Mickael2: it wasn't up to two, and the chances came through Ndidi. One was a cross field pass that set Musa on his way(probably a Leicester routine). But then I do not understand your point Try to understand the point, so you can explain it to me. |

Icon4s: That is it.
Lets not worry abt a future goalie. Let us focus and solve the problem at hand. A goalie will eventually emerge when the time comes.
I give Rohr kudos for keeping faith with Akpeyi who in my opinion has not been exceptional but has done well as a reserve goalie.
For all those calling for Alampasu, Nwokolo and Daniel can Rohr put any of them in goal against Cameroun? No!
Akpeyi haven kept goal against Egypt in Alexandria, Algeria in Uyo and Senegal in London has proven he is no shove over.
Let us use all we have at our disposal to qualify for the WC and AFCON first then start thinking abt building for the future.
The NFF even told Rohr that there'll be no contract renewal if he fails to qualify for 2018 WC and u expect him to be planning for 2022 WC? Akpeyi looked shaky to me when I watched him play. Reports said he was jittery against Senegal. If Emma Daniel was a better choice in the Olympics, there is no way Akpeyi can be the better reserve Goalkeeper.
I am definitely not confident with him in goal. Looked amateurish in the goal conceded and showed same sign in his other game for the Super Eagles. He can pass though. |

forgiveness: I thought you said you are a coach or....
Anyway, Rohr said he considered replacing Onazi with either Ogu or Etebor.
Why did he decide to play Ogu instead of Etebor? Because he believed Ogu will give the team more chances to link up play, due to his ability to control the game with his fluid movement and sleek passing. Jamb question. |

TheSuperNerd: Nigeria friendly against Burkina Faso cancelled
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/punchng/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/21201440/Super-Eagles-training-1024x1017.jpg
The Super Eagles’ second international friendly, against Burkina Faso in London on Monday , has been called off after seven players in the Burkinabe contingent failed to secure entry visas into the United Kingdom . The other players are able to enter the UK .
Chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee, Barrister Chris Green told thenff . com in London : “ We regret to announce that the second friendly match we had scheduled for the Super Eagles as part of preparations for the remaining matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying series and the beginning of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification race would no longer take place on Monday , 27 th March 2017 .
“ The match in question is called off due to no fault of either the organisers or the Nigeria Football Federation. We will announce further plans for the Super Eagles’ preparation for these two important qualifying campaigns in due course . ”
There is no British Embassy in Ouagadougou , and officials of the Federation Burkinabe de Football had been shuttling between Accra and Ouagadougou for visa processing . FBF sources said the Embassy in Accra told them last week to proceed to Morocco ( where the Etalons played the Atlas Lions on Friday ) and that the visas would be issued there.
However, the applications were still pending at the British Embassy in Morocco as at close of work on Friday, the last working day before match day in London .
The Burkinabe Football Federation on Friday , 24 th March 2017 by 7 pm UK time telephoned the match organisers to say some of their players and officials were unable to secure entry visas into the United Kingdom and therefore would not be able to honour the match .
NFF President and CAF Executive Committee member, Amaju Pinnick was unhappy with the development but stated that the objectives of satisfying the technical team ’s desire of squaring up against tough , physical African opposition and fostering team bonding and organisation were achieved .
“ The Technical Adviser ( Gernot Rohr ) wanted to play very physical African teams, as part of the preparations for the World Cup qualifying matches against Cameroon , and we duly fulfilled that with the arrangements we made for Senegal and Burkina Faso .
“ Unfortunately , some of the Burkinabe players could not secure entry visas into the UK . It is nobody ’s fault . Our joy is that we were able to play Senegal and got a fair result with a depleted squad , and also the objectives of team bonding , team building , team discipline and further imparting the Technical Adviser ’s philosophy to the group have been well served .
“ The Technical Adviser has also been able to look at a few more options , and our strength - in - depth is looking very good . ”

goldfish80: Yobo was registered by standard liege in 1998 not 97. It was standard liege who converted him. To Nigerians he was known as a an attacker. Picture they say is worth a thousand words. I didn't photoshop this image. Kindly show me the 5th defender in this picture. A snap shot taken at 92'.
If he wasn't playing in defence when he came on, why do you still argue he was a defender in the game? As in, what clout will Yobo use and play attack in that team? Do you have an idea the kind of players we carried to Nigeria 99? If you do, you will not argue this. Haruna was the best player coming to the tournament. Considering we had young Superstars like Ronaldinho, Emmanuel Zulu, Christian Timm, Albright, Pablo, Takahara, Roque Santa Cruz, Forlan and Chevanton.
Yet You want to prove that we went to Standard Liège at that time to sign a defender to play nine, dropping Aniele along the way. It is too illogical. |

