Try to plan well (financially) before coming here. Once you have a good financial plan, you'll enjoy being here.

Lectures have been great! It's calming knowing you can ask the most stupid questions in class without being insulted or criticized. You'll even be applauded for them often times lol, I've seen it happen in class. Just say something.

Try to come here with some food stuffs that could last you till you know your way around. If you're like me, it may take a while before you get used to the food here. Rubbish upon rubbish lol

And yeah, all these stories I hear about Indians being very smart... Hol'up please, just hol'up. The thing is they come from a better educational system, & often times, with a lot of experience. This aids their understanding of many of the lectures & materials. They've had practical experience of many of the theoretical concepts taught— It's only natural they have a head start. But trust me, they aren't all that. They are just normal people too. And with a lot of work, you can actually outsmart them if you're all out for that.

Ermm what else? Lol. I'm just observing & trying to enjoy every bit of my time here. Taking it one day at a time. I cannot come and go and kill myself. May God bless the works of our hands!

Boarded a local flight from Houston to my destination, but my luggage isn't there yet. Do I have any reasons to worry? All I have but my travel documents, are in those two boxes.

Visa approved this morning! And I honestly didn't expect how it turned out. I wasn't asked the generic "Why this school? Why this course? etc." kind of questions. Safe to say I just freestyled and didn't exactly prepare my answers. Transcript would follow soon!

Special thanks to Imperiouxx, Bigfrancis21, Sirriddy, Femi321, Dicapino, and infact everyone that's contributed to the progressiveness of this thread one way or the other. It has all begun in praise!

Modified: VISA TRANSCRIPT
I'm not much of a writer, so I'll just go straight to the point.

My interview was scheduled for 7:30 am, but I arrived the embassy around 5am. Asides being restive all through the night, I stay on the mainland and had to beat any ungoldly traffic by leaving home very early. So I left home around 4:10am.

Got to the embassy, had to chill a while before we were ushered in. After the usual perusal of documents, biometrics and all, we were ushered into the hall of judgement. The following conversation ensued between the VO and I:

VO: What state in the USA are you heading to?
Me: Texas
VO: I see you're going to study. What course?
Me: Environmental Engineering
VO: Who's sponsoring your trip?
Me: I have a scholarship from the FG of Nigeria, with a legal agreement I'll be assuming an academic position upon completion of studies.
VO: So why do you have your Uncle as your sponsor on your I-20?
Me: I hadn't been awarded the scholarship when I requested for my I-20. I was going to pursue my plans even without a scholarship, with the help of my Uncle.
VO: How did you get this scholarship?
Me: I applied, participated in an exam, and I made it to the top 4 of my state. Top 4 scorers were chosen from each state.
VO: How many people were awarded this scholarship?
Me: 175
VO: So they are all coming to the US? (By this time, I swear I was already tired)
Me: Ofcourse not. Some are heading to Australia, Canada, UK and other countries.
VO: What does your Uncle do?
Me: He owns a construction firm.
VO: Can I see your award letter?
Me: [hands over award letter]
VO: [Starts typing expeditiously, while perusing my award letter]
VO: What did your study in your undergraduate?
Me: Civil Engineering
VO: What school?
Me: FUNAAB
VO: Did you write any standardized tests?
Me: [Bleep No! How would I have been admitted without writing any test? I said in my mind lol] Yes, GRE and TOEFL.
VO: Okay, you've been issued your visa. Please keep this, you'll be needing it at the Port of Entry. Do have a safe trip. Next!
Me: [walks out laboriously]

Nothing like "why this school," and those sort of questions I had already prepared cookie-cutter answers to.

All in all, keep being persistent and believing in God! I started registering for exams with just about 200k in my account. It would have been being fully funded or nothing. I couldn't apply to many schools cos I ran out of money; I applied to just two—both of which I couldn't get full funding from. But then, God came through with a generous local scholarship.

Never stop believing! I pray that the Lord crowns all of our efforts, in Jesus name. To be successful isn't a day's job.

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Undecided Over Two Jobs Offers!!! Please Advice by SilentPistol: 12:39pm On Jul 13, 2016
victree007:
Hello everyone, My name is Victory and I don't know how to tell you this or what format to follow

On 31st May this year, a day after my birthday, I resigned from a mining company where I was working in Jos because working terms and conditions no longer gave me what I wanted in a job coupled with the fact that I was fed up with ONE MAN BUSINESS and promised myself not to work with any again.

Immediately I got home that day, I was excited to receive a mail inviting me for an interview with a multinational organization. To cut the long story short, I ended up doing interviews with three different companies within two weeks in Lagos and I resumed with one of them just last week.
Where I am now the pay is 100k per month for my position, accommodation, staff bus to and fro work daily with no other benefits for now, it is a one man business that is just starting up in Abeokuta and I am enjoying working with the company though the job is tasking and demanding but I am learning daily...

Just yesterday, one of the three companies called for me to resume this Friday in Lagos...Please find some benefits that come with the position below as I was told during the interview and from a source within the firm. Though the start up pay is half what I am getting in Abeokuta;
1. PENSION
2. INSURANCE
3. 13TH MONTH
4. TRAINING AND RETRAINING
5. CAREER GROWTH
6. JOB SECURITY
7. EXPOSURE
ABOVE ALL, IT IS A MULTINATIONAL ORGANIZATION

Now I have between now and tomorrow Thursday to either resign in Abeokuta or reject the offer in Lagos
Please I would like for moderators to help move this post to where it can be seen quickly for advise, thank you

A 'multinational' offering to pay 50K as start up in an expensive city like Lagos is probably not worth the stress, but what do I know? Not to talk of how expensive transportation & feeding are now. Perhaps if you state the name of the company, it would help people in giving you better suggestions.

If I were you though, I think I'll stick with the job at Abeokuta, while still searching for better opportunities assiduously. So I'll advise same for a few reasons:

First, Abeokuta is a cheaper city to live in compared to Lagos. You can save more living there. Even if things don't end up as auspicious as you'd expected, you could use savings accrued to invest in profitable ventures.

Also, being a precocious company, you stand a better chance to make notable contributions to organisational development—assuming your current employer is reasonable.

The ball is in your court anyway. Regardless your final resolve, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours!

Am glad you said 'based on people's comments about me' I owe nobody no fu*ckin explanation here. Yes,my classes starts August 15th,but am going to personally resume classes on the 22nd. I was not being delusional when I said September reason because I thought I was gonna arrive the States September due to the confusion about my business visa and F1 visa. And to answer your final question,am in the States now. I presented my F1 visa, and my B1 was cancelled.

I hope I am not about to reopen a healing wound but I don't know why I feel angelapinkytoes never meant to truly scam anybody. I know most of my pals here: halidaf, bobority, gunther, slimmy, oludare, imperioux et al will definitely disagree with me on this but I think I'm a good judge of character. She seemed a bit flamboyant and perhaps was playing to the gallery a bit too much but I strongly doubt she is a scammer. Except she's of the femme fatale nature. Oh well, maybe I neva jam sha.
