PoliticsWe Must Stop Senators' Bumper Pay - Prof Sagay by seegi(op): 11:10am On Aug 07, 2017
Prof Itse Sagay has accused federal lawmakers of milking the Nigerian economy, calling for a restructuring process to revitalize governance.

Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay, weekend, lamented the prevailing situation in which he said senators enjoy the powers to appropriate funds for themselves, draining the economy.

He also called for devolution to give more powers to the state and whittle that of the Federal Government. Sagay said: “Politicians are killing themselves to be President, National Assembly members because all the monies are at the centre.

“With that type of self-interest and a few people collecting everything that we have, why should we allow the centre to have all the resources and the state completely impoverish, which is what we have today?”

Sagay, who spoke at the Wole Soyinka Annual Public Lecture in Benin, the Edo State capital, stressed the need for urgent restructuring of the nation into regions, noting that it is the only way to stop the bumper pay being received by the senators.

His words: “It is imperative that we return to the 1963 Constitution, modified to suit our present circumstances, if we are to co-exist in a stable crisis-free and fast-developing nation.

“The senators have wardrobe allowance; but they did not go to Abuja naked. They have newspaper allowance and furniture allowance — about 50 items which they never talk about.

“They only talk about their salaries, which is about N1 million a month. But when you add all these allowances, we are hitting N20 million per month. If you have true federalism, that money will not be available for them to blow.

“These are besides budget padding, which is a stable means of drilling money from the poor people of this nation.”

PoliticsAPC Expels Bayelsa Chair, Two Others by seegi(op): 10:39am On Aug 07, 2017
Two members of the All Progressives Congress in a Niger Delta State have been shown the exit door after reportedly breaching the Code of Conduct of the party.

https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2017/aug/07/Apc%20supporters.jpg

The National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress has expelled the Bayelsa State Chairman of the party, Chief Tiwei Orunimighe, his deputy, Eddy Julius, and the state Secretary, Marlin Daniel, from the party.

The expulsion came amid a lingering crisis between factions loyal to the party leader and former governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva and that of Orunimighe.

The APC national headquarters, in a letter signed by the General Secretary, Mai Mala Buni, said the party’s NEC upheld the August 3, 2017 recommendation of the National Working Committee for Orunimighe and the others to be suspended and expelled over anti-party activities.

The expulsion letter dated August 4, 2017 with reference number APC/NDQ/552/31/017/002, also ordered Orunimighe to hand over the party property in his possession to the party’s vice-chairman of the Bayelsa State Central Senatorial District.

The letter, headlined, ‘Expulsion from the Party’, read, “On behalf of the National Executive Committee of our party, the All Progressives Congress, the National Working Committee at its 23rd regular meeting of Thursday, August 3, 2017, adopted the recommendation of the APC South-South Zonal Executive Committee which deliberated on the report of the Disciplinary Committee that investigated your (Orunimighe’s) anti-party activities in Bayelsa State to the effect that you be suspended and ultimately expelled from the party.

“Consequently, subject to ratification, you are to step aside immediately by way of suspension from the office of the Chairman of Bayelsa State chapter of the APC.

“As a consequence of the above, you are to hand over all party property in your possession to the Zonal Vice-Chairman, Bayelsa Central Senatorial District with immediate effect, while the National Vice-Chairman, South-South, shall coordinate the state chapter of the party.’’

Reacting to the development on Sunday, the Elders and Political Leaders of the APC in Bayelsa has defended the deployment of security operatives party’s secretariat following the suspension and expulsion of the three principal officers of the party.

It said security operatives were immediately deployed by the Nigeria Police and the Department of State Services to safeguard peace among the contending factions while waiting for an official letter from the National Headquarters of the Party.

PoliticsPower Generation Crashes By 1,835.6MW In Three Days by seegi(op): 9:59am On Aug 07, 2017
Electricity generation in Nigeria has continued to falter in the past 72 hours due to hitches in the supply of gas to the power station.

