Onitsha (Anambra) - The Anambra State Government has expressed readiness to fence its major dumpsite on the Onitsha-Owerri Road.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr Evarest Uba, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Onitsha.

“The fencing will be done with appropriate gates immediately after the abatement of the rains this October.

“With the fencing off, there will be no report of dumping refuse close to the road any longer, while the ugly site the dumpsite registers will cease to be,’’ he said.

“The government, after reviewing all the happening within and around the dumpsite, decided to fence-off the dumpsite as the first of two solutions it has come up with to tackle issues concerning the dumpsite.

“The Solution Two, which will come later, will be coming in of a Ukrainian firm to use the massive dumpsite to generate electricity after sorting out the non-bio-degradable materials.

“We are already discussing with the firm; the discussion, God willing, will materialise after a period of time,’’ he said.

The commissioner said that the solutions were part of the urban renewal strategy meant to reposition Onitsha as a mega-city and commercial hub in West Africa.

Uba urged residents of Onitsha to maintain a clean and healthy environment through proper waste disposal.

“We are appealing to our people to join the government to arrest anybody or group dumping refuse indiscriminately or doing anything inimical to the environment,’’ he said.

You have said it all..

Dereformer:
A man who over threw an elected government should never be seen near the corridors of power through election.

Buhari is an undemocratic man.

An unprecedented human right abuser in Nigerian history.

A murderer ( killed many during his military dictatorship).

A terrorist sympathizer, and

A religious fanatic.

I have always noted that voting Buhari into power is tantamount to voting Shekau and his gang into power..

Buhari can pass for a leader in the stone age not in the 21st century..

Buhari should give it up because he will definitely fail in 2015 if he contest I can stake my house and cars on that.. cool

cjrane:
My point is that you should stop your inferiority complex.

Enugu and Owerri are great Igbo cities, unique in their own ways and we know which is better in each respect.
You have been denounced as an Ikwerre boy by the great Imo people. Why aren't you talking about PH instead of Owerri?
You derive sadistic joy when Igbos are deceived by your antics and begin to pummel each other.

The attempt to compare Igbo cities have usually resulted in disastrous flared emotions and e-wars to derail the thread. You have been part and parcel of that unfortunate event in the past and should not repeat the same useless tricks here again to derail this thread.

Abagwo, I have warned you cancer to desist from mentioning any part of Anambra or its people whenever you talk from your inferiority mindset. At least I pass Owerre twice every month en route PH..and I know the ugly and messy situation there on the ground of which I have pictures to backup, coupled with its dirty red soil. I usually laugh when you come on NL to deceive people who are not on the ground.. cheesy

Your state is sinking and drifting in all facets..stop acting as if you do not know. Face reality for once.. cheesy

Abagworo,
You have started again spamming this thread with pictures from Owerri and insinuating it is a better place than Enugu. When Chino and other people start bad mouthing Oweeri, you will pretend as if you didn't know what you did. We have already seen those pictures in Imo thread, no need spamming Enugu thread with them just to cause trouble and start e-war with someone here.

There’ll be no abandoned projects under my watch-Obiano

BY OUR REPORTER ON OCTOBER 20, 2014

Anambra State governor, Chief Willie Obiano has assured Ndi Anambra that there will be no case of abandoned project under his watch. Governor Obiano made the pledge to contractors and various groups that paid solidarity visit to him at the Governors’ Lodge, Amawbia over the weekend.

Obiano said his administration was committed to steadfast implementation of the 4Cs programme of Continuing, Completing, Commissioning old projects and Commencing of new projects. According to Obiano: “Our projects are well thought-out and initiated to international standards and specifications and all outstanding contractual obligations and issues are being addressed and honoured.”

The governor stressed that his administration would continue to pursue all contractual agreements entered into by his predecessor as long as quality of work was not compromised and enjoined consultants to be alive to their responsibilities to avoid lapses.
He directed all contractors handling government projects in the state to go back to site and accelerate the pace of work as the rain was gradually abating.

Speaking further, Obiano told the contractors to use the coming Dry Season to work aggressively to complete the projects on schedule and according to specifications. He enjoined the contractors to work on how to be involved in the state’s road maintenance programme and confirm approved burrow pits for sand excavation to avoid aggravating the problem of erosion in some parts of the state. He also told them to use the state Building Materials Quality Testing Laboratory to confirm the quality of materials used in executing projects to check incessant collapse of buildings and roads.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Works, Sir Callistus Ilozumba, while explaining the import of the meeting, pointed out that the meeting was to focus on and organise various projects and avail them the opportunities to interact with the governor on various issues concerning the projects.

Speaking on behalf of other contractors, Youssef Zghaib assured that they would work hard and to specification and meet the expectations of the government and the people.

