Agriculture / Re: A Step-by-step Procedures To Establishing Our Newly Acquired Farm Land. by Ken4agent(m): 9:23pm On Feb 10, 2019
Client Question: How profitable is Plantain farming? And how sustainable is it??

kenfarm Response below:
I used one acre of my farm for experimental farm in January, 2017. I planted 1000suckers on the experimental farm in May 2017.. (check my thread/URL for steps followed to establish the farm)

By May - June 2018, I started harvesting my giant Elephant fruit. From June to November 2018 I was able to get out 300bunches. By December 2018 I made a head count of the total number of plantain stand left on the farm and I counted 1,700 stands
I sold 300 bunches for an average of #1,000 each, how much did I make from June to November?? Do the maths.

Mean while I still have 1,900 stand that will produce fruit from April 2019 to November 2019.
Note: Don’t also forget I started with 1000 suckers, after first cycle I am having 1900 + plantain standing on the one acre experimental farm.

So if you do your home work well, buy the right sucker and consult adequately, your 1 acre plantation can keep producing 300bunches of plantain every May to November for at least 7yrs.
... So do the maths, in 7yrs how much will you have made from your one acre plantation?
300bunches X 7yrs. = 2.1million for one acre (running cost inclusive though)

What of if you have 10acres?

Note: Whether or not your plantain farm will be sustainable depends on whether or not you purchase your sucker from the appropriate source and some other factors you want to know.
This is a business I have been doing for years now and all am saying is practical. kenfarm is not one of those internet farmers. It our work and it soft work for us. The figure above are not abstractions but available in our Experimental farm blue print but because it our company sensitive document it not available online for free but for a cost. The document is meant for those who value information as a driving force to Bizness.

…..Order for our suckers and we would be guiding you.

Cheers!!

your plantain fruit I'd not this big, it will be as a result of the following:
1. You did not plant a hybrid Musa paradisiacal known ad Giant Elephant
2. If you are sure you planted hybrid and stil it coming out small, then You did not control weed at tender age and so the nutrient the sucker needed at tender to translate into big fruit was shared with weed

3. If you control weed and still the fruit are coming out small, then you did not apply fertilizer after 6weeks of planting. The sucker needs much of NPK to produce healthy levels and healthy fruits

4. If you apply fertilizer and still no difference, then you did not do a comprehensive soil test to ascertain the quantity of fertilizer to apply and which method of application is best base on your soil test result. The soil test kenfarm does comes out with a comprehensive report explaining all this. Are you aware that under application of fertilizer and over application of fertilizer causes problems to your crop??

5. If you did all these and no result still then consult kenfarm. We have had a situation where we have to buldoze a whole farmland and start the Re-establishment afresh which is usually after all Intervention had failed us.

Establishing of plantain plantation in the dry season can be done only by an experience plantain farmer because of the sensitive nature of the operations involve.

Useful tips:

1. Just after harvesting the sucker, you must wet the socket intermetently till you eventually plant. Spread out the suckers before wetting or heap them in 200s before wetting to ensure that the water touches all the sucke

2. You must ensure you plant the sucker not more than 96 hours after harvesting the sucker. Also ensure the hole are not less than 30cm and create a pot hole round the sucker after planting. The pot hole hold water during wetting.

3. After planting, wetting of the sucker must follow.Very important. When wetting ensure that the water soakes down into the soil at least 5-7cm deep. This can be confirmed by digging into the soil after wetting to check for the dept of the wetness

4. Where manure is available, plant with manure using subversive application. The manure will increase the organic content of the soil there by ensuring the soil remain averagely moist over the dry season. Also, Namatodes attack is more common during the dry season so when you apply Manure during planting the manure will reduce the tendency for Namotode attack.

5. Wet morning and evening daily for at least 8-12weeks where wetting can is used. Where irrigation is used, wet once daily for 6weeks

6. Ensure you employ staff to man the farm for the wetting

7. Use a 2m by 2m spacing to ensure good ventilation

8. Cultivate viable suckers. A viable sucker is a sucker that was harvested a day ago(fresh sucker), a sucker that is not too thin but big with enough internal water, a sucker that is hybrid and a sucker that is not rotten

9. Visit the farm as often as possible yourself to ensure your workers are wetting appropriately do not base your judgment or decision on what they tell you on phone. It your investment and you need to double check all info sent to you

10. Pray for your farm.

Q: How do I mentain my farm in preparation for the dry season?

