If you are really keen on scholarships then USA, Canada and UK should be in that order. Canada requires you to first get in touch with faculty and get a response before applying. Good luck with that. UK, UK, UK. Well, no school will give you any substantial funding to get by there. You can try out the Commonwealth scholarship program but I think the next edition will soon be advertised against Fall of 2018. Look out for it. There are other scholarship bodies in Nigeria that sponsor strictly to UK like NLNG, NITDA, NDDC, SHELL and AGIP. But you would have to find out yourself if your course qualifies you to vie for it. As for USA, although early bird admissions began this month some schools have varying deadlines most of which end in December (for early bird admissions) and in some schools January. On average, applications can still be made up to even March or April but then funding will be harder there - not impossible. For obvious reasons I will recommend the USA. While you are doing your research on the schools you may want to apply to fully cognizant of the areas in your field you'd want to major on, try to contact POIs. Read their works and share your thoughts with them. Ask them if they are recruiting for their next research group. If they respond, they may ask you for standardized test scores which you'd have to take and present but the important thing is they can almost help you secure not just the admission you need but funding as well. It won't be as simplistic as I have presented it here but that should not be a problem considering good things most times come on the path of which many will not take. But if you can focus on the glory ahead, it will be easy to suffer the "cross" and despise the momentary "shame". 7 Likes |

okoope:Your school choices are good. Of the latter 3 I would go for UCF but that is me. TAMU is deeply selective. I won't discourage anyone from applying but atleast they should have it at the back of their minds that getting in is pretty difficult even with a Q-170 score. Purdue at West Lafayette or Indiana? Both are great schools as well but I guess the one at Indiana is much harder to get into. Does not mean it is impossible; depends on ones overall profile which we don't know. There is no guarantee that UCF will be any easier because it is one of the best schools in Florida but juxtaposed with the other 2, I would go for them. Still boils down to you and what you want. Amandrush:Congrats. Quickest fix: answer the shorter passages after the SEs and TCs. For the longer ones, take the questions and try to trace them in the main passage. Look for key words to help you trace the exact part of the passage that has it. Read 1 or 2 lines before the sentence and 1 or 2 after the sentence. Pause for a few seconds and just think. You time won't run as fast as you think. Just think. Come up with the answer in your head without checking the options then go back to the options. *by now your ABCDE should already be on your answer sheet*. Examine A, if it does not say what you came up with -strike it. Do same till you find an option that matches yours. If A, B, C, D don't cut it for you, don't even bother reading E just select it as your answer and move on. If you keep reading the options over and over, I guarantee you would get confused and your time will keep running. Hope this helps. 11 Likes |

zaynabola:Numbers in paragraphs. 1. Start with what you are trying to study and research. Then add what you have already studied and how it coincides or not, with what you want to research on. 2. Talk about where you are coming from. Any projects or life events that are significant to where you are. Your research background, your findings, your short story where you see the degree taking you or the jobs it could help you get. 3. Talk about the future of the research you are trying to do. What it portends for the course. How it distinguishes the school you are applying to and some of the lecturers whose works you are closely monitoring. 4. Talk about yourself again. 2 or 3 character traits that make you a great fit for the school and program. Whatever they are they should be in-line with what the school expects of her graduates. Cooljoppy:The truth is, you can get admission but funding is going to be difficult. Agricultural Economics is a big deal in the US and is getting regnant coverage so it is getting competitive to get in never mind being fully funded. You can contact POIs in B- and C+ schools and leverage your GPA in interacting with them (because of the funding). Write a very strong SOP and get very good LORs while at it. If you can make other aspects of your application very strong you would still stand a chance as the GRE is just one aspect. Or you can retake the GRE and try to score higher. |

TheExclusive:Some fall deadlines are still in April but funding is harder then. Then you have Spring deadline but the admission is between June- Oct/Nov for most schools and it is almost never funded. I still think fall for even Jan admission deadlines is possible. Most people only advice for early bird admissions because of the possibility of funding. 2 Likes |

