Tukur acknowledges ACN’s drive in S-West on OCTOBER 30, 2012 · in NEWS 12:28 am 0 By DAYO JOHNSON AKURE — THE National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur yesterday said that the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, has constituted itself to a “bone in the flesh of our party in the South West”. Alhaji Tukur said this in a congratulatory letter he personally signed to the governorship candidate of the party in the October 20 election, Chief Olusola Oke and the former governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Agagu. He said: ‘’I am particularly gratified that we were declared second ahead of the ACN, a party that has constituted itself a bone in the flesh of our party in the South West’’. According to him: “Although, we were not declared winner, I am quite happy and proud at the performance of our party despite all odds. This is a testimony to the fact that with dedication, unity and proper fighting spirit, we shall take back all the states that were taken away from us under questionable circumstances”. In the letter, the Chairman said: ‘’I wish to congratulate you, the leadership and the entire members of our great party in Ondo State for good performance in the just concluded governorship election. When Ojukwu moved too fast recklessly in his ostrich strategy, the same Chief Awolowo led a delegation of Western and some Midwestern leaders to Enugu on 6th May, 1967 and pleaded with Ojukwu not to secede, reminding him that the Western Region was not militarily ready to follow suit in view of the weaknesses of the Western Command of the Nigerian Army and the dominant position of the Northern troops in the West. Ojukwu turned a deaf ear to this advice maybe because of his wrong concept”.(p.141) Before a Child will ask for who killed him his father, he must at least be able to handle a matchet or a gun......... |
“Jesus does not do coins” on OCTOBER 28, 2012 · in OUTSIDE LOOKING IN 12:00 am 0 By Denrele Animashaun The British mail newspaper ran a center page about the Winners’ Chapel. The head of the ministries, David Oyedepo, has an estimated £93 million fortune, a fleet of private jets and a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The church has been accused of cynical exploitation with £16.7 million in donations and followers are told that God would give them riches in return. In the Mail revelation, it was revealed that followers are bussed to the church and handed envelopes and their followers encouraged to make debit cards payments. This the ministries say will make them immune from illnesses. The donations to the ministry in England almost doubled from £2.21 million to £4.37 million between 2006 and 2010.Mr Oyedepo’s super church in Nigeria received £794,000 or 73 per cent of the charitable donations paid out by the British Winners’ Chapel between 2007 and 2010. This was despite claims in Africa that he is enriching himself at the expense of his devotees. I have a lot of misgivings, when vulnerable people who go into these places seeking spiritual refuge and absolutions are fleeced. I know of several cases. One that comes to mind is that of a former client who was a victim of a serious crime. She had gone to a church to pray and at the end of the sermon the collection plate came round and she placed a £1 coin into the tray. She had saved the money but the usher was so scathing and she told my client that “Jesus does not do coins”! An old lady gave her last £5 and had to beg at the door for money to buy her electricity. She had felt pressured into handing her money over. Whatever the case, these places prey on the vulnerable and promises everything only to deliver paranoia, penury and pain. Some of these places are nothing but a pyramid scheme only the top tier milks the proceeds while lowest tier remains deluded of spiritual deliverance. This is Chuka Ummuna.“To be wealthy and honoured in an unjust society is a disgrace.”– Confucius I was commuting on a busy Monday morning in London. Transportation is generally a well oiled routine. So I crossed over to the train station, and I noticed a tall, slim and dark gentlemen (well, he really was light skinned) .We both got into the cab of the train. So we took our seats side by side. He acknowledged my presence and realised that it was me (a community leader in my neighbourhood we meet occasionally at joint events). He asked after my son, and then my daughter and we talked for awhile. Then we got into our journey. I know he has a busy day ahead so I buried my face into my free newspaper. After several stop, he was about to get up he smiled and bid me good day and extended his greeting to my family and I, You see, some of my fellow commuters recognised him but did not react. Well, the man who just left the train was none other than Chuka Ummuna, Member of Parliament and Shadow Business Minister. It is quite normal to see our lawmakers and parliamentarians using the public transport and mingling with the rest of the ordinary people. It makes them more accessible and brings them closer to the ordinary person in the street. So when I read that Okorocha’s ADC,Gabriel Onu, was jostling Governor of Anambra’s man for warming up the seat for his boss. Gov Okorocha punches Peter Obi’s aide for denying him seat. You see, the event was in Anambra and the Governor of the state, would be given a place in the front row. But the Imo contingent did not think so. Okorocha’s aides were defiant: “Why is it that anywhere we go, they always reserve a special seat for Obi. Is Okorocha not the leader of Ndigbo?” They did make a scene and what a carry on! Anyway, when Governor Obi arrived to the venue, he squeezed between Onyebuchi and Okorocha. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/10/jesus-does-not-do-coins/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

