Savod couldn't stand the irritating crowd and left angrily with his sons. "I can't believe what my eyes have seen" he told Sinus as they were heading back home. "I think there is more to this, this is pure abomination and no one seems to care, now I am beginning to doubt if Nnas is the right man to lead us to the promise land." Sinus said. At the Gwenza Tower later that day, the sun has already set and darkness is already covering the cloud. Savod could be seen arguing with a guard on how important he needs to see the Gwenza, after sometimes he was let in. "Your Grace" he greeted bowing his head "Savod, you should know I will.be needing rest after such a hectic day" Nnas said. Though he has never been devout, but the burning gods make Savod feel ill, he could see Nnas coughing from the smoke of a cigar a similar pipe Lord Logan was holding earlier in the day "I am thinking of including the Maza sign of cross into our sigil Savod " said Nnas "of what use would that be afterall our nation will cease to exist in few months to come when the coalesce begins" Savod argued. Nnas dropped his cigar and took a gulp from his bottle of wine, " that doesn't stop us from flying our sigil" Nnas said. " I heard we shall all fly a united sigil" the chief said, "I have always known you are against these outlanders and their faith, but I will tell you what, they are superior beings and better people than us, I don't see any wrong if we decide to follow in their footsteps to become great" the Gwenza said. Savod was offered the pipe but he rejected. "But they don't have two heads, they are whites and we are blacks, they say we worship scriptures but they also worship pictures I see no difference" Savod told Nnas. The Gwenza adjusted his seat and move closer to Savod "do you think I ever wanted this? huh! have you ever been to the outlanders' land? go there and see for yourself how developed and civilized they are, the earlier we accept their faith the better for us. look at us what do we have? our land is no more suitable for farming, we depend on the North for food the sea is polluted and the ores are fast becoming scarce. I have made an agreement with Logan on how the upcoming coalesce will favor us, and part of the condition given was that we must accept their faith, what would it profit us if we refuse and remain stagnant? if we are not ready to outsmart our soon neighbors to be, they will take advantage of our weakness and boss over us. The only way now is to be on the good books of the outlanders so we don't suffer in vain." He explained. " And you think burning our gods will make them love us?" Savod queried. The Gwenza laughed.. "There are somethings you don't know but this is all you need to for now , I will advice you to go home and have it at the back of your mind that we never burnt any god". |
CHAPTER THREE SOVAD Savod Dakor is among the hundreds watching the statue of Ene burn outside the gates of the shrine. His sons Sinus and Tutis agreed with him that it is an ill thing to burn the ancient god, but Savod cautions them that this is not the right place for such talks. Opposite the shrine is a two-storey building which has just been completed, it has a big scripture of an ancient outlander virgin on the roof. Tutis who just returned from a long term journey could hear the crowd cheering as they watch on while their gods which they have worshipped for thousands of years burn on. "Are you sure the Gwenza is aware of this?" He asked Savod. "Of course, do you think it's possible to have done this without his knowledge?" Savod replied. " So are we free folks now or what"? he further asked. "There's a new faith and the Gwenza is in full support of it" said Savod. Tutis look worried and said "but the gods have been burnt, what other faith could we practice?" Savod looked at his son and gave him a wink to remain silent as the Gwenza troops could be heard marching towards the scene. Savod was a successful fisherman who gathered a lot of wealth and with his affluence, he was made chief by the late Gwenza Onas Azuk, he has six boys, four of whom he lost to the Kondo war which ravaged the Habaz land and left many men dead and women taken as slaves, their sea was polluted and thus ended farming and fishing in the land. His surviving older son, Sinus has since joined the Habaz army while Tutis is a blacksmith. It wasn't long enough before Gwenza Nnas Azuk led the troops to the scene, together with him is the Head of Province, Lord Logan and his accomplice Lady Sean. They were both outlanders sent to negotiate the upcoming coalesce of all Provinces and Emirates by the great Queen of Lansland who is the most powerful and influential ruler in the world. "Habaz wèlè" The Gwenza greeted his people in local tongue and they replied "wè". He was a fat and pot bellied man in his late fifties but looks older than his actual age, he wore a white short gown and underneath it was a wrapper tied around his waist and a red cap with the symbol of ore on it which stands for the sigil of Habaz. " I'm honored to have all great chiefs of Habaz here today, we all know why we are here today, it is no more news that the gods we have worshipped for years have refused to save us, they stood still and watch while our men were killed and our women raped before being taken as slaves, it is time we move from darkness and embrace the new light .On this note I bring to you the Holy Temple of Maza, the great virgin who the most high has sent to the whole world to