Politics / Meet The Cute Baby Born With 12 Toes And 12 Fingers (photo) by shachris01: 4:46pm On May 27, 2015
A baby born with 12 fingers and 12 toes has left doctors baffled – but his Mum says, ‘I quite like the extra fingers’.

There were no signs that there was anything wrong with seven-month-old Jacob Duffy before he was born in November last year.

But mum Rachael Hendry, 24, and dad John Duffy, 28, found that baby Jacob had four extra digits – and an undiagnosed complex syndrome which has left him with a number of defects, including a hole in the heart and eye conditions.

Rachael said: ‘We joked around a bit at first and said that at least he will be good on the piano but obviously we quickly realised that things were a bit more serious.

‘I quite like the extra fingers and I don’t really want the surgeons to chop them off but kids are quite cruel and I could hardly send him to school with them.’

Doctors aim to operate after he is 12 months old – and his parents are now trying to raise cash for a sensory room to aid his development.

Politics / Jonathan Bags Peace Award For Conceding Defeat To Buhari by shachris01: 1:31pm On May 27, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan was on Tuesday honoured with another award of “Peace Loving Global Citizen” for his decision to accept the result of the 2015 Presidential poll.
The award was presented to the President by the Universal Peace Federation(UPF) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking at the event, President Jonathan urged the incoming administration to accept the contributions of all Nigerians to the progress and development of the country.

“We have a country, the country will be more united. I believe and only pray that the incoming government should appreciate the contributions of everybody and see how we will run Nigeria as a country that belongs to everybody and all citizens irrespective political persuasion.”

While commending the group for the honour, Mr. Jonathan said Vice-President Namadi Sambo also deserved the honour, saying that his singular act of accepting defeat in the election also affected him.

“My singular act has made you now to come and honour us, not just me, I ran the election with the Vice President and if we have won, two of us would have been here but by that act, two of us are packing out on Friday, he equally deserves the encomium that you have given me.

“My party, the PDP also deserves the encomium award.”

The President stated that he took the decision to accept the result of the election because there must be a nation first before any ambition.

“I use to say that even if I will be President for the next 25 years, I will not be a happy person if so many people die because of me.

“One thing is to hold office, another thing is to be able to satisfy your conscience,’’

According to him, when he leaves office, the remaining part of his life will be dedicated to issues that would bring unity and peace to the country.

Speaking earlier, leader of the group, Mike Ozekhome, said Mr. Jonathan deserve global recognition following his decision to accept defeat in the just concluded election.

According to him, Nigeria is now respected in the comity of nations not only because of Jonathan’s achievements but because of his decision to accept the result of the election.

Mr. Ozekhome stated that by Mr. Jonathan’s singular act, he had snatched victory from defeat.

Politics / Fayose And The 19 APC Lawmakers Tried, But Could Not Agree To Kiss And Make Up by shachris01: 6:51am On May 26, 2015
The impasse between the Governor of Ekiti state, Ayo Fayose and the 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, could have been resolved today, Monday, May 25, but they just could not arrive at a middle ground.

They met behind closed doors in Sunview Hotel, Alagbaka, in Akure, Ondo state, to try and resolve the crisis that has engulfed the state since November 2014.

The meeting which lasted over five hours, had 5 of the APC lawmakers in attendance, which included the embattled Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin, his deputy, Tunji Orisalade, Bunmi Orilowo, Churchill Adedipe and Gbenga Odebunmi.

The remaining persons present at the meeting were; Chief of staff to the Governor, Mr. Dipo Anisulowo; the Ekiti State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi; a lawmaker-elect, Mr. Kola Oluwawole, and the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. John James.

Soundbites from both camps after the meeting suggested that although they tried to shift ground, they simply weren’t ready to meet each other halfway.

Fayose was offering to the lawmakers the arrears of their salaries and other entitlements, and yes, they wanted the offer alongside something else, a return to status quo.

In essence, they wanted the illegally impeached speaker, Adewale Omirin, reinstated and everything returned back to normal, like it all never happened.

