obstead200:
A very big congrats to u. Please I also need the number of the person who designed ur cages. kindly send me a mail at obstead2003@yahoo.com or 08036269893

Also, please how many feet wide is your pen? I notice u want to place two rows of cages.

I am also building a poultry in the south east and am aiming to do eggs too. My pen is 23ft wide. I think it will be about 6ft high at the lowest points. I hope it is ok?
I will make out time to take Pictures of my ongoing construction project and post it here for accessment.
I am yet to roof the building sha and I think I am glad to learn that asbestors or aluminum is better cos I was planning to use zinc. what is the price per sheet of asbestors please? will aluminum be ok as an alternative?

you see, I really dont know my left from my right in this poultry biz. I just observe what I can see in other farms and then replicate it in my own site. I however intend to undergo training before starting.

pls do send me the contact details of the cage provider.
You can reach the cage man on 08029562263 or 08063101354.

Our pen is 120ft by 30ft to accomodate 17units of double row (making a total of 34 units) housing 3,264 birds.

Because you must allow space in between rows and between the cage row and pen wall, not sure your width wont be too tight to take two rows.

There are two sizes of the abestors, we used the large and its N1,800/unit, 194 units was used.

Hello House, just to provide update on our expected 3,000 layers.
Again we couldn't get it done today. The challenge has been the availability of moving crates. Now we have scured some crates on rent and should effect the movements latest by Friday morning.
My concern really is that the birds should be moved before they are 17weeks old. Some literature I read states that it's not good for layers to be moved after they are 17weeks. This is because this is a critical period when the birds attain sexual maturity and stree could interfere with this natural process.

You sort to avoid intimadation/canibalism among the birds (In the same cell). You also sort to give the smaller ones room to feed and catch up with the bigger bird.
Thanks for the clarification. The "how" & reason for sorting is now clear.

Oga update the house.

Did you receive the birds today? What is their age and the average weight?.
I really must appreciate the pieces of advice I have received from everyone.
The birds didn't arrive today as scheduled due to some logistics challenge. We have reschedule for Wednesday (by God's grace). Thanks.

The birds wld b 16wks 4days old on arrival.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

davidzfarm18:
Congrats
as per above.
1, You need a good brooding house.
2, You need an experience hand becos you are starting big with 3000 birds
3. If your farm is in the North. ur pen is too short. the higher the better to avoid heat shock from affecting birds at the top cage.
Many thanks @davidzfarm18.

We hv the brooding pen in our plan (next cycle to be raised from DOC)
Our farm is in the south-west, however I take note of your point about the height of the pen.
I have been suported by a mentor (he has provided guidance, contacts, networks all the way), he is standing by us.

Is there any specific thing we need to do pertaining to the arrival of the pullet?
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 10:04pm On Apr 18, 2015
We have ordered. 3,000 POL pullets, expected to arrive next monday. Borehole has been drilled with overhead tank in place.

Two staff were hired since the beginning of April undergoing mini-training in a bigger operational farm nearby.

Please dear seniors, feel free to critique my story so far but more importantly, whatare the necessary things we need to do towards receiving the pullets on Monday.

Your advice remains invaluable & would be appreciated.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 9:29pm On Apr 18, 2015
We arranged for 34 units of locally fabricated cages. These are 96-bird capacity cages. Our "fabricator did a good job (in my assessment) and was through in 3 weeks 2 days.

Still on the over strong floor

AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 9:09pm On Apr 18, 2015
The floor was done in a full day.

Challenges with the omo-onile as usual to collect one levy or the other. The concrete mixer broke down, rain came down ......, but we remain undaunted.

AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 9:02pm On Apr 18, 2015
The poultry pen is a 120ft by 30ft, planned to house about 3,000 layers.

The poultry costs is around N2m ( I think its on the high side), but its all a learning process! We could have been efficient in the use of resources. The pen was built using metal poles (not the usual wood), granite (not gravel as commonly done), we used a concrete mixer, etc.

The pen would be more durable, but cost?

AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 8:52pm On Apr 18, 2015
The story continues ..........

The land is for our "trial farm" as our mission is to develop into "technology-driven integrated farm". its a one acre land.

