Maiduguri – The Nigerian Air Force said on Saturday it had foiled an attempt by Boko Haram to breach the peaceful Eid-el Kabir celebration in Borno.

The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, stated this at a feast organized for officers and men of the service at the 105 Composite Group, Maiduguri.

Abubakar had held a grand feast for service men carrying out the counter-insurgency operation in the North-East, as part of the Eid-el Kabir celebration.

He disclosed that the Air Force in a joint operation with the army had destroyed insurgents’ hideouts thereby scuttling their plans to attack communities during the festivities.

“Boko Haram insurgents planned to destabilize the Sallah celebration, but with help of the Almighty Allah and our collective efforts, we foiled their plans.

“Our objective is to protect life and property, safeguard the national territorial integrity and make our communities safe so that farmers can go back to their settlements and cultivate their farmlands.

“We will remain in the forest to protect our people.

“The insurgents are on the run due to concerted military efforts; the only option left for them is to surrender,” he said.

Abubakar congratulated the men and officers of the service for their dedication and gallantry, saying that Nigerians were proud of their achievements.

The air chief disclosed that the Air Force command had accorded priority to training and improvement of the welfare of its personnel.

He added that arrangement had been concluded for the training of air force personnel within and outside the country, to strengthen defence operations.

“We are sending some service men for training in Jordan.

“We are committed to providing logistics, uniforms and ammunition to counter terrorism while construction of housing is in progress to provide decent accommodation for officers and men serving in the counter-insurgency campaign,” he added.

Abubakar urged officers and men of the service to remain disciplined, display high sense of professionalism and respect civilians in the discharge of their duties.

He also commended the people for their support to the service and called on them to provide useful information that would be helpful to the fight against Boko Haram.

Meanwhile, Lawali Babagana Ibrahim, the Ward Head of the Pompomari area of Maiduguri, has applauded the service for the successes recorded in the counter-insurgency campaign.

Ibrahim said the collaboration between the service and the vigilante group had helped to strengthen security in the area.

“The service donated two cows to the vigilante group to enable them to celebrate Sallah.

“There is mutual understanding between the service and the host community,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Borno Deputy Governor, Usman Durkwa, had declared that this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration was the most peaceful the state had recorded in the past seven years.

The Kano State Government has set up a nine-man committee to recover over N900 million given as loans to rice farmers under the Anchor Borrower Programme of the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN).

Prof. Mahmoud Daneji, the Managing Director of the state Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA), disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Kano on Saturday.

He said members of the committee included representatives of the CBN, Bank of Agriculture(BOA) and Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria (RIFAN).

Daneji said the committee was expected to visit the defaulting farmers in all the 44 local government areas of the state with a view to ensuring that they pay the loan within the stipulated period.

According to him, the defaulting farmers have been given up to the end of this harvesting season to pay the loans or face prosecution.

“They have up to the end of the harvesting season to pay the loans or else the government will go ahead to recover the loans through legal means,” Daneji said.

He lamented that a total of N906 million was disbursed to the rice farmers in the state but regretted that not up to N6 million was recovered.

Newsmen recall that the state chapter of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) recently constituted a similar committee with a view to recovering the loans.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has frozen over N8, 627,458,773.36 billion in three accounts of Hajiya Muinat Bola Shagaya, an associate and friend of a former First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

Shagaya’s relationship with about 10 firms/account names are also being investigated by the anti-graft agency, it was learnt yesterday.

But Shagaya, who did not hold any public appointment during the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has dragged Unity Bank to the High Court of Lagos State for allowing the EFCC to Post No Debit (PND) on her accounts without a valid court order.

She says the action taken on her accounts violates Section34 (1) of the EFCC Act, 2004.

Besides, the withdrawal ban placed on one of her accounts has prevented her from defraying N514, 800,000 incurred as cumulative costs in the course of an Aircraft Lease Agreement of a bombardier Jet, according to documents which Shagaya filed and deposed to at the Court alongside with her counsel, Napoleon Emeaso-Nwachukwu.

Hearing of the matter is slated for September 28.

However, Unity Bank says its hands are tied by the law in complying with the EFCC’s directives to freeze Shagaya’s accounts.

The EFCC in a letter to the Unity Bank Managing Director in respect of one of the frozen accounts said: “The commission is investigating a case in which the above-mentioned account featured.

