Politics / Rivers Elections Tribunal To Hear 56 Petitions by shachris01: 9:16pm On May 11, 2015
Fifty-six election petitions ‎have been filed before the Rivers State Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Apo, Abuja.

The Rivers State elections tribunal has the highest number of petitions among the other state elections tribunals sitting in Abuja.

The election tribunals of Rivers, Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states are sitting Abuja because of security concerns in these states.

Five of the petitions filed before the Rivers State tribunal were filed before the governorship election panel while the 51 other petitions were filed before the legislative houses election panel.

Among the 51 other petitions ‎were three filed by the All Progressives Congress candidates with respect to the elections into the three senatorial seats in the state.

The rest of the petitions comprise 14 petitions challenging the election into the state’s 13 House of Representatives seats and 37 others challenging elections into the 32 available seats in the state House of Assembly.

The five governorship petitioners were part of the 18 governorship candidates who contested the April 11, 2015 governorship election.

The petitioners want the tribunal to nullify the election which the Independent National Electoral Commission declared was won by Chief Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party‎.

The petitioners are Dakuku Peterside of the All Progressives Congress‎, Charles Harry of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Tonye Princewill of Labour Party‎, Kemka Elenwo of KOWA Party‎ and Minaibim Harry of the Social Democratic Party.

‎The legislative election tribunal headed by Justice V. U Okorie had its inaugural sitting on Monday.

It was learnt that the governorship election petition panel headed by Justice Ayuba Kwajaffa will have its inaugural sitting within the week.

Meanwhile, Senator Magnus Abe of the APC, in his petition before the Justice Okorie-led tribunal is seeking the nullification of the election of Olaka Nwogu of the PDP who was declared winner of Rivers South East Senatorial poll held on March 28, 2015.

He asked the tribunal to nullify the election on the grounds that it was fraught with malpractices and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Politics / Police Recover Card Readers, Laptops In Abia Estate by shachris01: 9:04pm On May 11, 2015
Barely one week after eight staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abia State were quizzed for alleged attempt to steal card readers, the police have recovered five card readers and two laptops belonging to INEC from a hideout in Umuahia.

The recovery was said to have been made by detectives of the Zone 9 Police Command Umuahia.

The INEC materials, according to a Police source, were found in “a hidden location” in Amoba Housing Estate, Old Umuahia, following a tip off.

Our source added that the items were recovered from a location close to the residence of one of the INEC officials being interrogated by the police over the attempted card reader theft.

Six more INEC staff, including the Secretary to the Resident Electoral Commissioner, were picked up last Thursday besides two Information Communication Technology employees earlier arrested in connection with the card reader theft.

The REC, Prof. Selina Oko, said she was also informed about the recovery by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 9, Mr Usman Gwary, on Monday.

Oko explained that she travelled outside the state, adding that she AIG inspect the recovered item when she returned to the state.

She said, “The AIG called me this morning to come and inspect some materials that were recovered but I told him that I was not in Umuahia.

“I told him that I would come to inspect them when I return.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in charge of the zone, Mr. Emmanuel Jiakponna, declined comment on the matter.

He rather demanded the source of the reporter’s information.

Politics / Sensitive Materials Removal: Security Beefed Up At INEC Offices In Abia by shachris01: 7:04am On May 11, 2015
Following the ugly incidents in some of the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abia State in the past weeks, security operatives have increased surveillance around the offices of the electoral umpire across the state.

About two weeks ago, INEC office at Omoba in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state was attacked and allegedly set on fire by unidentified hoodlums.

Just last week, some staff members of INEC were arrested by security men on duty at the state headquarters of the commission while moving out with some card readers and other sensitive materials to an unknown destination.

Checks by Daily Sun revealed that increased security around the offices was aimed at forestalling a re-occurrence of the events of the past weeks.

A security source said the action was also aimed at providing security for the staff of the electoral body that had expressed concern over their safety after the Isiala Ngwa South incident.

Other sources said the presence of the security agents may not be unconnected with the recent attempt by some INEC staff to take away some card readers and other sensitive materials used for the 2015 elections in the state.

Speaking on the development, INEC Public Relations Officer for the state, Mr. Edwin Enabor, said he was not aware about the security beef up around the offices.

“I am not aware of the beefing up of security around our offices, but if there was anything like that, it may not be unconnected with the attack in our office at Isiala Ngwa,” he said.

Politics / IT Stakeholders Express Reservation On NATCOM Ability To Revive NITEL by shachris01: 11:57am On May 05, 2015
Stakeholders in the country’s telecommunications industry have expressed their reservation on the ability of NATCOM the new owners of Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) and its subsidiary Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTEL) to revive the distressed national carrier.

This is coming as fallout of the recent approval given by the federal government to hand over NITEL/MTEL facilities to NATCOM consortium having completed the payment of $252.251million cost of acquisition.

Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) Gbenga Adebayo, said he don’t have details of the transaction and NATCOM Consortium’s financial strength, adding that being able to raise the sum they bided shows they are serious to compete in the telecom market.

