Members of the armed forces ousted the Burkinabe government on Sunday, accusing it of failure in the fight against terrorism. For months a rebellion had been brewing in the army that was supported by many civilians, with anti-government protests in several cities often banned and dispersed by anti-riot police.
Anger over the deteriorating security situation and the government's inability to stem the jihadist violence boiled over on Sunday, with several rebellions erupting across the west African country. Mutinous soldiers demanded the resignation of army leaders and greater resources for the fight against jihadists while protesters set fire to the ruling party’s headquarters in the capital Ouagadougou.
The government announced a curfew on Sunday and uncertainty remained around the fate of President Roch Koboré, who is believed to have been detained by members of the military. In power since 2015, he was re-elected in 2020 on a pledge to make the fight against jihadists a priority. Kaboré had vowed to put an end to “dysfunction” in the army after a series of attacks on security forces and to introduce anti-corruption measures.
But the north and east of Burkina Faso, in the volatile region near Niger and Mali, remain prone to terrorist attacks by Nusrat al-Islam (an off-shoot of al Qaeda) and the Islamic State group in the Greater Sahara.
Between 2015 and 2018, terrorist attacks targeted the capital Ouagadougou and other centres of power. Since 2019, attacks by mobile combat units targeted mostly rural zones in the north and east of the country, fuelling displacements en masse and intercommunal violence. Some 2,000 people were killed, among them civilians and members of the armed forces or the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland, a civilian auxiliary group of the army created in 2020.
Islamist militants now move freely across entire swaths of the country and have forced inhabitants of some regions to conform to a strict version of Islamic law. Meanwhile, the army’s continuing fight against the Islamists has depleted the country’s already meagre resources. A timeline of jihadist violence in Burkina Faso
- On January 15, 2016, 30 people were killed in a double terrorist attack perpetrated by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb on the Splendid Hotel and the Cappuccino restaurant in Ouagadougou. Many of the victims were Western expatriates.
- On March 2, 2018, eight deaths among the security forces were reported after attacks targeting the French embassy and the Burkinabe Armed Forces.
- On January 1, 2019, the Fulani ethnic group, accused of collaborating with jihadist groups, was targeted by the Mossi, another ethnic group, in an attack that left 72 people dead, according to official estimates. Another 6,000 were forced to flee.
- On August 19, 2019, 24 soldiers were killed in an attack on an army base in Koutougou in the north of the country. The army was targeted again in December in a new attack by heavily armed jihadists on and around Arabinda, a city near the border with Mali.
- On January 25, 2020, 39 civilians were massacred in the village market of Silgadji in the north of the country. Around 40 civilians were killed the week before in villages close to Nagraogo and Alamou.
- From March to June 2021, a series of mutinies shook the Burkinabe capital: 566 soldiers were decommissioned and a new army chief was nominated by the president.
- On June 5, 2021, at least 160 people were killed in a new massacre. Many victims were members of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland army auxiliary group.
- On November 14, 2021, 57 people were killed in an attack on the police station in Inata, 54 of whom were police officers. They had alerted authorities about a lack of resources two weeks before the attack.
- On December 10, 2021, Lassina Zerbo was nominated prime minister after the resignation of his predecessor following criticism that he had been incapable of stopping terrorist violence.
- On January 11, 2022, eight soldiers accused of planning “a project to destabilise the institutions of the republic” were arrested.

Founder of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo has accused Nigeria's former President, Olusegun Obasanjo of supporting the agitations of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Dokubo made the allegation during a Facebook live video on Wednesday, adding that some Yoruba leaders are taking sides with the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu and encouraging the destruction of the South-east.
He said while IPOB was violent and burning down the southeastern region, those agitating for Yoruba Nation, as championed by Sunday Igboho are peaceful.
He further charged IPOB members and their supporters to take a cue from Igboho, who has never ordered the killing of anybody — allegedly unlike now-detained Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, he said.
