary farmers, to the loans available to them and the investment flowing into the sector, Akinwunmi is no doubt the most outstanding Minister under Jonathan and he should be proud of himself. One can only wish him luck in his aspiration to lead the ADB. Source: http://www.naij.com/443519-5-jonathans-ministers-that-performed-well.html 4 Likes 1 Share |

As the curtains draw to a close on the outgoing Goodluck Jonathan government, some analysts will focus on the ministers that have not been outstanding and whose non-performance affected the president’s ratings. Naij.com brings you a list of 5 ministers, whose contributions to the present administration have not been any where encouraging. Read below: 1. Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: As the coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister of Finance, the buck obviously stops on the table of this well-learned World Bank trained economist. But has she delivered? The answer is a big NO! Okonjo-Iweala’s first stint as a Minister under the Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration was a blessing to Nigeria. But her second stint under Jonathan has been nothing but disastrous. Apparently bugged down by the hawks around her, Okojo-Iweala’s thesis couldn’t stand the test of a strict scrutiny which calls into question her credentials as a financial expert. 2. Mrs. Dieziani Alison-Madueke: The former Executive Director of Shell actually started on a bright note in the petroleum ministry. Just like Okonjo-Iweala, there is every possibility that Alison-Madueke was at some point overwhelmed by the powerful cabal in the industry. An unalloyed ally of the President, She stepped on big toes when she assumed office, but later fell for the traps the same people she stepped on set for her. She became arrogant, and carried on as if she was untouchable. She lost focus after too many accusations and counter-accusations with the opposition and got distracted too many times. The alleged missing $20billion is one issue that will continue to hang over her neck. 3. Senator Bala Mohammed: Majority of the residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will be glad to see Senator Mohammed leave the helm of affairs of Nigeria’s capital next week. Since he assumed office, frequent complaints by the residents have been the order of the day. Many believe Senator Mohammed do not deserve the position because of his background as a typical politician. Given that proven technocrats like Kaduna State governor-elect, Nasir El-Rufai has been in the position in the past, it is widely believed among the locals that the Minister’s appointment was a draw back to the FCT. One thing is clear, he has not performed. The hurried last minute projects are a testament to the fact that he is just in a hurry to prove a point to a diversified residents that has already dismissed his dismal performance long ago. 4. General Aliyu Gusau: The absentee Minister. His appointment is no doubt a grave mistake my Jonathan. Whether it is his age, or he has run out of ideas or simply not interested, one cannot tell. But he has proven overtime to be incompetent, not reliable and a waste of space. His appointment by Jonathan was politically expedient as the President was looking for every means to gain the support of the north as the elections approached. Perhaps, he knows the circumstances in which he was appointed and felt he didn’t owe Nigeria an obligation to serve diligently. Having being in the corridors of power for over two decades, it is quite surprising that what could be his last outing in governance was a complete disaster. 5. Comrade Abba Moro: How he remained a minister after the immigration debacle remains a mystery. Moro is one man who prefers to dance to the tune of his political masters than to serve his nation without fear or favour. Even when he erred, he refused to apologise but he had every excuse in the world to exonerate himself from a case that was clearly his fault. The Benue-born minister presided over a failed exercise that till this day remains a dent on the image of the Jonathan’s administration. Many Nigerians will no doubt be happy to see the back of this man. Source: http://www.naij.com/443617-5-gej-ministers-that-didnt-live-up-to-expectations.html 7 Likes 2 Shares |