ANS: the following tips are essential tip you need to observe if you want your plantation to survive the dry season

1. Ensure that you apply poultry manure especially if the suckers are less than 5months (check for merits of poultry manure on previous post or check www.kenfarm.com.ng)

2. After applying the poultry manure, if rain has subsided at your farm area you need to wet the farm after application for at least 5days for the manure to resolve and sink into the soil

3. Prume or cut off the dry leaves on the plantain stand as seen on the picture below( for reason check our URL)

4. Ensure you make big heaps round the base of your plantain stand as seen on the picture of our farm. The heaps will hold the parent and offspring sucker very firm. It will also ensure more sucker grow around for sell or transplant next season

5. You can also practise mulching to reduce transpiration and to retain moisture over the dry season

6. Apply contact herbicide mixed with Atrazin ......for detail check our eBook OE URL

for best results kenfarm is recommending you apply deep litter poultry manure at half to one third doses and cage manure at one third to one fourth doses of the cattle manure and water the crop immediately.

The poultry manure can be pelletized and packed in 5-25kg capacity bags, as in the case of developed countries, for use in home gardens and nurseries.

Farmers with farms close to poultry farms use poultry manure regularly for their crops, with good returns.

Poultry manure is a more concentrated source of crop nutrients, especially NPK and calcium. Being naturally organic, it does not need composting and can be applied directly to the fields from the farm.

“The fertilizer value of one tonne of dried cage poultry manure is equivalent to 100 kg urea, 150kg super phosphate, 50kg potash, 125kg calcium carbonate, 30 kg sulphur, 12 kg sodium chloride, 10kg magnesium sulphate, 5kg ferrous sulphate, 1kg manganese sulphate, zinc sulphate and other trace minerals each and is available at a cheaper rate than other market available inputs,”

Research has specify that the addiction of manure, compost or other organic material is one nontoxic way to reduce the damage caused by nematodes( consult kenfarm to know why). By improving soil structure and water retention, organic material creates a healthy environment that increases the chances of plant survival even when nematodes are present.
Deep, infrequent watering helps create healthy, nematode-resistant roots. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which produce lush growth and nematode-prone roots.

Growing plants in above-ground containers (Nursery plants) can also reduce damage caused by nematodes. Use only clean potting mix that hasn’t been contaminated by regular garden soil.

Benefits of eating plantain

1. It reduces the number of harmful free radicals

Free radicals are either made when our bodies break down food or are exposed to harmful elements like tobacco smoke and other radiations. They play a huge role in premature aging, diseases, and cancer.
However, findings from numerous studies have shown that vitamin C is an antioxidant that fights free radical damage. And with a serving of plantains providing over 35 percent of the vitamin C needed per day, plantains have been dubbed to be one of the best vitamin C foods around.
Owing to this, it is, therefore, advisable for us to include plantain to our list of favourite diet.

2. It boosts sexual performance
Studies have shown that the nutrients contained in plantain can help improve sexual performance through increased libido. In addition, eating plantain on a regular can also improve male fertility, thicker sperm, and volume.
Health experts have also suggested that unripe plantain (roasted or boiled) with ginger and garlic are wonderful when it comes to matters that concern sexual performance.
3. It is very good for the heart
Recent studies have shown that eating plantain is very good for the heart because plantain has been shown to contain some amount of serotonin. And serotonin, on the other hand, helps to expand the arteries, improve blood flow, and reduces the risks of artery diseases and stroke.
Additionally, being a rich source of potassium, plantain helps to prevent heart attack and hypertension. The fiber contained in it also helps in reducing cholesterol level; thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

4. It strengthens stronger bones
When it comes to strengthening our bones, calcium is the essential needed mineral. And unripe plantain is very rich in calcium.
In addition to bone strengthening, plantain also encourages stronger muscles, nails, and teeth. This is why medical practitioners affirm that eating unripe plantain helps prevent diseases such as osteoporosis which involves the weakening of the bones and causes fractures.

5. It can prevent ulcer
Findings from various conducted studies show that unripe plantain contains phytochemical properties such as leucocyanidin which can prevent an ulcer.

Q: how do I ensure that the soil sample collected for soil analysis is a representative sample of all the soil on the farm.

ANS: we at kenfarm have a scientific method of collecting sample from your farm so that result of the analysis can be used for generalisation of the intire farm area.

We ensure this by dividing the farm into fields if the farm is more than 10hectares. Where it is less than 10hectares we ensure we increase the number of soil sample we collect on the farm.