If he wasn't playing in defence when he came on, why do you still argue he was a defender in the game? As I said before, a picture of a game can not give an accurate description of what is going on on the pitch. The link I showed you is the 1997/1998 Standard Liège team list. Yobo was a Standard Liège defender. We would not call a Standard Liège defender to play attack.
That is like taking a screenshot of a midfield and if you do not see Mikel there, you will say he did not play as a midfielder.
I repeat, we would not bring a Standard Liège defender to play attack for us. |

goldfish80: Costa Rica scored a few seconds after this action. Its very clear this is a flat back four, I wonder where the "extra defender" Yobo was.
cc TheGoodJoe, SharpJoe Icon4s already explained that Yobo could go forward. During Chelsea vs Barcelona in 2009, Guus Hiddink brought in Belletti to help secure the win. He was not positionally disciplined and it caused Chelsea to lose.
So the screen shot can not give detailed explanation but the changes showed the Basic dynamics that took place.
You did not know Yobo was a Standard Liège defender. Now you know. I repeat if we needed an extra striker/forward in our squad, we would not drop Aniele to carry a defender to play attack or shore up midfield. Yobo was a Standard Liège defender 1997/1998. This was 1999. |

Icon4s: You have just painted the true unbiased picture.
There is no way Rohr will Bank on Nwokolo, Alampasu or Daniel for any of the qualifiers games this year.
Any one of them may at best come in as a 3rd choice who we know will nt even make match day squad.
All those saying Akpeyi and Ezenwa should be dropped should suggest here names of goalies that they feel are ready to face SA in June and Cameroun in August per adventure Ikeme is injured again. Drop them, drop them. But name replacement na. Nothing.
Enyeama should be allow to continue collecting his pension. That is why I felt this Friendly window was a good try out for our young goal keepers. However, Rohr had a different plan of using it to prepare his team for a physical clash against Cameroon. |

forgiveness: Oga, what was the role given to Onazi? What was the role giving to John Ogu? The point is simple. We played better when John Ogu came on because of his off the ball movements to the ball to link up play. Onazi did not do this well and that is why our link ups were bad. |

TheSuperNerd: But you really think Enyeama will make a u-turn.... it won't be bad having him back shaa ooo.... coz I am tired of all this goalkeeping crisis.
I know we have young Nwokolor and Emma Daniel.... but Rohr haven't given them their debuts yet and he wouldn't do so in a competitive fixture as crucial as the cameroun double header....
We also have Alampasu but he needs to step in his clubside....
I just hope Ikeme is fit when D-day comes calling.... We must not wait for the club sides to build our stars. If Alampasu flourishes with the Super Eagles, clubs will want him. Just as we say let them step up in their clubs, clubs are also waiting to see who pops up in National teams.
Shola Ameobi was on the bench of Newcastle. When he had an assist and goal against Italy, Alan Pardew gave him a run with the club where they went unbeaten for a while. I say we identify our best talents and help them grow. I repeat, if Alloy Agu does not know the job, he should step down. Ike Shorunmu was wonderful with young keepers like Enyeama and Ejide.
Why we sacked him, beats my imagination. |

goldfish80: Unfortunately that wasn't the case. We weren't under severe pressure from the Costa Ricans. We should have got an insurance goal but our strikers kept hitting the ball off target. Lagos fans were cheering the team on! In such a situation, do you think any coach would have decided to invite pressure on his team by switching to a 5 man defence when we were closer to score a second goal than conceeding. The Costa Ricans got a lucky break on a rare attack which resulted in Okoye bringing down an unrushing striker. Disu would have been murdered in Lagos if he played defensive football against Costa Rica. Basic tactics. Tunde Disu attacked in mass for almost Eighty minutes. No one will crucify him for trying to secure the lead. Bringing in a defender does not stop the team from attacking. It reduces gaps at the back.
This is very basic. |