“In view of the above, you are requested to kindly check the table below and provide us with Certified True Copies (CTC) of the following information, which should include but not limited to the following: (i) The deposit slips/telex copies (front and back) that conveyed the authority of the transactions; (ii) Any investment made with the funds in any of your products which should include fixed/term deposit and their liquidation and the interest incurred, Banks Acceptance, Commercial Papers and any other relevant information in relation to these.

The EFCC listed the transactions in the said account as “N300m(Bola Shagaya RTGS); N300m (Additional N300FTD at 15% TRAN); N500m (Time Deposit); N2,317,013,698.64 (BNG COLLAOS FOR FTD-CUSTOMER ACCOL); N2.3billion (Opening a Time Deposit Account); N292, 495, 029.82 (Withdrawal from Time Deposit); N292, 495, 029.82 (TAK Asset Mgt Limited); N300m (Term Loan booked for 356 days); and N2,025,455,015.08 (BNG COLLAPS OF FTD Customer Account.”
In a separate letter Cr: 3000/EFCC/LS/STF/ STF3MP/ Vol.11/182 which Shagaya made available to the court, the EFCC asked Unity Bank to Post No Debit(PND) on 10 accounts linked with her.

The account names are (i) First Deep Water Discovery Limited; (ii) Bola Shagaya; (iii) FAPLiNs Nigeria Limited (iv) Lingo Nigeria Limited; (v) Buri Barclays BDC; (vi) Links Global Synergy Ltd; (vii) OKIOIL Nig. Ltd; (vii) JEMARVIZ Nig Ltd; (ix) PJ Oil and Gas Ltd; and (x) AFDIN Ventures Ltd.
The anti-graft commission said: “The commission is investigating a case in which the above mentioned accounts featured.

“You are requested to kindly place the account on Post No Debit (PND) category pending the conclusion of the investigation.
“This request is made pursuant to Section 38(1) and (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004 and Section 21 of Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011.”

In the third letter, the EFCC said it was looking into two other accounts including Voyage Oil and Gas and Bola Shagaya from 2008 to date.
It said: “The commission is investigating a case in which the above mentioned accounts featured. In view of the above, you are requested to kindly provide us with Certified True Copies (CTC) of the following information which should include but not limited to the following: (i) The Mandate Card and statement(s) of all domiciliary and Naira account(s) in the above mentioned accounts from 2008 to date with letter of certification in accordance with Section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011; (ii) any investment made with the funds in any of your products which should include fixed/term deposit and their liquidation and the interest incurred, Bank Acceptance, Commercial Papers and any other relevant information related to these.

“You are further requested to kindly place the account on Post No Debit (PND) category pending the conclusion of investigation.”

But Shagaya accused Unity Bank of complicity on her travails following the bank’s alleged failure to exercise the requisite due diligence.

She said the freezing of her accounts did not comply with Section 34(1) of the EFCC Act, 2004. She specifically referred to the bank’s refusal to allow her to make transactions on Account 000326118 including payment of N514, 800,000 to Global Apex Air Limited, through Heavywind Integrated Services, for the lease of a bombardier Jet.

She said the Aircraft Lease Agreement between her and Global Apex Air Limited has been terminated with her forfeiting US$1million.

In an affidavit she deposed to, Shagaya said: “The official of the Defendant (Unity Bank) whom my Personal Assistant relayed the development to, informed him that on the 3rd of November, 2016, the Defendant received a letter from the EFCC through their Lagos office informing it that my account with it is under investigation and requested that the account be put on “Post No Debit” pending the outcome of the investigation hence the Defendant’s inability to honour my payment instruction.

“Initially I laughed off the excuse as a ploy of the Defendant to deter me from taking legal actions against it for dishonouring my payment instructions especially that of the 31st of October 2016 which ultimately led to the termination of the Aircraft Lease with Global Apex Air Ltd. And the loss of the sum of One Million United States Dollars deposited with the Lessor by me.

“On the 27th of January, 2017 the Defendant responded to my Solicitor’s letter. In its response, the defendant stated that: “it observed that long before your client forwarded her cheques and payment instruction to the Bank as indicated in your letter under reference, the EFCC had formally informed the Bank that an investigation relating to your client’s account was ongoing and sought the cooperation on the Bank accordingly.” The Defendant’s letter ended by stating that “Based on our understanding and the fact that the Bank was already aware that the Law Enforcement Agency had taken definite steps to comply with Section 34(1) of the EFCC Act, 2004, behoves the Bank not to allow the dissipation or removal funds in your client’s account without appropriate clearance from the Law Enforcement Agency or a judicial order directing the release of the funds to your client.”