But it seemingly didn’t fly with the governor, who came out to say: “I don’t want to answer any question, but we are only going to make one statement and the statement is: Today, we have met in the overall interest of our state believing that we will be able to find solution to the problem.”

After the meeting, Fayose left while the five lawmakers continued with the meeting, only to release a statement afterwards through Omirin’s Special Adviser on Media, Wole Olujobi.

The lawmakers said they insisted on a return to the status quo as of November 11, 2014, before any peace deal could be struck, adding that Fayose admitted that he might have difficulty in resolving the return to the status quo because the matter was already in court.

They said: “While the governor emphasised before the lawmakers the offer of their salaries and other entitlements, the lawmakers insisted on t‎he return to the status quo as of November 11, 2014.

That means restoring all the principal officers to their positions and all aides of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, including those of other principal officers should be restored to their positions.

The lawmakers made it clear they were ready to return to their jobs and the governor should provide atmosphere for that possibility. They asked the governor to clear the House of Assembly of thugs and create conditions that would make them do their jobs without any security threats.

T‎hey insisted that restoring the security aides of the principal officers and opening the Assembly for resumption of their legal duties should be the starting point for the restoration of peace.”‎

Politics / Jonathan Deprived EFCC Of Funds –lamorde by shachris01: 6:40am On May 26, 2015
Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, yesterday indicted the outgoing Jonathan administration, blaming it over the poor performance of the agency.

Speaking through the commission’s spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC boss, blamed its inability to tackle corruption on inadequate funding from the outgoing government.

According to Uwujaren, “we are happy that the incoming government is making the fight against corruption one of its cardinal objectives. Every Nigerian is happy about that. EFCC has been doing this for more than 11 years. We are proud of what the incoming administration wants to do.

“We need an administration that will look at what we are doing and empower us sufficiently to enable us make more impact than we have ever done in the past. We welcome the focus and we believe Nigeria needs to tackle this fight more rigorously for us to make the needed impact.”

Uwujaren proudly listed series of achievements recorded by the agency in over 10 years of its existence, claiming significant progress had been made in the prosecution of former governors. He said assets that belonged to some of ex-governors had been seized, while money running into billions of dollars had been recovered on behalf of the Nigerian government.

“It is important to recall some of the milestones achieved by the commission in the investigation, prosecution and recovery of assets of politically exposed persons, including ex-governors,” Uwujaren noted.

Politics / PDP Appoints Haliru Mohammed, As Acting Bot Chairman by shachris01: 6:30am On May 26, 2015
Dr Haliru Bello Mohammed: appointed acting national chairman of PDP

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of Peoples Democratic Party on Monday approved the nomination of the former acting National Chairman of the party, Dr Haliru Bello Mohammed, as its acting Chairman.

The Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, told State House Correspondents at the end of the BOT meeting in Abuja that Mohammed, who was the only nominee for the position, would act in that capacity until a substantive BoT chairman was elected.

He said that very soon the party would convene a meeting where both the National Chairman and the BoT chairman would be elected.

He also said that the acting Chairman of the party, Chief Uche Secondus, would continue in that capacity until a substantive chairman was elected.

Mohammed also told the correspondents that he was very happy to accept the responsibility for the period to start the process of repositioning the party towards the 2019 general elections.

He said that the executive powers of the party still resided with the National Working Committee (NWC) while the BOT would act as the conscience of the party and advice the NWC on how to move the party forward.

“We are determined that we will pull our ideas.

“Most of what remains as the founding fathers of the PDP is in the BOT.

“Therefore we will make sure that we use their collective wisdom to also reach out to all our members in all the states of the federation so that we will bring the party back to the grassroots.

“We are sending this party back to the people and with what we have seen in the last 16 years our relationship with the people of Nigeria we are confident that the PDP will still remain the largest party in Africa and certainly the party of choice in Nigeria.

