Chelsea Eze, a Linguistics graduate of University of Maiduguri has long gone from being a rookie to a force to be reckoned with in Nollywood since her exploits in her debut movie ‘Silent Scandal’ in 2009. Her recent efforts in blockbusters like ‘Hoodrush’, ‘Two Brides and a Baby’ confirmed her arrival on the scene. In a recent chat with our reporter, Chelsea opens up on her route to acting and other things that have shaped her life. Excerpts: Describe yourself? I’m Chelsea Eze, Nollywood actress. I love the simple things of life, so I guess I’m a good girl. How did you start acting? I guess I was at the right place at the right time. God put me in line with people that mattered at the time to help boost my career. My friend was shooting and she said it seemed you’re bored at home, follow me to see. And then I went and I met Aunty Emem Isong and they said: “Let’s put her on camera and see what she looks like”. So they had a mini-audition for me, after that, they said: “Fine, now we know what you look like on camera and if we have something we’ll call you ”. And I got a call after a long time from Vivian Ejike and that was how I did my first movie, ‘Silent Scandal’ in 2009.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/stumbled-acting-chelsea-eze/ |

The ‘Social Media’ People’s parliament has won another milestone. Jude ‘engees’ Okoye who we earlier reported fans had blasted for posting pictures of firearms on his Instagram page has apologised for his conduct and taken down the photo. Jude Okoye tweeted His apology comes barely three days after comedian Basket Mouth was also forced to make his own statements after a joke gone sour on rape. Jude had on Tuesday uploaded pictures of his pistols and bullets enraging a lot of people on social media who had demanded he took it down.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/jude-okoye-apologises-firearms-pix/ |
Many candidates registering for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, were shocked when they were given the choice to pick only one university of their choice, contrary to the traditional first and second choice options of universities and/or polytechnics. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, responsible for the UTME, in a new policy has made it compulsory for candidates to pick one university, one polytechnic, one college of education and one innovative enterprise institute (IEI) when registering for their exams. The Registrar, JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, believes that this policy will go a long way in solving the admission crisis bedeviling the country. In an exclusive interview with Vanguard Learning, he said: “Most university managements claim that they do not run second class universities, and as a result, do not want to admit students who choose them as a second choice. From our experience, universities refuse to take students who make them a second choice, but they do not hesitate to collect the students’ money when they want to write the post-UTME. And this is not fair to students.http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/jambs-one-varsity-directive-mean-candidates/ |
MAKURDI — A 21-year-old final year female student of the Benue State University, BSU, Joan Adaaku, has been reportedly found dead in a hotel room located in the heart of Makurdi, the Benue State capital. Vanguard gathered from sources who preferred anonymity that the Economics undergraduate had checked into Savannah Guest House at about 7 a.m after paying N2,000 for a room According to the source, “She actually arrived the hotel alone and after underaking some check-in formalities she entered the room and locked herself up. “She never came out of her room again either to ask for food or any other things. So, at exactly 6 p.m, a room attendant knocked on her door to find out if she was interest in being attended to by room service. “Her silence aroused suspicion and the room attendant, who repeated his call to the room at 8pm without reply, alerted the manager on duty. “It was at that point that the management alerted the Police who moved in and broke into the room and discovered the lifeless body of the lady in a position that suggested she was making a call before her deathhttp://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/01/final-year-female-benue-varsity-student-dies-hotel-room/ |