Igboho is also being detained in Benin Republic by the government of the West African country after he was arrested at Cotonou airport, while trying to travel to Germany.
“You come out and kill our people, and people are supporting you, and you are happy,” he said.
He continued, “Sunday Igboho never commanded anybody to be killed. Look at how the Yorubas are fooling you: those elderly buffoons and fools. Mischief-makers fooling you to destroy Igboland.”
He added: “Why are they not disturbing Lagos because of Sunday Igboho (who is being detained)? They are saying ‘IPOB is the best thing’, ‘Nnamdi Kanu is the saviour, who then is Sunday Igboho?’
Accusing some Yoruba leaders of supporting Kanu, he said, “God (will) punish them and throw them into the pit of hell. They are urging you, fooling people to destroy our land. Sunday Igboho is there, they are not destroying Lagos, Osogbo, and Ibadan, but they are telling you to destroy Igboland and you are happy destroying our land.”
He also hurled some unprintable insults at Obasanjo for allegedly supporting Kanu.
“I am an Igbo man, I've never denied and I will continue to be. You are not more Igbo than me, so stop this nonsense.
“I will chase you everywhere, every corner of the way and bring you to book and I'm doing it. I don't just talk, my mouth and hand and leg work together. I told you I will destroy IPOB, all the best of IPOB are with me. Those other people will come and join me too because they know I stand on the platform of truth.”
Dokubo's outburst comes as a rumour circulated the social media quoting Obasanjo to have said, “With what I saw at UK Parliament, I can boldly say that Nnamdi Kanu has gotten Biafra.”
It was posted on Tuesday by Daily Times Nigeria on their verified Facebook page with a picture of Obasanjo attached. However, this piece of information cannot be confirmed.
The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested five suspects on allegations of cannibalism.
The suspects, were on Tuesday, arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court in Gusau, the State capital.
The Police Prosecutor, Jaafar Muhammad informed the presiding Magistrate, Sa’adu Garba Gurbin, said the police had submitted their findings to the Director of Public Prosecution, (DPP) of the State Ministry of Justice, on 31st January, 2022.
He said the Magistrate Court had no jurisdiction in the case. He said the police further submitted the outcome of their investigation to the DPP for reassignment of the case to a court of competent jurisdiction for proper prosecution.
In the ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Sa’adu Gurbin, said the court had no jurisdiction.
He remanded the accused persons to the correctional centre, while the minor among them was sent to a remand home.
The case was adjourned to 15th March, 2022 for further mention.
One of the family members of the butchered late Ahmad, Sadiya Abdurahman Hafizi, could not control her emotions as she kept shouting in the court, demanding justice.
Last month, the Zamfara State Police Command arraigned the five suspects before the Chief Magistrate Court in Gusau, the state capital for Criminal Conspiracy, culpable homicide and cannibalism.
The suspects were charged for killing nine-year-old Ahmad Yakubu and for eating some parts of his body organs, such as intestine, eyes and throat.
The Kaduna State branch of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), the umbrella body for herders in Nigeria, has called for help over the alleged killing of their members and cattle.
The group called on the government and security agencies to come to their aid, alleging that Atyap youths in Southern Kaduna have been killing them and their cattle in what it described as coordinated attacks, Vanguard reports.
Atyap people are an ethnic group predominantly found in Zangon-Kataf, Kaura and Jema'a local government areas of Christian dominated Southern Kaduna.
Chairman of MACBAN in the state, Alhaji Haruna Usman Tugga, in a statement, said attacks against herders have been going on unchecked in Zango–Kataf Atyap (Kataf) Chiefdom.
“However, that does not mean that there are no incidents and reports of various inhumanities deployed against our people are not happening in other sections of Southern Kaduna,” he added.
“Sadly, from the middle of last year to the present day, those working against peace began to ignite violent atrocities on the Fulani Pastoralists, which has now led to the death of many people, particularly in Atyap (Kataf) Chiefdom of Zango-Kataf and Kagoro Chiefdom of Kaura local government areas.”