“I will also contend at the hearing of this Suit that the Defendant negligently and wrongfully failed to exercise the requisite due diligence and by extension, the duty of care it owed me as my banker prior to complying with the alleged freezing instruction from the EFCC.

“The Defendant did not request and ensure it was obliged the Freezing Order from a court of competent jurisdiction prior to complying with the instruction to freeze the Claimant’s account

“The Defendant failed to honour the Claimant’s payment instructions of the 31st of October 2016 as well as those of the 1st and 2nd November 2016 which preceded the alleged instruction from the EFCC.

“The Defendant failed to promptly notify the Claimant of the freezing other account. The freezing of the Claimant’s account did not comply with Section 34(1) of the EFCC Act, 2004.
“Since the unlawful freezing of my account by the Defendant, I have not been able to transact with that account due to my inability to access same thereby causing business losses and opportunities.

“By reason the Defendant’s action, I have suffered loss of reputation and damages and my person brought to disrepute, public opprobrium and odium.

“The actions of the Defendant which consist in unlawfully freezing my account without an Order of a Court of competent jurisdiction and failing to disclose same to me promptly was unreasonable as well as defamatory of me before my business associates who now see me as a criminal and an untrustworthy fellow who is in the habit of issuing due cheques and payment instructions that she knew would not be honoured.

She said she had lost a lot of business goodwill since her accounts were frozen including
o The loss of $1,000,000 deposited with Global Apex Air Ltd. Due to her in ability to pay accrued costs in line with Aircraft Lease Agreement which was occasioned by the failure of the Defendant to oblige the Claimant’s payment instruction to Heavywind Integrated Services.

o Loss of business opportunities and goodwill occasioned by her inability to operate her account domiciled with the Defendant due to its freezing.
o Loss of reputation occasioned by the Defendant’s wrongful dishonouring of her payment instructions to third parties.

“If not compelled by this Court, the Defendant will not on its own volition unfreeze my account even when it is glaring the Defendant had wrongfully breached the duty of care it owes complying with an illegal instruction in freezing my account.”

But in a letter to Shagaya’s counsel, Unity Bank said it has a legal and ethical responsibility to render assistance to law enforcement agencies.

The bank explained its constraints in a letter by its Head, Legal Services Department, Mr. Alaba Williams and Mr. Olusegun Olukoya of the same department.

The bank said: “While the Bank respects the contractual nature of the relationship with your client, it is without prejudice to the Bank’s standing as a responsible law abiding Corporate Citizen.

“In spite of the Bank’s contractual relationship with your client, that relationship is not without a legal and ethical responsibility to render assistance to law enforcement agencies when required of the Bank.
“Considering the sensitive nature of the investigation touching your client’s account as advised by the EFCC in October 2016, the Bank had to exercise caution in relation to further transactions, especially debits, in the account of your client under investigation.

“The need for the Bank to exercise due caution in the matter of the operation of your client’s account after receipt of notification of the ongoing investigation by the EFCC was informed by our understanding of various existing statutory provisions relevant to the request of the EFCC received by the Bank.

“Based on our understanding and the fact that the Bank was already aware that the Law Enforcement Agency had taken definite steps to comply with section 34(1) the EFCC Act, 2004. It behoves the Bank not to allow the dissipation or removal of the funds in your client’s account under investigation, before the Court Order seeking to preserve the funds was obtained.

“The contractual relationship between your client and the Bank does not permit us to pre-empt the investigation by the Law Enforcement Agency and the related Court Proceedings which outcome could lead to forfeiture of the funds in the same account.

“The Bank could be considered an accessory after the fact if it allowed the dissipation of the funds in your client’s account without appropriate clearance from the Law Enforcement Agency or a judicial order directing the release of the funds to your client.

“Therefore contrary to the allegation in your letter, the Bank had a proper justification for refusing the payment instructions from your client for funds to be removed from her account in issue when there was an ongoing investigation by the EFCC in respect of the said funds. The Bank is therefore not in breach of any contractual obligation to your client. The Bank is also not liable to your client for the sum of N700,000,000.00 (Seven Hundred Million Naira) or any other sum that matter as damages claimed by you.
“Please, note that Unity Bank Plc. is committed to comply with the extant laws and Regulations of all competent Authorities and Jurisdictions.

