We made another harvest of 28bunches from our experimental farm yesterday and was picked up by our new distributor in Lagos and sold handsomely.

Client has been asking me how it is possible to sustain a plantain plantation to avoid desertification?

To ensure your plantation keep producing fruit for the next 5-7years you must practise the following
1. Always replant another sucker on the sport you just cut off a sucker which fruit have been harvested. Except in a situation where the parent sucker already has offspring to start a new generation

2. Ensure you make the plantation weed free

3. Do not stay away from the farm. Visit as frequent as possible to identify early symptom of desease out break especially Nematode

4. Apply compost manure for the nest generation

Are we aware that the topography of your farmland determines what method of planting sucker you are to adopt??......a client invited kenfarm to their farm to avaluate the cause of 60% of the suckers they planted is rotening in the hole.

After our evaluation, kenfarm discover the farm land topography was more like a bed with very unnoticeable stop slop preventing run off. Thus, all the water accumulate at the base of the sucker couple with the fact that the farmland is waterlog.

Our recommendations was to replant the roten sucker but ensure no pothole is left round the planted sucker base to prevent accumulation of water at the sucker base and also to enhance runn off......other recommendations are ......

Please I want to sell mature cassava tuber, based in Ibadan, 2 acres. Can you buy

We appreciate your interest in our services. However I must say this is not a good time to sell your tubers as the price of tubers at farm gate has crashed helplessly. In this regards I will advise you process the tubers into garri and sell off. I guess you make a little more cash this way.

kenfarm is still researching into why the cost of Tubers has crashed down and have refused to rise again since 1year now.....findings will be communicated..........

On the alternative when you disposed off tour cassava farm consider going into plantain farm

Our experimental farm produced the 3rd harvest yesterday as I visited for routine farm check to realised fruit are available to harvest

Also, we sold off some suckers which prompted me to instruct my staff to make heap round the desuckerd suckers. It is important you cover up the hole created while desuckering to prevent the parent sucker from falling and also to speedup the rate at which more sucker will emerge.

So now we are making cash off the plantain fruits and sucker......are you still in the category of poeple watching things happen??

It time to join the category of poeple making things happen by call kenfarm to help establish your plantain plantation asap

Cheers!!!

We were at our experimental TME419 cassava farm on Saturday for assessment. I realised that after planting your stem, it is very important to do a head count of your heaps to check for mortality rate and the heap not planted due to omition or maybe oversight.

After my assessment, I realised I needed 5bundles to replant both the heaps having dry stems which never germinate and to replant the omitted heaps. This is a very important operation so many farmers take for granted.

Obviously if you are growing your TME419 farm for commercial purpose, a heap which is not planted or planted but dry off is a great lose.

kenfarm is urging new farmers who has not visited their farm to take a head count of the germinating stem to do so fast......

.however, you may ask me why will a planted stem dry off after planting??

The reason(s) is because
1. The stem may not be viable. That is the planter definitely planted the very thin stem or maybe the shoot which of cause are not viable

2. The positioning of the stem maybe wrong.

3. The area of the soil where stem dried off my be lacking nutrient needs to start germination

4. For more info consult our TME419 cassava cultivation

But we must retirate that weed is our competitor now and you do not want to expose your tender crop to nutrient competition with weed

Your friend just took the best of decision........I met a force man on the check point close to the entrance of a 20 acres farm I was establishing for a client. after stopping me several times and my response to his Question of "where are you going to" was to a farm I am at establishing for a client. He took interest and on one of the days he stopped me, he decided to accompany me to the farm since he was done for the day.

He was impressed after educating him on the input and expected output. In the nutshell, he hired kenfarm to establish same in his 15acres land he acquired in his village and we did. Now it 2years now and his making cash out of his farm and last time we met he told me his 20years in the force has been a waste of time

I also resigned my job to go into farming. If I was to save my salary to do what I have done in 3years I would probably save my whole salary for 50years….not exaggerating

So pls farming can appear rough at the beginning but I tell you in the end you laugh last

Customers has been asking me how and what fertilizer to apply when practising organic farming. This is just to brief us on this:

Fertilizer required for organic production: A healthy dressing of compost at planting time is a must for plantain suckers. Other fertilizer to apply near the plant at planting time is a bone meal based fertilizer which is high in phosphorus (it is good for root establishment).