UNIPORT FOUR: They are demonising Aluu community – Elechi Amadi on OCTOBER 21, 2012 · in JUST HUMAN 2:00 pm 0 By Jimiota Onoyume THE story of the murder of four students of University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) on October 5 at Omuokiri-Aluu community continued, last week, with the parade of thirteen suspects by the police at its headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital. Among those paraded was the paramount ruler of Omuokiri-Aluu community, Alhaji Hassan Walewa. The suspects were later charged alongside others at large at a magistrate court in Port Harcourt on a five-count charge which included conspiracy and murder. The court adjourned the matter to December 20. Magistrate of the court, Emanuel Woke, said his court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the case because of its nature. He directed that the case file be handed over to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice and the accused be remanded in prison custody. The charges were read to them but no plea taken. Meantime, literary icon, Captain Elechi Amadi (rtd), has absolved his Aluu community of complicity in the killing of the four students. Amadi said Aluu is made up of nine clans, adding that the students were murdered in one of the clans nearest to UNIPORT. According to him, the part where the sad incident occurred is inhabited by strangers. He said Aluu community marked that area out for sale to strangers to erect residential buildings and student hostels. Besides the traditional ruler the others arrested by the police, according to him, were strangers. The novelist maintained that the police merely arrested the paramount ruler of Omuokiri-Aluu as part of their routine exercise. He said the media had chosen to demonise indigenes of Aluu over a sad incident they had no hand in Amadi, said the police should go ahead to prosecute any Aluu son or daughter found to have been involved in the brutal murder of the students. Continuing, he said there was no way indigenes of the area could break into the mob to rescue the students, adding that the police got there but did nothing. Excerpts: What is your comment on the killings in Omuokiri-Aluu community? Our press statements are never carried properly. The impact of our message is lost during the translation. What we are saying is that Aluu indigenes were not involved in the killing of the four students. The killings occurred in one of the villages of Aluu. There are nine villages in Aluu. They occurred in the village nearest to the university, in an area allocated to strangers for residential building. No Aluu man was involved. University of Port Harcourt students brutally beaten and burnt alive The only person arrested was the paramount ruler of the village. That was a routine thing. When things like this happen, they ask the paramount ruler where he was when it occurred. But all the others arrested are not Aluu indigenes. What effort did Aluu indigenes make to stop the killings? How could they when it was happening in a part of the town where there are no indigenes. And it was early in the day or thereabouts. But it would not have been possible for Aluu indigenes within the neighbourhood not to be aware of the happenings in this age? But the police were there. So how can an unarmed citizen go to the mob to stop them? The police were there. Infact one of the sisters of the slain students said the police were there and one of them told the mob to deal with them. So there was nothing anybody could do. The natives of Aluu are being demonised. They are making devils of us. It is believed that we killed the students. But we did not. Let the police investigate the matter thoroughly; publish the names of the suspects so that the bereaved parents will know those behind it. But how come Aluu will allocate a portion of its land entirely to strangers with no indigene living in the area? The question you asked shows you are already prejudiced. This is the trouble with the press, they already have a stand. They refuse to look at the other side. It was one of the questions from readers since Aluu came up with the story that none of its indigenes was involved in the killing…? No Aluu indigene lives in that area. They have their compounds in Aluu where they live. So when you sell land it is the person that you sold to that lives there. It so happened that in that portion strangers have been buying and building. No Aluu man lives there. Elechi Amadi What if any Aluu indigene is linked to the killings? He should