A 42-year-old mother of four, Joy Obioma, on Thursday urged an Igando Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve her 22-year-old marriage for what she called her husband’s lunacy. “My husband is not well, sometimes he can just go naked and start breaking bottles, looking for who to stab and everybody in the compound will be running for their dear lives. “There was a day he ran out of the house with a cutlass looking for somebody’s hand to amputate,’’ she told the court. Vanguard reports that the woman had filed a suit seeking the dissolution of her marriage to Godfrey, citing his lunatic acts. Recalling her husband’s actions, she said: “One day he (the husband) threatened to pour acid on me to disfigure me and make me less attractive. “He also threatened to burn down the house and run away.” The petitioner said she could not continue to live with her husband for the alleged signs of madness. Joy who alleged that her husband was a hemp smoker, said: “This is the first thing he takes every morning before food. “Indian hemp is my husband’s first meal before breakfast, he takes it around 5.00 a.m., and after taking it, he will start to misbehave and pounce on me. “I have been paying our rent, the children’s school fees with the support of my parents and siblings.’’ But the hubby, 49-year-old Godfrey, who denied the allegations, said nobody could separate him and his wife. “My wife and I are made from `heaven’ to be husband and wife, nobody can separate us,” he told the court.” He said he could not kill his wife but admitted threatening her with some dangerous weapons. Godfrey pleaded with the court to save the marriage, saying “I am still very much in love with her.’’ The President of the court, Mr Hakeem Oyekan, fixed judgment in the case for July 22. http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/09/my-husband-goes-mad-after-smoking-igbo-every-morning-wife-tells-court/ |

The Rivers State Police Command has debunked rumours that there was an explosion at the premises of the Federal High Court. The Command in a statement signed by its Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Mohammad said the report of the explosion was a false alarm. Mohammad explained that one of the casual security personnel in the Federal High court only raised a false alarm. It also disclosed the command had gotten a tip-off that some groups were planning to cause unrest in the state in protest of the Federal High Court ruling in Port Harcourt. The command, however, warned that any one or group caught inciting the public will be arrested and punished. The statement reads, “The Rivers State Police Command wishes to dispel the report/rumour making the rounds that there was explosion this morning at the premises of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt. “For the purpose of clarity, a security man of the court around 5:30 am observed and raised alarm that a Hilux vehicle belonging to the court and parked in the premises was on fire. “The fire minimally torched the rear tyre of the vehicle before it was extinguished. “It is, therefore, untrue that there was an explosion at the Federal High Court Port Harcourt today Thursday, 09th July, 2015. “The activities of the Federal High Court Port Harcourt went smoothly, there was no disruption or apparent threat to public peace and property. “Relatively, the Command has received intelligence that some persons are planning disturbance of public peace in reaction to the judgment of the Federal High Court Port Harcourt concerning Local Government Councils. “The Command warns that disturbance of public peace, manifest and brazens acts of threat, violence and brigandage still constitute offences under our laws. “We shall, therefore, deal decisively with any breaches of public peace in accordance with our laws. “Members of the public are advised to go about their normal businesses without fear of molestation; parents are to restrain their children/wards from acts that are capable of endangering their lives or bringing them in confrontation with the law. The police will do all it takes to protect innocent citizens from acts of violence”. http://dailypost.ng/2015/07/09/rivers-police-debunks-report-of-explosion-in-court/ |

Judge Thokozile Masipa on Thursday started handing down her judgement in the trial of Oscar Pistorius, finding him not guilty of murder. Here are some key quotes from the judge so far: On the state’s case: “The state clearly has not proved beyond reasonable doubt that the accused is guilty of premeditated murder.” “Viewed in its totality, the evidence failed to establish that the accused had the requisite intention to kill the deceased, let alone with premeditation." “The accused therefore cannot be found guilty of murder.” On Pistorius’s actions: “He took a conscious decision, he knew where he kept his firearm and he knew where his bathroom was. This is inconsistent with lack of criminal capacity.” “The intention to shoot however does not necessarily include