Who told you that Nigeria has a big economy? Whoever told you that Nigerian economy is bigger than SA told you a big lie. Have you checked the HDI of both countries? Selling of crude and making quick cash is not an economy! SA has a real developed economy whereas Nigeria's economy depend on how much oil they sold..which is crap!

People follow the economy because that is where the real development is domiciled..

BuddahMonk:
Nigeria with big economy but majority of our citizens are littered in Smller Southern African and Asian countries with better standard of living.
Your economy is docile since the majority are living for smaller economies because your standard of living is very pooooooooooor, WD, IMF, UN, ADB et al dont talk about economy they champion improvement in the standard of living

Yes the same way America with big economy is better than Britain.. cool

You better forget about Nigeria being larger than SA in terms of economy. In the real sense of it SA is very far and bigger than Nigeria economic wise..you can take that to the bank! cool

Ikengawo:
Then Nigeria is more developed than South Africa, Singapore and the UAE by your logic.
Politics › Re: The Six Geographical Regions In Nigeria in Order Of Development by Schematics:
It does not matter where you prefer afterwards its a personal choice..because at the end of the day you still end up moving to the place with the big economy..

Economy is synonymous with development that is why people tend to move towards big economies to either settle down or look for job or set up industries or real businesses..

BuddahMonk:
Economy is not everything but standard of living, Nigeria have bigger economy than Bostwana, Seychelles, Namibia but their standard of living are higher than that of Nigeria, we consume all we produced because of overpopupaltion, we import virtually everything and export nothing.....i will prefer an Owerri to an Ibadam
Politics › Re: The Six Geographical Regions In Nigeria in Order Of Development by Schematics:
If a place has a bigger economy than the other that means it is more developed, because at the end of the day more people will move to such location for either job placements thereby continue in further development of the place. Proliferation of hotels and brothels all over the place is not and can never be considered as development..

If I am to list the most developed cities or states in Nigeria. It comes thus: Lagos, Abuja, PH, Kano, Onitsha, Ibadan, Warri, Enugu, Aba, Ogun..

Economy is everything because that is what people runs after..

Ikengawo:
All of the ills you listed as plaguing owerri, give me an accurate description of Oshogbo or Ore. Owerri is more developed than ibadan while ibadan has a bigger economy. The part of ibadan where people live in mud houses is almost the size of the whole owerri municipal. Even on these alleged outskirts of owerri you wont find people in slums and shanties nor will you see beggars, leprosy, and teaming colonies of cripples or touts. Whats worst is owerri is not ibadans peer, enugu is. While ibadans economy is bigger than that of enugu, theres more development in enugu than ibadan.

Now go to rural awka ibom where kids are still killed for being accused of being witches, and rural bayelsa, oyo, ekiti, osun, etc and compare it to the worst poverty in rural imo anambra or abia

The action on the environment is already on the top gear. Even the private sectors like SABMILLER are not left out as they are grassing/flowering the shoreline of the River Niger in Onitsha..

Anambra has the longest shoreline on the River Niger..this is a huge resources to our lovely state. It can only get better..

Anambra adigo mma..

3dankey:
This is what I am always taking about, this is the kind of things we need in our environment. In Anambra state you have very good road network almost all round the state(cos we hv suffered from it & successive government focused on it),but those roads have sands at the side and the place is just naked no tress or grasses planted beside it.
We need to ask serious questions to the commissioner of environment and please any1 close to the government should inform them that ANSEPA should sit up and do their job. . huh

Anambra, particularly the major city of Onitsha and its environs is a lot cleaner now. The new ASEPA has a mandate to evacuate wastes every morning. And the occupants are cooperating, because even the last time I went to Awada I noticed that they are given black nylons in which they put and tie the waste and carefully drop it at the front of their premises. This makes the job a lot easier for the waste manager to evacuate every morning.

ChimaAdeoye:
You are right that we should provide waste disposal bins, but I have seen people that simply dump their trash into the gutters right in front of their houses when it rains! In spite of the official refuse dump site being only a few blocks away!

The right attitude is still our major challenge especially in Anambra and Abia states.
Every compound i visited in Anambra state had some sort of flowers and trees planted inside the compound to beautify it and more importantly was regularly swept and kept clean. Many people see public property as nobody's property and therefore it should be abused. So, after sweeping inside of their compounds every morning, they simply open their gates to dump the dirty gathered right in the center of the road outside their house! Even in Onitsha Main market where many get their livelihood, our peoples attitude is to sweep the inside of their shops every morning and dump the trash in the alley or public passage right in front of their shop!!!
Thus, when you speak of planting flowers along roads or public buildings, our people stare at you strangely as if you have lost your mind! Because in their understanding, the roads and schools, malls are not anybody's property,so you must not make any effort whatsoever to keep them clean and decent, to the extent of planting flowers?