We also avoid taking soil sample is some area on the farm base on some characteristic features of those area

You are rest assured that any result we send to you is a true picture of how fertile the entire farm soil is. So we assure you that our analysis report can be used for minor decision taking on your farm because it from the desk of a soil scietist cum Plant Nutritionist

Agriculture / Re: Why Soil Analysis On That Farmland?? by Ken4agent(m): 8:18pm On Oct 05, 2018
soil pH does play a role in nutrient availability. Should you be concerned on your farm? Be more aware than concerned. Keep the pH factor in mind when planning nutrient management programs. Also, keep historical records of soil pH in your fields. Soils tend to acidify over time, particularly when large applications of NH 4+ based fertilizers are used or there is a high proportion of legumes in the rotation.

A knowledge of your soil PH is the key to a successful planting season. Soil analysis with us will go a long way in helping you to make the correct decision on: type of fertilizer to apply, Quantity of fertilizer to apply, when to apply the fertilizer and the treatment to give your farm land....contact kenfarm today
Agriculture / Re: Why Soil Analysis On That Farmland?? by Ken4agent(m): 12:53pm On Sep 22, 2018
Q: for how long can the last soil analysis I did on my farm land last?

ANS: ideally the result obtained should be valid for just a season or Maximum 2seasons.

This is because at the end of every season the following factors would have influence the soil fertility:
1. Biological factors
2. Environmental factors
3. Human factors

These above factors are broken into various other factors and together the alter the soil fertility. You will agree with me that farmers are not opportune to put all these factors under control completely. Hence the best thing to do is to check how much negative effect these factors has caused on your farm soil at the end of a season or two before planting.

It is also very important to retirate that doing our type of soil test is very occurate ..,.do not use the result of soil test done with the mobile soil test machine for concise decision making. That would be erroneous.

Do it right and you get it right.

are in Ibadan the south west zone of Nigeria......soil test is simply checking for how fertile your farm soil is. When you know the level of all the nutrient in the soil, your soil class, whether or not the nutrient can be release to the crop for uptatake and many more info about your farm soil, you are following Agronomical best practise. The knowledge of your soil fertility help farmers to:
1. Know type of fertilizer to apply, what Qty, when to apply and what method of application to adopt
2. It helps farmer know what intervention measure to take when your crop is looking distressed
3. It helps the farmer to predict safely expected yield
4. It helps farmers to know whether or not the soil needs amelioration before planting
5. It helps farmers to manage the crop
6. It help farmers to know if the farm soil can be used for mix cropping and which crop can be intercroped.
I can go on and on......

kenfarm must quickly say not all soil test is standardized to help you know all the above. Do not patronise cheap and substandard soil fertility testing expert .....kenfarm pride herself in the expertise put into our clients soil fertility test. For more detail, contact us via:
kenfarm2020@gmail.com or call the phone line on our signature asap.

........Join the new generation farmers who wouldn't take any valid decision on their farm until the farm soil fertility is ascertain.

Ecological factors, global warming cum Human spacial pattern have degraded our land, hence, there is urgent need to know the level of degradation of that farm soil before putting to use.

Somebody ask me if the mobile soil test is accurate? My response is a big NO!! Why??

1. It do not give an accurate data report of the soil fertility
2. It can not measure or give the CEC value....the CEC value Indicate whether or not you Macro and micro element if available will be realised into the soil
3. It does not indicate the % of macro and micro element
4. It does not indicate the soil textural class
5. If you are a scientist, you will understand that you can not use a data gotten from a portion of your land to generalise. I mean you can not deep the mobile soil tester into a portion of the land and use the result outcome to generalise for the whole farm. That is gross erroneous. Rather the test we do at kenfarm is volumetric analysis where sample of soil is picked from the whole farm land, processed and taken to the lab for analysis. The result is a true picture of the whole farm land.

Note that you can not keep using this mobile tester to test your soil and expect a good yield. When you do it right, you get it right.

Cheers!!

STAGE A

Cassava cultivation is another yet to discover cash crop. Plantain farmers do not cultivate cassava because it do not give much output like the plantain and it require more input compare to plantain. However, it yet to be discovered by potential farmers that cassava demand is increasing dramatically just as the cost price of the finished product (garri) is increasing in the market every day. If this is the new development, I think it is time you invest that cash lying fallow in the bank and land left unused on cassava cultivation.

kenfarm is not only in the Agric Biz to scup cash but also in the Agric Biz to beam a search light on economically rewarding crop cultivation. This is the reason you should contact us for your viable cassava stem both the Vitamin A cassava stem and the TME 419 cassava stem. We also help you set up your cassava farm as well as help ascertain your farm soil fertility. Your soil fertility is one important factor you want to know before putting your land to use if it is yours. It also an important factor you want to know before renting that land for Agric purposes (either for plantain plantation or cassava farming). You don’t want to plant your crop only to observe stunted growth due to lack of some maro & micro nutrients essential for the growth of your crop.

