Family / Man Climbs 19-storey Building To Save His Mother From Fire (video) by silverbirdng(f): 7:39pm On Jul 21, 2019
A man shocked onlookers, after he scaled a 19-storey building in the suburb of West Powelton, Philadelphia, to save his bedridden mother from fire.

The dramatic scene came, after a fire which is thought to have started in a rubbish chute, broke out at around 9.30pm on Thursday. The blaze was however under control by 10.56pm.

“SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) buses were on location and we put some of the evacuees on the buses where the air conditioning was on in the buses so SEPTA helped us out,” said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

“There was a recreation centre in a nearby building that had air conditioning to house individuals that were temporarily evacuated.
Speaking to ABC News after showing off his bravery, 35-year-old Jermaine narrated how he got a call from his sister who told him that their mother, 65-year-old Sheila, who is bed-ridden, couldn’t get out of her 15th floor apartment. The roofer and construction worker alleged that after he got to the apartment, the police didn't allow him to pass through the front door.

"They said the elevators are not working. I said, 'No problem. I'll take the steps. I just want to make sure my mother- my mother is sick, she's bed-ridden. So I need to get up there. They were like, 'We can't let you in.' I took it upon myself because that's my mother. There's no limits. That's my mother,

Jermaine was actually using a pair of crutches as he’d cracked his hip when he fell on a set of stairs earlier that day, but according to him, his adrenaline took over after he took the decision of climbing the building to save his mother.

"All for my mom's safety, period. I wasn't worried about mine at all. She can't get out of the bed or walk around so if there's a fire she needs help out," he said.

The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) were right on time to stop Timi Dakolo and his wife, Busola from being taken by armed policemen to Abuja over allegations of criminal conspiracy, falsehood, mischief and threat to life.

Timi Dakolo had shared the letter of 'invitation for questioning' which according to him, came after Pastor Fatoyinbo allegedly bribed investigating officials to delay summons, and also pushed for the case to be transferred to Abuja.

However the armed policemen were stopped from taking away the singer and his wife by RRS officers. End SARS campaigner, Segun Awosanya tweeted that the policemen sent to "abduct" Timi Dakolo and Busola, are now under investigation. See his tweets;

Crime / Identity Of Man Who Climbed Aircraft At Lagos Airport, Revealed by silverbirdng(f): 6:52pm On Jul 20, 2019
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has revealed the identity of the man who climbed on the wings of an Azman Aircraft, waiting for clearance from Air Traffic Controllers at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The man said to be a Nigerian, was identified as Mr Usman Adamu and he reportedly lives in Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State.

Breifing journalists on Saturday in Kano, the Managing Director, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Captain Rabiu Yadudu said the stowaway is currently in custody of the Airport Police Command over the incident considered a serious security breach, and also led to the indefinite suspension of four Aviation Security unit heads.

“The suspect identified as Usman Adamu, a Nigerien in origin and who claimed to reside in Iyana Ipaja, on the 19th of July was reported to have appeared at the domestic end of the taxiway and attempted to gain access to the aircraft while it was taxying to the holding point.

“He was apprehended, detained and is currently with the Airport police command as our investigation progresses.

“The authority considers this incident a serious security breach and an air sight incursion, this is unfortunate and embarrassing.”

Politics / I Refused To Share Money With People That Brought Me To Power - Obaseki (video) by silverbirdng(f): 6:19pm On Jul 20, 2019
For months, the fight between APC Chieftains in Edo state has been on headlines and Governor Obaseki is finally speaking up over it.
The Edo State Governor while hosting members of the Benin Community resident in the Federal Capital Territory at Edo State Lodge, Abuja, on Friday, hinged the crisis rocking the state's house of assembly on his refusal to share public funds with private individuals who claimed they brought him into power.
He further lamented that he has not been allowed to function as a Governor since elected, as decisions are taken on his behalf without notifying him.
He said “I have endured so much as a Governor. As a governor have not been able to even nominate somebody for a federal appointment and mean while federal appointment are made everyday. I cant be governor and not a governor, I should be able to make decisions which are in my view and in the best interest of Edo State. If your children are fighting and you cannot settle them, then what authority do you have."

He further alleged that the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole was not interested in the peace of the state.