be dealt with, prosecuted. But the paramount ruler has been arrested in connection with the incident? People just imagine things. How will they parade people to an old man, people he did not know? These are strangers in the place. People just imagine things. You know where the paramount ruler lives? Very far from where it happened. Suspects speak The police allowed three of the suspects to speak to journalists when they paraded them at the police headquarters in Rivers State. Two of them said the police arrived Omuokiri-Aluu community before the murder. One of them, Mr David Chinasa Ugbaje, said he saw two police men when the four students were being beaten, adding that one of them pleaded that the boys should be set free. Continuing, he said the other policeman joined the mob in beating the students. Ugbaje, a cobbler, said the four students were first marched to his compound to confirm their story that they came to see one Bright. But when they got there, Bright’s door was locked. Immediately, according to him, those around started beating them. He said he and other neighbours in the compound had to push the riotous mob out of the compound when it became clear that the mob wanted to lynch them there. His words, “I was arrested as a result of what happened in Aluu. Around 7a.m. on that day, I left my house and went to my workplace. I saw a crowd beating four boys. I asked who the four men being beaten were and they said they were armed robbers. I was told they were going to my compound with the boys so they could point at the particular person who they said they were coming to look for. “So, along the line, we went there, I opened the gate; they entered. I could not control the crowd. They pointed at one of our co-tenants door; the name of the person is Bright. Some people say they would break Bright’s door; but the door was locked. So they started beating the boys very seriously. “Along the line, two police men came around. One of the police was pleading but the other one even joined in beating the boys. At a point, the police said the boys should be handed over to them, but the crowd refused. I now said if they kill these people here, this house will be in trouble. I had to bring out my belt to start flogging people to leave the yard. “They took them out from my street. I now left the house. The two other suspects, Ikechuckwu Louis Amadi and Lawal Segun, in their separate comments, said they saw police men at the scene of the incident. Lawal, a taxi driver, said he was not part of the mob that murdered the students. He alleged that he pleaded with the mob to release them. On his part, Amadi said he saw four police men while the students were being beaten, adding that the angry mob insisted they were not going to release the boys to the policemen. The slain students were Ugona Kelechi Obuzor, a year two geology student, Biringa Chiadika Lordson, year two theatre arts student, Mike Lloyd Toku, year two civil engineering student, and Tekena Erikena. |

Open Letter Of Resignation To Odumegwu Ojukwu FROM Robert S. Goldstein (Public Relations Representative of Biafra in the United States) (Published in the Morning Post, Lagos, August 17, 1968) As your Public Relation's Representative in the United States, it is my distasteful duty to tender my resignation based on the following points: POINT 1 - In November of 1967 when we met in Umuahia, you and your Cabinet were very impressive. You told me of the woes of your little Republic, that thousands of people had died, were dying and more were prepared to die for freedom's sake. You and your Cabinet told me you believed world opinion would help your cause if you could get your story across. You expressed the opinion that very few if any people in the United States knew of the plight of the Biafrans. You asked me to tell the world that Britain had teamed up with Russia in a conspiracy with the Federal Government of Nigeria to murder every Ibo in Biafra. You suggested I use my talents to induce the Press to write about the Biafran side of the war, as at that time all news came out of Lagos. You will recall I did not take the assignment that day but stayed on several days before deciding to take that job to help win the peace At that time I stated to you and your cabinet that I was taking the assignment making it crystal clear I would try my best to help win the peace not the war. POINT TWO - I immediately arranged the first world Press conference in Biafra inviting the US Press as well as journalists and television people from England, France, Switzerland, Africa and other parts of the Globe. This was the first news break through. I arranged regular trips into Biafra for the world Press, helped set up stringers, etc., so that your statements and the statements of your Cabinet would be heard. At that time, I was absolutely positive you were right and your cause was a just one in the best interests of the free world and your countrymen. POINT THREE - Finally the Republic of Biafra was recognized first by Tanzania, then quickly followed by Gabon, the Ivory Coast and Zambia. Our public relations work was paying off, world opinion was starting to side with us. Peace talks were