Nevertheless, below is a brief explanation of key information you need to know before venturing into cassava cultivation.

1. For those of us in Lagos and Ogun who wish to either purchase a farm land or Rent a farm land for Agric Biz, visit any farming settlement(i prefer Owode - Idiroko/border axis and for those in Ibadan environ, you can either buy or rent farm anywhere along Iseyin road or Arulogun road off Ojoo(kenfarm do not sell or rent farm).

2. After securing a farm land, contact kenfarm immediately via 08038623884 for your soil analysis.
(N.B: Do your soil analysis before renting that farm land because……)

3. Carry out your second and third ploughing (10 to 14 days after first ploughing). It is important to note that once the first plough starts, u must start sourcing for a reliable cassava stem(cassava stem to cover 1hectare will be about 25- 30bundles. For cost of a bundle for each of the two type of stems contact kenfarm)

4. After the second plough u might have gotten your cassava stem down from kenfarm. Now its time for planting

5. Wages for planting vary but we approximate to 800naira per alapin (2 alapin = 1 plot, 15 plots(1hectare) = 30 alapin that 800naira x 30 alapin = 24,000naira/hectare for planting. Cost is negotiable and vary with location
6. After about 1 month of planting, its time for first weeding. Cost is 1000 per alapin x 30 alapin = 30,000naira/hectare. Cost is negotiable and vary with location.

7. Immediately after the first weeding fertilizer is applied. Currently a bag of fertilizer goes for 7k and u need 3bags = 21k. Again 200/alapin for application x 30alapin = 6000naira
8. At the 3rd month, second weeding is carried out. Same price as first weeding

9. At the 6th month, third weeding is carried out
10. From the 8th month your cassava is ready for sale

STAGE B
Now this is the marketing aspect of the Biz and you can only qualify to this stage only if you have done all the above without making mistakes. kenfarm can be your guardian to achieve all these stage above.

My analysis below is subject to verification and of cause vary with location. Do your market findings to verify what is obtainable at your location.
A basket of cassava goes for 7500 (last time I checked). The actual money u get is 5500 to 6000 depending on d distance of the farm to the market.
The Break down goes thus, Out of the 7,500naira, 1000naira or 1500naira goes to transportation of a Basket of cassava from your farm to the market (by Bike). Price depend on d distance to the nearest market. The labourer that harvest and arrange the cassava in the basket charge 500naira. Now you know how much it cost you to get a backer ready for supply.
Now 3 baskets = 1ton
so instead of getting 22,500naira on 1 ton of cassava, the actual money u get is btw 16500naira to 18,000naira. Now that is the figure u should work with so that you don’t raise your hopes high
Processing your cassava into garri gives u times 2 the value.
I have experimented it. This is not multiplier effect, not internet farming, not computer agriculture, not even rocket science but real practical commercial Agriculture.
We tried an experiment using 4 cab stars. 2 went for direct sales while the other two went to processing into garri. By d time we were through, the processing of cassava into garri yielded more income.
Hence, we encourage our esteem clients who are still skeptical of whether to go into selling of cassava tubers or processing of the tuber to finished product ( e.g. garri) to make their choice. Outright sales of the cassava tubers gave us profit of 120,000naira for the two cab stars, while we got a profit of 200,000naira for the other 2cab stars after sales of the garri.
Conclusively, if I just gave you a reason to utilize that fund or land of your lying idle, do not hesitate to contact us via WhatsApp line 08038623884 to do your soil analysis and place Oder for plantain sucker or cassava stems.

Agriculture / Re: Treated Giant Hybrids Elephants Plantain Suckers Here For Sale Rapid Fruit by Ken4agent(m): 5:35pm On Aug 25, 2018
We made another harvest of 28bunches from our experimental farm yesterday and was picked up by our new distributor in Lagos and sold handsomely.

Client has been asking me how it is possible to sustain a plantain plantation to avoid desertification?

To ensure your plantation keep producing fruit for the next 5-7years you must practise the following
1. Always replant another sucker on the sport you just cut off a sucker which fruit have been harvested. Except in a situation where the parent sucker already has offspring to start a new generation

2. Ensure you make the plantation weed free

3. Do not stay away from the farm. Visit as frequent as possible to identify early symptom of desease out break especially Nematode

4. Apply compost manure for the nest generation
