Business / Africar Drive-to-own Subscription Model Review: Is It Profitable For Subscribers by sholatour(m): 1:39pm On Jun 25, 2023
Africar is an online ride-hailing start-up currently operating in Ibadan.

It was officially launched in Ibadan on Thursday, 4th August 2022 by Governor Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Segun Ogunwuyi.

At launch, the company was paying salaries to drivers but adopted a subscription model in January 2023, which will enable the drivers to own the Bajaj Qute quadricycles after a certain period.

One of our own subscribed to the model from 17th February 2023 to 5th June 2023.

These are our findings:

Pros:

Creates employment and empowerment
Creates an opportunity to own a quadricycle

Cons:

Poorly maintained vehicles
Inadequately developed app

Subscription Amount

The total subscription amount is N11,700,000 (eleven million, seven hundred thousand naira) to be paid within five years.

The subscription amount includes car value (N3.5M), interest of 25% for 5 years (N4.375M), maintenance cost at N30,000 for 60 months (N1.8M) and general administration at N20,000 for 60 months (N1.2M).

Subscribers are required to pay dues of N7,500 daily for 26 days of the month plus VAT.

Other days are free when the dues are not paid except VAT.

Agreement

An agreement was signed by each subscriber and the company.

However, at the time of putting together this piece, the subscribers' copies of the agreement have not been given to them.

Patronage

The Africar app enjoys very high patronage with more than 100,000 downloads on Google Playstore.

Due to its affordable pricing, many residents of Ibadan make use of the app to move from one place to another.

App

The app is well-developed but with some inadequacies.

The driver cannot cancel a ride without getting to the location of the rider.

This wastes time and fuel on the part of the driver, which reduces his profitability since he is the one buying fuel.

Also, the app does not add a considerable amount to a rider's fare when there is an extension in time of the trip due to traffic jam or bad road.

For example, for the four months under review, an additional time of 15 minutes results in the addition of N100 to the fare while a normal trip of 15 minutes costs about N700.

Vehicle Maintenance

The company handles the maintenance of the vehicles, which is grossly inadequate.

On many occasions, parts are not available to fix issues with the vehicles.

At the time of putting together this piece, there are many broken-down vehicles in the company's workshop in Ibadan begging for repair.

One of the daughters of Late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election, Tundun, has lambasted her half-sister, Hafsat Abiola-Costello.

Hafsat alleged offence was that she was using their father’s name to campaign for Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, who is contesting the 2023 presidential election.

Last Saturday, Governor Bello made known officially that he would be contesting next year’s presidential election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In addition, he adopted ‘Hope 2023’ as his slogan, which was the same slogan MKO Abiola used in 1993.

Crime / Kyari Refuses To Eat Prison Food by sholatour(m): 3:37pm On Mar 31, 2022
Former Commander of IGP’s Intelligence Response Team, DCP Abba Kyari, has turned down food given to him in the prison by the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Punch reports that Kyari decided to go for his relative’s or wife’s food instead of the one prepared in the prison.

He was taken to Kuje prison on Monday after being denied bail by Justice Emeka Nwike of an Abuja high court.

He is standing trial, alongside four other police officers, for trafficking cocaine worth 17.55kg.

According to reports, the DCP and his co-suspects have been getting used to the prison lifestyle but Kyari did not mingle with inmates.

However, inmates are highly excited due to the presence of the DCP because some of them were investigated for different offences by the super cop.

Celebrities / You Have Never Paid House Rent – Annie Idibia Hits Back At Brother by sholatour(m): 1:50pm On Mar 31, 2022
Popular Nollywood actress and 2Baba’s wife, Annie Idibia, has replied to the allegations against her by her elder brother that she was enslaving him.

Wisdom Macaulay, Annie’s elder brother, posted a video on Wednesday via his Instagram handle claiming that Annie was enslaving him.

He claimed that he had been working for Annie but she didn’t pay his full dues but stipends.

Wisdom said, “Hello Nigerians, my name is Wisdom Macaulay, I am the elder brother of Annie Macaulay Idibia.
“I’m crying out for help at this moment because my life is been threatened. I have been working with my sister for some time, but she would never pay me my dues.

“She would rather send me N20,000 or N30,000…turn me to her slave and she can decide when she is angry to end it.
“Some weeks back, her husband sent me some money that I have been begging him for for years.

“The money wasn’t so much but I used it to settle my home. I have a wife from Imo State and I am yet to pay her bride price because I don’t have money.

“Annie is so violent, she doesn’t have peace with anyone, she fights everybody.”

Reacting to the accussation, Annie said that her brother was not responsible.

She said that her brother wanted to be her manager but she refused, and that’s what caused their disagreement.

In her words, “Oh Wizy….why big bro why…Wisdom….why all these lies against your ONLY sister…ur younger sister, all I ver do d was protect you n ur kids…

“Since we grew up bro, have u ever paid for house rent in your entire life? You live in a 3 bedroom flat fully furnished with everything u need for u n kids.

“Wisdom u have 3 kids, have u ever paid for their school fees since they were born? Your oldest 9 for 9 years since ur wife start making babies..have u ever paid for hospital bills for any of your kids? Have u ever paid school fees?

A survivor of the bomb attack on an Abuja-Kaduna train on Monday night has recounted his encounter.

Speaking with journalists on phone, he said that the earth shook at the explosion of the bomb, and the terrorists thereafter started to shoot them.

The passengers, who were about one thousand, fell on one another after the derailment of the train.

According to him, the passengers on the train who were about a thousand, fell on each other when the train derailed.

In his words, “We heard a loud bang. A bomb exploded.

“The earth shook and within the twinkle of an eye, it was gunshots everywhere.

“The terrorists surrounded the coaches and shot sporadically.

“Many were wounded. Some were hit by bullets as the terrorists closed in, trying to infiltrate the coaches.

“As the confusion heightened, many ran into the bushes on both sides of the track. It was by the will of Allah that I survived.”

In the meantime, relevant stakeholders are working together with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to track all passengers on board through the manifest.

The Kaduna State Government revealed on Tuesday that the evacuation of trapped passengers had been concluded.
