Family / How To Teach Respect (ages 3 To 4) by shegfun(m): 9:39pm On Jul 04, 2016
Trying to get respectful behaviour out of a three or four year old is like trying to get blood from the proverbial stone. That's due, in part, to the fact that her language skills are still developing. So, when you tell her it's bedtime, she's unlikely to say, "I'm really having fun in the bath. I wonder if I could have five more minutes of playtime?" She's more likely to splash and yell, "No!" with gleeful rebellion glittering in her eyes.
Youngsters this age are also starting to wonder what kind of power they wield within the family. They start testing a little bit. It’s perfectly normal behaviour for preschoolers to do this, and it’s just another part of their development.
Despite the need for three and four year olds to test their boundaries, you can – and should – start teaching good manners now. So don't wait to begin teaching your child the importance of respect.
Demonstrate respectful behaviour
We don't generally give our children the kind of respect that we demand from them. It can be hard to wait patiently for a child to have her say, but it's worth it. Get down on her level, look her in the eye, and let her know you're interested in what she's telling you. It's the best way to teach her to listen to you just as carefully.
Teach polite responses
Your child can show caring and respect for others through good manners. As soon as she can communicate verbally, she can learn to say "please" and "thank you." Explain that you'd rather help her when she's polite to you, and that you don't like it when she orders you around. Again, being respectful yourself works better than lecturing. Say "please" and "thank you" regularly to your child (and others), and she'll learn that these words are part of normal communication, both within your family and in public.
Don't overreact
If your preschooler calls you a "poo head," try not to get upset (after all, you know you're not a poo head). A child who wants to provoke a reaction will endure almost any unpleasantness just to get a reaction out of you. Instead, get face to face and say quietly but firmly, "We don't call each other names in our family." Then show her how to get what she wants by being respectful: "When you want me to play with you, just ask me nicely. Say, ‘Mummy, please can you come and have a tea party now.’"
Expect disagreements
Life would be much easier if our children always happily complied with our requests, but that's not human nature. Try to remember that when your youngster won't do as you ask , she isn't trying to be disrespectful – she just has a different opinion.
Teach her that she'll fare better if she can learn to stop expressing herself disrespectfully ("You never take me to the park, you bad Mummy!"wink and instead learns to put a positive spin on her requests ("Can we please go to the park after shopping?"wink.
Set limits
One of the best ways to demonstrate respect is to be both kind and firm in your discipline. Being kind shows respect for your child, and being firm shows respect for what needs to be done. So if your three or four year old
throws a fit in the supermarket, and none of your coping tactics work, what do you do? Kindly but firmly take her out to the car, and sit and read a magazine until she's done. Then you can say calmly, "Now you're ready to try again," and return to the shop. Gradually she'll learn that a temper tantrum doesn't alter the fact that the food shopping has to be done.
Talk it over later
Sometimes the best way to handle disrespectful behaviour is to discuss it with your preschooler later, when you've both had a chance to calm down. You can validate her feelings and make your point by saying, "I could tell you were very upset. What do you think caused that? What would be a more respectful way to tell me how you're feeling?" If a child knows you're really curious about her thinking, she'll probably come to the same conclusion you would.
Praise respectful behaviour
Reinforce your child’s impromptu displays of politeness as much as possible but be specific. The praise should describe the behaviour in detail. We tend to say, "good girl," "good boy," "well done." Instead, say, "Thank you for saying please when you asked for some juice," or "Thank you for waiting for your turn while the other children got their ice cream". Be explicit, and your child will quickly learn that her efforts are worthwhile and appreciated.

Travel / Airfares Soar By 57% Over New Forex Policy by shegfun(m): 5:36pm On Jul 01, 2016
Foreign travels, especially for leisure during this year’s summer, may be out of the reach of many Nigerians, as the Federal Government’s newly introduced exchange rate policy has made airfares on foreign routes to go up by at least 57 per cent, according to findings by our correspondent.

The adoption of N283/dollar as the new interbank exchange rate for the conversion of flight tickets, which are globally priced in dollars, by the Switzerland-based International Air Transport Association has made international airfares on Nigerian routes to rise considerably.

IATA is a trade association for the world’s airlines consisting of about 260 airlines represented in 117 countries and accounting for 83 per cent of the total global air traffic.

Findings from international airlines and travel agencies operating in the country revealed that the airfares might increase further as the summer peak season travels begin this week.

A return economy class ticket to Johannesburg from Lagos, which used to go for between N110,000 and N130,000, is now priced at between N170,000 and N230,000, according to information obtained from travel agents and airlines. This represents 66 per cent increase.

