Christianity EtcThe Life Of Saint Philomena by ShackAttack(op): 4:29pm On Jun 21, 2013
St. Philomena, Patroness and Protectress of the Living Rosary

Credited with countless miracles and intercessions since discovery of her tomb in the most ancient catacombs of St. Priscilla in Rome in 1802, St. Philomena is prayed to by people of diverse ages, culture and social standing around the world. The young virgin who was martyred at age 13, willingly traded her earthly life for heavenly salvation and continues her work today promoting the virtues of purity and sanctity among the world’s youth and bringing the faithful closer to our Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ. It would seem she was held in quiet reserve by God for nearly seventeen centuries and summoned at a time when so much uncertainty and absence of faith abound.

On August 10, 1835, Pauline received a miraculous cure of a severe heart ailment at Saint Philomena’s shrine in Mugnano del Cardinale, Italy, during the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Immediately following, she appealed to Pope Gregory XVI to begin an examination for the beatification of "Filumena," daughter of light. And on Jan. 13, 1837, Pope Gregory XVI named St. Philomena Patroness of the Living Rosary, and declared her to be the "Thaumaturga," the "Great Wonder-Worker of the nineteenth century." In a solemn decree, he raised her to the altar of the Church, granting her a special feast day (August 11) and a Mass in her honor.

The name Philomena (fee-lo-MAY-nah) is of Latin origin. The inscription on the original loculus tiles, is Filumena. The word filia is Latin for daughter. The word, lumena, is Latin for, light, lamp, lantern; light of day; the eye; clearness; understanding.

Pauline promoted Saint Philomena as the Supporter of Missionary Priests. Upon her return to France from Mugnano, she was eager to recount the story of her miraculous cure with her dear friend, the Venerable Cure of Ars, St. John Vianney Link Out, and offered him part of the precious relics she brought from the Sanctuary. Immediately, an incredible bond and well-known devotion formed between this holy priest and his "Dear Little Saint."

Saint Philomena was, as believed by her devotees within the Catholic Church, a young virgin martyr whose remains were discovered in 1802 in the Catacombs of Priscilla. Three tiles enclosing the tomb bore an inscription that was taken to indicate that her name (in the Latin of the inscription) was Filumena, the English form of which is Philomena.

The remains were removed to Mugnano del Cardinale in 1805 and became the focus of widespread devotion, with several miracles credited to the saint's intercession, including the healing of Venerable Pauline Jaricot in 1835, which received wide publicity. Saint John Vianney attributed to her intercession the extraordinary cures that others attributed to himself.

In 1833 a Neapolitan nun reported that in a vision Saint Philomena had revealed that she was a Greek princess martyred at 13 years of age by Diocletian, who was Roman Emperor from 284 to 305.

From 1837 to 1961 celebration of her liturgical feast was approved for some places, but was never included in the General Roman Calendar for universal use. The 1920 typical edition of the Roman Missal included a mention of her, under 11 August, in the section headed Missae pro aliquibus locis (Masses for some places), with an indication that the Mass to be used in those places was one from the common of a Virgin Martyr, without any collect proper to the saint.

On 14 February 1961, the Holy See ordered that the name of Saint Philomena be removed from all liturgical calendars that mentioned her. Accordingly, the 1962 Roman Missal, the edition whose continued use as an extraordinary form of the Roman Rite is authorized by the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, also has no mention of her.

The shrine of her relics in Mugnano del Cardinale continues to be visited by pilgrimages from many countries, an Archconfraternity in her honour exists, as does popular devotion in various places around the world.

Discovery of the remains

On 24 May 1802 in the Catacombs of Priscilla on the Via Salaria Nova an inscribed loculus (space hollowed out of the rock) was found, and on the following day it was carefully examined and opened. The loculus was closed with three terra cotta tiles, on which was the following inscription: lumena paxte cumfi. It was and is generally accepted that the tiles were in a wrong order and that the inscription originally read, with the leftmost tile placed on the right: pax tecum Filumena (i.e."Peace with you, Philomena"wink. Within the loculus was found the skeleton of a female between thirteen and fifteen years old. Embedded in the cement was a small glass phial with vestiges of what was taken to be blood. In accordance with the assumptions of the time, the remains were taken to be those of a virgin martyr named Philomena.

The belief that such vials were signs of the grave of a martyr was still held in 1863, when a 10 December decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites confirmed a decree of 10 April 1668. But this view has been rejected in practice since the investigations of Giovanni Battista De Rossi (1822–1894).

In 1805, Canon Francesco De Lucia requested relics for a new altar, and on 8 June[7] obtained the remains discovered in May 1802 (reduced to dust and fragments) for his church in Mugnano del Cardinale, where they arrived on 11 August, after being taken from Rome to Naples on 1 July.

In 1827, Pope Leo XII gave to the church in Mugnano del Cardinale the three inscribed terra cotta slabs that had been taken from the tomb.

Spread of devotion

In his Relazione istorica della traslazione del sagro corpo di s. Filomena da Roma a Mugnano del Cardinale, written in 1833, Canon De Lucia recounted that wonders accompanied the arrival of the relics in his church, among them a statue that sweated some liquid continuously for three days.

