i will like to use this medium to announce to you guys of the annual Ngerian Soceity of Biochemistry Students (NSBS) National Convention @UNIPORT, which holds from the 7th-9th or October, 2014. This a medium where all nigerian biochemists, "great eminents and great metabolites" converge to discuss national issues concerning our department, its welfare and progress. You'l get to meet different calibre of people, students, professors and alumni. Our national election will still hold there and then. Accomodation is free. But transport, feeding and registration are personally sponsored. I will like to meet nairalanders there. Thanks in anticipation.

lolz!... Its usually more difficult to get a first in biochemistry than in most other courses in science. Leave distractions such as women, politics, and cultism. With God u'll definitely make it.

Feyol56: thnx 4 dz info bro,plz wat's d diff btw med biochemistry and ordinary biochemistry, can a medical biochemist work in all dis place u'v mentioned huh And plz wat z d full meaning of m.sc ?
medical biochemistry is one of the branches of biochemistry, just like the applied biochemistry, pharmaceutical biochemistry, food biochemistry, nutritional biochemistry, industrial biochemistry, biotechnology, e.t.c. These are few examples of the branches of biochemistry. Some schools offer one of the branches, like delsu offers medical biochem, unizik offers applied biochem, and the list goes on.but my school does it general, as general biochemistry, nai make the course dey hard for UNN.

The M.Sc simply means "Master of Science". Its just another degree after the first degree, which is B.Sc...(Bachelor of Science). Thanks bro.

zleemshaddy: tenkz alot . . .lyk where can 1 worj afta graduation?
good question. The truth is that, everyone in Nigeria sees education as means of gettin a better livelihood, but dat orientation has really changed our mentality towards education.
Anyways, biochemistry is a very verstile course, not just being versatile, but very lucrative. There many job opportunities that await biochemists, but one romantic truth is dat, u need to get an M.sc to have a higher rate of employability. But that not withstanding, u can get a very good job wif ur degree alone.

You can work in the hospital as a laboratory supervisor, a laboratory technician, as a biochemist and even as consultant (but wif an added degree). You can work in different kinds of companies, like in textile, cosmetic, plastic, food industries, and in pharmaceutical companies. You can work in chemical manufacturin firms as well,You can work in agricultural firms, even in research institutes. You can as well work in colleges and universities, and in health and agricultural ministries.
Bro, the list is endless, these are the ones i can say for now!

zleemshaddy: hi,am henry tenkz alot abt d info of biochemistry,, pls am an aspirant for this course bt i hve been told nt to go for this course, please i need more info, lyk hw many years it is studied in d uni, afta graduation possible place of working, scores to get in jamb n post jamb, i just left secondary school and i would lyk to study this course, tell me yur challenges as a student. . . God bless u
wow! I'm happy too. I like ur aspirations. There are so many answers to provide, but i'll start by telling u the requirements for admission into my school.
The "average" score for biochemistry is usually between the range of 230-250, dependin on relative general performance of students. And when i say average, i mean the average of ur jamb and post ume scores, so it doesn't really matter which is higher, as long as ur jamb is above 200 (as usual) and ur post ume score is above 180. But students are usually adviced to get high scores in jamb, so that it will boost ur chances of gettin a very high average, gettin high scores in UNN post ume aint easy at all, not that it's impossible. Biochemistry is studied for 4years in my school, thou some schools, even in Nigeria study it for 5 years.

i am just letting you know that it's not that black & white like you are making it. no man wakes up in the morning with the hope of beating his woman. majority of the time, men are provoked into resorting to violence.

theoretically, it does.....
but it's a far cry from reality. a man suddenly gets slapped in a commercial by a woman over a small issue. what do you think his instinct would be? defend himself of your signature? cheesy grin

5minsmadness: My former neighbors in Lagos were like this. The woman would be heard early in the morning berating the man and screaming for him to leave pocket money. Sometimes the man will come out of the house with his shirt rumpled and torn and the woman holding unto his trouser which she has made attempt to remove many times in public. The shouting would go something like this:

"Leave me oh, leave me oh, if I lay my hands on you!!"