the intention to kill.” “Clearly he did not objectively foresee this as a possibility that he would kill the person behind the door.” On Pistorius’s own testimony: “The accused was a very poor witness.” “The accused was, amongst other things an evasive witness.” “He failed to listen properly to questions put to him under cross-examination, giving the impression that he was more worried by the impact his answers might cause rather than the questions asked.” On neighbour’s testimony: “Most witnesses had their facts wrong.” “I am of the view that they failed to separate what they knew personally or what they heard from other people or what they gathered from the media.” On the relevance of documented rows and expressions of love between Pistorius and Steenkamp: “Neither the evidence of the loving relationship or a relationship turned sour can assist this court to determine whether the accused had the requisite intention to kill the deceased.” www.vanguardngr.com/2014/09/key-quotes-pistorius-ruling/ |

By Kehinde Ajose Sensuously beautiful Seyi Edun is a budding actress who has not only found her place in the world of acting but also taking giant strides as a movie producer. As new as she is on the scene, Seyi is already being regarded as one of the fast rising stars to watch out for in the Yoruba sector of Nollywood. In this chat with Potpourri, Seyi talks about her life as an actress, a producer and the concept behind her first produced movie ‘Eja Nla’. She also talks about her fondness for the pop star, D’Banj, her love life and several sundry issues: Have you always wanted to be an actress? I didn’t set out to be an actress. I joined the industry in 2009 through my younger sister who happens to be a scriptwriter. I joined the House of Wisdom caucus . I graduated in 2011 and also produced my first movie in 2011 Why are you called Eja Nla? I got the name Eja Nla from D Banj. I love D banj so much. I love his music and personality so I just decided to come up with something unique and produced a movie around that name. The name stuck ever since. What is your most challenging movie role? My most challenging movie role is in Ogo Olorun. It’s a movie where I had to speak Yoruba all through. Not just conventional Yoruba, but Yoruba rooted in proverbs and folklore. It was really challenging because I wasn’t permitted to fuse English with myYoruba. I didn’t find it easy, especially with the Yoruba proverbs. Can you date any of your colleagues? Yes and no. Yes, because you never can tell where you will find love, but presently I will say no , I can’t date any of my colleagues. What would you consider the good side and bad side of being an actress? The good side of being an actress is that you are a known face and doors open for you as a result of your fame. While the bad side involves having to deal with scandals and nosy journalists. As an actress there is no way you can prevent some bad things being writen about you. It is a sweet and sour experience. What are the challenges of being a movie producer? Movie production is not easy at all. We face challenges from monetary to logistics. At times, the timeline of production doesn’t just agree with your time-table. A film of couple of weeks may end up running into months and this may stretch the budget and make you incur more expenses. But the biggest challenge is money, getting money to bankroll your production. What will you consider as your favourite qualities in a man? I love a responsible man, God-fearing, not extremely handsome and not too ugly. I also don’t want someone who is extremely rich. I love a man with a good heart, someone who will love me for who I am. Have you ever been heartbroken? Yes I have, and I don’t want to be heartbroken anymore. Heartbreak is not a good thing. When one is heartbroken it hurts and weighs you down. You feel like your life has been thrown into a puddle and the truth is that it’s the person that one loves that breaks one’s heart. Can you quit acting for your relationship? That is why I said earlier that I love a man who understands me for who I am and my man cannot tell me to quit acting because of our relationship. What does sex means to you? Sex is a good thing, we are all sexual beings. Our sexuality is linked with the rest of our lives. It’s a sort of bond between two people, a form of expression that goes behond the ordinary intimacy shared. It’s a good thing. What is your take on sex before marriage? I think it’s an individual thing. Once you are an adult and you think you are ready, go for it. Personally, I think sex before marriage is good. Because it will make you know your partner well before going into marriage. So if there is anything you are not comfortable with, you have an ample time to correct it before actually going into the lifetime contract of marriage. Doing it before marriage also reduces adultery and fornication. It is also a good way of studying your partner before you get committed to him or her. What will you consider the sexiest part of your body? I will choose my leg as the sexiest part of my body. People often tell me I have got sexy legs, so I will choose my legs. |