Describing the said attacks as premeditated and coordinated, Tugga identified them as the source of violence in the area.
Citing examples of such attacks, Tugga said, “On 24th of January, 2022, at Kizaga Village in Kauru Local Government Area, two (2) Fulani herders were attacked by some armed Kataf youth from Kurmin-Masara village of Zango-Kataf Local Government Area.
“They were killed instantly and one was beheaded in the person of (Ya’u Abubakar - 20 years old) while the remains of Adamu Usman Thirty (30 years old) were later found within the area. They also advanced to the houses of the Fulanis and burnt down several houses to ashes while also killing a one-year-old baby boy (Bilal Bukar) who was in one of the burnt houses.
“On 29th January, 2022, in Gankon village of Gora District, armed Atyap (Kataf) youths attacked a 19-year-old boy, Zakari Laulo, who was rearing his cows and lynched him to death.
“On 22nd January, 2022, 8 cows of Alhaji Momarwa died after drinking poisoned water in the village of Zunuruk in Jema’a Local Government Area respectively. On the 25th January, 2022, a young and innocent Aminu Dahiru was attacked and killed instantly in the same village of Zunuruk. After killing him, they attacked 41 cows.
“On the same 25th January, the Kagoro youths advanced forward to attack two innocent youths, Abubakar Musa and Adamu Para were severely injured and were treated at Kafanchan General Hospital.
“Primitively, on 31st January, 2022, one Aminu Ahmad, a young family man went to supervise his cattle on the hills of Kagoro but went missing within the axis of Tson-Jei and Kukum Gida in Kagoro Chiefdom.
“On 1st February, 2022, 16 cows belonging to Alhaji Momarwa were shot dead at Tson-jei village by the same Kagoro youths. The whereabouts of 22 cows are yet to be known. On 2nd February, 2022, twelve (12) cows were discovered killed in the village of Tson-jei belonging to Alhaji Momarwa.”
He, however, appealed to fellow herders to be calm and law-abiding and called on “Kaduna State Government and security agencies to rise up to their constitutional responsibilities by investigating and fishing out the perpetrators of these crimes against the citizens.”
Earlier, during a press conference, Chairman of the Atyap Community Development Association, Daniel Achie, said Fulani terrorists were responsible for the violence being witnessed on Atyap land.
Achie also called on security forces to find those killing his people and bring them to justice.
He said, “The unfortunate thing is that at any time there is a peace meeting with either government officials, representatives of Fulani organisations or the NGOs to try and advance the peace process, the next will be an attack on the land by the Fulani terrorist militias, who subsequently vanish without any trace of their whereabouts.
“The ability of the attacking terrorists to disappear without trace appears surprising. We call on the security forces to step up and show commitment to ending the killings, to protect the lives and properties of the citizens.
“Members of the Press would recall that it was in this hall I categorically stated that we are better up staying peacefully together than fighting and killing ourselves over ancestral heritage. Hence the escalating violence against the Atyap communities continues to beat human imagination.
“With the deliberate perpetuation of violence against the Atyap Chiefdom and communities in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State, the lives of citizens have been reduced to nothing in the land, and the lives and properties of our people are being obliterated at will by those that feel they are protected and can do whatever they want with human lives and go free.”
Also listing the attacks on his people, Achie said, “After my last Press Release and update on the happenings in Atyap land on 17/07/2021, many lives and innumerable properties have been destroyed in villages like Abuyab, Mazaki, Mawakili, Takjei, Matache, Matagama, Gora Gan, Kurmin Masara and Atisa.
“On Sunday 30th January 2022, 11 people were brutally murdered by Fulani terrorist militia forces, many were wounded, over 30 houses burned and over 100 people displaced.
“Again, on Monday, 31st January 2022, Atisa village in (Kurmin Masara) was attacked and 5 lives were lost and 8 houses burned down too, even in the presence of the security checkpoints in Bakin Kogi and Ashaawuce, both less than a kilometre from the scene, some people from the area are still missing and unaccounted for.
