Investment / Clean, Safe And True! by Seunade4444: 8:14am On Oct 27, 2016
In an economic sense, an investment is the purchase of goods that are not consumed today but are used in the future to create wealth.
- Investopedia.

To invest is to allocate money (or sometimes another resource, such as time) in the expectation of some benefit in the future. In finance, the expected future benefit from investment is called a return (to investment).

Commonly about investment is you put in less than you realize. A seed in a fruit grows to become a tree with many branches, each having many fruits, each fruit containing many seeds. That's exponential, Isn't it?
It's however important to invest wisely and with a hopefully target. No farmer will sacrifice his corn to the soil if none had ever germinated. Investment is not a choice but a must to have a better tomorrow. So the dilemma between loosing present goods and bearing the pain of unplanned future becomes something worth contemplating about.

Investment may mean taking a risk, even farming may not yield. But information is the key to minimizing the risk in investment. Never put down a corn if you have never known the soil.

I will now keep to a single thread for my tutorial.
This earlier thread 1.Learning android programming will now be maintained thanks.

I will now keep to this thread for every of my entry on Android programming tutorial.

Now I hope we all have the Android studio so we can start a group project together and learn the nitty gritty of it.
Open a new project. See a demonstration HERE.
If you choose to run your app(will write shortly on how to run your application) in that stage you will have a single activity app with a single text view saying "hello world". That means we have our studio set for the project.
You will follow from your own studio as WE create together an android app. Every of the step will be explained I recommend you get at least the 23 version of Android sdk. If you are not sure click on the SDK manager as shown. You should see a list of the available API levels and the one installed and in use by your studio like this.
You should now be set in our journey of creating a an android app.
Now I'm in a quandary about what form of App to use for the exhibition. I guess we are as much. I will welcome a suggestion, but for now I will move on to create a calculator App smiley

Seunnade, please I tried downloading but it was very slow and it later stopped. Please what should I do?
oh... sorry about it. Your network was probably not too good. May be you change your location and try again to download the studio.
You may try using free download manager.
I wish you a good luck!

Jayke50:
Thanks for this article. Please can i get Andro Studio Software for my laptop from you. If yes, please send it to my email via uchejude2015@gmail.com. My whatsapp no is 08135642400
Sorry I have been away for quite sometime due to some projects.
To be candid with you the needed set up is larger than what one can transfer over the mail(close to 2GB) asides the registration especially with Oracle.
Better to get at least 3 GB data access ready or preferably a wi-fi so the network doesn't break in-between and you start all over again smiley
You can use freedownloadmanager. It helps you download faster and also will prevent your downloading from restarting when you have a network break.
Android Studio alone is not sufficient an IDE. Like I stated in one of the threads you also need the Java kit and Android sdk. You can get all from HERE.

Programming / 2b. Learning Android Programming: Run Your First App. by Seunade4444: 11:54pm On Jul 19, 2016
Welcome to the second part of today's class.
Hopefully you have your IDE set for running you first app.

We will look at this simple steps to creating your first app.

1.After installation of the Android studio you can click on create a new project if you don't have the project already opened.
2. Fill out the fields about your new project which include,
a. App name. This is what the users see.
b. The company domain name is used to uniquely identify your app. Thus, even if two different companies create Android
apps with the same name, you can still see which is which
because their company domain names will be different. If
you have a company, type in the company's domain name
in reverse (e.g. com.jenkov). If you have no company, you
can just choose a fictive company domain name. To make
this first app it doesn't matter so much. Only if you plan to
release it to Google Play, then the company domain name
matters.
c. Package name is set by the studio itself using your company domain and the app name.

3 Select a location on your system where you want your project files to be. For instance the project location your first
project could be: D:\data\projects\android-studio-projects
\MyFirstApplication

4. Under Select the form factors your app will run on, check the box for Phone and Tablet. For Minimum SDK, select API 8: Android 2.2 (Froyo)

5. Leave all of the other options (TV, Wear, and Glass) unchecked and click Next.

6.The third screen in the "New Project" dialog asks you to add
an activity to your Android app. I recommend you add the empty activity.
7. The fourth screen in the "New Project" dialog asks you to
choose option for your new file (activity). You have to
choose an activity name, layout name and a title. The dialog
has already suggested some names. Just leave these
suggestions in the input fields and click the "Finish" button.

If you run the application , the simple hello word application is built.
I will talk more on this.

Programming / 2. Learning Android Programming. by Seunade4444: 5:04pm On Jul 19, 2016
Hello everyone.
The week has been hectic but I'm trying to ensure I keep up with the class. I meant I also want your commitments.

Our objectives today:
1. To understand the basic Android program structure.
2.To provide an enabling environment for android programming.
3. To run you first app on your mobile phone.
But I will divide the class into two and discuss the running of our first class later today because of the size of the lesson and my time. I type on my phone and can be tiring. I also have a busy schedule as a doctor.

I love to learn new lessons by relating it with what I'm familiar with. And I also love to move from the known to the unknown.

When you pick up a device with an Android Os and you run the App on it you carry out the developer intentions by interacting with the screen. That you are very much familier with. But really,
1. the developer had written the programs in well arranged files.
2. the IDE had debugged and compiled it into a single package called an Apk file. Java programmers are more familier with packages.
3. the apk file interact with the device android os through installation to provide a UI ( user interface).
4. You interact with the UI.