liberate and enlighten us more. There was cheers among the crowd as they appluad him. He continues " it' has been 10 years now since the Kondo war and we have not yet stand up from our fall, but I can assure you my people that this new god will help us more than we can ever imagine, let's all come together and accept her as our savior. I will let Lord Logan take it from here "My Lord " he said as he stepped back. Logan is a white skinned man with blonde hair which is uncommon in the whole Lough province. He has been the administrator for five years ever since the Queen grew interest in the welfare of the Lough race. He could be seen with smoke coming out from his mouth after inhaling a long pipe from his right hand. "Great Habaz people, I thank you all for the warm reception you have always shown us ever since we stepped into your land. I have no more to say than what the Gwenza has said, this is the light, I'm glad you have all burnt the darkness in your lives and I promise you that as long as you live your life. t the rules of the faith and follow every word of the compass" *** He could be seen raising a book up*** He continued for sometime and gave reasons why they should adore their new god, applause followed after his speech and the Gwenza led them all to the new Temple where foods and wine were served. |

CHAPTER TWO SOFI She was dressed in a black gown covering every part of her body with a veil on her head which marched her black gown, she could be seen soloquizng some prayer words to herself as her maid Nana watch on. She had been born a Katanka at Kono an Emirate east of Zungeru where her father Sadi Katako had ruled for nealry three decades after a palace coup that saw the exiled late Emir Bua Laumdo displaced and barnished away from the land after he was found guilty of fathering an incest born with his half sister Kumala. They were both whipped and drove away from the Emirate until his unfortunate death. She had always been a pretty, affectionate and jovial Emira since her time in Kono before she was married off to Rumi Zunga. There were many suitors who wanted her hand in marriage, great Emirs and Chiefs groomed their sons well to be the rightful husband of the Great Katako's young damsel but Rumi edged them out with his charming looks and athletic body and most of all his good sense of humor. They are in the fourth decade of their marriage and they have been blessed with four kids, a set of twin and a boy and girl apiece Nana had been waiting for Sofi to round up her prayers so she could deliver her message to her. "My Lady, the Emir called for you" the maid said with her eyes facing her toes. "Where is he?" asked Sofi, "at the steel yard my Lady" she replied. Sofi quickly rounded up with her prayers and made sure she looked good and decent enough to join her husband at the troop's training yard. "Here you are" she said bowing a little bit. "Please sit, ****sighs**** have you ever thought about life after me and how our great family would be able to cope?" Rumi asked. "Why would you say that?"Sofi asked curiously "I'm just being realistic, there's nothing to worry about because sooner or later I will leave this world and join my forefathers, the only legacy I will be leaving behind is you, the kids and the Emirate" Rumi clarified. "That's right but you shall not die anytime soon my Lord" she prayed "I know and pray so but my fear is that my dynasty is on trial" Sofi was shocked " Who dares challenge your rule in this great Emirate? You are known to be a fearless fighter and a very wise leader, I can tell you that every men and women of this Emirate are solidly behind your reign" his wife assured . "That's also right, except two people and they keep giving me sleepless nights" The Emir said. "Who are the nonentities and allow me to send down the wrath of God on them for daring to challenge your noble rule" She said. This is beyond our God, he said. "Nothing is beyond my God, don't be pessimistic" she fumed. There was a brief silence before he said "well, my two problems right now is the terrorist and traitor who calls himself Emir and my brother in the capital" Sofi then asked " did you hear any bad news concerning your brother?" He sipped from his cup of water and said "You will never understand, I heard nothing concerning him but us, I received a raven from the Rector of Report last night" curious now "and what did it say? he calls for refill of his cup before he could continue "The outlanders have reached an agreement with the Sudan to merge the Lough province and it's environs together with the whole Caliphate to form a one, bigger and United kingdom" a guard at the far away end seems to be shocked by this revelation. " The question is what do we have in common? absolutely nothing" she cried. " Your guess is as good as mine and I'm worried because when these filthy and adulterous bastards start to share the same nation with us, we all know how corny and treacherous they could be, I'm so mich worried my heir is not strong enough to resist these unfaithful fellows, how will he be able to hold the Emirate together against our new frienemies ?" Rumi said. "Rabi is not weak, he is wise and fierce just like you my Lord" she disagreed. "Wise yes but fierce I doubt" he lamented. "He is strong and does well with the sword or haven't you seen how how he holds his pony so well while riding his camel?" she defended. "Woman I see war coming from different angles, the Sheki's army of Baku keeps waking war at