Politics / Consider Merit Not Political Patronage In Ministerial Appointments, NANS Warns by Saorchy(m): 12:55pm On May 13, 2015 |
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday urged President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to base his ministerial appointments on merit. This is contained in a statement issued by NANS and made available to newsmen in Abuja. The statement implored that national interest should be placed ahead of party sentiments and considerations. It said that Buhari should go for technocratswith track records who could collectively bring Nigeria out of its present predicament. “NANS has observed with reservations the intense jostling and lobbying for ministerial and other appointments and deemed it wise to offer a word of advice to the President-elect. “In as much aswe recognise that the President-electcame onboard on the platform of a political party, politics should not be allowed to take pre-eminence over national interest. “NANS, therefore, urge the President-elect to ensure that the ministerial appointments are based on merit—persons with proven record of probity, technocrats, and persons with sound leadership skills are what we look forward to,’’ the statement said. It stated that Buhari could only succeed in turning Nigeria around if his team was well-selected and well-meaning. The statement said that Nigerian students were expectant that the President-elect would deliver on his campaign promises. Politics / Fayose Tackles Pdp’s CWC, Says He Only Got N30m For Polls by Saorchy(m): 8:44am On May 06, 2015 |
ADOEKITI—Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday accused the Alhaji Adamu Muazu-led National Working Committee, NWC of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP , of selling the party to the opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, in the March 28 and April 11 general elections. President Goodluck Jonathan lost to General Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential election. The governor also challenged the NWC to provide evidence of money released to him to prosecute the last elections. “Only N30 million was received for the last two electionsand to the glory of the Almighty God and support of Ekiti people, we won all elections outright,’’ Fayose boasted. Although he demanded for the mode with which money was released to him by the NWC, authoritative sources said he got N2 billion ecological fund meant to prosecute the elections. About the CWC’s lacklustre performance, the governor said; “How do we explain the PDP losing so scandalously in Bauchi State, despite the presence of the National Chairman, Federal Capital Territory Minister and the state governor? “I am even more particular about the National Chairman because he sold the party to the opposition. I have cogent evidences of his unholy alliance with the opposition before the elections and if they go any further, I will expose all his underhand deals.” Fayose insisted that his call for the dissolution of the Adamu Mu’azu-led National Working Committee (NWC) was in good faith, and in the overall interest of the party. “I have no apology on my position on the NWC because their responsibility as party leaders does not take awaytheir failure in the last general elections,” Fayose said. Fayose insisted on the dissolution of the NWC. He said: “In saner climes, when a war commander leads his troop to an embarrassing defeat, such commander does not need anyone to tell him that he needsto leave the war front for another commander to take over.” While describing the attack on hisperson by the NWC as unfortunate, the governor said it was sad that the NWC members, especially the National Chairman were refusing to allow new people to manage the party after managing it into its first national electoral failure. “I want to say it again that I have no apology for calling for the resignation of the NWC members, especially the National Chairman. After all, someone resigned hisposition as the National Chairman for Mu’azu to assume office. “Lastly, letme say it categorically that they can only attempt to destroy thisparty for the moment, not for ever. Sooner or later, they will all fade awayand PDP will rise again,” the governor said. Fayose, in astatement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, reiterated his commitment to the PDP, pointing out that if it remained only him in the party, he would continue to defend its cause. “If it remains only me, I will continue to defend the cause of this party because some people are born to stand up at difficult times, and I believe I am one of such people born to stand up for the PDP at this difficult time,” he said. No excuse to owe Ekiti workers— APC Meantime, the All ProgressivesCongress, APC, in Ekiti State has said Governor Fayose has no reason for non-payment of workers’ salaries, noting that all excusesfor the delay are stunts of an insincere administration outto fleece Ekiti money for personal benefit. Publicity Secretary of the APC, Taiwo Olatubosun, said yesterday, that what Ekiti workers were experiencing in non-payment of salaries was a systematic defraudingof the state. He asked workers to reflect on their experiences while Dr Kayode Fayemi was the governor and ask themselves how the former governor was able to pay them regularly while at the same time servicing debt and implementing capital projects but Fayose could not do either of the two, even when he is not servicing any debt since the lastsix months. Wondering why the governor could not pay salaries, Olatubosun said: “Governor Fayose has not paid one kobo of Ekiti debt since he assumed office. He sought moratorium of six months within which there would be no deduction in Ekiti federal allocation. That means Fayose saves N500 million that Fayemi waspaying in debt when he was the governor, therefore, the weather-beaten tale that Fayemi left a huge debt behind is boring and unconvincing. “The Federal Government had refunded N22 billion that Fayemi spent on federal projects. Another N2 billion Ecological Fund had been paid. ‘’Fayose denied payment of Ecological Fund until we obtained FOI Law to expose his lie. He quickly owned up and two weeks later he announced that he had awarded contracts on ecological disasters acrossthe state where the whole N2 billion was spent. “We are askingEkiti people to point to any ecological project in their communities to prove the governor right.” Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/05/fayose-tackles-pdps-cwc-says-he-only-got-n30m-for-polls/ Cc: Lalasticlala

A chieftain of the PeoplesDemocratic Party and senator-elect for Ogun East Senatorial District, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, has dragged the Chairman, National Drug Laws Enforcement Agency and 11 others to courtover an alleged plot to extradite him to the United States of America to face trial on alleged drug-related offences. Crime / Eze Ndigbo Of Australia, Maximus Sentenced To Jail Over Running Drug Cartel by Saorchy(m): 7:00pm On May 05, 2015 |
To some, including Australian politicians and business leaders, Maximus Osuamadi from Imo state was a wealthy Nigerian tribal chief who boasted royal ties. They never knew he was a drug baron -till he was arrested years back during an undercover operation in Sydney (Australian city). The well respected Nigerian businessman who is also the Eze Ndigbo of Australia, has been jailed by Sydney court for being the brain behind some high profile crimes and running a drug cartel syndicate, which operates between Nigeria, China, Brazil and other Asian countries, according to The Telegraph UK. According to the site, In Parramatta District court on Friday, Osuamadi was sentenced to six years jail for supplying a commercial quantity of methamphetamine during an undercover operation in Auburn Botanical Gardens and in a series of secretly-taped conversations. When arrested at his Granville home, he remained indignant. He said he was of royal blood with ties to some of NSW’s leading politicians, the local police and even the commissioner, he told police. Maximus owned a string of businesses including an African grocery store, hair salon, a limousine company, Internet cafe and a Western Union money transfer franchise but said many of them had collapsed. However, police said it was all a front for his drug business, which helped pay for his lavish lifestyle. Chief Maximus’s trial was held in closed court because evidence by undercover police and their methods in cracking the syndicate were heard in camera .