The President of Economic Community of West African States Commission, Mr. Kadre Quedraogo has described the Ebola Virus Disease epidemic as a regional security issue. Speaking at the Health Partners Coordinating Committee meeting on Thursday at the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja, Mr. Quedraogo said he took the opportunity of the high-level meeting of the coordinating body for bilateral and multilateral partnerships in Nigeria to pay a courtesy visit to the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu. “I convey to the government of Nigeria the total solidarity and support of ECOWAS in this very courageous struggle against the Ebola epidemic,” he said “ECOWAS also has suffered the devastating effect of this epidemic because we lost one of our dedicated staff and we received support and assistance from the minister in handling this very sad case. “We fully appreciate what the international community, the health authority in Nigeria, the health personnel are doing. I want to pay tribute to the courage of all the people involved in managing this epidemic in Nigeria. We appreciate their actions. This has been considered as a very security issue for ECOWAS,” he added. According to a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Health Minister on Media and Communication, Dan Nwomeh the ECOWAS President said at an extraordinary meeting of ECOWAS Ministers of Health convened by President John Mahama of Ghana in his capacity as the Chairman of ECOWAS which took place in Accra on August 28, saying that the meeting took far reaching measures on the containment of Ebola in the region at the level of the Ministers of Health and also at the level of the Heads of State and Government. The priority in Accra, he noted, was to assist the affected countries in containing the epidemic. He said, “We considered the critical issue of free movement of persons and goods in the region. Since the outbreak of the disease, many member states have started closing their borders or restricting movement of persons. We pleaded against stigmatisation and condemnation and urged member states to work together in total solidarity. The spirit of oneness and solidarity is the essence of ECOWAS and we should not lose the very foundation of our community because of this epidemic.” He cautioned that isolating countries affected by the epidemic would be counter-productive as closing borders will not only undermine the essence of economic union which is the free movement of persons and goods but could also deny them the financial resources to face the epidemic. He said surveillance measures were recommended for member states to apply which include screening of passengers at exit and entry points to any country. Explaining how this will work, the ECOWAS Quedraogo said there was a proposal for each member state to select one land, sea and air entry point to be jointly monitored by member states to reassure any government of adequate measures to screen passengers before they enter any country. He emphasised that where there was need to close the border this should be preceded by consultation among countries concerned with the views of World Health Organisation and the West African Health Organisation taken into consideration to make sure that such measures are necessary. Responding, Chukwu expressed appreciation to ECOWAS for its key role in the containment activities against the EVD in Nigeria. Likening the containment efforts to waging a war, he stressed the importance of team work towards a common purpose and assured of the readiness of Nigeria to cooperate with ECOWAS in that regard. |

Manchester United can have no excuse for their awful start to the new season as it has been revealed that they boast the most expensive squad ever assembled in England. United are not even in the Champions League this season after David Moyes’ disastrous reign but the total value of their underperforming players suggests they should be at the very top of European football, not losing to MK Dons in the League Cup. [MK DONS HAMMER ABYSMAL UNITED] The Daily Mail has added up the combined transfer totals and worked out that United’s squad is the first ever to have cost in excess of £400 million - £401.2m to be precise. And, according to the paper’s figures, their nearest challengers are local rivals Manchester City, who thanks to Sheikh Mansour’s huge investment since his takeover in 2008 have assembled a squad worth a total of £344.15m. The two Manchester sides were fairly close in the spending stakes until United confirmed the signing of Angel Di Maria last week, with the Argentina star costing the club a British record £59.7m from Real Madrid. [DI MARIA JOINS UNITED IN RECORD DEAL] Di Maria was the fourth big arrival at Old Trafford this summer, following £30m Luke Shaw, £28.8m Ander Herrera and £16m