I tell you, the biggest challenge to transforming Anambra is all about changing our peoples' attitudes and psyche towards public properties and utilities.

Politics › Re: Anambra light of the nation, eastern economy power house. by Schematics: 9:56am On Oct 18, 2014
Yes I understand your point. Agulu Resort and Onitsha Resort are all 5 star facilities of world class status. The flowering/grassing, landscape and its environs will measure up with what we see in Dubai 5 star facilities when completed..

ChimaAdeoye:
Great pics! thanks for sharing.

Even more important than how the physical structure finally turned out will be the landscaping and flowers planted around this hotel.

The Uyo Meridien Hotel isn't fantastic because of the physical structure alone, but the use of palm trees, flowers and grass to make the environment truly fantastic.

Typically, Anambra is one of the places where the prevailing attitude is that planting flowers & trees around such buildings is considered as unnecessary and definitely not as important as the physical structure itself.

However, one hopes that emphasis on transforming the environment around the Agulu & Onitsha resort hotels is made a priority. Clear the bushes around these hotels and plant palm trees & grasses in its place to make a beautiful garden resembling a golf course around these hotels. Environmental aesthetics through proper landscaping makes all the difference in the world.

THE OPENING ADDRESS PRESENTED BY THE GOVERNOR OF ANAMBRA STATE, CHIEF WILLIE OBIANO AT THE 8TH EDITION OF THE ANAMBRA STATE FESTIVAL AT ROJENNY SPORTS STADIUM, OBA ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2014.

Protocols

It is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to the 8th edition of the Anambra State Sports festival. This is the first Sports Festival under my watch. It is therefore the first step in the bold efforts of my administration to begin a revolution in sports in Anambra State.

Ndi Anambra, as we are gathered here today, we are standing in the shadows of Nigeria’s heroes and legends. This is because, from time immemorial, our beloved state has made a big mark in the field of sports. Most of the people who pioneered sporting excellence in the history of Nigeria are indigenes of Anambra State.

The great Zik of Africa and Owelle of Onitsha, Right Hon Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was a great sports man. He was a good boxer, swimmer, footballer and football administrator in his time. In his time, Zik aspired to represent Nigeria as an individual athlete at the British Empire Games in London as far back as 1939. Though he was denied entry into the games by the colonial political establishment, Zik never allowed that denial to discourage him from becoming a keen sportsman all through his life, bringing the spirit of sportsmanship to bear on his brand of politics to the benefit of the country.

Many other Ndi Anambra have followed Zik’s steps to distinguish themselves in the field of sports. Emmanuel Ifeajuna pioneered sporting excellence for Nigeria in 1954 when he won the Gold Medal in High Jump at the Commonwealth Games. Since then, other Anambra athletes have followed in his footsteps to achieve great records in different sporting activities. We all remember our own Innocent Egbunike, Silver-winning Olympic medalist, Mary Onyali Omagbemi, Rufina Umeh, Obinna Metu, Emmanuel Okala, Sylvanus Okpala, Mikel Obi, Emmanuel Emenike, Ifeoma Nwoye, Amaka Ogoegbunam and many others who have successfully placed Anambra State in the sporting map of the world.

Ndi Anambra, the strategic approach of my administration to sports development in Anambra State focuses on three areas – the discovering and nurturing of talents and the development of sporting infrastructure across the state. The third component is the reward for outstanding achievements and the welfare of coaches. We shall restructure our policies to encourage more sporting competitions that will serve as talent hunts. We shall also remodel existing facilities in the three senatorial zones to meet the dynamics of the times. We shall acknowledge and reward high performing athletes and coaches. When we do our work very well in these three areas, Anambra State shall return to its glorious days as the reference point in sporting excellence in Nigeria.

This Sports Festival offers us a great opportunity to begin the journey of returning Anambra State to reckoning in Nigerian sports. We shall build on the foundation laid by our great sports ambassadors and discover young talents that will win more laurels for our dear state and the country as a whole. I have no doubt that the youngsters that will emerge winners in different categories in this festival will evolve into great athletes that will make Anambra State proud.

Interestingly, this Festival serves the important purpose of discovering and preparing a team of talented youngsters that will represent Anambra State in the National Sports Festival that will take place in Calabar, Cross River State. I am optimistic that with our efforts here, the team that will represent our dear state will restore sporting glory to Anambra State.

I wish to thank the Hon Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Chief Tony Nnachetta and all the coaches who prepared the participating teams and individual athletes for this festival.

As you use this festival to prepare to represent Anambra State in the coming National Sports Festival in Calabar, I urge you to always remember that you are from Anambra State. I urge you to remember the shining light you bear as Ndi Anambra.

On this note, I hereby declare the 8th Edition of the Anambra State Sports Festival open!

God Bless Anambra State

God bless Nigeria

Thank you

Chief Willie Obiano
Governor Anambra State