I can’t go nude at any price – Cynthia Okonkwo Cynthia. Okonkwo is one of the budding actresses in Nollywood. Cynthia’s flair for acting brought her to limelight, with lots of movies to her credit. She speaks with WG, where she opens up on her life in Nollywood. Enjoy it! You were in Berlin, Germany few weeks ago. What were you doing there? I travelled to Germany for the 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival. The Festival was all about International stars on the red carpet, enthusiastic fans, filmmakers from all over the world and above all, great films, between 7 and 17 February. Berlin is the centre of the film world during the 63rd International Film Festival. In fact, it’s the first time I ever travelled out of Nigeria for a film Festival. Despite the fact that you are still young in the industry, you are already mingling with the big names. Aren’t you lucky? Yes, I think I am blessed. I don’t really have anything short of being ‘blessed’. I count myself lucky in the industry. God has been on my side because I haven’t put in so much energy into the industry, yet I have recorded a lot of results. I think that’s what favour is all about. From where do you draw your acting inspiration? Everything inspires me. But Nigeria is a very dramatic country to draw inspiration from. So far, I have acted well over twenty movies in less than three years. Were you getting roles easily at the time you started acting? Well, I haven’t really gone through so much stress in getting roles in movies. But that does not mean I haven’t been attending auditions. I attended auditions after auditions but I never gave up any hope. It wasn’t so stressful for me even though I got my first role, while attending audition. Ever since then, I haven’t looked back. Have you ever had any nasty experience in the industry? I never had any nasty experience so far. I think my acting skill paved way for me. It makes things easier for me to scale through in the industry. So, I really don’t have any reason to use the back door to rise to fame. I am not a desperate person. Are you saying there are ‘desperadoes’ in the industry? There are desperadoes everywhere, not just in Nollywood. People are desperate to survive, they are desperate for everything, so, it’s not about Nollywood alone. Where can you be found when you are not filming? In the comfort of my home of course. Do you have a relationship with God? Yes, I do. And as a Christian prayer becomes a way of life for me. It’s not that I have a particular style of praying. I pray fervently. Can being a good girl take you to the top of your career? It can’t, one needs to remain focused to hit the top. To some extent, I am focused. What can you not do in the name of acting? I can’t go nude because our culture forbids it. That’s it What of overcoming the temptations that are associated with the kind of job you do? Temptation in this regard could mean different things. You could have issues with a colleague in the industry. Common sense requires that you learn to handle such issues with wisdom. Do you keep a low profile? Not at all. I don’t keep a low profile, but I am not somebody you can see at nightclubs or meet at social gatherings. I know where I want to be at a particular time. Are you in any relationship? That’s private to me. I want to separate my private life from my work. What kind of labels do you like to wear? Any clothes that makes me feel good and, is stable for me. Probably such clothes that every young girl would like to wear; simple and stylish. I am a simple girl by nature, so, everything about my dressing tend towards simplicity. The same thing goes for my hair do. I like flowing hair-do. How would you describe your journey into Nollywood? I think I am blessed, I have moved from one level to another level. My work is being appreciated by a lot of people and I am happy. I am peaceful, and I don’t like so many dramas. How many films have you featured in so far? I have played several roles in over 20 movies with no stopping in sight. I have worked in movies such as, House Party, Devils Workshop, Evil Agenda, Another Hell, Not for Kids, Stolen, Dangerous Love, Professor Ibrahim, Missing Identity, Heart of a Princess, ALANPOZA, Supernatural Woman, Mr. Perfect, Cornerstone, Room 027, Hot and Sexy, Heavy Duty Bloody Encounter, Battle Line, Darkness of Sorrow and others.http://gistofnigeria..com/2013/08/i-cant-go-nude-at-any-price-cynthia.html

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Tuesday heeded pleas from the Senate Committee on Education, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa’i and his Labour and Productivity counterpart, Chief Emeka Wogu, to end its seven-week-old strike. However, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which was also invitedto another meeting called by the National Assembly Joint Committee on Education, stayed away, prompting a member of the committee, Hon. Jerry Alaboso, to describe ASUU’s action as intellectual arrogance. ASUU had on July 1, commenced a nationwide strike over alleged federal government’s refusal to implement the agreement it reached with it over unpaid entitlements since 2009. At the meeting Tuesday, which was also attended by representatives of Colleges ofEducation Academic Staff Union (COEASU),lawmakers, Rufa’i and Wogu, waited in vain expecting ASUU’s national executives. The lawmakers were later told that ASUU officials were absent because they could no longer wait for the joint committee’s long meeting with ASUP and COEASU. Polytechnic lecturers in the country under the aegis of ASUP, have been on strike since April 29. However, the Chairman of Senate Committee on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, who chaired the meeting, was forced to schedule to another day for a meeting with ASUU officials, who were said to have left the Senate complex in anger, after waiting for several hours for the joint committee to end its meeting with ASUP and COEASU. During the meeting, National President of ASUP, Dr. Chibuzor Asomugha, was prevailed upon to make commitment to end the strike within two weeks, while the government tidies up agreements on theirdemand. “We will try everything within our ambits to do the biddings of the National Assembly on the need for us to call off the strike soonest,” he said.http://gistofnigeria..com/2013/07/asup-calls-off-strike.html |

Following the indefinite strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), last Monday, the union, Sunday, disclosed that it will not suspend the industrial action, unless the Federal Government accedes to the agreement it reached with it in 2009. This is even as the union debunked reports on some social and online media that it has suspended its one-week old strike. Speaking with Vanguard, ASUU Chairman, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Chapter, Dr.Karo Ogbinaka said: “The strike is still ongoing. We have not suspended or called-off the strike. Perhaps, before we do that, a National Executive Council (NEC) meetingmust be held, then, the resolutions of the meeting will be made known to all chapters of the union,” adding, “The indefinite and total strike will continue, except government meets our demands.” Meanwhile, FG through its Ministry of Education led by Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufain will Monday, meet with stakeholders in the industry, which included Vice Chancellors of Federal universities and their Governing Councils, together with interested Vice Chancellors of State and Private universities. However, at the time of filing this report, full details of agenda for the meeting was not made known. It would recalled that the union had last Monday, called out its members on an indefinite industrial action over what it termed government’s failure to honour the Academic Earned Allowance (AEA) which formed a component of the 2009 agreement the government signed with the unionhttp://gistofnigeria..com/2013/07/we-have-not-called-off-strike-ASUU.html |