us, there's also the political turmoil between I and my brother at the court and now we also have to share our lands and beliefs with those filthy lougherns South of the Caliphate, do you think Rabi will be able to handle all these pressure when the time comes"? He asked "I believe that's why we have allies, I'm sure they will always help since they have sworn to protect the Emirate irrespective of who rules it"Sofi answered. "Those are mere words from men, once they see any opportunity to oust a weak ruler, they will never hesitate to foul their vow" Rumi explained. Sofi gave her husband's words a deep thought and realized the same scenario played out in her own hometown of Kono where her own father took advantage of Bua's weakness and together with the Chiefs and the court they successfully dethroned him . " But my Lord, can't the Sudan reject these bleached men's offer?" she asked "He also wish he could, but I heard they are holding him by the balls and have threatened to stop financing the Dormitory and also the supply of arms to the Gunners. I heard he is also considering the benefits the palm rich land and the sea of these Southerners will have on us here, nevertheless,we shouldn't have anything to do with these immoral beings to begin with so when I get to the court, I shall make my stand known and object to this unfortunate union" he said . "But that could cost you your head, no one objects the Sudan " she warned "I don't care, at least history will be kind to me I warned you all of this unpleasant marriage " he complained." You don't have to lose your life before you make your stand known on this my Lord , why not send a raven to the capital and let the Sudan know of your reasons to this objection?" she asked . "That would change nothing as the plan as already kicked off, they just need us all the noble Emirs,Rulers and Chiefs to be present so it can be announced officially" the Emir said. "What would you have us do then?" the Emira asked, Rumi gulps his filled cup of water and felt a sigh of relief , "this is why I want my house to be in order so as to be prepared for whatever happens afterwards, I have a plan" he said. "What is this plan?" the wife asked. "I suggest I go to the capital with Rabi and nake him join the capital guard , he is highborn so he would be given a good position to start with, he will have the opportunity to train and become a better fighter there , his wisdom will make him survive the capital, by doing so I will name Rubi as my heir in him I trust this Emirate will never fall." Sofi's mood changed and stood on her feet to rant "that won't be possible, remember the croaker told me Rabi is the steel and Rubi is the iron, no matter what happens they both need each other, Rubi needs Rabi's wisdom and Rabi needs Rubi's bravery as well, there's no way I will let you separate my two jewels from each other for your own political gain." Sofi concluded and leave the yard |

The journey from the square back to the Zunga House which was the traditional ruling house if Zungeru was not long enough to chat about the incident. There was total silence between the Emir and his entourage. They were back in the house when Sofi, the only wife of the Emir together with her daughters Raba the twin sister of Rabi and their last child Ruki who is still a toddler were seated outside patiently waiting the return of her husband and his entourage. There were soldiers littered everywhere in the Great Zunga House protecting and flying the colors of Zungeru. She rushed to receive her husband while other soldiers , slaves and children bent their heads. He was welcomed warmly before he demanded for some space alone with his son Rubi and Dari. Food was served at the hall of the house where political and council meetings were always being held. "Now I don't think I want to bury those arms, we should send them to Sheki I think that would serve as a warning to him to keep off our lands. I need to show him and let him understand I am in charge here and any plans to ravage my Emirate and cause mayhem will be strongly dealt with, if he likes he may call for war as we are ever ready than ever, I suggest we send those arms to him" Rumi suggested " I think that would be a bad idea, we all know how violent this self acclaimed Emir could be. He would be ready to unleash more terror at the sight of those arms, I suggest we bury them and send a raven to him for a dialogue" said Dari. "We don't negotiate with thieves and terrorists remember!" replied Rumi "I know, but negotiating to avoid unnecessary harms on our subjects is not cowardice, it's just to avoid unwanted war" said Dari. "We have always been at war and ever ready to protect our subjects my Whip" said the Emir. " That's right but we are short of men to go into war " Dari argued . "I can call for help at court or personally meet with the Sudan to request for help " Rumi said. "A very good suggestion but we don't want to be perceived weak in the face of other Emirates, remember we have lots of enemies at court " Dari countered . "That's true father" supported Rubi. " I think it's better we cry our for help than to die in silence " advised the Emir. "You need to put your trust in me father, I will personally go into Sheki's hideout and bring you his head" Rubi offered . " You don't have the numbers" the Emir argued "last I checked, we still have about three thousand able men at the Billet and we can still recruit more " Rubi replied. "Most youths are already working for