Hi, What do you mean by: "Serviced"? and can you clarify what the "Annual Maintenance" fee covers? Thanks! |
Hi, Here's hoping someone here can give an indication of what it would cost to rent a serviced apartment in Lagos; 1-2 bedrooms. By serviced, I mean a place in an estate/compound that provides at least security, and stable electricity (i.e. standby gen) and water supply, of course for a monthly/annual fee. Place doesn't need to be furnished. Does anyone know real estate companies with websites where I can find this kind of information? or does anyone know what these places cost? Thank you for any help! And hoping it's not too expensive to live "comfortably" in Lag!! ![]() |
Hey Everyone, Wow!!! I cannot believe some of the comments I've read on here. (and to the one that said smth like CNN is the cause of the Niger-Delta's problems, are you kidding me ))I'll start by saying I am very proud to have been one (out of probably very many) to write to CNN a while ago asking for a feature on Oil in the Niger-Delta. And, YES! I'm ecstatic they put it out there. No, a lot of it might not be "new" news, but now it's gone to a wider public. and at least it was clearly mentioned that Shell is the cause for the environmental disaster in the region. That should prod Shell's Commerical department. If you work for a multi-national, you know very well just how much any public bad press shakes up the department. And coming from one of the largest news broadcast station, I wouldn't be surprised if the CCO got a phone call in the middle of the night asking him to turn on his TV. CNN's focus was on the environmental damage (and it did slightly touch upon the Govt's activities) - so I don't think there was any "misrepresentation" in that feature. And like someone else has said, it's sad, really sad that some say they have developed "tough skin", whatever happened to determination, action, and relentless hope?? I'm not from the Niger-Delta area, never even been there! but so what?? Such a large company wouldn't even DARE act that way in most developed nations, so why in Nigeria? because the Government allows it? as long as the Government gets its own share? tsk! tsk! There are many considerations that have to be taken into account to revamp that area, who should take the first step? |
Hey Siena, thanks but no thanks! :p family and friends are in Abuja so that's where I'll be staying. @skillmyman: Thank you so much!!! That's the kind of thing I was looking for. As intensive a lesson as possible, even if I don't get a license afterwards. At least this way I'll only take as few lessons as possible once back here. exactly my point, I can get 15 lessons in Naija for about 200EUR (according to the AA website: http://www.aarescuenigeria.net/driving_school.html) the same amount will barely get me 4 lessons here! again, thanks a zillion! Thanks a lot! you guys are awesome! ![]() |
wow! seriously?? no one with info about Abuja driving schools?? ![]() |
oh, about 3000EUR in Denmark. |
Yes I do live in Europe and will be going to Naija on vacation this winter. |
Thanks! Yes, I do know that there are a minimum no. of hours, that's why I was thinking of something like a "full-time course", if that even exists. Thinking of doing this during my vacation, 2-3weeks. (since I'll be "idle" during the daytime anyways) And yes, I do know I'll have to get another license here, but I figured if I actually already knew how to drive, (having learned a bit at home where it's way cheaper), when I return I will only need as few (super-expensive) classes as possible to be allowed to take the test and then get a license. The classes + exams here is approx. 3000EUR, that really is a lot! Thanks for any suggestions! And anyone with recommendations, if you know about prices also, please let me know. Cheers! S. |
Hey All, I need some info on this. Can anyone recommend a good Driving school in Abuja? Preferably somewhere I can have an intense crash course. e.g. 2 weeks full time? and the exams? And also the procedure for getting a license, how long does this take? And getting an International license? Thanks for any recommendations! It's about time I learned to drive, :p |
And to the person who started this topic, so what ?Just as irrelevant as starting up a topic about Nigerians preferring Pampers to other brands of diapers. uhh, uhuh?? so what!! ![]() and btw, that's a huge generalization u are making there, |

Hey all, So I was just wondering if house music has a place in the Nigerian entertainment scene? Rumour has it that there's a Pacha nightclub in Lagos? Here's a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzcqxAzlR-g Any other House music lovers in here? ![]() |
Interesting topic! I was just about to start a similar thread when I found this one, Please oo, I'm from Kwara state, mo gbo Yoruba, Ina jin Hausa, but well, we grew up speaking English at home, so I'm not even close to fluent in either. But understand them pretty good, and can definitely get around. What I do want to ask is if it's possible that a Nigerian guy: - spent the first 18years of his life in Naija (mostly Lagos) - Went to King's College - lands in the UK, suddenly speaks with the purest British accent, says he doesn't understand ANY Nigerian Language oooo! and is asking me "how do u say 'morning' in yoruba" :p hahahaha! and If I use naija slang when speaking, the guy calls me "Bush Girl" :p please help oo! Is this at all possible?? |
Dear All, Do you happen to know of any clubs where a group of adults (ranging 25 - 50 years old) could take swimming classes? I'm urgently looking for a place for them close to Apapa in Lagos, and close to Onne in PH. Thanks for any suggestions! Regards, S |
Hi All, I'm hoping you can help me with suggestions. My little sister is back in Nigeria now until Sept. 2008 when she'll start Uni in the UK, but until then she needs something to occupy her time, and I was hoping you would have suitable suggestions. She will be studying Civil Engineering, so anything in that field would be great. She's open to opportunities around West Africa or Western Europe. Please do let me know if you know any engaging programs where a Bachelors degree isn't a requirement. Any internships or traineeships you know about? Or any universities (probably only the private ones?) that will let you enroll to take just a few courses of your interest (without taking the JAMB)? So far I've come up with: - French Village Badagry - AutoCAD training (somewhere in Abuja, do you know where this is possible?) - Internship with Julius Berger (if they'll take her without qualifications - even without pay) I can't think of anything else and well, she needs to fill up about 10months, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to your replies. Thank you. Regards, Sea. |