“In addition to adopting best practices; ethical and legal considerations always guide our commercial decisions protecting the good name and the reputation of the bank remains the primary consideration in all actions taken by the Bank. Accordingly, the Bank protects its products and services from being involved in allegation of unlawful activities. Hence we will cooperate fully with all Regulators and Law enforcement Agencies.

“We are of the humble opinion that your client should kindly resolve any outstanding issues with the Law Enforcement Agency and facilitate the removal of the “Post No Debit” on her account with the Bank.
“Litigation against the Bank will therefore not be necessary in the circumstance.”

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, said on Saturday that all ongoing projects embarked upon by his administration would be completed and handed over to his successor in good condition next year.

Fayose, who spoke at the Grand- Finale of the 2017 edition of the Udiroko Cultural Festival in Ado Ekiti, said no single developmental project embarked upon by his administration would be abandoned.

The governor was the chief host at the cultural event in his capacity as the newly installed Apesin chieftaincy title holder in Ado Ekiti.

.He listed his administration’s projects to include the N5.7 billion over-head bridge (fly- over) in Ado Ekiti as well as the N3.8billion ulltra-modern Kings Market in Ado Ekiti.

Fayose also listed the new High Court Headquarters project in Ado Ekiti and the local government headquarters dual road projects across the state, among others.

The governor said he would still do several other things that would distinguish the state capital from other towns before the expiration of his term in October 2018.

Finidi was one of the 59 shortlisted coaches interviewed by the NFF technical committee for vacant national teams’ posts.

“Finidi has told NFF officials he is willing to coach the U17s for free,” SCORENigeria quoted an official of the NFF.

“He has already told the technical committee he is not disturbed about the poor finances of the NFF which may cause salaries to be delayed for several months. “He said he is only driven to give something back to the country that made him and he believes he can impact what he has learnt working with age-group teams in Mallorca to make a difference with the country’s cadet team.”

Finidi ruled the Eagles right wing and Emmanuel Amuneke took care of the left wing during the country’s Golden Era.

Amuneke has since set a mark with the U17s – he won the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile two years ago after he was assistant coach to the team who won the same competition in Abu Dhabi in 2013.

The governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima has stated that leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu is acting out of ignorance.

The Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission has distributed N10.3 million to 86 District Heads to buy cows for orphans during the Eid-el-kabir celebrations coming up next weekend.

Malam Lawal Maidoki, its Chairman, in a brief speech shortly before disbursing the money, stated that the gesture was part of government’s effort to ease the suffering of the orphans and the needy.

Maidoki said that the financial constrains facing the nation had not stopped government from executing its good intentions toward a better life for the poor and vulnerable in the society.

He said that the money was routed through the traditional rulers because they were the closest avenue through which government could reach targeted persons like orphans and the physically challenged.

Maidoki said that government would soon construct Zakkat offices across all districts in the 23 local government areas, and urged the District Heads to support the commission’s tree planting efforts to improve Sokoto’s environment.

A representative of Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar III, Alhaji Kabiru Usman, the Sarkin Yakin Binji, who flagged off the disbursement of the money, commended Gov Aminu Tambuwal for the efforts to ease the suffering of the people.

He called on the District Heads to ensure proper use of the money to improve the lot of the poor and particularly ease the hardship of orphans.

An Iyaganku Senior Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan has ordered a herdsman, Abubakar Likita, to be remanded at Agodi Prisons for allegedly raping a married woman.

A Senior Magistrate, Patricia Adetuyibi, who gave the order, ruled that Mr. Likita, 19, should be remanded, pending an advice from the Oyo State director of public prosecutions.

Mrs. Adetuyibi adjourned the case until October 5 for mention.

The accused, who rears cattle around Idiya Village in Ile-Ido, Ibadan is being tried on a charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of a married woman.

The plea of the accused was not taken.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Olalekan Adegbite, told court that the accused committed the offence on August 14 at about 5 p.m. at Idiya Village.

Mr. Adegbite said: “on the fateful day, the woman was in her farm when Likita attacked her from behind.

“The attack resulted in the woman sustaining injury on the back of her forehead and neck where the accused held her.”

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 357, punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol.38, Vol. II Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The Nigerian minister of youths and sports, Solomon Dalung, has said the Peace Corps bill if signed into law would save Nigeria from the menace of criminality as its core mandate was to engage the youth.

