maternal, do new immigrants qualify for OSAP (The Ontario Student Assistance Program) ? If that is the case @Shokoloko can get more than 30K /year in OSAP if she is enrolled in a university or college.
The good thing about OSAP is that people can pay back just a fraction of it to the government when they are done with school.

Do you know if one can get OSAP funding for a coding bootcamp? An online coding bootcamp bloc.com

Truth!! IT is a big field but everyone can find something IT-related to do. Basic Networking (CCNA) and Systems (Windows Server/Linux) and Cloud (AWS) will be more than enough to get you started of pretty well here. And the great thing is that you can teach and learn yourself most of the entry level IT skills for absolutely free on YouTube (well you need to pay for internet access). Not all IT is programming, although that is one of the hottest skills here too. If you can learn a bit of that you are even better off because it's all about software these days...

Which one pays better networking skills or programming?

If one has to attend school or go for a course, is it possible to get a bank loan for that? And at what interest rate would that be?

People don't want to hear the truth. You try to share reality and they call you negative Nancy. I dont have power to exchange words, so I park for one side.
Another thing is this, depending on your career and experience, you may have to go back to school.

I'm all for a balanced narrative. It not rosy anywhere so its good to always prepare one's mind so that one can better withstand setbacks. Plus we could learn from other people's experiences

Hello everyone.

I have noticed that we only share our success stories here and this doesn't give a true picture of situations. We make people yet to move to think that jobs are so waiting for them and those who are here and have not gotten something or managing some small jobs to feel God has forgotten them.

I remember someone shared her struggles and challenges in getting job last year here and we all came for her. Some said there must be something she is not doing right. My humble self though still in naija at that time told her it may be village people after her. This could have stopped others from sharing theirs.

Please let's be open to sharing and encouraging people who have challenges settling in.

What prompted this post is my phone conversation with someone going through her struggles. By the time i shared mine, she was relieved. Someone else chatted me that my story encouraged her.

Mine may not be that i got that big job but that i am able to still hold it together and appreciate God for thus far He has led me.

I will share one experience that i shared with them that lifted them when i come back from chirch. Right now service mode activated. It's also one of those Sundays that we sit down to mingle and chop after service so i came with an empty stomach. There is an adage in my place that says "Open your eyes like fish". My eyes are wide open now. No dulling. shocked shocked

Looking forward to this

Good CV and LinkedIn also helps.. and is it just Calgary you have in mind

@Fusion

What kind of IT skills are most sought after?

I am actually thinking of doing either going into software development/Data Analytics. I am taking some online courses but no practical experience yet.

Turkish University, Good hype but small pay!

Imagine a University in Abuja that pays a meager sum of 80,000 naira for her employees with master degree!
That school ehn, aside from the meals, accommodation(limited) and the Abuja connection, there is nothing much to expect in terms of pay.

It is better for those interested in teaching job that reside in Abuja or have accommodation in Abuja to apply! Otherwise, one will be really strained financially.

applied for executive trainee (under electrical engineer) at dangote oil refinery company limited last year august(batch A). I went through all the five stages of the recruitment process ranging from aplitude test, group discussion, panel interview, psychometric test and medical test and by the grace of God I was able to scale through all this stages. Finally I was called to resume for the job this year, presently we are undergoing training in oil refinery operations outside the country.
My advice is that we don't need to get too anxious about this job, what I feel is the Success tips for the recruitment process of dangote oil refinery company are:
1. Group discussion, topics will range from Infrastructural development to health sector, oil Prices etc) during this interview, candidates must be calm, undominering, attentive, giving intelligent contribution).
2. Panel interview(ie one on one interview), if you are invited for this 3rd stage, make sure that you have a clear understanding of the basic concept of your discipline, the secret here is that your cv will play an important role here and it will determine the kind of questions that they will ask you, so make sure you are able to convinced your panelist of your past job experience relevant to your discipline, because most questions asked are very technical and it is discipline based. I know people will call me enemy of progress but I'm still gonna let my thoughts out.

Well done to girl. But seriously its becoming tiring to hear "distinction this distinction that". Who distinction do epp? Come to Lagos and see distinctions na. You get distinction then what? Go and queue to write aptitude tests? While I do not begrudge the people who worked hard to get this feat, I think we seriously need new paradigms of excellence. Academic Excellence has turned out not to always correlate to success in work life. Academic excellence is simply not enough. Anybody with enough self discipline and diligence can attain this feat.

Instead we need more of people who create and invent things. People who go beyond a paper testimony of their abilities and provide practical solutions to problems that affect people. You remember the Camerounian guy who invented a tool that made it possible for people to diagnose HIV by themselves? That's what I'm talking about. I could care less whether anyone had a distinction or not as long as he is able to put that brain into use that could benefit the society

Are you basing your opinion on an article or are you basing it on your own analysis as someone who understands economic fundamentals?

I would prefer to hear your viewpoint and not what an online article says. We all went to school and should be able to do our own analysis, not regurgitate a script written by a journalist somewhere.

Firstly, there is absolutely nothing wrong with basing my opinion on information gathered from subject matter experts as in the article I shared, as long I understand the argument and I find it logical. Big businesses, governments, and decision makers of all kinds do this all the time. My opinion is no less valid because it is based on LOGICAL expert opinion. Emphasis on the word "Logical".

While I am not an expert, I do have a enough understanding of economics to know that a centrally controlled economy does more harm than good in the long run as Venezuela perfectly exemplifies.