I will talk a little more on these starting from the last pathway phase because that is very much familiar.
The interface we are talking about here is the single interface. We will discuss about the multiple interface later on. So your screen page on the device is an interface.
An interface are made up of
1. Views or/and group view
2. Parent Layout

The view is a four side plain that perform a specific display role. The length and breath are determined through programming by the developer. And the name of the view depends on what it does. If it displays a read only text we call it a TextView. If it displays an image we will call it an ImageView.
There are views that launches a new activity( we will talk more on activities) when clicked. That means like having a new screen page on the device on clicking the view. that is called a ButtonView.
Look at the Image shown we see the icon on the logo at the left upper corner. The brainymed is a TextView while the image below it is an ImageView. If you look down you'll notice there are 6 image buttons which opens a new activity on a click. The 6 buttons are grouped together in a smaller layout as a group view.

The views rather than being the building block of the interface are rather contained in a layout. The layout is called the parent layout provide the maximum extend any of the child view can stretch . the layout also determine the positioning of the child views in it. Actually you don't always get to see the demarcation for the length and breadth of each view simply because the view background are often made transparent. So you only see what the view display on the layout background.
Other view includes a ListView, a ScrollView a, WebView and so on. We will discuss the views in details later on.

I will relate the user interface with the programming files.
Now you know the page in an Android screen is made up of a layout and the child views.
We build our layout and may bethe containing child view by writing our code xml code in the layout folder files with a .xml extension.
But the interface layout can only be displayed from the activity which is a java file. So to display an XML layout file you have to write your java code and reference the particular XML layout.
The activities also reference the layout view as object and define their behavior.
Our arrangements of the activity flow are written in the manifest file. So the first activity with the launcher intent- filter launches the app. So you decide which activity you want the app to first run on starting the app. The launching activity display any layout it reference. And also open a new activity by the user feed back from UI interaction with the referenced ButtonView.
This may sound like crooked at first but it's very straight if you follow it well. We will still discuss all these in details but as an overview to the lesson of discussion we briefly talk about how our first app works.
For now I will only talk on the part of the program you will edit to build your first app.

IDE.
After this aspect you should not expect any more special detail. I will write now extensively on the developer environment.
Earlier I recommended you download an android studio. You will also need to download the java Jdk file from the same site you have have downloaded the android studio. You will need to register with Oracle and agree to their terms for the jdk. I shouldn't need to tell you that Oracle now owns java. Note that the Android SDK is already in the studio.
So an IDE contains the default packages you need to develop an app, a debugger. and it also helps you to run your application. Here we mean a virtual machine that runs your app after building it. So you test your app on the virtual machine after building and compiling it.
You can also use your android phone to run your app . When we need to run our first app I will show how to turn your phone into a debugger.
After installing the Studio and the Java jdk you can now open your studio to crate a new project.
If you don't have a laptop simply use the Android IDE application. All are self directive on installing the IDE app.

We are set to run our first app from our IDE.
I will post the remaining part of today's lesson later tonight.

To follow up I opened a WhatsApp group on it.
To join contact me via WhatsApp on 08133371934.
Thanks.

Programming / 1. Learning Android Programming by Seunade4444: 12:16am On Jul 18, 2016
Hello landers. I want to extend my class on Android programming to an open platform for interested individuals to benefit and also contribute.
You can ask your question from replying to the thread.
I will not post any picture in this introductory class
Objectives
1. To know about Android.
2. To know the basic tool to start with.
3. Know how to download an Android IDE.

What is Android.
I personally don't like being bored with history and things that don't really contribute to understanding the subject matter. So in other not to waste your precious time on this I will simply say Android is an open source operating system. The source codes are therefore made public.
The programming language includes C++/Java and XML. Well I use and Android in particular now encourage Java and XML.
The android market is very large and it's own by Google. So I can say the skill is very lucrative.

Basic Tools.
Often time people want to know the requirements to start learning programming. I won't say there is not but most likely what you already have. My basic tool will be;
1. Readiness to learn.
it's a new thing you are learning and must therefore mean business otherwise you get discouraged.
2. An IDE ( Integrated Development Environment)
That simply means a platform where you can write your code and run it. I would encourage a Laptop, but presently there are cool Android IDE app. You can download any. I have included the device you may need.
3. Prior exposure to programming may help but is never absolute. I will say necessarily you must be able to operate a computer system and manage the files. Supposing you don't even know anything about computer. Well that simply means you may have to put up with any of these local computer basic computer training and join on when satisfied with the rudiments.
4. Time.
Time I don't mean the 24/7 sort of. But I should let you know you won't be a good programmer if you only attend to it once in a month. May be good but slow.
5. Always know that knowledge of programming is endless. We keep learning. Even those who developed the Android OS made the source code open for the purpose of contributions.
Therefore often be ready to learn and also ask questions.
6. Register with the Android Developer Console. This is only necessary if you have to publish your app on Google play. store. We will discuss in details later about this.

Downloading an IDE.
You IDE depends on your device.
For laptop owners, just type android studio on your search engine. On Google the first entry always has it. And if anything has changed it wouldn't have been displaced off the first page. The site is developer.android. com/tools
There are other IDE but Android studio by the Intellij platform is best for beginners.
For those not having a laptop you can search for Android IDE on the play store and download any well reviewed app.

I initially thought of including the lesson on building the first app from the studio or android IDE but that may mean typing more and besides might be cumbersome for a lesson.
Next I will post on creating your first app.
Your questions below please.

To follow the class contact my whatapp number to receive update of the lessons as I post on the forum. 08133371934.