The minister stated this on Wednesday when he formally received the copy of the harmonised version of the bill passed by National Assembly in his office.

He expressed hope that the presidency would give favourable consideration to the bill, which he said teeming Nigerian youth were anxiously waiting for.

“If we have this organisation coming up and depopulating these young people, it will be a celebration that our problems are reducing on daily basis. On this note, I call on all Nigerians with the initiative of opportunity of engaging our young people, to please put it into practice. Let’s join our hands together and engage our young people productively so that we can be sure of a better country tomorrow,” Mr Dalung said.

He also said if Nigerian leaders fail to invest in youth today, they lack the moral ground to complain against criminality tomorrow.

Mr. Dalung, who also reacted to the recent clampdown on the Corps by the Nigerian Police, said the activities of the organisation “since 18 years ago, were not different from all other voluntary organisations which he was familiar with.”

“Just like every other voluntary organisation under the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development, we have the Nigerian Boys Scout, they wear uniform, they have regimented operation, they train and they contribute positively to maintaining law and order in this country.

“The Nigerian Man’O’War dress even in the manner that is similar to the military. They are involved in trainings that are regimental and they have been operating and making great contributions to peace and security in Nigeria,” he said.

He added that the current crime profile of the nation needed an equal efficient response.

“We must not turn blind eyes to the effort of anybody in this country who is legitimately involved, in engaging our young people, to train them into the future leaders, by engaging them within the time space in which they will officially have something doing.’’

He admonished the officers of the Corps to forgive those who opposed the bill, put the past behind them and work towards delivering on the core mandate of the organisation.

“Rather, you must put the bitter experiences behind you and look forward to delivering on your vision and mission, so that you would not seem to have betrayed Nigerians who have confidence in you.”

The Senate had recently passed a bill to make the Nigerian Peace Corps a paramilitary agency after years of stiff opposition from security agencies including the military, the police and the SSS.

Critics of the bill say such agency duplicates the functions of already existing security and paramilitary agencies, and creates a new bureaucracy for a government grappling with paying workers’ salaries.

The bill, passed by the National Assembly, is now waiting for the president’s approval. It is not clear if the president will sign the bill as the presidency has not made comments on it.

The Rice Farmers Association of Nigeria, says it is working to access the $30 billion agricultural grant contributed by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other donor agencies for rice production in Africa.

The National President of the association, Alhaji Aminu Goronyo, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Wednesday, that the association had submitted a template that would qualify it for the grant.

According to him, a team of experts from Geneva had met with the association on the grant, which Nigerian farmers can access as much as $600 million.

He said the visit was fallout of the Green Revolution Forum tagged `New Push for Africa’s Agricultural Transformation,’ held in September 2016 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, where the fund was pledged by various agencies.

He said the grant would cover various rice value chains including production, processing, packaging and marketing, and would assist the country attain self sufficiency in rice production.

Goronyo listed other partners that contributed to the fund to include Grow Africa and John Kufor Foundation.

“They said that Nigeria will get about 600 million dollars from the grant, it is going to be a partnership between RIFAN, government and the private sector.

“There is fear around the world that hunger will take over the world particularly Africa.

“That is why some agencies have decided to put their monies together to make sure that enough food is grown in Africa.

“That is why they want to bring the grant to Nigeria and other African countries so that we will be part of the beneficiaries toward achieving self sufficiency, particularly in rice.

“Although rice is mainly the key crop covered by the grant, other crops are still included in the grant,’’he said.

Goronyo commended the CBN’s Anchor Borrowers Programme, saying it had assisted rice farmers across 26 states to improve production.

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation had at the September 2016 in Cote d’Ivoire forum, pledged to commit five billion dollars to the fund while OCP Africa, a fertiliser firm, pledged $150 million dollars.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has felicitated with Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa‘ad Abubakar III, on his 61st birth anniversary.

The Saudi Government has apologised to two Nigerian pilgrims who were maltreated by security personnel at the Madina Airport. The Deputy Governor of Madina region, Sheikh Mohammad Albijawi who tendered the apology during a visit to the victims in their hotel assured that the security officials will be sanctioned for the maltreatment.

He further urged Nigerian pilgrims to be of good conduct and perform the annual spiritual pilgrimage based on the religious guidelines and instructions. He further disclosed that the Saudi authorities have put facilities in place to ensure a hitch free Hajj this year.