"Try it! Try it and let me see! Useless man! When people are counting husband you will go and join! Touch me and see what will happen, your mates are riding jeep you are still jumping molue! They say common sense is not common! If you move another step I will naked you here!"

"But honey(he starts to beg with style) I am late for work if I lose my job even my small salary will be taken from me..."

'I don't care! Go and do what your mates do! If not for that useless thing between your legs would you have been any different from a woman?! Etc etc"

In fact he would have to wait until she let him go or else risk going to work naked.

He must be a real man.
All men should be like that.
hahahaha!... That man must be a martian. Not from this earth.

The man still dey live with dat kind woman? Him need serious help!

5minsmadness: This issue of woman/wife battering is always coming up and always ends with those who have been guilty of such acts being chased away by statements like these:

Next thing the thread ends with hurling insults at abusive men without addressing the issue itself. This one is probably going to end the same way.

Serial battering is bad/evil/lunacy, yes, alright we get it! It would be better if we addressed the issue of what would provoke a previously sane and reasonable man to the extent of him lashing out at the wife, then we would have taken a step forward.
if i may notbe wrong, what i infer from the few sensible posts i've read so far is that, "it myt be very impossibe tryin to stop women from being insultin and abusive, cos its their nature, and there's no much physical harm it myt cause, BUT men should learn how to control their anger and get used to swallowin sh*t from such women, cos their own retaliation myt lead to death"...

What a double standard!
FamilyRe: * Wife Beating And Domestic Violence * by Sepp360(op): 6:02pm On Sep 25, 2014
5minsmadness: Not understanding the reason for the violence in the first place is like pretending the problem does not exist. Look for what provokes the men and curb it and the violence will reduce. We will now know that those who remain are the serial batterers and psychopaths.
very sensible!...

The truth (whether the white man likes it or not) is that some women are just plain stubborn and a well placed and memorable SLAP restores them to default settings faster than 5 long years of fruitless dialogue during which time you would have invested and lost so much physically, financially and emotionally.
hahahaha!... Ur post got me laughing... Taking my time to imagine the conformation of the SLAP.

mentorandfriend: Op, if I was there that day you laid your hand on that girl, I would have dealt with your idiotic head. Guys for whatever reason that exhibit violent acts to women must really be mad. At our estate sometime ago, I met a guy slapping her girlfriend front and back for not picking his calls the previous day. It was a lonely night. Nobody was in sight. The girl was helpless. I weighed up the guy and told him I'd like to have a word with him. I took him to a corner and taught him discipline. I told the girl to go home to her parents. Beating a lady (your girlfriend, wife or even sister) for any reason at all is the highest form of cowardice.

crackhaus: Good question.
A normal child with moderate stubbornness will never do it again, but there's a possibility that he may try it again just to dare.
The difference when this happens is that, the moment you raise your voice and start moving towards him, he'll stop.

________________________
A full grown woman would not want to antagonize her man again especially if the man does not deserve it. Remember, my slap scenario only occurred after there must have been many confrontations where the man walked away.
Clearly, a woman with such an insultive streak knows in her mind that the man had controlled himself so much until he just couldn't anymore.

While we're preaching against physical abuse on women in whatever form or intensity, we should also admonish wives to refrain from antagonizing/pushing their husbands past his emotional threshold...there's only so much a person can take no matter the level of self-control they claim to possess.
It takes just the right amount of built up feelings, anxiety, anger, and the wrong scenario to get anyone to react in a way that even surprises themselves.

PS:
All I've submitted so far does not include men who are serial abusers.
hmmm!... You just said it all!...

crackhaus: I usually step away to put some distance between myself and a woman whose mouth starts running.