The acting National Chairman, Secondus, in his contribution said the acting officials would collaborate with the party to take the party back to the grassroots.

“By so doing we are going to reinvent and reposition ourselves for the new position of PDP to provide vibrant, robust and constructive opposition.

The National Secretary of the BoT, Sen. Walid Jubrin, said the acting officials would be in office for about three months as the appointments were a temporary measure to reposition the party.

Jubrin said that President Goodluck Jonathan had declined to serve as the Acting chairman of the BOT which informed the nomination of Mohammed to fill the vacuum created by the resignation of the former chairman, Chief Tony Anenih.

He said the BOT and the NWC would sit down to take a decision on when to fix the convention of the party where substantive officers to occupy the vacant positions would be elected.

Politics / After 22 Years, French Court Orders NNPC To Pay N95bn To Lenoil by shachris01: 10:51am On May 23, 2015

The French Court of Appeal in Paris has ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to pay LUTIN Investments (BVI) Limited (Lenoil Group) the sum of $477 million, about N95 billion using interbank rate.

The dispute, which started 22 years ago, has seen both LUTIN and the corporation traversing the courtrooms and arbitration centres in Nigeria and France.

According to the document made available to THISDAY, the case started in July 1993 when NNPC illegally terminated $300 million strategic reserve contract with LUTIN; and agreed to pay compensation.

Failing to pay, the matter was referred to an arbitrator (retired and late Supreme Court Justice Uche Omo) in 1994.

Dissatisfied with the arbitrator, NNPC sued the arbitrator and LUTIN in 1994.

In 2006, after losing at the Federal High Court, and Court of Appeal), the Nigerian Supreme Court ruled against NNPC, and the matter was returned to the arbitrator for adjudication.

In May 2007, the arbitrator ruled that NNPC should pay LUTIN the sum of $55,281,000, N20,400, and N4,690,000; plus compound interest of 10 per cent, 10 per cent, and 21 per cent respectively from 1993 till full payment is made.

In October 2009, the late President Umaru Musa Yar`Adua, directed the board of NNPC and the Solicitor-General of the Federation to sign a settlement agreement with LUTIN, and pay the sum of $55,281,000 as full and final payment.

On October 7, 2009, LUTIN signed a settlement agreement and terms of settlement with NNPC.

The then Group Managing Director of the corporation, Mr. Austen Oniwon, Company Secretary, Prof. Yinka Omorogbe, the then Minister of Petroleum, Dr. Rilwanu Lukman and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aonodoaka, witnessed the agreements.

On October 29, 2009, NNPC obtained a consent judgement from the FHC, which called on NNPC to pay LUTIN within seven days.

However, NNPC filed an application at the Federal High Court in Abuja, claiming that those who signed the agreements were not authorised to do so and therefore refused to comply with the consent judgement.

In 2010, the Federal High Court in Abuja proceeded to garnish NNPC’s bank accounts in Nigeria, but NNPC challenged the garnishee nisi.

Frustrated with NNPC’s inability to comply with signed agreements, and almost 18 years of litigation in Nigeria, LUTIN applied for enforcement of the Supreme Court backed Arbitral Award in West Africa, Europe, and the United States in 2011.
In December 2011, the Senegalese High Court ruled that NNPC must pay the full award of $330 million, and ordered the seizure of NNPC’s crude oil.

After numerous appeals to President Goodluck Jonathan, the President in February 2012 directed the Justice Ministry and NNPC to honour the consent judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja; but NNPC and the Petroleum Minister refused, and advised Mr. President investigate LUTIN for “possible fraudulent activities in 1993”.

In spite of the numerous advices for an out-of-court settlement by the late Chief Bola Ige, SAN, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, Chief Bayo Ojo, SAN, Chief Kayode Adetokunbo, SAN, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke, SAN, and senior officials of the Ministry of Justice, NNPC continued the litigation for 22 years.

However, after the submission of its two years investigation by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the commission recommended that President Jonathan should comply with the court rulings.