hmm, the 24hours restaurant is a good idea, but a barbing salon? ppl actually wanna cut their hair at 3am?? |
Hey y'all! Here's hoping someone can help me out. So I'm working with Access 2007, and have just finished creating a program for someone (has tables, macros, forms, e.t.c). Now as many people will be using this little program, I created different user accounts at different levels with respective rights. i.e. admins and regular users, with only the former having rights to making changes. My problem now is that I have just realized that these user accounts are only relative to my computer, and once I send the files to someone else, they are able to make all the changes they want without ever being prompted for a password. So if you have experience working with Access, can you tell me how to create accounts that are not only valid on my computer? Thanks! S. |
ok, so I also believe in the phrase "spare the rod, spoil the child", but some parents REALLY overdo it! Of course those babies shouldn't have been hit, they still do not know the difference between right and wrong. but even when slightly older, beating should not be frequent, and should also be the last resort like someone clearly stated. Think about it, if the kid gets spanked for every little tiny mistake he makes (from leaving his bag in the living room instead of in his bedroom, to not doing his homework, e.t.c), the spanking no longer becomes a "big deal", since u haven't reserved this spanking for much larger errors, the kid doesn't learn the difference between little mistakes, and things that are simply unacceptable (e.g. stealing). I mean, if you hit him with an orogun ( ) because he wouldn't let his little sister play with his toys, and u do exactly the same when he steals toys from the shop, how is he supposed to learn the gravity of his errors? And of course, like my old man would do, a nice long extensive lecture analyzing what you have just done and making sure that you understand why what you did is wrong will precede the beating. ![]() But yeah, I'll start with the little punishments, no sweets/candy/desserts until you get your grades back up, and i'll make sure his siblings rub the fact they are allowed all these sweets in his face. C'mon! some Nigerian parents take it too far. So you failed your maths test and they beat you like crazy, and leave you kneeling in the corner (back turned towards the TV) for hours. That's meaningless in my opinion, how about a lesson teacher, summer school, more and more math books, and even during the holidays, no play time, just math, math, and more math!! ![]() |
Hey babyosisi, It's not Mr. but Ms. And yes, if you'd like me to reiterate, the Prophet (PBUH) said, the best of men are those who do not hit their wives. Anyways, I've answered the question posed to the best of my knowledge, so case closed. That said, could some of you please show fellow members respect when speaking (writing) here? I believe I have not been disrespectful to anyone on any thread, so would like to request that we all show some courtesy and respect while addressing each other. I do refuse to believe that there's any non-human being on this forum. Regards, S. |
Should I like to reiterate the symbolism of this act. Something of the nature that we Nigerians "hiss" to show that we are upset or pissed off about something. By hissing, we are trying to show this other person how angry we are at the moment. And yes the "beating" referred to here means to tap lightly. Yes, you may find it hard to understand, but that is what it means, and it has obviously been largely misinterpreted. And those beating their wives and claiming that Islam permits this shall be questioned accordingly on the Day of Judgment. On the link pilgrm.1 posted, someone provided a link to a video of a Taliban beating a woman. That stemmed from their culture, and is no way supported in the Quran, Hadith, or Sharia. Regards, S. |
PTH:Hey, I just used a "handkerchief" as an example, to show you that the object in question should something of that nature (and not a whip or something, ) Read the verse following the one stated above: "Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more strength than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient and guard in the husband's absence what Allah would have them to guard. As to those women on whose part you fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of annoyance); for Allah is most High and Great (above you all). If you fear a breach between them twain, appoint (two) arbiters, one from his family and the other from hers. If they wish for peace, Allah will cause their reconciliation; for Allah has full knowledge and is acquainted with all things." (An-Nisa': 34-35) The bold section means that if one feels that they may get carried away or anything of the sort, they should resort to seeking a 3rd party to intervene. Note that the Prophet (SAW) describes this beating as "dharban ghayra mubarrih" which means "a light tap that leaves no mark". So this a way of symbolizing the degree of the husband's annoyance. (Note that he has taken some other steps before, including refusing to sleep in the same bed with her, which is extreme! (at least in my opinion)). Also note that Islam forbids this light tap to be on the face, another point stressing that this "beating" is only a symbolism. The Prophet(SAW) also gave as example a siwak (=chewing stick) as an object that could be used to tap one's wife in cases of extreme misconduct, after which all other means have failed. Should also like to point out that the Prophet (SAW) himself never tapped any of his wives or any female and always said that the best of men are those who do not hit their wives. In addition, to show you that this tapping is meant to be anything but violent: "How does anyone of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then embrace (sleep with) her?” (Al-Bukhari, English Translation, vol. 8, Hadith 68, pp. 42-43) (Hadith =oral traditions relating to the words and deeds of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ) For more info: click http://www.islamonline.net/servlet/Satellite?pagename=IslamOnline-English-Ask_Scholar/FatwaE/FatwaE&cid=1119503544256.
Can any Muslim explain to me the meaning of the following verse: 004.034 YUSUFALI: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all). Do they oblige or condone in such contexts, the physical "reproach" of disobedient women?
This "beating" should be done with a handkerchief (which shows that it's more of a symbol than "physical pain" .Hope the explanation helps. |
Thanks! I'll do some google-ing! I'm in Germany/Holland, don't remember seeing such at any shops, but will check online. Thanks again! S. |
Hey Galadriel, What exactly is this microdermabrasion kit you talk about? How does this work? And could you please suggest any brands? Thanks! S. |