Airlines flown by passengers on the Lagos-Johannesburg route are South Africa Airways, Arik Air, Kenya Airways, RwandAir and Ethiopian Airlines.

Similarly, a return economy class ticket on the Lagos-London route, which used to go for between N250,000 and N450,000 depending on the class a passenger chooses to fly, is now priced between N350,000 and N750,000 for various airlines plying the route. This represents about 57.1 per cent increase in fares.

Airlines flown by Nigerians on the Lagos-London route are British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Arik Air, Medview Airlines, Emirates Airlines, Etihad Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Airfrance, Royal Air Maroc, Egypt Air and Kenya Airways.

The famous Lagos-Dubai route that formerly witnessed a return economy ticket going for between N130,000 and N180,000, now goes for between N220,000 and N320,000, depending on the carrier a passenger chooses to fly. This represents about 74.1 per cent increase.

Carriers commonly flown on the route are Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways.

According to officials of travel agencies and airlines, international airfares will rise further as the summer peak season sale will hit its peak later in July.

Apart from the increase in airfares necessitated by IATA’s decision to increase the exchange rate for the pricing of airfares from N200 to N283, top officials of foreign airlines operating in Nigeria told our correspondent that the international carriers were rushing to recoup the losses caused by the months of delay in repatriating their sales proceeds.

Over 25 foreign airlines operating in the country had about $600m stuck in Nigeria as of March 2016. This was before the Central Bank of Nigeria floated the naira and made dollars available for them to repatriate ticket sales proceeds two weeks ago.

According to air travel experts and airline officials, IATA usually adopts the CBN’s interbank official rate for member airlines to price their tickets.

They said only a margin of about N3 was usually added to the CBN interbank official exchange rate to cover for logistics costs incurred from currency movements.

A travel expert and Managing Director of Airlines Logistics Management and Support Limited, Chief John Adebanjo, said, “The interbank exchange rate moved from N197 to over N280 per dollar two Mondays ago. This is why IATA moved its exchange rate for the conversion of flights tickets from N200 per dollar to N283 per dollar for the pricing of international airfares.

“You know that airfares are priced in dollars. This amount will keep changing in line with the daily changes at the interbank forex market.”

According to the Chief Executive Officer, Gadshire Travels, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo, international airfares are usually priced in dollars and, as such, the increase in the interbank rate is expected to lead to a rise in airfares.

He believes that after the summer travels, airfares will come down.

“Moreover, as foreign airlines recover from the losses incurred from the months of delay in repatriating their ticket sales proceeds, airfares will drop; we hope,” Adebayo added.
Travel / Ethiopian Airlines Brings A350 XWB To Lagos Airport by shegfun(m): 5:30pm On Jul 01, 2016
Ethiopian Airlines has disclosed the arrival of Airbus A350 for the first time in Nigeria, the newest aircraft in the world. Lagos and Dubai are the first stations to receive the Ethiopian Airlines’ brand new aircraft, the airline stated.

It would be recalled that the airline was the first to bring Boeing B787 Dreamliner to Africa and to Lagos, and also the first airline in Africa to take delivery of Airbus A350XWB on June 28, 2016 in Toulouse, France.

The airline, in a statement, said: “Ethiopian is pleased to make all Africans proud by being the first airline in the world to fly the ultra-modern airplane in African skies. Ethiopian A350 XWB was built for passengers comfort and well-being. Wider seats in both Business and Economy classes, the lowest twin engine noise level, advanced air conditioning technology and full LED mood lighting enhance passenger comfort while reducing fatigue after a long flight.”

The Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Ato Tewolde Gebremariam said: “The fact that we are ushering in another first to Africa in a span of four years is an affirmation of our continuing pioneering role in African aviation.
“It is also a testimony of our commitment to give our passengers the very best travel experience, with the latest industry products and services. On behalf of all my colleagues at the Ethiopian family, I am delighted to see Ethiopian to continue making Africa First in Aviation Technology.”

According to the airline, all seats of the A350 XWB are fitted with the latest high-definition touchscreen personal monitors and a higher selection of movies, television series and audio channels. Inflight Wi-Fi connection will be made available on this aircraft in the future. Passengers with smart devices can connect to the world while others can use the smart individual touch screens on their seats when the internet service goes operational, it noted.

It said that the A350 XWB’s innovative technology also improves performance in operation, stating that its revolutionary airframe and simplified systems have optimized fuel burn, maintenance costs and reliability, and its engines have the lowest carbon dioxide CO2 emissions of any in the wide body category.

Ethiopian has ordered 14 Airbus A350 XWB aircraft and will continue receiving the remaining 13 soon, constantly raising the number of Airbus aircraft in the fleet ensuring the extra comfort.