On October 14, 2014, the French Court of Appeal in Paris heard NNPC’s appeal against the enforcement of the Arbitral Award. Part of NNPC’s defence was that settlement agreements were not authorised by the boards of LUTIN, and NNPC; therefore, the agreements should be disregarded by the French court.

In late November 2014, NNPC paid LUTIN the sum of $55,281,000.00, and filed new settlement agreements with the Paris court; to avoid a $500,000,000.00 judgement.

On December 2, 2014, the French court ruled against all the defences put up by NNPC, including the settlement agreements, and ordered NNPC to pay LUTIN the sum of $477,365,000.00 (N96 billion); or $503,000,000.00 as of today (May 23, 2015).

“Since Nigeria is a signatory to the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), and United Nations Charter on International arbitration, it is hopeful that NNPC will be made to comply with the French court ruling; to avoid its assets (crude oil, bank accounts, and refined petroleum products) from being seized and/or confiscated outside Nigeria,” said one of the lawyers who represented LUTIN during the trial in Paris.

In addition to a strong legal team in New York, Paris, and Dakar, LUTIN was represented by a team of Nigeria’s brightest Senior Advocates: Mr. Uche Nwokedi, SAN, Dr. Gbolahan Elias, SAN, Chief Femi Falana, SAN, Mr. Tokunbo Williams SAN, Mr. Ricky, Tarfa, SAN, Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, Late Chief FRA Williams, SAN; while NNPC was represented by Dr. Wale Babalakin, SAN.

Politics / Ekiti Biggest Market Burnt Down As Hausa Traders, Drivers' Clashes Escalate by shachris01: 10:36am On May 23, 2015
Thisday reports that some parts of the biggest market in Ado Ekiti has been burnt down by unknown arsonists on Friday. This is not unconnected to the bloody clashes that have ensued between drivers and Hausa traders in the city.

Ayodele-Fayose

It would be recalled that the State governor, Ayodele Fayose had imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Ado Ekiti metropolis following the clashes, but this didn't stop the arsonist from gaining entry and burning down the market. The part of the market that was razed was the Lagos line where children wares and other items are sold.

Following this development, the governor has once again called on the State Police Commissioner to step up security in the metropolis, especially the Post Office - Oja Oba - Old garage area and the popular Atikankan spot in order to prevent any further havoc.

Politics / Untold Gists Of First Lady’s Thanksgiving -olalekan Adetayo by shachris01: 10:06am On May 23, 2015
Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, was at her best again on Sunday. The venue was the Aso Villa Chapel where she joined her husband, our outgoing President, for a special thanksgiving and farewell service organised in their honour.

patience glows

As usual, President Jonathan arrived the chapel a bit earlier than his wife. He was already seated, engrossed in the Sunday School, a Bible study session that always precedes the Sunday service proper before his wife arrived. The President’s Chaplain, Ven. Obioma Onwuzurumba, was the one conducting the session. He threw a question at the congregation and his wife, Martha, stood up to offer an answer.

It was in the process of answering that question that the main door of the fully air-conditioned chapel was thrown open to enable Mrs. Jonathan and her retinue of aides to move in. Mrs. Onwuzurumba had to pause for a few minutes to allow the new entrants find their seats before she continued with the answer.

Mama Peace remained calm throughout the service. She read the first lesson of the service from Numbers 6:22-27. After the message was delivered, Onwuzurumba announced that the President and his family would offer a special thanksgiving while Mrs. Jonathan would also offer another special thanksgiving.

At that point, I had started suspecting that something would happen. For the first thanksgiving, Jonathan, his wife and members of their family danced forward with their offering. They were asked to stand on the altar and face the congregation while friends, political associates and well-wishers danced forward, dropped their offerings and danced back to their seats. All of us danced very well in the presence of God except for Jonathan who had confessed penultimate Sunday that whenever he considered what God had done in his life, he wished he could dance like the biblical King David but he kept missing his steps whenever he made attempts.

