Getting to know the soils in your area

As explained in our previous post, it's difficult to make any useful generalizations about the soils of the tropics and subtropics. Soil-forming factors like climate, parent rock, time, topography, vegetation, and management interact in countless patterns. It's not unusual to find two or more soils on one small farm that vary markedly in texture, depth, slope, and other important features.

Different geagraphycal area has different soil profile and fertility. The reason why some crop grow in certain area and will not grow in other area no matter your input. Consult kenfarm on 08038623884 for more detail

Quick tip for our esteem clients:

Preparing suckers Suckers are separated from their mother plant with a spade or machete. The sucker corm must not be damaged or chipped. Consequently the corm should be carefully peeled with a machete. The pseudo stem of the suckers should be cut off a few centimeters above the corm. Peeling of the corm delays the development of nematode infestation, while cutting of the pseudo stem reduces bulkiness and improves early growth of the newly planted sucker.

Ensure you also look out for early symptoms of Fungi infection on your plantain farm as late identification my make it impossible to control for the manifestation.

kenfarm can help you have a pictorial examination of your plantain plantation to identify early symptoms of fungi. We can not give you concise confirmation of whether or not your farm is having manifestation of fungi attack unless we visit your farm take sample and analyse for presence of fungi and type of fungi with remedy.

But picture sent to us may just help us give you useful clues.

Thanks for the information.

Thanks.
Hope to hear from you soon.

When u plant 1000 suckers it means you expecting to harvest 1000bunches if yu did not experience wind falling any stand.

A bunch is #1000 or more. So you expect to make 1M from your one acre.

However, you can not make your 1M in one season as all bunches can not grow fruit same time. So the 1M is a cumulative saving of sells for like 3season.

The good news is if you plant in May 2019, by July 2020 you will be harvesting a cumulative of 200-300 bunches. In July 2021 you will harvest another 200-300 bunches or even more. So in 3season you should make out your 1M.

By July 2021, your one acre will be having up to 2000 stands of suckers so it keep multiplying every season

All these info are not from google. It the experience I have gathered from this Biz over the years

But let me quickly say that whether or not you get the above depends on
1. If you buy your sucker from the right source
2. If you take adequate care of the farm
3. If you analyse the soil to know what level of fertilizer to apply, what type and what method to apply
4. How well you control weed
5. How knowledgeable is your farm keeper
6. If your farm is not in area where the fruit will be stolen even before it get mature enough to command good market price.

I can go on and on but contact kenfarm for more detail after buying our hybrid suckers

Client Query: How do you sell your plantain ensuring to rip you off??

Good Q, but I need to tell you I did not take it to any market. If I did it won't be bought for such a handsome price. However, when my plantation was 7months old, I started doing market survey to find out the best set if buyer. I keep visiting the buyers to review the price they are willing to buy my plantain.

In the course of my market survey, I realised the boli sellers price offer was way too low.....why You may ask........I find out from them that this is the season for roasting maize. So all of them prefare to rost and sell maize and not plantain. Especially because this is the period plantain is way expensive for them to trade....

So I opted to sell my Giant Elephant plantain to whole sellers and consumers who where willing to buy a bunch for 2-3k and a dozen for 25k.

All i did was spend the whole day driving round town, meeting with all plantain wholesellers, collecting their numbers, documenting it and when I harvested I just put a call through to them and sold it to highest bidder.

In all, you need to create your own market for your farm produce.

However, if you want kenfarm to market your produce, we charge an agreed %

Cheers!

As you consider going into plantain farming.,...have you adequately consider the risk factor and ays to put them in check?

Risk factor like:
1. Disease out break like fungi or Nematode attack
2. Wind breaking down the sucker carrying bunches already
3. Theft
4. Weed
5. Poor management or employing unskilled manager
6. Not securing your market before the fruit are ready to go to the market
7. The fertility history of your farm soil

All these and more need to be taken care of before venturing into the Biz. Invest wisely. kenfarm will guide you adequately on how to make this risk factor your stepping stones to bumper harvest. Contact us asap

Ken4agent:
Season greatings to all our esteem and potential customers!!!!!!
May this new awaited planting season be a testimony to all farmers....

Gradually we are attracting the attention of our Government. It is our belief that soonest Agriculture will take up the stage in the Nigeria Economy..

We at kenfarm wish to bring the below info to the notice of our potential fatmers and those hoping to put that idle land of thires to use this farming season.......

Are we aware that soil in the tropical zone when brought under cultivation quickly become deficient in many nutrients due to LEACHING caused by excessive rainfall

Also, we wish to inform you that With intensive cropping, nitrogen is the primary limiting nutrient followed by phosphorus......(more info in our eBook).