The problem however with this method lies in the fact that one can only walk away so many times until they're in a situation where they can't.
What are we to do then?

Take the case of a kid:
You're watching a movie on TV, this kid keeps going to the TV set to tap his hand on the screen.
You have warned him severally never to do that...sometimes you raised your voice and frowned your face, it worked..the child stepped back.
Unfortunately, another day the child does the same thing...but this time around, as he taps the screen, he keeps looking back at you aware that you're only going to raise your voice and frown.
He already expects the usual reaction, and because of the frequency of it, he has gotten quite used to it...hence, raising your voice and frowning doesn't work anymore.
Now one day you have had enough, he repeats the same thing...but this time, instead of just frowning and raising your voice, you get up, walk towards him and place a light slap (sufficient enough to cause pain but not enough to cause injury) on his cheek...you tell him that you have warned him severally to desist and that the slap is meant to teach him obedience.
The boy is stunned!
He is both surprised and hurt, he cries and tries to get you to pet him...but you don't. Today you're willing to listen to his cries. If there's someone else in the house, the kid turns to them to get sympathy since you're not moved.

You have effectively associated tapping the TV screen to receiving a painful slap on the cheek...only a terribly stubborn child would repeat that stuff in your presence another day.

Sorry for the long post, I intended passing a point and I believe I have.
Some ladies are going to critic my post using the old line, "a full grown woman is not a child that should be slapped."
Well, throwing tantrums and insults around is more of a child's behaviour than it is an adults'.

Okay some may not critic it again cos I've said so, but they'll definitely think it.. grin
long, but very meaningful. But let me state another scenario here..

What if the child still gets used to the light slap, that he doesn't desist from offending you?
Family* Wife Beating And Domestic Violence * by Sepp360(op): 9:40am On Sep 24, 2014
If i can remember vividly, there was this girl i had isshh with, i was just 15years then. Actually she was my neighbour, i didnt really like her (sincerely typing), and i don't think i will like her even if we get to meet again by chance. She was so insulting and proud, maybe it's because of her beauty. That fact alone made me dislike her, and i sought for opportunity to teach her some manners. I later found one shaa.
One blessed morning, as i was washing my dad's car, she was also washing her dad's. Mistakenly, i poured soap leather on the side screen of her dad's car. As i expected, she didnt disappoint me. She started raining injurious insults on me, calling me animalistic names. I tried managing the situation, until she said i did it intentionally because my dad's car was inferior to her dad's (lolz), i couldn't bear it any longer. To cut the long story short, i dealt with her that day, i really taught her manners and i still thank God for that day.
After the WWE smackdown, my dad called me into the house and taught me my own lesson. Later that day, he called me in his room and told me a few words that i still can't forget in a hurry. He said, "Women are the most provocative creatures on earth, and it takes huge tolerance and responsibilty to avoid beating them up each time they mess up. If you wanna be a real and responsible man; Don't Beat Women". From that day onwards, i find it very difficult to hit a woman, and it has really saved me my life.

Back to the matter of the day. Domestic violence can take a number of forms including physical, emotional, verbal, economic and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and to violent physical abuse that results in disfigurement or death. The worst of them all is battering, which is the most critical. Recently, i've come to see most men resolve issues concerning women with violence. I don't think its reasonable and rational. Though beating stubborn women might be fun, like the one i experienced 9 years ago; but i still don't think its the best way of resolving relationship conflicts.
It is high time men learnt how to use their high natural wisdom in resolving issues relating to women rather than applying violence on them. That you have the strength doesn't mean you should use it against women. It is unacceptable.

The preponderance of such issues have raised questions like "what really causes domestic violence and wife battering, why should someone beat his wife/mother/sister/girlfriend, how can domestic violence be curbed?" i may not have direct and correct ansers to those questions, unlike some of you that might have, but i think men should come to accept the fact that the ability to tolerate women is one of the greatest features of responsible and real men. Thats for those who chose to be responsible.