Sheki either as a soldier or spy, they have all been brainwashed" said Dari. "That's treason and it must be dealt with heavily, I suggest we write a new decree that all first male in every family should report to the Billet and anyone opposed to this shall be treated as a traitor he is, there will be heavy penalty for that" Rumi suggested. " A good idea but we must quickly act before he reacts to this morning execution, we must draft a raven to the capital to our representative in court to help us get this decree work in time " Dari concluded "As a matter of fact, I don't trust that traitor we have in court and I'm already planning on calling him back, I have my spies and heard enough of his plan to sit on my seat, we must be careful whom we deal with " Emir advised. Dumi Zunga is the representative of Zungeru at the court, an immediate brother of Emir Rumi and he was heir to him until the birth of Rabi " We all know of his attrocities at the capital as our allies have told us of his plans to succeed you instead of the rightful heir" The Whip said. " And where is the heir?" the Emir asked, "his place is here and not in the kitchen, when will he ever learn how to rule ?" Rumi fumed "Uncle needs to be careful because I won't estitate to go to the capital and bring home his head if he refused to dance to the tune of Zungeru" an angry Rubi said. "I just hope it won't come to that , but for now let's get our plans right and keep them to ourselves until we successfully call him back from the court" Rumi concluded. |
CHAPTER ONE RUMI It was a cold and cloudy morning which also marks the beginning of winter. People had gathered at the Emir's Square to witness the execution of three men caught during the act while trying to rob a local maize silo. There was excitement in the face of all to see the end of men whom have made it their duty to terrorize the Emirate of Zungeru, one of the Emirates in the Sososo Caliphate by raping wives and daughters of farmers and invading their farms while carting away their farm produces. The thieves were all dressed in greasy green attires which is commonly worn by prisoners and law offenders. The crowd was nervous and couldn't wait to see the end of some of their oppressors. Women were not allowed in such gatherings as it was against the faith of the Caliphate, murmurs could be heard between the crowd cursing and throwing banters at the thieves before an unpleasant sound loud enough to deaf the ears was heard. It was the traditional horn blown to achieve decorum amidst the gathered crowd. Finally, there was silence and the crier declared "All hail Rumi Zunga, the Emir of Zungeru, Feeder of the Caliphate and the Guardian of Protectorate. "All hail the Emir " replied the crowd with their heads bent. Rumi was dressed in a white silk garment shinning and reeking of milk and gold which was the symbol of the Zungeru Emirate. A tall and giant man in his early sixties, he also had a big turban on his head which signifies the ancient crown of the Caliphate. Riding along with him were his three sons, Rabi the eldest and the heir to him, a black skinned, tall and elegant man in his mid twenties, he was so charming and was also the crush of so many high and low born ladies of Zungeru. Behind him was his younger brother Rubi, who was also a galant man in his late teens and also a commander in the Caliphate Army a rare height to achieve at such a young age. He commanded all his father's soldiers in the Emirate. Also riding with them is Chief Dari, the Whip of Kanana, a local village in Zungeru and also a political ally of the Emir and a trusted friend of the ruling family, he was riding on the same camel with Rufi the last son of Rumi who was just nine , a very ill looking and slim boy who was short for his age and also looks malnourished but nobody dares look at him in the face and make jests. The Emir alighted from his camel and all subjects bent their heads in respect, "Bulala, hand me the sword" He commanded a squire in his army who was holding the weapon used to carry out such tasks. The blade was pure steel made from fire in the pit of hell and further forged with ice by the best blacksmith around. "We all know the law that guides us here, we also know each penalties for every crimes commited, you three have been found guilty of theft and rape and thus my judgement. In the name of Ahba Siddi, the Sudan of Sososo, the Emperor of the Caliphate and Protector of the Jalows by the word of Rumi Zunga, your rightful Emir I hereby sentence you to amputation of both arms Dari tried to encourage Rabi not to be nervous or afraid because that would piss his fearful father off. "You must not look away remember" he warned the heir. He kept his cool and did as he was told. His father took off the men's arms with each single stroke in a jiffy , there was still of blood everywhere and the cloudy morning was already waving off as the sun began to set for the day. There was wild jubilation and cheers from the crowd before the Emir ordered the men been confined for three months before releasing them to their families. Bulala picked up the arms and packed them in a cart to take away for proper burial. He was a slim and tall handsome man in his early thirties who has been a long term serving ward of Rumi before he clinched the throne of his forefathers. He was so loyal that the Emir thought it would be of great if such servant could join his army and take up arms to defend his Emirate and the Caliphate as a whole. |