Marcos Rojo, as United exercised the financial muscle generated by their huge commercial, TV and matchday income to good effect. BIG FIVE SQUADS BY TOTAL TRANSFER FEES, VIA DAILY MAIL 1. Manchester United - £401.2m 2. Manchester City - £344.15m 3. Chelsea - £341.8m 4. Liverpool - £245.8m 5. Arsenal - £209.5m United’s race to the top of the squad- value standings is no doubt a reflection of the fact that in recent years the academy graduates who cost nothing from their youth ranks have gradually retired, culminating with Ryan Giggs’ move into management this season, leaving the club relying on expensive imports. Louis van Gaal with two of his summer signings: Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw As our table below demonstrates, United have spent in excess of £10m on no less than 18 members of their current squad. (Transfer fees from 2012-13 season and before taken from Soccerbase ) Further signings could follow, with Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, AC Milan’s Nigel De Jong and Ajax star Daley Blind still linked with moves which could beat Monday night’s deadline. And with Manchester City and Chelsea's summer transfer work believed to be basically done - bar a couple of comings and goings - on September 2, United could boast a squad which costs nearly £100m more than their Premier League rivals'. The huge value of their squad only serves to further highlight their rank underperformance in the past year, and means United really have no excuse for their current failings. |

Friday's draw (29 August) takes place in Nyon, Switzerland and is scheduled to begin at 12.00pm. A live stream will be available through Uefa's official website. Overview The Europa League's reputation is often derided by supporters and overlooked by managers when considered in the grand scheme of a club's season. Away trips to the furthest corners of the continent in the group stages and inconvenient Thursday night games that threaten to disrupt the rhythm of a domestic campaign have seen the competition overlooked by many in the past but this season's edition is different. The move to ensure the winners of the 2015 Europa League qualify for next season's Champions League regardless of their domestic finish has boosted interest in the competition significantly. How will this affect teams pining for European glory? Ambition to succeed on the continent will by justly awarded for starters. In both of their triumphs in 2010 and 2012, Atletico Madrid failed to finish in the top four in Spain, finishing 9th (2010) and 5th (2012) as they failed to maintain a balance between European and domestic commitments. Their prize for such successes was another go in the same competition. Surely that success was deserving of something better? The guarantee of Champions League football for this year's winner could drastically change the perception of where the competition lies in a team's priorities. The expected is upshot is a better standard of football among a better quality of teams. That can't be a bad thing, can it? Format Forty-eight teams enter Friday's group stage draw: teams who automatically qualified last season, the play-off winners and the ten losing teams from the Uefa Champions League play-offs. The 48 teams are split into four seeding pots based on UEFA's coefficient system, with one from each drawn into the 12 groups. No side can meet another from the same league. Europa League group stage draw pots Pot 1: Sevilla, Inter, Spurs, PSV, Napoli, D Kiev, Villarreal, Fiorentina, Salzburg, Metalist, Lille, Copenhagen. Pot 2: Steaua, Liege, PAOK, Celtic, Besiktas, Wolfsburg, Brugge, Dnipro, Trabzonspor, Panathinaikos, Sparta, Gladbach Pot 3: Everton, Y Boys, D Zagreb, Zurich, Estoril, Legia, Partizan, Torino, Feyenoord, Guingamp, St Etienne, Rio Ave or D Moscow Pot 4: D Moscow or Elfsborg, Krasnodar, Rijeka, Lokeren, Asteras, Slovan Bratislava, Apollon, Qarabag, HJK, Dinamo Minsk, Aab, Astana Note: Update will be posted on this thread! |
"Lineker seal of approval" Former England striker Gary Lineker believes Roy Hodgson made the right choice in making Wayne Rooney captain of England. "It's great recognition for his efforts over many years. And he said it himself - to be considered a success he wants England to win something while he's captain," says Lineker. "That will be difficult, but looking ahead to two to four years' time, because of the nucleus of young talent we've got, he could be the head of a successful side." |
Phil McNulty BBC chief football writer in Brazil Football "Wayne Rooney's appointment as England captain is the right choice by manager Roy Hodgson - not least because of a glaring lack of obvious alternatives for a post that still retains great significance and prestige. "England's World Cup captain Steven Gerrard and deputy Frank Lampard have vacated the international stage, while the claims of goalkeeper Joe Hart and defender Gary Cahill could not come close to someone of Rooney's status and importance." |