arranged at Kampala. I thought that if anyone walked away from the table it would be the Federal Government. But to my dismay it was Biafra that left the Conference. After all the fighting and killing, I knew that peace would not come easy but I could not understand leaving the Peace Conference until the last point was negotiated and the avenue explored. POINT FOUR - Then urgent telex messages were received from 'Biafra' telling of tens of thousands of people starving in the refugee camps, the villages, the bush country - stating if something weren’t done in the next few months over a million women, children and aged would be starved to death. I immediately contacted the Press, urgently petitioned the State Department for action on their part. Food, medicine and milk were sent to the only available ports open for immediate shipment to 'Biafra' via land routes through Federal and Biafra territory, under the auspices of world organizations such as the International Red Cross among others. Then came the incredible answer from 'Biafra' that land corridors could not be acceptable until there was a complete ceasefire, and that an airlift was the only solution to feed the starving. You then appeared before the various Heads of State and representatives of the OAU at Niamey in Niger. I fully expected you to at least accept the world help that was offered your starving throngs. However, you delayed, hoping to use these unfortunates with world sympathy on their side as a tool to further your ambition to achieve war concessions at the upcoming peace talks in Addis Ababa. Thus innocent victims continue to perish needlessly of starvation, the most agonising death that can befall any living creature. POINT FIVE - This was incredible to me. I am now convinced that I have been used by you and your cabinet to help in military adventures of your origin....using your starving hordes as hostages to negotiate a victory. If at some later date, following the isuance of this letter, you do concede to allow a mercy land corridor...would you expect me to agree to espouse before the world Press the incredible delay of your decision. What explanation could I honestly give for the needless prolongation of this horror. Inconceivable acts I pray this communication may in some small way influence you to move affirmatively, allowing the mercy land corridor to be born. It is inconceivable to me that you would stop the feeding of thousands of your countrymen (under auspicies of world organizations such as the International Red Cross, World Council of Churches and many more) via a land corridor which is the only practical way to bring in food to help at this time. It is inconcivable to me that men of good faith would try to twist world opinion in such a manner as to deceive people into believing that the starvation and hunger that is consuming 'Biafra' is a plot of Britian, Nigeria and others to commit genocide. POINT SIX - I cannot in all conscience serve you any longer. Nor can I be a party to suppressing the fact that your starving thousands have the food, medicine and milk available to them.....it can and is ready to be delivered through international organizations to you. Only your constant refusal has stopped its delivery. I am this date, tendering my resignation and am returning to Mr. Collins Obih of the African Continental Bank all the fees you have given me (Letter of Credit No. 354 $400,000 US. ) I have sent your representative in New York a Bond in the amount of 800.000 pounds that I was holding in your behalf. I have also this date, sent the Bond of 200,000 pounds issues by the Central Bankl of Nigeria back to them for disposal. POINT SEVEN - I am now convinced that one Nigeria is the only solution to peace. I also call upon you Mr. Ojukwu to allow your starving people to be fed. Their well-being is of deep concern to me as well as other right thinking people of the world. Your acting in the utmost haste in this matter is in my opinion the first step toward any lasting peace in your country." http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/guest-articles/biafran-documents-goldsteins-open-letter-of-resignation-to-odumegwu-ojukwu.html |

Ex Yobe gov to Jonathan: Review N-East budget or face insurgency on OCTOBER 15, 2012 · in NEWS 12:16 am 0 BY Emman Ovuakporie ABUJA—Former governor of Yobe State, Senator Buka Ibrahim, has warned the Federal Government to expect insurgency worse than that of the Boko Haram in the coming months, if it failed to redress the paltry funds appropriated to the North-East in the 2013 budget. The Senator spoke in the wake of the 2013 budget presentation by President Goodluck Jonathan at the National Assembly last Wednesday. He said Federal Government’s allocation to the region was alarming, arguing that it was another form of injustice. He said: “Boko Haram is a product of poverty. It is a product of unhappiness. We are unhappy with Nigeria. Unless something is done to address it, Nigeria should expect bigger Boko Haram insurgency, Insha Allah. “Other geo-political zones got N79 billion or N80 billion. But the North-East has only N50 billion; a difference of N30 billion. Go and check the budget figures or