Also, are we aware that the most suitable soil for cassava production is a well-drained sandy loam and loamy sand soil base on Research

If this is the case, don't we think it wise to test for your soil fertility before puting that farm land to cultivation of TME419 cassava stem

The soil fertility test will reveal the lacking nutrient in your farm land soil, it will indicate the soil PH, it will tell you soil textural class so as to know the type of soil you have in your farm land.

All of these soil properties and more are what kenfarm will test and also give concise recommendations base on your soil fertility test outcome.

Ignorance is never an reason for failure....do the needful before cultivating that land

Good luck
Cheers!!

From your experience, are there sandy loam soil farmlands available in Southwest Nigeria?

Are there any amendments that can be made on a soil type to achieve the desired type?

It time to cultivate that farm land that is left idle for years.

kenfarm perform preplanting operations in a client farm today in preparation for the planting of our hybrid suckers.

Do you know it best to mix contact herbicide with atrazin powder While the liquid herbicide act on the leaf and surface root and atrzpazin will act on the weed seed.

Also, do you know it not economically wise to apply systemic herbicide now that the rain is falling every day? Why? Check our blog

Do you also know that it is not a good practice to mix systemic herbicide with atrazin? Why check our blog

Seeking for information is the way to achieve bountiful harvest, save cost and save time

Why is it taken my plantation 13months to fruit instead of 9months?

The rate at which your sucker produce fruit depends on the following factors:

1. Whether or not you control weed when the suckers was tender

2. Whether or not you did soil test of the soil to know the level of Macro and Micro nutrient available in the soil to know the Qty of NPK fertilizer to apply and method of application

3. How moist or how well drained is your soil

4. Whether or not you planted your sucker at dry season and fail to wet regularly

5. Whether or not you planted a hybrid so like that of kenfarm

6. If there was poor rain fall just after planting

These and many more factors determines if your plantain will fruit in 9months and if the fruit will be big enough.

Are we aware that essessive application of mineral fertilizer over the years degredade the organic components of your farm soil (detail in our eBook). However we are advocating for Bush following system or vocational application of Animal manure like poultry waste to your farm to replenish the organic component of your soil after cultivating it for a long period of time.

The poultry manure is a good Animal waste to add to your soil as research has shown that it free of disease causing micro organism on like other Animal waste with the tendency of introducing disease causing organism into your farm soil.

Q: Does a soil fertility testing reveal whether or not my farmland is having an inherent disease?

ANS: The answer to the question above is NO!!

A soil fertility testing only reveal the nutrient available in your soil, and so many other parameter needed by the crop to produce good yield.

If you need to know whether or not your farm land soil is having inherent diseases like Nematode or other disease causing fungi, then you need to take a soil sample of your farm soil and the crop or weed on the farm to the lab to culture.

These are two separate test that are done by conventional farmers. They are test that saves you lot of cost and time

So if you have sent your soil sample to kenfarm for soil fertility testing only, then whatever report we have sent to you can not be used to ascertain if your farm soil is free of all disease causing micro organism

Picture below is a sucker infested with fungi

You must recalibrate the lens through which you view the world, actively seeking new knowledge, opinions, and insights to expand your capacity to move.( Major)

kenfarm is encouraging you do it differently this season by
1. Making adequate consultation from expart

2. Do your soil analysis to acerrain your farm soil condition if it has enough of all that the crop need to survive

3. Get a viable seed from reliable source

4. Do a crop budgeting so as not to get stucked financially along the way

5. Do your maker survey on your crop and secure your buyers before venturing....the implication of meeting tour potential buyer before cultivation is that often time they may give you specifications which will form the bases ifyour farm operations

6. Source for cheap but quality workforce

We can go on and on........

Are you aware of the benefits of De-sucker ??

De-sucker your plants is simply the removal of the surviving suckers(follower suckers). Once your plant is mature and has several suckers, remove all but one. This uncommon practice we have have observe improve fruit yield and plant health.

Hence, do the below when necessary:
1. Cut all but one sucker off at ground level and cover the exposed plant with soil. Repeat with a deeper cut if they grow back.

2. The surviving sucker is called the follower and will replace the mother plant after it dies or harvested

3. Exceptionally healthy plants can support two followers.

kenfarm wish to acknowledge our esteem customers who had ordered for our Nematode free suckers. It was great doing Business with you. We hope to render more follow up services to you all in the future.

Note that because we are the source of your suckers, we are at all time ready to give professional advise and guidance that will ensure you harvest bountifully this season.

Note the observation below from kenfarm......info useful to farmers clearing their farmland at the moment!!

In some cases, farmers will usually like to Rake the farm to remove all dead weed cum burnt sticks but we usually advise that the dead weeds and the burnt sticks should be left on the farm land to decay. The more they decay, the more microbial activities increase which inderectly increase the organic matter concentration on the soil. When the soil organic matter increase, reuptake of nutrient increase and Evapotranspiration reduce leading to increase in moisture content of the soil.

Hence, do not clean up the farm land completely with Rake. Inorganic manure enrich the soil over a long period of time.