Adebayo affirmed that NITEL/MTEL under the present owners will now be late starters and urged them to create impact through innovative and value added services to attract subscribers to its network.

He explained that NATCOM has to carry out a complete re-engineering of NITEL’s infrastructure as some of the loop may have been blocked or destroyed by as a result of road constructions, and solicited for the support of Nigerians to help them survive the stiff competitive telecom market.

O his part, immediate past president, Association Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) and group managing director, Teledom Group Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, said that NATCOM Consortium has a opportunity of surviving in the already crowded telecom market in the country and encouraged them to focus on providing landline which is currently none existence in the country.

“We should remember that NITEL has telephone exchanges in almost all the local government across the country, although, some of the cable and switches may be obsolete, but the real estate, towers, racks and power cable are still useful,” he said.

He urged NATCOM Consortium to look inward by providing Nigerians fibre to home service that can give people access to broadband and cable television.

Speaking in the same vein, the President, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers of Nigeria (NATCOMS) Deolu Ogunbanjo, said that NATCOM Consortium need to concentrate more on its unique selling preposition which is landline service that also goes along with broadband service.

“They are coming at a time when the policy guideline required for broadband penetration has been established by the minister of Communications Technology. It is only for them to key in to the policy through investment in that area. They should look at Etisalat model that surprised everybody,” Ogunbanjo said.

It would be recalled that at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) mandated the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) to handover the two companies to NATCOM consortium, having paid the cost of acquisition which brought the process to a close.

Politics / Corruption: List Of Obasanjo's Alleged Crimes by shachris01: 11:11am On May 05, 2015
Obiageli Ezekwesili is yet to hear the last on her Aljazeera interview during which she declined from calling her former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo 'corrupt'. Moses E. Ochonu in his article titled 'Ezekwesili’s Disappointing Outing On Obasanjo And Corruption' posted on SAHARA REPORTERS has stated reasons why Obasanjo is corrupt.

Obasanjo 1

I am a huge fan of Obiageli Oby Ezekwesili, but I have said elsewhere that my problem with her loud, anti-corruption activism is that it is strangely amnesiac and hypocritical. Even as she proclaims herself a one-woman transparency police, she inadvertently advertises the contradictions of the Obasanjo government, in which she served. I admire her personal integrity and sincerely believe that she is incorruptible.

However, when you go around self-righteously castigating the corruption of the present government without even a perfunctory acknowledgement of, or an effort to explain your failure to prevent or punish, the corruption of the government for which you were supposed to act as gatekeeper for public procurement and contracts (the primary conduit for political and bureaucratic corruption in Nigeria), your rhetoric rings hollow and raises questions about the sincerity and consistency of your moral indignation at malfeasance. It is only a matter of time before such duplicity is exposed, and Ezekwesili’s moment of exposure came in her interview with Mehdi Hasan on Al-Jazeera, which has now gone viral.

It was under Ezekwesili’s superintending eyes that many corruption scandals occurred, including the grand larceny of expending $16 billion or $10 billion (depending on who you believe) on contracts in the power sector only to have the contracts abandoned or left undone while the contractors, who were connected to Obasanjo and other politicians of his government, pocketed their loots. It was under her watch as enforcer of transparency in the Due Process Office that Obasanjo acquired his 600 million Naira shares in Transcorp as a incumbent president and, after public outcry, declared farcically that he had lodged the shares in a blind trust, never mind the unanswered question of how he got the money to purchase the shares and of the ethical propriety of acquiring shares in an enterprise set up, capitalized, and privileged by your own government.

It was while Ezekwesili was in the Due Process Office that Obasanjo smuggled dollars in Andy Ubah's private jet into the USA, the interception of which caused so much brouhaha he had to reluctantly own up to the money, claiming it was meant for the purchase of equipment for his farm in Otta. It was during Ezekwesili’s tenure as due process chief that Obasanjo fraudulently and corruptly raised billions of Naira for his presidential library project, for which the late Gani Fawehinmi took him to court. It was while she held watch that Obasanjo started building his multi-billion Naira Bells University, and it was during the same period that his bankrupt farm experienced a miraculous turnaround and started generating $30 million monthly according to one of his aides.

Davo93: This thread is going gaga again like the open letter own. I implore Seun to come in and salvage matter before it is fully blown.

My Opinion:
-A lots of Nairalanders want Sexkillz stripped of his Mod powers.
-I don't think there is no being in life who don't deserve a second chance ONLY when they admit fault.
-I plead on my knees to fellow Nairalanders to let us take Seun by what he said earlier; a Sensi-bility Rehabilitation Program(SRP) is underway for the moderators to ensure all deficiencies are rehabilitated.
-I also implore Sexkillz to drop his ego and tender an unreserved apology to the teaming aggrieved Nairalanders. Even Seun did that yesterday.

Regards

He is too big to render an apology. His puffed up ego would not let him. So he must go.
