James says something interesting in the bible - Jm 1:2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations;

You would think that verse would make no sense if you assumed that joy and happiness were, by biblical definition, one and the same. How can a man be "happy" when he falls into temptations?

Here is the way i explain it (pls note . . . this is my own opinion based on what i perceive from the bible) - Joy is a state of being content, satisfied and secure in the knowledge that no matter the trials and temptations . . . God's promises are ALWAYS TRUE.

Happiness is the feeling you get when someone sends you a gift you like. Doesnt last.

ok i see a difference now from ur own perspective. Talking about God being a genie, I understand that is not how he works but he promises those that believe in him to have everlasting joy but sometimes it is hard to see that. How can you explain why most times good things happen to bad people or people that do not care, doing evil and wrong while you trying or @ least struggling to do right, still below them?

I think the first thing is to work on your mentality.

1. God doesnt exist to be your magic genie, giving you "blessings" (always material of course).

2. Do you understand what a blessing really is? Read the bible, it has a lot more than having money, a nice house, good luck e.t.c. Have you realised that your very life is a sign of God's abundant love and mercy?

3. Stop "trying" to be good, you cant! Ask God for strength to do His will and live according to His word (well that entails reading that word eh), surround yourself with wholesome friends who can build you up mentally, emotionally and best of all spiritually.

4. Where is your focus? Material things or on Christ? Perhaps you simply need some time alone with God.

5. Joy and happiness are not the same thing . . . God promises joy not happiness.

As a christian, what do u do when you seem far from God or God seems far from you? Why must you go around seeing people(bad) flourishing with blessings, living their lives doing all sorts while you trying to be good, seem way below them? worst things happen to you rather than them.
I know God works in mysterious ways but sometimes i wish i can understand why and how he does his things.
How do i build up my faith once again when i feel so distant and discouraged?

Why and how?

It is possible to have a very high self esteem but after a bad relationship or break up,why does it go down? No matter how much people tell you, you r still beutiful, the self esteem is still low.

I can now understand why u still have feelings for him, but since u cannot cope with the long distance thing, i'm sorry to say which i'm sure some people would advise u to do is to try and move on. With time I;m sure, everything will come to place when u don't see each other for long. it has happened to me, an ex of mine, so much in love, he travelled to canada, i thought my world was crashing but hey before i knew it, it had already faded, we are even friends.

i meant things I know that are risky, for example smoking, i know its risks and others but now i'm guessing no matter how safe and healthy u think you r, u really are not.

I guess no matter how healthy you think u are, u really are not. I just found out a friend of mine, we r young ladies, just found a tumor in her breast and she has to go for chemotherapy sometimes next week. it really shocked me because i haven't really been going for medical check ups or tests or anything because i feel i haven't put myself in such situations.
i'm just scared what if i go and something. my friend isn't even up to 25 and she's going for chemotherapy next week. she didnt even know.
How often should one really go for check ups especially the females?

i have noticed on this section, u post scary, miserable pictures and posts.  Just curious to know ur reasons if u would respond

I had to . . . i will boldly state that i've been down that road too and the number one problem with breaking the addiction of masturbation is what you feed your mind. Spend too much time watching TV or reading books that are overtly sexual in nature and you can bet all your prayers for that day has just gone to waste.

Engage your mind in spiritual activities, mix with friends of like minds like you and whom you are not afraid to share your deepest problems with . . . there is nothing like having fellow christians you can be accountable to. Most importantly its time to start asking God for a life-partner.

With God all things are possible. Dont kill yourself with worry, others have had even worse trials and temptations too but God's grace is sufficient for you and me.

this is highly encouraging, thanks davidylan. i'll keep fighting till that day comes i'll overcome it and im sure that might be when im married,or even before im married i guess

Masturbation is a very hard addiction to break - praying alone wont solve it, you need to get yourself surrounded by christian friends, get involved in activities so you're not by yourself too often. You wont even notice when the urge disappeared.

Dont condemn yourself with unecessary guilt, even as christians we are still human still working towards perfection. 1 Cor 7:8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. 9 But i[b]f they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn[/b].

This tells me that even during the time of the apostles some christians too burned with passion . . . they didnt solve it by killing themselves with guilt, they simply sought the face of the Lord and married!

I must confess that I am not good, it is only Jesus Christ who was able to fulfil the law of righteousness and keep God's moral law without breaking it that is good and by His grace I am what I am. This you can do by repenting from your sin and putting on Christ like you will put on a parachute. You do not only trust a parachute if you are to jump from a plane but you put it on. Put on Christ as your Saviour and Lord and the Holy Spirit will impute and impart His righteousness into you to go and sin no more.

Addictions are formed by habits and habits by practise. Start by having fellowship with the Lord by reading His word, praying and fellowshipping with people of like precious faith, also by sharing your faith with your friends. Occupy your time by reading, studying the word of God, the devil makes use of idle periods that are not fruitful. Read the posts suggested below in the Nairaland Christian e- fellowship and the meditate on the verses on the thread on Bible memorization and above all pray with all prayer and supplication. Read Ephesians 6:10-18
