Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) can be described as an industrial computer designed to automate industrial processes.
PLCs are the brain behind almost all modern industrial automation.

The 3 basic parts of a PLC include:
1. Input module
2. CPU module
3. Output module

Sensors connects to the input module of the PLC, actuators connects to the output module of the PLC while the CPU makes decisions (based on the program written into it) and turn on or off the actuators (motor, valves etc.) connected to the output module.

The basic skills you need to acquire as regard PLC is the wiring of sensors and actuators (field devices) to the PLC, programming the PLC and troubleshooting a PLC based control system.

7 Terms Every Industrial Automation Engineer Must Know (Part 1)

Weather you are just starting out or you are an experienced industrial automation engineer, this post and subsequent posts will shed light on seven terms/devices used in the field of industrial automation.
1. Field devices
2. PLC
3. VFD
4. HMI
5. SCADA
6. DCS
7. Fieldbus

Try as much as possible to equip yourself with the practical skills required to use the above devices to automate industrial processes. There are more devices to learn. Don't stop learning.

Field devices can be refered to as sensors and actuators used in the field of industrial automation/instrumentation and control.
Sensors are basically input devices. They convert physical characteristics into electrical signal (digital or analog). Examples include limit switch, proximity sensors (capacitive, inductive & photoelectric), level transmitter, pressure transmitter etc.
Actuators are output devices. They convert electrical signal (digital or analog) into physical characteristics which can be in form of heat or motion. Examples include electric motor, heater, control valves etc.

For example, if you learn the programming part online, it will be good you connect your laptop to live PLC, download program to it and see how it works. I always like to define industrial automation as the use of control devices such as PC, PLC, DCS etc. to control industrial processes and machines to reduce or replace a human being. It's a broad field that encompasses various disciplines such as electrical/electronics, mechanical engineering & related courses.