The total quantum of electricity on the nation’s power grid crashed by 1,835.6 megawatts within a period of three days.

After reaching a peak of 4,282.6MW on August 2, 2017, power generation dropped to as low as 2,447MW on August 5, according to the latest data on the performance of the grid obtained in Abuja on Sunday.

Power generation has continued to fluctuate for several months now, as operators blame the development on gas and frequency constraints.

The recent power briefing from the Transmission Company of Nigeria stated that 1,651MW of electricity could not be generated as a result of frequency management constraint on Friday alone, which was due to loss of feeders of power distribution companies.

It also stated that the reported gas constraint resulted in the inability to generate 505MW on the same day. However, further findings showed that electricity generation since the beginning of August had continue to hover between 2,387MW and 4,280MW.

On Wednesday, data indicated that gas-fired electricity-generating turbines in seven stations across the country were dormant, a development that adversely affected power generation.

The industry data showed that on August 2, all the hydro and steam power stations had at least one hydro or steam turbine that was functional. It highlighted three hydro power stations as well as three steam stations.

But out of the 22 gas power generating stations that were captured in the report, seven had dormant turbines, and they were Afam IV-V, Alaoji NIPP, Olorunsogo NIPP, A.E.S, ASCO, Rivers IPP and Gbarain NIPP.

It was also gathered that increased gas constraints to power-producing turbines was another reason why some of the machines were left dormant.

The Executive Secretary, Association of Power Generation Companies, Dr. Joy Ogaji, recently announced that electricity producers were owed over N500bn by the market, adding that this had made it tough for some of the Gencos to pay their gas suppliers.

Ogaji had said, “For us to be able to procure gas, we need money. Gas companies are owed several billions by us. We are being owed nearly N600bn and we are owing gas companies nearly N200bn.

“Most of them now say they cannot supply anymore until we pay. In fact, most of the companies like Shell and Total now do what we call pay-before-service. And since the market is paying us 29 per cent out of the expected 100 per cent, how do we pay for the gas?

“Some of these power companies that you’ve heard about cannot put all their machines on, they will just select from maybe out of five machines; they will just put on two or one, depending on what you can pay for with respect to gas. That’s the situation and it is a precarious and pitiable state.”

EducationNigeria Universities To Get Free Wi-fi Facility by seegi(op): 9:32am On Aug 07, 2017
Some Nigerian university students will be given a taste of free wifi provided by a private limited liability company.

Surfwella, a free Wi-Fi facility, will be made available in Nigerian universities, from this week, to give a boost to tertiary education in the country.

The Chief Marketing Officer, Surfwella, Olusola Bankole, said on Sunday that the firm would make available the free Wi-Fi in all university campuses in the country.

Surfwella is a Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of an indigenous 4G operator, Cyberspace Network Limited, and a platform for social and cognitive computing.

“The University of Abuja will be the first beneficiary, with the service scheduled for launch on the institution’s campus this week Wednesday,” Bankole said.

According to him, while the firm is unveiling the service at the University of Abuja and other institutions, it is still building and adding more features on the Internet infrastructure.

“The usage is totally free. No payment, no subscription, no data purchase, and no need for modems. It is free Internet in the most useable form on the Wi-Fi,” he said.

He said, “The Lagos State University will be next, followed in quick succession by the College of Agric, Lafiaji, and the University of Lagos.”

Bankole said that Surfwella was doing this as a way to give back to the society.

“It is our own form of Corporate Social Responsibility. It is all about empowering the students to be globally competitive, and access to free Internet is the best way to empower the budding oncoming Generation-Z.

“The whole idea of this project is to ensure that future graduates from universities across the country will compete with their contemporaries from other countries of the globe. More so, the surest way to be an entrepreneur is to acquiring Information and Communications Technology skills,” he added.

PoliticsBuhari Calls Nigerian Governor On Phone From London by seegi(op): 10:25am On Aug 04, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari who is currently recuperating in London for over 85 days has made a call to his APC counterpart in the South-western part of Nigeria.