We started developing a poultry farm.

Hello Great Farmers,

I started following this thread early this year and has learnt a lot! Also drawn inspiration to pursue something I have always wanted to do.

I would tell my story so far in pics.

Acquisition and clearing of land. it was really more of a forest.

Hi Kevin96

Thanks for the info.
But are you sure about this values because i am currently drawing out a business plan and i have over double that figure i.e from DOC to POL (20 weeks estimation), N1,172,600.00
Does this N1.7m include acquisition of land, building of pen and other fixed assets.

If so, the this is no longer just the cost of raising from DOC to POL.
AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 1:32pm On Feb 19, 2015
Hello House,

I'm about to commence the construction of a poultry pen (our 1st) a 30ft*120ft to house about 3,200 birds.

The total cost required, as provided by the carpenter & bricklayer, is about N1.9m.

Please how fair is this?

Eggcelent:
segun1976. I saw this relevant advert as per your request for "gift" crates:
TOFGLOBAL CONCEPT LTD.
38A Adeniji Str., Abisogun Leigh Estate, beside AY Hotel, Ogba GRA, Lagos.
07080541159, 08023081596

Meanwhile, I used to buy similar crates at #80 each from a vet store at Akure, Ondo State.
I suspect you can get them at cheaper prices from the above. Success
@Eggcellent, thanks for this useful info. Would work on it and provide necessary & usefull feedback.

obnelly:
Next time when you observe any wound or abnormal behaviour remove the bird and provide first aid
treatment.
By attending or visiting your farm on daily bases supervising your staff work will curtail them from killing your bird.tell your staff the total number of birds in the pen.if any one is missing tell them you will deduct it from their salary. Any mortality must be examined and recorded.if your morality chart is going up then your staff are playing over you the same thing is applicable to eggs proper recording will give you what is going on in your farm.
Pay good salary to your worker
@Obnelly, i quite agree with your above stated controls. It could go a long way in checking pilfering on our farms.

However what do you consider "good salary"? that would temper the greed and fraudulent minds of some of these Staff.

LSA:
In this post, i would be posting pictures of femsal farms and also answer questions with regards to setting up a farm. I have always loved agriculture but the knowledge i have today was learnt during the course of setting up.

We deal in egg production, broiler production and catfish production
@LSA, so how is FEMSAL doing?

Starting up something like this. At the phase of site clearing, would be nice to learn from your experience during the initial setup.
Thanks for sharing with us all.

FarmTech:
..
The plastic crates usually lead to more egg breakage.
@Farmtech the crates I refer to is the one used to package for egg sale in supermarkets.

I buy eggs at big malls packaged in 6, 12 or 30 pieces and they are not broken. it gives your egg product branding and maybe you can charge a little biit more.

Sorry the price of parent stocks are different from those that one need to fattern & sell.

Mostly the male goats are bigger that the female so if you just want to buy , fattern & sell then buy all male .....N7k each

But the female good parent stocks goes for N10k each .

For ram the male goes for 15k while the female parent stock goes for N20 - N25, depending on quantity need.
I am going to be offline for the weekend soif you need me give me a call on 08136650972
Have a lovely weekend, until monday.
Please I need to buy some young rams to raise in my farm towards Ileya in September. Heard it cheaper and better if you buy from the north at this time.
However before I proceed on my plan, I need a few clarifications from the experts in the house;
1. Is 6 months enough to raise these young rams into the size that is usually in high demand during the festive season?
2. If yes, what type of feed is required to achieve this?
3. What is the average price that the appropriate age, weight) young ram can be bought?
4. With good management what level of price could the final product (Ileya ram) be sold for in September?

Would appreciate someone would provide practical answers.

AgricultureRe: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by segun1976: 9:37pm On Feb 03, 2015
Hello good people,

Someone should help clarify whether 'extra' pieces are also added when you buy POL from breeder farms.

Placed an order for 3,000 units and want to be fully prepared for the exact quantity I would be receiving.
Cheers

@laposta

Many thanks for the shared info.

I would try to utilise these info in my farm layout and subsequent construction.

I had thought that a 40ft by 120ft pen would accomodate 5,000 layers but from what you gave this might not be possible.