Please answer the question in my previous post. There is no standard additional time. It is at the discretion of the referee. It could even be no minute. Which question do you want answered?
Attacker for defender is basic. As soon as Icon4s saw that it was in the 79th minute, you saw his reaction. Secure the lead. It is basic. |

forgiveness: This is not my first time of watching both Ogu and Onazi play for either National team or their clubs idea and I can authoritatively tell you that Onazi is three in one.
The point Michael2 is trying to make will not sell because we have seen Onazi played very well as a CMF.
We don't know the instructions given to him in that match, so we can't give a sane judgment about his game.
Besides, it was not Onazi's fault if players can't control and retain a ball before giving a good pass.
Habi, na only Onazi dey for field?
He argued that Modric doesn't tackle, I disagree with that because he does that very well.
This is just a game out of many.
John Ogu was there when Italy dominated the Midfield in a friendly.
Ain't you aware? We are talking of this game and the point Mickael2 made. It is a clear point and you are dribbling with play very well. We played better as a team when Ogu came on. Mickael2 explained the precise reason why the team played better because of his mobile movement to the ball when we were in possession.
Saying Onazi played well means you are missing the basics of the point he is making. Onazi's style of movement off the ball broke passing channels. |

goldfish80: If you were a manager with 12-15 minutes to play, will you pull off a striker and put a defender on to play a 5 man defence against a presumed weaker opponent in a home game? In such a tournament, you will not play with any team. Let alone a tough group as we were. Costa Rica were not seen as a write off, if you think so. They ended up beating the favorite team in our Group, Germany that ended up last on the log. Despite stars like Erico Kern, Andreas Voss and Christian Timm. |

goldfish80: Your 11-12 minutes does not include stoppage time. How many matches have you watched and the ref called off the game on the dot of 90'?
Yobo maybe listed as a defender at Standard liege but it's very clear the Nigerian coaches still saw him as an attacker which he was known for before signing for Standard liege and he was rightly registered by FIFA as an attacker. Just like Mikel being made to play attacking midfield for the super eagles while he played deeper for Chelsea.
Disu brought Yobo in to shore up the midfield, not to play as a defender. Does it make tactical sense to play 5 man defensive formation to protect a 1 goal lead against Costa Rica of all teams. Funny. Which sure up midfield. Ten minutes to go. Have you not heard that term before? Will you say thirteen or fifteen? It I ten minutes to go. At that time, it is very basic to remove the attacking player for a defending one to prevent a goal. You sure up the midfield when the opposing team is controlling the midfield.
This is past. Yobo was a Standard Liège defender when he was called up. It is so clear. If we needed an extra striker, We would not drop Emmanuel Aniele. |

goldfish80: When Yobo entered the pitch at 79', he had between 12-15 minutes including additional time. This is simple plus and minus. I ask again, why would the coach put on a defender for a striker, opting for a 5 man defence to secure a 1:0 lead against almighty Costa Rica? Why does any coach pull out an attacker for a defender when his side is winning by a loan goal? To secure the lead. |

The debate is in respect to why Coach Tunde Disu sent in Yobo in that game and why he pulled out Aghahowa.
We were leading 1-0 and it was between 12-11 minutes to go. It was a basic switch to deny the Costa Ricans the chance to score. Tunde Disu sent in a Standard Liège defender invited to the competition to help prevent the goal.

Abeg, who has seen Real Madrid play here and can confirm that Modric tackles wella?
Is Onazi the one that made Ahmed Musa to give wayward crosses?
Is Onazi.... Abeg, let me conclude that Onazi suppose to teach the players how to control and pass the ball. Come on. Mickael2's point is crystal clear. He pointed out that Onazi's off the ball movement when we had the ball was poor which led to our team not having a fluid build up play. He also pointed out that this was what John Ogu did that got the team playing better which was noted by lots of pundits and followers.
He even went as far as pointing at Modric's style of play which paints a clear picture.