The Presidency on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari called the Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, on the telephone to commiserate with him over the death of his mother, Alhaja Saratu.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

Shehu said Buhari expressed sympathy with the governor, describing his mother “as a great woman who was a pillar of discipline to her children.’’

He further quoted the President as saying that the matriarch of the Aregbesola family deserved great honour for “the sacrifices she made to bring up her children on the path of sound moral character and commitment to good reputation.’’

Buhari said the governor’s mother contributed immeasurably to the building of a respectable pedigree for her family by raising disciplined and humble children like the governor.

He prayed that Allah would bless her soul, reward all her good deeds with paradise and comfort the family she left behind.

Meanwhile, the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; and former Interim Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, were among dignitaries that attended the three-day fidau prayer organised for the deceased. The octogenarian mother of the governor died in Ilesa on Tuesday and was buried the same day according to Islamic injunction.

Aregbesola’s son, Kabiru, who spoke on behalf of the family, said the family was still in shock over the death of Alhaja Saratu.

He said, “Mama left us suddenly. She was not sick at the time she left us. We are still in shock but God knows best.”

Kabiru said the family was grateful to everybody for the love shown to the family following the death of its matriarch.

Other dignitaries present at the fidau were former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola; Senator Musiliu Obanikoro; Wale Babalakin; Gen. Alani Akinrinade (retd); and Alhaji Diekola Oyedele.

SportsBREAKING News: PSG Pays N95billion To Buy Neymar... See Interesting Details by seegi(op): 10:58pm On Aug 03, 2017
After many talks, Barcelona has accepted a whopping 222 million (N95billion) from Paris Saint-Germain for Brazilian international, Neymar.

https://www.tori.ng/userfiles/image/2017/aug/03/neymar1.JPG

According to Goal.com , Barcelona has accepted the payment of Neymar's €222 million (£198m/N95 billion) release clause as the Brazil forward's move to Paris Saint-Germain moves closer.

This was issued in a statement on Thursday by Barcelona and confirmed by his representatives who visited in person to pay the figure.

The club released an official statement on Thursday that read: "On Thursday afternoon Neymar Jr's legal representatives visited in person the club's offices and made the payment of €222m in the player's name with regards to the unilateral termination of the contract that united both parties.

"As such, the club will pass on to UEFA the details of the above operation so that they can determine the disciplinary responsibilities that may arise from this case."

Earlier on Thursday, La Liga refused to accept an attempt to pay the release clause at their offices in Madrid, leading to France's Ligue de Football Professionnel to call on the Spanish body to "abide by the rules of FIFA and its responsibilities".

Neymar's move to PSG now looks set to be completed imminently, with the Ligue 1 side reportedly ready to unveil the Brazilian on Friday.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has previously suggested PSG's move for Neymar would not be possible without contravening UEFAs' Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

It is understood UEFA will investigate the deal if it suspects that there has been any breach of FFP rules. PSG congratulated on Neymar swoop
La Liga president Javier Tebas has also threatened to report PSG to UEFA over the deal, which will set a new world-record transfer, smashing the previous record set by Paul Pogba's €105m move from Juventus to Manchester United a year ago.

PoliticsBiafra Agitation: Aisha Buhari And Women Send Public Message To Nnamdi Kanu by seegi(op): 5:02pm On Aug 03, 2017
Leader of the Independent People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu has been indirectly communicated to about the unity of Nigeria which he is trying to break with the exit of the Igbo nation.

Against the backdrop of agitation for the disintegration of the country by some secessionists groups, First Lady Aisha Buhari, and South East women on Thursday said the unity of the country was non negotiable.

This is even as the women resolved to mobilise themselves to counter hate speeches and tribal sentiments and promote the oneness of the country.

Speaking at the 2017 Imo Women Annual August Meeting in Owerri, Mrs. Buhari charged women to work towards conflict resolution and peaceful coexistence in various communities.

