Computers / Re: Spectranet Demanding For Extra 21,000 If I Must Use Thier Internet Services! by Saruman: 8:40pm On Nov 20, 2013
[b]The situation with Spectranet has been made worse by the fact that none of their pre-existing customers has the gut to report their discrepancies to the relevant government and regulatory agencies.
It is so pathetic that we allow all these carpetbagger IT service providers do as they like and the customer has no say or right in the service being provided to them. I understand from a colleague that they have removed the "unlimited" data volume package that was on the pre-existing users account with the supposed switch to LTE. It seems to me these guys are just acting as they like without any regulatory framework to guide their interactions with their clients. So, they can couch an of subterfuge with service upgrade and rip people off.
I wonder why did not make the switch optional like "Swift" and why they had to lie to their customers that the switch is just a modem exchange and not new data control.
Unfortunately, one can't expect any better treatment from folks that have run down government providers like NITEL. Little wonder Multilinks too has no relevance any longer in the market.
Methinks these folks deserve a class action to regulate their devious customer delivery acts.

Travel / Re: Important Warning: Need To Know Before You Apply For Visa At US Consulate, Lagos by Saruman: 7:07pm On Feb 18, 2011
@Gbenge77
This advisory is for student visa (F1) applicants and not B2, so I am not at liberty to comment on the interview logistics.
I don't think interview dates will be unavailable until 2012. The US Consulate is making new changes to the appointment scheduling system (rightly so too, its about time).
Guy, hoarding takes place oh and its between the dubious VFS proxies and maybe some VFS cum Consulate staffs with duplicity.
Its an outsourcing headache and the customers are at the receiving end.
I am aware that students are expected to send emails to the US Consulate to request for emergency appointment in case of appointment slot availability but lately, the Consulate has been singing discordant tunes by replying students: "dates are full".
Unfortunately, in Nigeria, it does not pay to follow due process because the smart alecs and corrupt dudes are made to look wise while the orderly and righteous are made to look foolish. So, I know many students that got this reply and went through the back door to secure appointments for the next day with full options. They are in the US now.
Best of luck in your appointment hunt.
TGIF!!!

@anfanio:
1. This is an advisory and not a MUST-DO.
2. The statement reads that the visa applicant should avoid the "Indian" CO and not all COs. If you want to go try him out, best of LUCK. Like I stated, this is an advisory.
3. Its the student that needs the visa, not me. So, good luck with the risk-taking.
Adios!

Figure it out for yourself (does that sound like a novel by Hardly Chase?).
Of course. Tell the consular that you will rather be interviewed by another person because you are not comfortable by the way s/he has been handling applicants applying for the same class of visa you are seeking to obtain. Question his/her objectivity. Don't let the CAT get your TONGUE. Its either you take the risk or avoid the risk grin
Please, don't spoil my Val party jare! cool
Travel / Important Warning: Need To Know Before You Apply For Visa At US Consulate, Lagos by Saruman: 7:32pm On Feb 14, 2011
I am in the mood for Valentine today and want to share some tips warnings for intending student visa applicants at the US Consulate in Lagos.
Don't quote me, don't argue on my thread and if you want, believe me or rather comment before you read and ignore the important issues here.
To see a true reflection of any organization, check out the HEAD. The Head of visa section at the US Consulate in Lagos is an interesting dude and don't be suprised that the way some of the junior consular and foreign service officers handle student visa applications is a reflection of his ideology.
1. The CO was not a US -born American. He went to the US on student visa as well. He is from the Carribeans (don't ask me which country pls). You will think this will give him and his minions objectivity in handling student visa applications? Hell no, he was once quoted during a post 9/11 commission of enquiry as saying that student visa applicants are of special interests to him and hence he tries as much to take part in their interview. In Lagos, you are at the mercy of the low-cadre Foreign Service staffs.
2. He is "purportedly" being careful about the level of influence and the visa process simply because Nigeria is reported to have Al-Qaida presence and he was the Consular Head at the US Consulate in Jeddah between 1998 to 2000. This was the period that the visas for the 9/11 perpetrators were issued. You get the drift.
3. They hoard visa appointment dates at the Consulate (don't ask me, ask VFS). They promised on their homepage that they will expedite your appointment, don't believe it. Apply early. Simple.
4. Avoid the JERK. There is this "Indian" Consular Officer that reminds me of trigger-happy mobile policemen here. This dude kinda gets off on visa refusals, PLEASE, if you are first time student visa applicant, AVOID HIM. If you are re-applying, AVOID HIM. If you are renewing, AVOID HIM. This is simply because he is not realistic, he won't listen to you, won't allow you to answer his questions, won't give you a second chance and won't apply the section 101(a)15(f) of the INA to your visa adjudication. You have been WARNED oh.
5. If the consular says NO, don't just sulk or scurry away like a scared rat, because they expect you to do so. In fact, the present Head I refered to earlier was once quoted as saying; TCNs (Third Country Nationals - which unfortunately Nigeria will be classified, no thanks to the morons ruling us) are easy to dispose of. Nigerians won't ask questions, won't face up to the Consular and ask him if he truly has done a good job of the interview or s/he is just in a mood for refusal. Speak up for yourself students, if these guys interviewing you have been denied the visa when they wanted to go to US too, they won't be there now on the other side of the screen.
6. Lastly, in the spirit of Valentine. DO NOT INFLUENCE. In Nigeria, we believe anything can happen and that every Consular can be influenced but the man at the helm of the affairs right now bristles to that assumption. He once bragged that he "closed the door of his visa section" to his Ambassador (Fowler in Saudi Arabia) because that one asked that a visa be issued to a servant of a Saudi. If he catches you trying to leverage, he might blacklist you, so keep whoever you know close to your chest and play the card Nigerian way.
7. I forgot. Sorry. Ok, here it is; the source of this warning is CLASSIFIED. Don't ask, Don't tell.
Peace. I am off to the partyyyy.
Politics / Re: Nigeria Recalls Ambassador From Libya Over Gaddafi’s Statement by Saruman: 11:39am On Mar 20, 2010
I say again TOUCHE!
Nigeria was never a nation of like minded collectives and its obvious we will never be.
The unworded question since 1970 is what Ghaddafi has spelt out for us now; when will we go our individual ways and find our common denominators?
We can recall anything we like but not the thousands of Nigerians queuing up at the various embassies to get away from the morass of this nation. Its obvious now that our major export aside crude oil is "Illegal immigrants".
A friend once told me that he looked up the meaning of 'HOME" in the Advanced Learners Dictionary and the definition does not fit Nigeria for him. I was unfortunate to visit a Nigerian Embassy abroad once when I had a problem and the guy kept asking me which part of Nigeria I am from before he could even attend to what was my problem and eventually he did nothing. There and then, it dawned on me that Nigeria will never be a country; its more like a balkanized disaster waiting to happen and if the trends of the present continues. It will happen and there is no denying it.