I ask, why would Disu bring on a defender for a striker playing a 5 man defensive formation in a home game against freaking Costa Rica? Take your time and digest this. Please, the dynamics of the game changed after the Costa Ricans scored. At the 79th minute, we were to secure the win. At the 83rd minute we were going for a win. TheSuperNerd: Kayode have been missing glaring chances since u-17 and u-20 days.... so I wasn't much surprised.... he did great in other aspects shaa...
But Nacho missing not one but two very good chances.... gotme slightly upset. Coz Truth is, He is too clinical to be missing two to three chances in a row.... and his failed pass to success in the dying minutes really got me up on my feet in shock....
Now.... you all know I Love Iheanacho and will defend him to the last... but this was so unusual of him....
anyway.. he is still our best and most lethal offensive weapon.... I am sure he recognises his faux-pas moments....
And yeah... maybe Rohr told them not to be so adventurous but Echiejile normally joins the attack sometimes... against Senegal he just stucked to home... You guys made it look like Kayode was so fresh and so clean. So Nacho is getting judged on a different Yardstick compared to other players. He is human. Even Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo miss glaring chances in games. |

Disu wouldn't have played 5 at the back with 12-15 minutes to go just to contain the Costa Ricans who were not that threatening. TheSuperNerd: Sir Forgiveness..... we are on the same page.
And yes I didn't even state that It was Kayode who got a pass from Ndidi (I think?) who beautifully sprung a pass into Nacho's path for Nacho to chase and eventually used his quick feet to draw the foul from the Senegalese gk....
This is part of why I said Kayode did great.... within the limited time he featured, I was very impressed with Kayode. He should be invited for the Cameron game. He has the ginger and energy to cause mayhem.
And yes oooo.... I saw the match but from different angles.... it was really hard getting to see the whole game shaa.
And Yes within the first 20-25 mins, Leon and Troost were so unsettled.... Iwobi was giving the ball away but also grew into the game with some flashes occasionally but eventually struggled to keep up with the physical pace and nature of the game.
Onazi was our biggest fighter alongside Ndidi in that tumultuous period and he did hold sway until his unfortunate injury.... (heard he is back though).
Onazi was not overran but he wasnt finding it easy...... He did his very best and fought like the seal that he is for us... but when Ogu entered the fray, Kouyate and Gueye and even Ndoye now had a 1.92m Man mountain to contend with alongside Ndidi (1.82m).. Onazi is only about 1.73m or so...... a workaholic but couldn't just match the aerial physical prowess of the Senegalese.... Ogu and Ndidi combined their build and heights to turn the tables on the Senegalese...
Omeruo and Echiejile.... you are absolutely right.... these two added nothing to the attack... they hardly ventured forward but did their defensive duties pretty well.
And yes the person you saw showing skilss and being audacious on the ball was Iheanacho.... he did flunk about two very good chances which didn't even hit the target and also wasted a few more good moves from Iwobi, Musa and Simon when those three did step up occasionally but we can take nothing from nacho... his arrogance and dare on the ball and his ability to mix it in with Koulibaly and co shows he has grown in his adaptability to the physical aspects of the game based on his slim build... it is a good thing he got the height too.... he is about 1.83m tall or so...
Nacho was one of the players who still tried to make things happen but he did blow a lot of chances.... quite unusual of him as he is a known clinical finisher ..... hopes he redeems himself for the team in that aspect.
Success was a Beast when he came on.... he outshined even Iheanacho himself.... only Ndidi did better for the whole team alongside John Ogu but Success was like a super force.... I pray he stays fit coz he is a sure weapon for our cameroun games.
And like I said, Kayode added verve and energy to that attack.... his pass to nacho was beautiful... Success also was very influential but that was when he moved to the wings. Initially, he joined Nacho upfront playing off him kinda... or just behind him before shortly switching to the right side of attack....
So Sir Forgiveness.... we are on the same page okay....
and loollll.... who wan "bring em down"?
Abeg.... my hands no follow for that one.... loolll
Make I go manhandle theGoodJoe small... abi na SharpJoe now....
More karate kicks loading ..... Why the talk of Iheanacho missing and no talk of Kayode missing a glaring chance?
As for the full backs, may be the coach instructed them not to play in an adventurous manner to prevent gaps from counters. |

This site gave an account of the Nigeria vs Costa Rica game. They listed Yobo as a Df/ midfielder. In this particular game, he replaced Eddie Dombraye and played an advanced midfield role. Komekn was actually correct about Yobo playing as an attacking midfielder in 99. Probably after the Costa Ricans equalized, Tunde Disu instructed Yobo to join the attack, that was why you saw him attacking. At that time, we went all out in search for a winner. Also this aligns with Icon4s point that Yobo as a defender could progress down the field to join the attack. Also why he could play the right back role. |