“This again has aggravated the humanitarian crisis in the land, thereby making life unbearable to the peace-loving citizens of Atyap land.”
Achie said the “entire Atyap nation has resolved that not an inch of our land will be taken for whatsoever purpose by the enemies of peace and good neighbourliness in our community.”
“From what is transpiring, it has become obvious that the Fulani Terrorist Militias Forces and their sponsors feel they can take over Atyap despite the presence of government,” he added.
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has tackled Vice President Yemi Osinbajo over his alleged presidential ambition.
Reports had it that Osinbajo would declare his intentions to run for the Presidency after the All Progressives Congress, APC, National Convention.
But, the Vice President, through his Media Aide, Laolu Akande, denied such claims.
Reacting, MURIC informed Osinbajo that it was the turn of Muslims in the South West to rule Nigeria and not Christians.
MURIC’s Director, Ishaq Akintola, explained that three Yoruba Christians have occupied the presidency, but no single Yoruba Muslim has been either military Head of State, President or Vice President.
In a statement he signed and forwarded to DAILY POST, Akintola noted that this factor has given Yoruba Christians both political and economic edges and subjected Yoruba Muslims to political marginalisation, social segregation and gross economic disadvantage leading to abject penury among Muslims in the sub-region.
The statement reads: “The Nigerian Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has denied planning to declare his presidential ambition. The Vice President spoke through his spokesman, Laolu Akande today, Monday, 7th February, 2022.
“Nonetheless (the denial notwithstanding), we will like the Vice President to know that it is not his turn yet. Neither is it the turn of any other Christian from the South West. This is because three Yoruba Christians (Obasanjo, Shonekan and Osinbajo himself) have occupied the presidency whereas no single Yoruba Muslim has been either military head of state, president or vice president of Nigeria.
“This factor has given Yoruba Christians both political and economic edges and subjected Yoruba Muslims to political marginalisation, social segregation and gross economic disadvantage leading to abject penury among Muslims in the sub-region.
“Muslims in the South West will no longer remain onlookers in matters affecting our welfare and our collective destiny. Any Yoruba Christian or Muslim candidate seeking office will have to consult the Muslim community. Nobody will be allowed to take Muslims for a ride and get elected on a platter of gold.
“All other things being equal, we would not have worried at all and we would not have brought the religious factor to the fore in Nigeria’s march towards 2023. But the brazen effrontery and undisguised persecution of Yoruba Muslims coupled with the criminal silence from those that matter among Christian leaders, civil society and Yoruba socio-cultural groups have made our stand necessary. Our stand is informed by an urgent need to liberate Yoruba Muslims from the shackles of religious persecution.
“The last time we checked, the Vice President has not deemed it necessary to check the excesses of his fellow Yoruba Christians who are oppressing Yoruba Muslim women in government offices and persecuting female Muslim students in South West schools. Neither has he uttered a single word of condemnation or sympathy on the matter. What then will be the fate of Yoruba Muslims when Osinbajo becomes the president of Nigeria. Christians in the South West will garner more courage. They will out-herod Herod and for Muslims, it will be from the frying pan into the fire.
“Even Profesor Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo cannot claim that he is unaware of the sufferings of Muslim women and female Muslim students in the South West whose conditions can be compared to that of blacks in apartheid South Africa. Perhaps his silence can be due to his position as a pastor of the Redeemed Church whose declared objective is to plant churches within a few meters of each other throughout Nigeria. The starting point may be the forced conversion of Muslim students in Yorubaland. This of course will not be a new development in the sub-region. It happened to our parents and grandparents.
“We urge the Vice President to come out openly and put an end to the state of confusion. For the avoidance of doubts, we have nothing personal against Vice President Osinbajo. In actual fact, we are among his secret admirers and this can be traced to his loyalty to the President Muhammadu Buhari particularly because of the way he stood by the latter in his trying times.