ask the Director-General Budget Office.” Asked what the Federal Government should do to avert such a development, he said continuous injustice could only breed continuous insecurity. “Look, injustice is the basis of all crises in the world. All insecurity comes from injustice. If injustice continues, there will never be peace. “The panacea is for the government to be conscious of the fact that this part of the country that is totally being neglected; this area called an area without security, is also an area to which injustice has been meted out for decades.” “Unless concerted effort is made to balance it up, there is no hope.” Reminded that the President’s 2013 budget was just a proposal and that the National Assembly could rectify the wrong, Abba said: “You see, when the difference is so huge from the Executive, it’s difficult for the National Assembly to really do much to completely change it. “More so, the members of the National Assembly are not all from the North-East.” The Senator said it was only 20 percent of members of the National Assembly that were from the North-East, adding that the remaining 80 percent will also want to work in favour of their own geo-political zones. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/10/ex-yobe-gov-to-jonathan-review-n-east-budget-or-face-insurgency/ |

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/10/how-boko-haram-started-gov-aliyu/ on OCTOBER 13, 2012 · in NEWS 12:32 am 0 By WOLE MOSADOMI, Minna Notorious leader of the radical Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko-haram, Abubakar Shekau started his ‘ministry’ in an expansive land located within a remote village in Niger state a few years ago before they were dislodged by the state government. Abubakar Shekau, the acclaimed spokesman of a factional group of the sect led by, Abubakar Kaka who is believed to have been killed by men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Maiduguri were dislodged from the then, Daru-Islam by security operatives in the year, 2009. Niger state Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu who made this known in Minna when he met with traders at the government house also confirmed that the pictures of both Shekau and Abu Kaka posted regularly on the sects websites and published in newspapers are the same with the ones the security agents captured before the duo were dislodged from Niger state. *Gov Aliyu Babangida of Niger State The Governor said but for the proactive nature adopted by the security agencies in dislodging the group from the state and the support given by state government, Niger state would been the headquarters of the dreaded sect. Governor Aliyu said it is necessary for all Nigerians to rise up and oppose the activities of the fundamentalists which he said has had untold negative effects on the economy of not only the northern part of the country but Nigeria as a whole. He said for any business to thrive it must be in a peaceful and secured environment, insisting that in view of the series of attacks on security men in Niger state capital government will tighten security within and outside Minna the state capital and therefore asked that they should cooperate with security operatives handling the exercise. Defending the movement of the old Minna central market to its present location, Governor Aliyu said the market when it was established did not envisage the rapid growth the state capital had witnessed. When the market was at its old location it contributed to congestion being experienced in the city centre, Aliyu said adding that the other market at PZ area of Minna will soon be moved to the Kure market to give more room for the development of the Minna city centre. Aliyu told his guests that critics of the administration were those who wanted him to be sharing public money without embarking on any developmental programmes, insisting that the same people will in no distant future turn round to say he (Aliyu) spent 8 years without anything to show for it. Governor Aliyu who solicited for the continued support of the administration in its developmental strides said, “My government will not share money, what is uppermost in my mind now is the development of the state”. The traders through their spokesmen Alhaji Mohammed Umoru and Alhaji Dandere pledged their loyalty to Governor Aliyu and his administration but asked that the governor should reduce the series of levies they have to pay daily in the markets. |

Speaking in Abuja at the pulling out parade to mark his retirement from the Nigerian Armed Forces after 38 years, Petinrin reminded his former colleagues how the military suffered untold neglect under military dictatorship and told them that “great national problems are not for your professional participation or military solution”. Lamenting how the glory of the military that placed it on the global scene was eroded by military intervention due to neglect until sanity was restored with the emergence of democracy in 1999, the former CDS praised former President Olusegun Obasanjo, late President Umaru Yar Adua and the incumbent, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for improving the lot of the armed forces . |