A miracle accepted as proved in the same year was the multiplication of the bone dust of the saint, which provided for hundreds of reliquaries without the original amount experiencing any decrease in quantity.

Devotion includes the wearing of the "Cord of Philomena", a red and white cord, which had a number of indulgences attached to it, including a plenary indulgence on the day on which the cord was worn for the first time, indulgences that were not renewed in Indulgentiarum doctrina, the 1967 general revision of the discipline concerning them. There was or is also the chaplet of Saint Philomena, with three white beads in honour of the Blessed Trinity and thirteen red beads in honour of the thirteen years of the saint's life.

Reported life of the Saint

On 21 December 1833, the Holy Office declared that there was nothing contrary to the Catholic faith in the revelations that Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù (1799–1875), a Dominican tertiary from Naples, claimed to have received from the Saint herself.

According to Sister Maria Luisa di Gesù, Saint Philomena told her she was the daughter of a king in Greece who, with his wife, had converted to Christianity. At the age of about 13 she took a vow of consecrated virginity. When the Emperor Diocletian threatened to make war on her father, her father went with his family to Rome to ask for peace. The Emperor fell in love with the young Philomena and, when she refused to be his wife, subjected her to a series of torments: scourging, from whose effects two angels cured her; drowning with an anchor attached to her (two angels cut the rope and raised her to the river bank); being shot with arrows, (on the first occasion her wounds were healed; on the second, the arrows turned aside; and on the third, they returned and killed six of the archers, after which, several of the others became Christians). Finally the Emperor had her decapitated. The story goes that the decapitation occurred on a Friday at three in the afternoon, as with the death of Jesus. The two anchors, three arrows, the palm and the ivy leaf on the tiles found in the tomb were interpreted as symbols of her martyrdom.

In these visions, Saint Philomena also revealed that her birthday was 10 January, that her martyrdom occurred on 10 August (the date also of the arrival of her relics in Mugnano del Cardinale), and that her name "Filumena" meant "daughter of light". (It is usually taken to be derived from a Greek word meaning "beloved".)

ProgrammingRe: Best Laptops & Desktop Computers For Programmers?? by ShackAttack: 8:26am On Jun 15, 2013
Seun: I'm with you bro. My Dell XPS 15 L502X is the best programming laptop I've ever used. All the new laptops I've studied are inferior to it in one way or the other, including the more modern versions of the Dell XPS. All that's required to make it absolutely perfect is to replace the hard disk drive with a 128GB solid state drive. It's also easy to repair and maintain. However, I'm worried about the age of that model. Newer Windows laptops have touchscreens, Windows 8, super-fast Haswell processor. I also think the 15 inch display is suboptimal since programmers love big displays and the 1080p resolution feels a bit cramped on the 15 inch display - it would probably be perfect on a 17 inch display!

Thanks, but many developers swear by their giant monitors. This makes me feel that a 13-inch laptop would not be desirable.
Simply get a dual screen and plug into the lapi.
SportsEleven FCB Players Inconfederations Cup by ShackAttack(op): 5:27pm On Jun 14, 2013
Nine players are representing Spain, while the remaining two are for brazil.

The Confederations Cup is the only major title that has so far eluded Spain, a country that has won the European Championship three times and the World Cup once. The current squad includes Valdés, Piqué, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Villa and Pedro, who with Barça and Spain have won every major international or club honour going apart from this one. The other Barça players in Brazil, Jordi Alba and Cesc Fàbregas, have other medals missing from their collection too.

Spain start their campaign in what in Europe will be the early hours of Monday morning (00.00) against Uruguay in Recife. After that, they’ll complete the group against Oceanian minnows Tahiti and African champions Nigeria.

A twenty 23 years old graduate sociology student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ms Hikmat Baba Dua from the northern region has been selected among Africa’s most outstanding emerging women leaders by Moremi Initiative for Women’s Leadership in Africa (MILEAD).

Ms Hikmat was selected from over 2,120 applications from 44 countries for the 2013. The selected women will become part of the growing MILEAD community of powerful Pan-African network of change makers- a new generation of young women leaders.

The 28 selected MILEAD Fellows represent Africa’s most promising young women leaders with the courage and commitment to lead and shape the future of Africa. The Fellows were chosen through a highly competitive selection process and criteria based on their outstanding leadership promise, community service accomplishments, and commitment to the advancement of women in Africa.

Ms. Hikmat Baba Dua’s selection was informed as a result of her passion for advancing the course of incorporating the feminine voice at all levels of decision making.

As an accomplished debater, she used the power of speech to rise to the top of leadership positions in the Students’ Parliament as deputy speaker, and the Students Representative Council as deputy PRO at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) having served in other leadership positions at the JCR level and associations.

For her distinguished leadership to the KNUST community, she was nominated and eventually won the 2011/2012 KNUST Personality of the Year at the Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Awards and other awards. She has for the past years advocated for girl child education and women in decision making on radio and on TV. Hikmat recently put together an advocacy group of young dynamic female leaders known as the “league of young female leaders” to advocate for girl child education and mentor these young ones to take on leadership roles in their schools.