igbo boy:

^^ you and your love for oyibo system

no we dont need uk system, we need seperation like USSR
grin
I am not advocating for the UK system; I am only suggesting it. The real solution to the "Nigerian Problem" lies with Nigerians and if we find the USSR option to hard to follow, the UK system might be a possible option. Sooner or later, the national entities will define where they really belong and the war has started already and can only get "bitter" with the trend of developments now.Thats my take!
Politics / Re: Nigeria Recalls Ambassador From Libya Over Gaddafi’s Statement by Saruman: 1:57am On Mar 20, 2010
Nigerians and their self-inflicted Self-denialism.
Everybody is shouting Ghaddafi down and has anybody shouted loud enough now to bring Yar'dua out from wherever he is hiding?
There is a silent war going on in Nigeria and by the time it gets loud enough, Ghaddafi might have the last laugh.
The search for a better nation starts from within.
We could as well turn ourselves to the United Kingdom of Nigeria (UKN; Northern Nigeria, Middle Belt, South East and South West) and make an effort at typifying the UK method with Wales, England and Scotland.
The present Federal system SUCKS!

Politics / Re: Fresh Clashes In Central Nigeria Kill 11 -radio by Saruman: 10:57pm On Mar 17, 2010
The killings in Jos is as tribal as a religious fight could be.
We have to understand that religion is also a political tool that classifies tribal and ethnic setups.
The Jos incidents will indicate there is a lot of bad "joss" going for Nigeria at the moment.
Its purely a religio-ethnic fight between the predominant "islamic" fulanis and "Christian" beroms and remembering the write ups of Wole Soyinka in "The Man Died", Nigerians are dying without knowing it yet.

I have said over and over here, the facts will point to the acts soon enough.
Nigeria was never a nation, its a veritable tool of 10 Downing Street. Sooner or later, we will find our common denominators. Its INEVITABLE!

Politics / Concerning The Breakup Of Nigeria! by Saruman: 4:51pm On Mar 14, 2010
Hello the PEOPLE in CHARGE:
Concerning this topic: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-412938.0.html
Let us not deceive ourselves, Nigeria is not a nation; you either believe or not and sooner or later, we will part ways and every ethnicity will find a common denominator.
I think you should let people post their opinions and the truth cannot be far from the fact that Nigeria is living on the EDGE now.
Your site is popular because Nigerians found a place to say their mind without the agents of the state on their tails and if you continue this way, you won't be different from our politicians that have refused to disclose the whereabout of Yar'dua till now.

PS: I have lived all my life in Nigeria, traveled the world and seen it all from the South to the North and I know Nigeria is an entity on her way to the cleaners. The patriots of the USSR were behaving just like you decades ago but I bet you know the facts today. Peace!

Nonetheless and while Nairaland might retain its cyber existence, sooner or later Nigeria will dis-integrates. This is the way of nature and there is no gainsaying the blatant truth.

Delusional post at its height. Giant indeed. I will prefer the label Gnat.
Revmallam with investment in the US and Nigeria, lets take power generation as an example, do you run any of these of Nigerian business/investments on NEPA Leper? Factor in your overhead and let me know when the gnat wakes from its lumbering slumbering.
Computers / Retrieving Emails And Attachments From Winmail On External Hard Disk by Saruman: 7:52pm On Jun 13, 2009
Hello All,
I have 2 laptops running on Win Vista Home Basic and they are used for official business, so I use the Winmail POP3 email client on both. Unfortunately, one of the laptops fell the other day and the screen got spoilt and since I need to work and can't wait to buy another screen immediately, I removed the hard disk and packed it as an external hard drive in order to access my files on it.
I have some emails with important attachments on the external hard drive and will like to know how I can access it using the same Winmail client I use on the other laptop.
Technical suggestions and advice needed. Please, do not post snide comments.