After praying for them, Onwuzurumba announced that Mrs. Jonathan would give a short testimony before coming for her thanksgiving. I quickly ran from my seat and located a loudspeaker where I hurriedly placed my digital recorder. I knew that mama would give a good story for Monday edition. I was however disappointed when it was again announced that she would go ahead with her thanksgiving without the testimony. I felt bad that those who prevailed on her not to talk had deprived me of a good story.

Politics / Jonathan May Emerge PDP Bot Chair Monday - Daily Trust by shachris01: 7:53am On May 23, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan may be elected as Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) on Monday. This followed the resignation of Chief Tony Anenih as the BoT chairman few hours after the embattled PDP National Chairman Adamu Mua’zu threw in the towel.
Already, a meeting of the party’s BoT, expected to be used to elect a new chairman has been scheduled for Monday night at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa. A notice of the 48th PDP BoT meeting signed by the board’s secretary Senator Walid Jibril, urged all members to be punctual.
The last meeting to be held in the Presidential Villa before the handover to the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government is expected to be presided over by the party’s acting National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.

Last Wednesday, Chief Anenih announced his resignation in a one-page letter to President Jonathan, saying that he decided to quit because of the current state of affairs in the party. He added that he stepped down to allow President Jonathan take over as BoT chairman when his tenure ends on May 29.

Politics / Massive Protests Rock Abuja by shachris01: 7:53am On May 22, 2015
Aggrieved traders and teachers yesterday staged two separate protests in Abuja, over the refusal of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration to allow them buy their business premises in Wuse Zone Three of the city and failure to regularise the employment of contract teachers.

The FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed has, however, denied allegations that he secretly gave 11th-hour employment to his friends and family members in the administration.

Over 200 contract staff teachers from different primary and secondary schools in the territory participated in the peaceful protest in the premises of FCT Administration, appealing to the minister to give a directive for them to be absorbed by the administration.

“We were given contract employment and they have been paying us since then. However, our salaries were terminated at the end of the contract and since then we have been applying and expecting them to absorb us in the system but all our efforts have proved abortive, that was why we decided to organise this peaceful protest to reawaken their consciousness on our plea,” one of the protesters explained.

Members of Wuse Zone Three Market Traders Association, however, barricaded the entrance of the FCT Administration’s premises, denying staff and visitors entry and exit for several hours on the allegation that the FCT Minister denied them the right to acquire their business premises.

In their hundreds, the traders expressed disappointment that the minister decided to sell the premises to a private oil and gas company.

Speaking on their behalf, Mr. Ifeanyi Asiegbu told newsmen that the minister had earlier denied them the opportunity of owning the land on the excuse that it was a rail transit point.

“But we are surprised to see some surveyors mapping the land and they gave us 48 hours notice to vacate the premises or risk destruction of our property,” he said.

The minister, however, explained to the protesting teachers that he only gave directive for the employment of 50 Mathematics and science teachers.

“We noticed that our schools are lacking in science and Mathematics teachers and we cannot afford to be backward in such subjects, because the world is developing in technology,” he said.

This is so, so sad. A senior civil servant in the Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, Mr. Ojo Owolabi, has attempted to end his life by drinking a large quantity of insecticide.

It was learnt that Owolabi took the action because of his inability to feed his family due to the failure of the state government to pay salaries.

Civil servants in the state have not been paid their salaries in the last six months.

Punch reports that the incident which happened at Owolabi’s residence last Saturday caused
pandemonium in the neighborhood. Owolabi, who is a sanitary officer at the council was receiving treatment at a hospital.

A source close to Owolabi said he became frustrated as a result of his inability to meet his family’s needs. The source said:

“Baba Ibeji ( Owolabi) drank herbicide. He was frustrated because he has been unable to feed himself and other members of his family. You are aware that the state government has not paid workers for some months now. I think he just lost hope and decided to take his life by drinking Gramoxone.

Members of his family rushed him to a hospital in Ile Ife, where he was admitted. We are praying that he survives it.”