Speaking to Zaa News about her selection, Ms. Hikmat reaffirmed her commitment to uplifting young women in Africa and the world at large. She also hopes to use the opportunity to shaping the lives of the many young women in Africa.

She is a proud fellow of the International Development Summer Institute (2010) organized by Pennsylvania University, USA and the KNUST.

She is currently with the University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale as a National Service Personnel. Representing twenty five African countries and the Diaspora, the 2013 Fellows epitomize a Pan-African diversity with multi-disciplinary academic, professional and social backgrounds.

From poverty to women’s economic empowerment, environmental justice and political participation, this new generation of African women leaders are proof that Africa can produce the bold, visionary and inspirational leadership needed to lift Africa to its rightful place on the global stage.

The 2013 Fellows are between the ages of 19 and 25, but are already actively leading change on pertinent issues, both at the grassroots and international level. The MILEAD Fellows will converge in Accra, Ghana to kick-start the 2013 MILEAD Leadership Institute- a three-week intensive training program, which will be hosted by the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, Legon.

Fellows will be mentored by experienced and accomplished women leaders who are committed to supporting and nurturing the next generation of African women leaders. Founded in 2004, The Moremi

Initiative for Women's Leadership in Africa strives to engage, inspire, and equip young women and girls to become the next generation of leading politicians, activists, social entrepreneurs, and change agents- leaders who can transform and change institutions that legitimize and perpetuate injustices and discrimination against women.

Matchup: Statistically, Ferrer has played the best tournament of
his career at a major - he's played perfect clay court tennis against a variety of opponent's who have games that are better suited to other surfaces. He has
played solid, consistent, relatively
conservative tennis, keeping the ball deep in the court, making it difficult for his opponents to attack and taking his chances when he has an obvious opening. Unfortunately for
Ferrer, that style of play will not beat Nadal.

Nadal has played his way into this final by digging out matches against aggressive players with big games and big shots with the exception of Kei Nishikori who Nadal knocked off in straight sets losing a total of 8 games. The 7 time champion here has proven that he can handle whatever the opposition throws at him - even coming back in the 5th set against the No. 1-ranked player in the world. Ferrer has nothing to scare him with.

Nadal has more power and aggression than Ferrer, Rafa's high kicking forehand will make life difficult for the 5' 9" Ferrer - especially on his two handed backhand side - and will create many short balls that Nadal can attack. Ferrer's only real chance is if Nadal is not on his game physically. Ferrer does not have the game to beat Nadal, he must
hope that he's still on the court when Nadal loses.

It was an interesting match that proved easy for the number one seed.

Serena wraps the match with and ace to lift win Roland Garros after 11 years! What a comprehensive performance by Williams as one must feel sorry for Sharapova as the Russian gave everything she had. The American just did not put a step wrong throughout the match as she overpowered and outplayed Sharapova in two closely contested sets in an hour and 46 minutes. With monstrous serves and really heavy forehands, the American pleases the crowd that supported her further as she expressed her feelings in French, something she has been practicing really hard.

PARIS — Serena Williams spent the French Open fortnight showing off her French.

Now she can can parler francais while holding the French Open trophy.

Top-seeded Williams beat No. 2 Maria Sharapova 6-4, 6-4 to secure her second French Open title, 11 years to the day after she beat her older sister Venus to win her first in 2002.

A year after crashing out of the French Open's opening round for the first time in her career, Williams returned to play one of her best wire-to-wire tournaments.

She dropped just 29 games, matching her best Grand Slam effort (she also dropped 29 games on her way to the 2002 U.S. Open title).

With 16 Grand Slam titles, the 31-year-old American trails Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova by two majors for sixth place all time.

Fist pumping and screaming "C'mon!" almost from the get-go, Sharapova survived a 0-40 deficit in the opening game and then broke Williams for 2-0.

But the 26-year-old failed to convert two game points on her serve the next game, and Williams – invoking some vocal histrionics and menacing fist pumps of her own – broke back.

Sharapova didn't fade, breaking Williams again for 4-4, but the American had too much firepower. Her baseline drives were deeper. Her serves were more accurate. Her defense was better.

Since her first-round exit here a year ago, Williams has captured three of the last four majors and a gold medal at the London Olympics.

Williams, who charmed crowds with her on-court interviews in the native tongue — something she said she had prepared for 12 months ago — eclipsed seven-time champion Evert as oldest Roland Garros winner in the Open era (31 years, 256 days).

Sharapova, the defending French Open champion, dropped to 2-14 vs. Williams, including 13 in a row and four defeats this season.

Williams improved to 43-2 this year, including 23-0 on clay. Now comes the switch to grass, and she'll be a heavy favorite to win Wimbledon for the sixth time.

Friday last week I had this ear problem (i could hear very well) and then before Monday it had been intense as my cheek and jaws began to pain me. That very Sunday I meet this lady you said I should rob bam and pour Hydrogen peroxide into my ear - of course I did just as she said and then within an hour the pain was gone. Oh! How happy I was then but the ear never got better. I slept it off thinking it will get better by morning the next day but nothing. I did not go to work throuhout thir week because it had gotten worse.

Please, pray for me.