Of course devaluation leads to inflation but I think saying that the hyper inflation seen in Venezuela is purely a result of the devaluation is mischievous and misleading. The factors responsible for the country's descent into the disaster it finds itself are many, and a key one was that it kept fixing prices of goods and forex rates until it became too hard for manufacturers to stay in business. And yielding to pressure, the leadership devalued the currency in last ditch efforts to save an economy that was already tanking.

Devaluation is not a silver bullet that would clear the mess caused by poor economic policies such as artificial forex rates in one fell swoop. For it to be of any use it has to be implemented alongside other policies which allow markets to operate more freely.

Artificially low prices may please us for a while but there will be nothing but anguish and regrets in the long term when its consequences become manifest. On the other hand devaluation may cause discomfort now but this can only lead to growth and development as long as other liberal market policies are in place.

If anything, Venezuela perfectly demonstrates the folly of forex controls, price fixing, and bad governance in general. And It is in no way an example of the dangers of devaluation as you suggested.

To add to this:

The news commentary had it that at yesterday's trading, banks were just BUYING dollars and were not selling. So there was heavy dollar demand and that is why the interbank rate, which opened at N253 or so, started sliding towards N288 to $1. Bidding was going on and you know how bidding or auction processes go: the price keeps going up so that the highest bidder wins.

Had the CBN not intervened to offer dollars for sale at a rate of N280 to $1, believe you me the US Dollar would have been sold to the entity that was willing to pay N382 to $1 and we would have woken up to see rates at close to N400 to $1.

I tell you, we are yet to see the last of this and I am seriously wondering what the appropriate value of the Naira would be. I don't know if CBN will continue such interventions on a daily basis. Other central banks hardly intervene unless they have to. Bank of Japan has performed 3 interventions in the last 8 years or so.

Something will have to give. It is either the country's economic fundamentals are changed so we can become a net exporter (which means the government has to QUICKLY AND MASSIVELY invest in critical infrastructure like power to boost small scale production and manufacturing for export), or we just watch and allow the Naira to fall to the precipice.

We should look to Venezuela for serious soul-searching. That country produces crude oil like we do, wasted their oil money like we have done and had to devalue their currency. Now inflation is so high, that the people are starving and queuing for food. The situation in Venezuela is now so bad that people are breaking into stores, looting food and provisions and anything they can find to survive. The Venezuelan Army is now guarding retail establishments and escorting food trucks to distribution centres and markets. Critical situation in that country which reminds me of the ESSENCO lines we had in Nigeria in 1984/1985. Guess who was president then?

May we never get to that point ever again.

This is not true. The case with Venezuela happened because the government was controlling prices of commodities and fixing forex rates just like Buhari was doing before he saw the light. Infact, the shortage of products already started before oil prices started to drop.

So they are suffering from forex controls rather than devaluation

You can read this article for more details about the crisis

Career / Re: All Expense Paid Scholarship To Thailand Or A Job With A Top Bank? by shinaboy: 8:08pm On May 04, 2016
Hey guys,
I need your candid opinion and advice on this. I am first class graduate of Civil Engineering from one of the prestigious federal university in Nigeria.
I won all expense-paid scholarship to Thailand and also secured job with a bank.
The bank job total take home is around 198k but I am confused whether to take up the job or go for my masters degree.
I am particularly confused because of job insecurity associated with banking industry as well as deviating from my career aspiration of becoming an Engineer.
I am also concerned of not being able to secure decent job when I come back after my masters programme in Thailand.
I will be glad for your honest opinion and advice

Summary of the epistle: Take the bank job. Stay for 1 or 2 years, then apply to better schools in US. Don't waste your first class by getting an MS degree from Thailand

You see a Masters degree is good. One with a scholarship for that matter. But you really need to ask yourself some good questions before taking the leap.

Are you planning to work there after the degree? Is there opportunity to at least get some work experience?

I have never been to Asia but I have heard a lot about Malaysia and can tell you that getting the job after your degree in those South East Asian countries could be really tough. Really really tough. And this has been testified to by posters here as well.

Are you planning to come back to Nigeria?
If you are coming back to Nigeria with your Thai MSc, remember you will be facing a stiff competition with an army of other MSc Engineers like you with UK MSc degrees which will be much more reputable than yours and make it even harder for you to compete in the job market.

Your Thai education may be free, but it may not worth that much in terms of the job opportunity it can bring you since you might not be able to work in Thailand and in Nigeria I don't think anyone will be wowed by an MS degree from Thailand. Your Thai degree

I will advise you to take the bank job.

Plan to stay for 1 or 2 years.

In this time you can apply to all the engineering graduate trainee program you find. or Internships. Beg if you have to. As an engineer, work experience is much more important than a Masters degree. This is something many people realise only after finishing their Masters.

While you are at it, you can then apply for a proper Masters degree in the US, Canada, or Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia) Some of these countries give tuition free scholarships and you only have to cover living expenses. Your first class puts you at an advantage for getting funding.

The advantage of doing your masters in these countries

1. Your degree will be recognised worldwide
2. Opportunity to stay behind when you finish (In Canada you can get residency permit, in the US you can get OPT which allows you to get work experience)
3. Even if you come back to Nigeria, it will be respected by everyone and no one will question the quality of your degree.

This is my 2 cents regarding this matter.

Wish you the best.

Its sad that our media is so unprofessional. While the man may have attempted a proof, he certainly has not won the 1million dollars. A simple search of the Clay Mathematics Institute website shows that the Reinmann problem has still not been solved. And contrary to what the article claims, only one of the millenium problems have been solved not 3.

http://www.claymath.org/millennium-problems/riemann-hypothesis

That's the link showing that the problem is still unsolved.