A week after planting, a fertilizer with higher Nitrogen content such as cured animal manure can be applied on the surface of the suckers to support vegetative growth. Once the Fruit is set, apply a high phosphorus fertilizer every 3 weeks. Other organic phosphorus fertilizer that could be applied apart from bone meal is rock phosphate.

The quantity that will be applied is based on phosphorus requirement of Tomato (120 kg p/ha).

The below picture interpretation means you can not keep adopting the same method of farming which has been yielding nothing in the past season and expect good result...it time you do things differently....start the season by checking for your farm soil fertility by co silting kenfarm and we would help you do things differently this season

Congratulations!!!!
However research have it that 1acre of cassava farm planted with TME419 stem should yield 10-15 tones of tuber. But then, whether or not your farm will meetup this specification depends o the below factors and even more:
1. If you have planted a viable and hybrid stem

2. If you did tour soil analysis to be sure of the nutrient level of the soil, PH, water retaining capacity etc so as to know what type of fertilizer to apply, what Qty and when...remember under and over application is detrimental to yield

3. If you are able to contend with weed at 2-9weeks of planting

4. If you control rudent attack

5. If you replanted dead stem to reduce mortality

6. If you made heaps or you just inserted the stem into the soil

7. If you bought kenfarm consultation book on: TME419 cultivation in the Tropics
Can keep going on and on......

If all these are taken care off, sure bomper harvest is yours IJN

Good luck

Thank you so much for the information. Will call you up shortly

If your plantation is 12months old and you have not start harvesting your fruit for sale.....do not panick if you did the following on your plantation:

1. You controlled weed as much as possible at tender
2. You applied two rounds of NPK
3. Your soil organic matter is above critical level
4. You did a soil test and it indicate your soil PH is OK for plantain cultivation.
5. Your soil is well drained
6. You bought a viable sucker like that sold by kenfarm

If you are able to keep all the above in check and your plantation has not start producing fruit, do not worry. I can assure you from experience that what is delaying the fruiting is the poor rain fall....as soon as the rain fall rate improve I bet you the fruit will all emerge agresively

However, if you did not keep all the above in check and your plantation is yet to fruit at 12months, I will advise you sort the expertise of a plantain plantation farmer like kenfarm asap

We help you correct your errors if it not too late. Otherwise am afraid the yield will surely be discouraging.

Farming is not rocket science....the measure you input is the measure the farm output
Cheers!

Why is it taken my plantation 13months to fruit instead of 9months?

The rate at which your sucker produce fruit depends on the following factors:

1. Whether or not you control weed when the suckers was tender

2. Whether or not you did soil test of the soil to know the level of Macro and Micro nutrient available in the soil to know the Qty of NPK fertilizer to apply and method of application

3. How moist or how well drained is your soil

4. Whether or not you planted your sucker at dry season and fail to wet regularly

5. Whether or not you planted a hybrid so like that of kenfarm

6. If there was poor rain fall just after planting

These and many more factors determines if your plantain will fruit in 9months and if the fruit will be big enough.

How is the rain at your farm.....the climate is unfolding lot of drama that farmers are now becoming worried. The rain started early deceiving some farmers into early planting.....unfortunately it seized when we least expected causing crop planted on soil with poor organic matter to dry up.

This is the reason kenfarm is advocating for knowing your soil fertility before going into planting...if you ascertain the organic content of your farm, you can predict how well your crop will do during temporary drought.

However, kenfarm wish to advise cassava farmers to adopt the method of planting their stem cutting by burying the stem at an angle of 45 degree with the heap. This method will prevent the stem cutting from direct sunlight which can dru up the bub from where the new stem emerge.

For detail consult our TME consultation Book

Good Q, but I need to tell you I did not take it to any market. If I did it won't be bought for such a handsome price. However, when my plantation was 7months old, I started doing market survey to find out the best set if buyer. I keep visiting the buyers to review the price they are willing to buy my plantain.

In the course of my market survey, I realised the boli sellers price offer was way too low.....why You may ask........I find out from them that this is the season for roasting maize. So all of them prefare to rost and sell maize and not plantain. Especially because this is the period plantain is way expensive for them to trade....

So I opted to sell my Giant Elephant plantain to whole sellers and consumers who where willing to buy a bunch for 2-3k and a dozen for 25k.

All i did was spend the whole day driving round town, meeting with all plantain wholesellers, collecting their numbers, documenting it and when I harvested I just put a call through to them and sold it to highest bidder.

In all, you need to create your own market for your farm produce.

However, if you want kenfarm to market your produce, we charge an agreed %