“It would have been a horse of another colour if no Yoruba Muslim has shown any interest in the presidency come 2023. But fortunately the crème de la crème among Yoruba Muslim politicians have indicated interest. Vice President Osinbajo is, therefore, advised to allow sleeping dogs to lie.”
Terrorists and other criminals are closing in on Kaduna metropolis amid increasing attacks and abductions in towns and villages close to the state capital, Daily Trust reports.
Hundreds of people who left their homes in far-flung areas due to persistent attacks by the terrorists popularly called bandits or kidnappers in search of peace in communities near Kaduna metropolis told our correspondent that the attackers have continued to trail them.
Many villages and homes have been attacked and people abducted in recent times, thereby heightening fears that the miscreants are becoming more daring.
Security sources said the terrorists were in disarray because of sustained military operations around their hideouts in forests, hence their movement to communities near Kaduna and other major towns to evade arrest and at the same time continue with their nefarious activities.
For almost a decade, several communities in Kaduna Central Senatorial District have been sacked; with residents fleeing their homes due to banditry.
Daily Trust further reports that since 2013, when the Emir of Birnin Gwari, Alhaji Zubairu Jibril II, raised the alarm about bandits taking over his emirate, the activities of the criminal gangs have escalated to Chikun, Igabi, Giwa and now Zaria LGAs of the state.
Weeks of findings and monitoring showed that in the last few months criminality is gradually surging into parts of Kaduna metropolis and other cosmopolitan areas like Zaria City, Birnin Gwari and Giwa towns which in the past provided refuge for residents fleeing the hinterlands.
Kaduna residents who spoke to our reporter expressed fear that communities near Kaduna metropolis such as Narayi Layout, Rigachikun, Rigasa, Barakallahu, Gbagi Villa, Maraban Rido and Sabo, which are less than five kilometres from the city centre, were now witnessing attacks.
Kaduna metropolis, which comprises Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Igabi and Chikun LGAs, which also forms part of the Central Senatorial District, has since October 2021, been designated Kaduna Capital Territory (KCT), with a landmass of 2,231.41 square kilometres.
However, security sources confirmed to Daily Trust that a few weeks ago the police thwarted a kidnapping attempt in Kawo New Extension located in the heart of the metropolis.
One of the sources told Daily Trust that gunmen had rounded up members of a household but that their plan was thwarted when policemen engaged them and recovered an AK-47 rifle.
Speaking on the surge of the attacks within Kaduna metropolis and major towns, Dr Awwal Abdullahi Aliyu, a security analyst, said this was an indication that everyone was in danger.
Dr Aliyu said it had become obvious that the terrorists had now found courage to advance into major cities, including Kaduna metropolis.
He further said, “The bandits have now been declared terrorists, and a terrorist is ready to take all kinds of risks to achieve his aim.
“They have succeeded in creating fear among the people and are forcing people to leave the outskirts and to all converge in one place.
“This is sending a dangerous signal. Some of them now live among the people to get information, so the security agents must come up with a different approach.”
He, therefore, called on the state government, security agents and residents to come up with community intelligence and security networks and synergise for early warning.
A recent security report released by the Kaduna State Government showed that 1,192 people were killed due to banditry and other security challenges, with 3,348 abducted in 2021.
Out of these numbers, 720 persons were killed in the Central Senatorial District, while 2,771 were abducted from the same district.
We are not safe – Residents
Alhaji Sambo Ali, a resident of Giwa LGA, one of the frontline areas of banditry in the state, told Daily Trust that many villagers had relocated to bigger towns in the area, warning however that the towns were less than five kilometres from the deserted communities.
Alhaji Sambo said, “Rofayya, Karofi, Batoro I and II and Marke I and II have been taken over by the bandits, and these communities are just two kilometres from Fatika town where we are now settled.
“Right now, there are no houses for rent in Giwa town because villagers have converged there.