Owolabi’s wife and children were said to have relocated from their apartment and could not be reached for comment.

The Chairman of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, Mr. David Owoeye, tacitly confirmed the incident to Punch on the telephone. Owoeye said:

“Has the news spread to you? We don’t want to make it public so that it will not embarrass the family.”

A factional Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Gambi Yusuf, said the unpaid salaries had caused the workers untold hardship. Yusuf said:

“Anybody who is not paid for six months is a walking corpse. What do you expect him to eat? Even if the workers can fast, won’t they break their fast? How do you expect them to feed their children?

The government of the day should be more serious about workers’ welfare. We are appealing to the government to pay workers because workers deserve their wages.”

The Director of the state Bureau of Communication, Semiu Okanlawon, said, “I am not aware of the incident and I don’t see the nexus between a man drinking poison and when the government will pay workers’ salaries.”

The state police spokesperson, Folasade Odoro, could not be reached on the telephone. She had also yet to reply to a text message sent to her phone.

Politics / APC To Elect Next Senate President At Party Primaries Tomorrow - Daily Sun by shachris01: 9:55pm On May 21, 2015
There are reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is going ahead with an open primary to select a sole candidate to succeed David Mark as Senate President next month, Daily Sun reports.

apc

Reports say 59 senators and senators-elect of the party will make the decision at a one-day retreat tomorrow.

It is yet unclear whether the primary would hold in Abuja or Lagos but it was further gathered that, all the 59 senators and senators-elect are “expected to sign an undertaking to abide by the party position on whoever emerges as the party’s candidate after the primary.

“Thereafter, the runner-up is expected to emerge as the deputy Senate President. In the event where the runner-up is from the same zone as the winner of the primary, another primary election would be conducted and whoever emerges would be the deputy.”

Presently, major contenders are: Senators Ahmad Lawan (Yobe, North east), Bukola Saraki (Kwara, North central), George Akume (Benue, North central) and Ali Mohammed Ndume (Borno, North east).

Some senators are reportedly not happy with the arrangement. They would rather senators are allowed to “choose our leader in the chamber,” said a senator from the North west but who declined to be named.

Politics / Oil Workers Want Buhari To Declare State Of Emergency On Petroleum Sector by shachris01: 4:32pm On May 21, 2015
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has called on the incoming administration of Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in the country’s oil and gas sector on assumption of office if the myriad of problems there are to be addressed.

The senior oil industry workers said there was no sub-sector of the oil and gas industry that was not going through one teething problem or the other, drawing down the sector and the entire national economy.

President of PENGASSAN, Francis Johnson, said there were many issues that required urgent attention from the incoming government to ensure that the industry was repositioned for efficient and effective delivery of its benefits to Nigerians.

Mr. Johnson stressed the need for an all-inclusive stakeholders’ forum of all players in the sector to critically examine and proffer workable and enduring solutions to all the problems in the larger interest of the country.

“All the sub-sectors of the oil and gas industry have one challenge or the other affecting the delivery of the benefits of our God-given hydrocarbon resources to the country and the entire people of Nigeria,” the PENGASSAN president said.

These challenges, he pointed out, were traced to past neglects, wrong policies and policy somersaults in some sub-sectors. He said these were inflicting untold pains on Nigerians who ought to be enjoying the benefits of the natural resources god bequeathed to the country.

Some of the challenges, he said, included oil and gas pipeline vandalism, crude oil theft, state of the refineries, intractable and persistent scarcity of petroleum products and corruption in fuel subsidy payments.

Other challenges include controversial divestment, illegal transfer or allocation of oil blocks, irregular joint venture funding, with emphasis on delay in cash call payment, inadequate funding of government agencies in the oil and gas sector and undue interference in the management of government agencies.

The union leader said the stakeholders’ forum would chart the ways of attending to the critical challenges affecting the industry and evolve a framework to facilitate its stability.

He said it would help set in motion the machinery for periodic meetings to evaluate and review the success and workability of the framework.