The Nigerian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Umaru Salisu Zainabu also commended the Saudi Arabia authorities for a swift response to the incident. Responding, the tortured pilgrims Audu Damina Muhammad and Ibrahim Nani Godi from Nasarawa State expressed their gratitude to the Saudi authorities and the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) for responding to their plight promptly.



The Chairman/CEO, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) Malam Abdullahi Mukhtar Muhammad had recently announced that 79,000 intending Pilgrims were going to perform this year’s Hajj. This he revealed comprised 60,000 under state government quota and 19,000 under private tour operators.



The first airlift from Nigeria took off from the Abuja International Airport on July 30, 2017 and would be concluded by August 26, 2017 when the Jeddah International Airport will be closed. The return of Nigerian pilgrims, PRNigeria gathered will commence on September 6 and the last flight will be on October 8.

As the battle to succeed Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, the out-going Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin, reaches advanced stage, aspirants would this week appear before an interview panel of the university.

The interview would be conducted by the selection committee set up by the University Council to choose a suitable candidate for the position of the Vice-Chancellor for a term of non-renewable five years.

Residents of Daura in Katsina State, are in an upbeat mood over reports of President Muhammadu Buhari’s return to Nigeria after his medical vacation abroad.


The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that those interviewed on Saturday expressed gratitude to Allah for the Presidents recovery and return to Nigeria.

Alhaji Salisu Haro, a civil servant, said the President’s return represents a ray of hope for the nation and prayed that Nigerians would support him to deliver quality leadership that would take the country to the next level.

He commended a section of the media for keeping Nigerians abreast of Buhari’s condition throughout his stay in London, adding that objective journalism would help to accelerate national development.

Alhaji Abdumanaf Daura, APC Northwest Organizing Secretary, described the report as encouraging, saying it has put all those spreading rumours of Buhari’s ill health and death to shame.

He berated those he called unpatriotic elements using the president’s ill health for politics and spread of baseless rumours, saying they should atone for their sins.

The politician thanked Nigerians for their resilience, prayers and understanding during the trying moments of the nation, stressing that Buhari was back into the country for good.

Nura Usman, a civil servant, expressed the hope that Buhari would continue with his reform agenda.

“We are solidly behind his crusade on corruption, insurgency and every other evil that derailed the progress of this nation.
“We have been praying for his well being and God has answered our prayers,” Usman said.

Alhaji Nura Habu, a local farmer, said the residents would organise prayers to celebrate the return of Buhari.

Mr Chukwu Emeka, a trader, danced on hearing the news, saying he had prayed fervently for the president’s recovery and return.

Emeka who has lived in Daura for over 20 years with his family, said God has put to shame those wishing to see the president dead.

Malam Musa Zango, an Imam, attributed the return of the president to God, “because of Buhari’s good intention to the nation.”

The All Progressives Congress APC has welcomed President Muhammadu Buhari back to the country after his medical vacation to the United Kingdom, expressing greater commitment to the execution of its electioneering campaign promises.

Zimbabwe has declared President Robert Mugabe’s birthday on February 21 a national holiday, a state daily reported Saturday, honouring the veteran politician in power since 1980 who opponents accuse of brutal repression and devastating the economy.


The declaration of the Robert Mugabe National Youth Day came after lobbying by the ruling ZANU-PF party’s youth league.

“In declaring this day, we would like to highlight to our youths the values and principles so brilliantly displayed by President R.G. Mugabe which have resulted in an exemplary life that our youths can emulate,” state-owned Herald newspaper quoted home affairs minister Ignatius Chombo as saying.

He said the cabinet made the decision after years of lobbying by the ruling party which also said it wants the country’s main airport named after Mugabe.

Last week the cash-strapped government announced plans to build a $1 billion Robert Mugabe university, joining several other facilities named after him including the government’s school of intelligence, a main street in the capital Harare and the highway to his rural home.

Mugabe, now 93 years old, first came to power after Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain. He says he plans to contest elections due next year despite his advanced age and concerns over his frail health.

Zimbabwe’s economy has been run down, with output halved since 2000, while many basic services have collapsed and government salaries use up more than 90 percent of all public revenue.

Opposition parties are in talks to try to unite and field one candidate to oppose Mugabe in the next presidential poll.
Past elections however have been tainted by violence and intimidation by ZANU-PF operatives.