She said, “This gathering is a celebration of the resourcefulness of womanhood. It is important because at meetings like this, Igbo women gather to discuss developmental issues and peaceful coexistence at the community levels.”

The wife of Imo State governor, Nkechi Rochas Okorocha, said that from time immemorial, women had been agents of positive changes, growth and development, adding that no society would do better without the contributions of women.

She said, “Women, now is the time for us all to answer this clarion call of coming together to continue building and fortifying bridges of friendship across the Niger and to believe in the mantra that there is strength in unity.”

The state governor, Rochas Okorocha, acknowledged that the country was on trial at the moment, but expressed optimism that the future of the country would be better than than it is at the present.

United Kingdom returnee, Nnamdi Kanu who spent 18 months behind bars has declared that no election will hold in the South-eastern part of Nigeria unless the government organises a referendum for the exit of the Igbos.

PoliticsAPC Members Are Not Happy With The Party - Senate President Saraki by seegi(op): 3:10pm On Aug 03, 2017
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki has said that he is not leaving the All Progressives Congress even though party members are not happy.

President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said contrary to insinuations, he was a full member of All Progressives Congress (APC) and remained there “body and spirit’’.

Saraki said at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja that the speculations were part of the mischievous activities against him and urged the public the discountenance them.

He said that those spreading such information were doing so as propaganda for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Saraki, however, blamed the development on inactivity in the APC, saying that the party’s leadership had failed to focus it properly. He, therefore, charged the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party to wake up to its responsibility as it had remained without activities for too long.

The president of the senate said that the docility in the party was giving room for unfounded allegations against some of its members.

According to him, if the party had organised regular NEC meetings and other caucus meetings, there would have been enough activities to determine who the true members are.

“I think there is no APC member that will tell you he is happy with the state of affairs of the party; there is a lot of work that we need to do.

“The party that hasn’t met for a long time, it’s beyond comprehension and I think that we should all quickly put that in order and start to get NEC, caucus and others going.
“We need to start early to get the drive in the party back.

“Luckily, in spite of the lack of meetings here and there, if you go round the 36 states, it is in just few states, not many states, where you may see internal crisis.

“It’s not that the party, at the grassroots level, had a lot of crisis here and there; it’s just for the administrative aspect and the national executive to provide leadership.’’

Saraki also said that if there had been meetings of the party, his detractors would have seen how actively involved he was in the party “and will not have any room to spread such lies’’.

“They are just using that to do a propaganda for PDP. Where are they seeing that I am not in the party in spirit? Where is the spirit they are judging from, where are they seeing the spirit?

“That is why I am saying that the reason for all that speculation is because the party is docile, because the party is dormant.
“If the party goes back to what we all know that every month, we hold NEC meeting, you have caucus, they will stop all these `spirit’ and no `spirit’ thing.

“It is not that they have had a meeting and you didn’t see me, and then, you can say that yes, my spirit is not there.

“I can’t call a meeting of the party. I have expressed my view and the responsibility of calling a party for a meeting is that of those who we elected as party officials.

On the allegation that his emergence as president of the senate was an affront to the party, Saraki said that he had kept the wishes of the party, including zoning of senate president’s position.

He stated that at the last meeting of the party held over zoning of national offices, the position of president of the senate was zoned to the North-Central.

“It was after that the party started to do different things, shifting its position.

“The point I’m making is that that’s over two years ago; two years now, is that the reason why the party cannot hold meetings?

“My own point is that the executive of the party just needs to wake up and start managing the party.

“There is no day when I see the party chairman that I don’t tell him, `Mr Chairman, we must put the party in focus’.

“The rules of the party also give you room by which you can call a meeting, but I think we have not got to that point yet.

“I think we should do it in a smooth manner, but what I want to assure you is that the foundation is still strong. If there were crisis all over the place, that would have been a different matter,” he said.

Saraki expressed hope that the party would hold its mini-convention as scheduled as delegates had been elected on Saturday.

“ You will see that after the mini-convention, all that speculation of body here, spirit there, would go away,” he said.