“Just recently, about two kilometres from Giwa town, bandits blocked the Zaria-Gusau road and conducted operations for three consecutive days.”
Zaria residents agitated
In Zaria, Daily Trust gathered that due to its proximity with forests that traverse Birnin Gwari and Giwa, residents of communities around Dutsen Abba Ward are converging around Kofan Kuyambana, Kofan Gayan and Kofan Kona.
A source in Zaria, however, said even at that there had been a surge in attacks around Kofan Gayan and Kofan Kona.
Kajuru locals relocate to Maraban Kajuru, others
Also speaking with our correspondent, Ben Achana, who fled Buda community in Kajuru LGA, said residents of Kajuru, Gyangere and Buda had equally moved to bigger towns such as Maraban Kajuru, Kasuwan Magani and Kufana.
In Chikun LGA, our correspondent gathered that residents of Unguwan Gimbiya, Juji, Unguwan Bagi, Maraban Rido and Unguwan Kaje are moving into Kaduna metropolis to find refuge.
Mr Achana said even as they had migrated into the metropolis and other bigger towns, the bandits appeared to be encroaching into such towns.
He said, “We have moved to bigger towns, but these towns are less than three to four kilometres from the communities we fled from, which the bandits have taken over. We fear that this is giving the bandits the opportunity to re-strategise and attack the bigger towns.”
We’ll protect the state – Kaduna gov’t, Police
When contacted, the Kaduna State Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said the government was not sleeping. He said they were working very hard to tackle all issues of insecurity in the state.
The Kaduna State Police Command on its part aligned with this report on the advancement of the criminal gangs into the metropolis but said security agents were strategising to address the situation.
Speaking with Daily Trust, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Mohammed Jalige, confirmed the incident in Kawo New Extension where gunmen attempted to round up members of a household but said the gunmen fled due to the superior firepower of security agents.
ASP Jalige explained that the Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Mudasiru, had directed all DPOs and tactical commanders within the metro and Kakuri area to improve their patrols and visibility at night while they gathered surveillance in the afternoon.
He further explained: “The directive is to gather more intelligence and to liaise with traditional rulers and other stakeholders to get the necessary information in the daytime.
“The tactical commanders will mount stop-and-search roadblocks within the metropolitan areas at night because security analysis shows that attacks in the metropolis are linked to the work of informants or bandits infiltrating the areas in the afternoon for surveillance before they strike.

A data consulting agency, Statisense has revealed that out of every 100 poor people in Nigeria, 76 are from the Northern region while the Southern states have 24, according to a report issued on Thursday.
Statisense, however, disclosed on its Twitter page that most unemployed Nigerians are found in the Southern part of Nigeria.
In the figures released based on six geo-political zones, for every one hundred poor Nigerian citizens, 40 live in the North-West, 19 live in the North-East, 17 live in the North-Central, 11 live in the South-East, 8 live in the South-South and 5 live in the South-West.
It added that most poor people in Northern Nigeria were found in Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Sokoto, Bauchi, Niger and Kaduna states in that order of occurrence.
While analysing the data further, the report states that for every 100 poor Nigerians, 9 live in Kano, 6 live each in Jigawa, Katsina and Sokoto states, while 5 live each in Bauchi, Niger and Kaduna states.
Also, 4 live each in Zamfara and Adamawa states, while 3 live each in Taraba, Enugu, Yobe, Plateau, Ebonyi, Kebbi and Gombe states.
The data agency, however, revealed that the most unemployed citizens of the country are found in Lagos, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Kaduna, Imo, Cross River and Anambra states in their order of prevalence.
Analysing employment ratio in the country, it said for every 100 fully employed people in Nigeria, 33 live in South-West, 17 live in North-Central, 17 also live in North-West, 16 live in South-South, 10 live in South-East and 7 live in North-East.
In total, there are 59 employed people in Southern Nigeria and 41 in the North from every 100 fully employed Nigerians.