Yildiz:Publications help PhD apps better sef. But that 167 is very doable as well as the 4.5. Just try to be perfect in your first Q. I have a conjecture on how GRE scales scores though it is not fool-proof but every thing seems predicated on the first section. If you get 20/20 in the first Q and 15-17/20 in the second your scaled score could be between 164-168. Yet someone else with 18/20 and 18/20 in the second would get between 163-167. The first section is usually easy and you would most likely have time to revisit all your questions when done. Please, don't feel like some Maths Savant; make sure you review almost all your questions. You might see silly mistakes that you made especially in the Qty comparison section. As for section 2, just pray. There are usually too many traps and pitfalls. Also pray you get 2 Quant sections and 3 VRs (1 experimental) so you would know what you are vying for. In my first GRE, I played with my last Q as I thought it was my experimental section. I still bite my finger in regret. I got 12/20 in it and 19/20 in the first section and my scaled score was 162. I knew that section I played with had to be the experimental because the diagnostics showed that I failed numbers 17-20 down (I did not attempt them at all  |

zaynabola:The GRE can strengthen your app for Canadian schools. If you get 300/340 better. But I would advise you to aim way higher and even try some US schools. You could get funded and job prospects are better in the US even though Canada is great as well! |

Yildiz:I don't know much about the school but their engineering programs are rated well. Also, you won't have any issues with funding if you are admitted. The acceptance rate online says 25-30% for grad programs but it could be whittled down to something relatable to you if you contacted the grad coordinator for this information. As a rule of thumb, I check the reddit pages of my prospective schools and then I also calculate a rough estimate of the acceptance rate by counting the rejects and accepts for PhD programs on grad cafe. You may want to search 'UCSD or UC San Diego Electrical Engineering' on the grad cafe search box and make sure the search runs for all times. You can even know the profiles of some accepted/rejected students if you click that red diamond icon by the side. 1 Like |

zaynabola:Don't use grubber. Use Princeton, the ETS Guide and Magoosh videos. Learn the Process of Elimination method (POE); i.e writing down alphabets on your answer sheet and striking them one after the other till you arrive at one you are either not sure about, sure or cannot say. If that is the only option left, click it and move on. Develop reading speed. Read bulky paragraphs slowly but once so you would not need to read them again to get the idea being expressed. If you get the gist of what you are reading POE would be easy for you. Try to read the ETS guide, practice drill or PowerPrep II before the test day because no other material replicates the GRE quite like the testmakers themselves. If you study Grubber before you get into the hall, you would feel like you had been training to play Everton but got Barcelona instead. 2 Likes 1 Share |

calculator123:The basic definition of research is to collect, analyze and interpret data. In a way, it is very similar to statistics as statisticians do exactly that. But on a more closer inspection of the term, research entails contributing something entirely new to an extensive body of work; it involves investigating extant data and reaching new conclusions while at it. So how does that relate to you? Well, do you see numbers in people? Do you find yourself using strange numbers to identify certain instances or events? Do you sometimes count rice grains on your plate each time you eat it and take note of how many grains the average person your height and build will need to consume to feel full? It is obvious I am overstating what getting into your field involves but someone who wants to bring something new to the preponderance of data we currently are saddled with has to have such intuition and innovation needed to extract data intelligently. You have to either present us with new devices, methods or creativity to understand the data we have, or you must have a simpler and more helpful way of reaching new conclusions and relaying information. The steps involved in partaking in research in your field is not different from any other; You must hypothesize, investigate, test/experiment/devise methodology, observe, conclude and report or the other way around. Just that, the ability to produce something noteworthy in your field relies more on one's quantitative reasoning and ability to spot patterns rather than their curiosity and expression (even though both are needed). Based on what your nouveau conclusions are, your research work could be adopted and used in pharmaceuticals, government policy-making, financial markets, rocket-making and launching or even in the Tech world. As long as people need data, they would need simpler ways to interpret or extract it and how well you come up with ways to manipulate this data, shows your ability to research. Hope this helps. temmitats:I applied to USC and College Park (both costing $165). I could not do Boulder as they don't accept terminal MS (they want direct PhD). I am now crossed between UDelaware and College Station but my spirit is saying Delaware. I shot the Grad coord an email on Friday and her response on Monday will seal my fate. Their deadline is Nov 1 for Spring. It has not been easy finding my program for M.S thesis-option against spring. What about you? Are you a Chemical engineer? |