“The only thing they have said is that I refused to share money; I am not taking care of the people who brought me into office. I said 300,000 Edo people voted for me to be governor; if I do for the people, everybody will benefit.

“Is it not ironic that in a state where we have one party ruling, and that has all the 24 seats in the House of Assembly, we have this kind of a crisis?

“At the centre, we have our own person who is supposed to superintend (over) this (matter). So, if your children are fighting and you cannot come and settle them, then what authority do you have to even be a father?”

“I will not allow Edo State to be a pawn in anybody’s political chess game. For me, I keep asking the question, what have I done wrong? What is my offence that they want to now get people to come and create confusion in the state?”

Politics / Senator Elisa Abbo Allegedly In Out-of-court Settlement Negotiation With Lady by silverbirdng(f): 7:37am On Jul 18, 2019
Senator Elisha Abbo, the Adawama born lawmaker is allegedly in an out-of-court settlement negotiation with the lady he assaulted, as confirmed by insiders.

We reported yesterday that Bibra Warmate, the shop attendant and nursing mother assaulted by Senator Elisha Abbo in the viral video failed to appear before the Senate ad hoc committee investigating the incident. When contacted by Punch, she also failed to give her reason for being absent.
Though top sources claimed that an out-of-court settlement negotiation is ongoing between Senator Abbo and Warmate, her lawyer denied the claim stating that they have a lawsuit against the lawmaker and will be going ahead with it.

“I can categorically tell you that there is no such negotiation and that the matter is in court. We have an action against him (Abbo) in court. We are suing him" the lawyer said.

This is coming after Chairman of senate ad committee that was set up to look into the incident, Senator Sam Egwu, requested for more time to conclude the investigation and report back to the National Assembly.

Politics / Kano State Election Tribunal Rejects Pdp’s Plea To Amend Names Of Witnesses by silverbirdng(f): 7:38am On Jul 17, 2019
The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Kano on Tuesday dismissed a prayer by Abba Kabir-Yusuf, PDP governorship candidate seeking to amend the names of witnesses earlier presented alongside the petition.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Kabir-Yusuf, are challenging the declaration of Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the March 23, governorship election in Kano state. In his submission, the lead counsel of Kabir-Yusuf, Asiwaju Adeboyega Awomolo said he brought the petition to correct some errors made on the names of their witnesses earlier filed on April 11, 2019.

He maintained that his application would not amend or alter the statement of fact but to sustain the ground prayer of their petition and urged the tribunal to grant the application. While objecting to the prayer, Counsels to both respondents, Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and INEC, Offiong Offiong (SAN) and Ahmad Raji (SAN) noted that the prayer to amend the names of the witnesses by the petitioner contravened the Electoral Act.
The counsel further argued that election petition should be filed accompanied with names, details and oath of the petition. In her ruling, the Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Halima Shamaki dismissed the application by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Shamaki said Paragraph 4 and 5 of the first schedules of the Electoral Act provided that all election petitions should be accompanied with details of the witnesses.

The tribunal chairman also noted that petitioner should be expected to file his petition three weeks after declaration of election result. She said since the petitioner had filed his petition in the last three months, she had no jurisdiction to grant the application of the PDP. Shamaki, therefore, adjourned the sitting to the July 22 for the commencement of hearing.

No fewer than 785 witnesses are expected to appear before the election tribunal to testify for APC and PDP on the conduct of the March 2019, governorship election in the state.

Politics / Declare State Of Emergency On Security – PDP Tells President Buhari by silverbirdng(f): 7:16am On Jul 17, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party has called on President Buhari to declare a state of emergency on security in order to address insecurity situation in the country.

The PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, made the appeal at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja while reacting to the open letter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to President Buhari. Secondus said the advice was necessary looking at the increasing rate of cases of killing and kidnapping across the country.

He recalled the killing of the then female international aide worker and the recent killing of Funke Olakunrin daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere. Secondus said that the worsen security situation between April and now had made concerned patriotic leaders to voice out their concerns.

These leaders, according to him, include Mr Obasanjo; the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan; Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka; and former governor of old Kaduna State, Balarabe Musa, among others. Secondus described Mr Obasanjo’s letter as truth that could not be run away from, if the insecurity situation must be addressed.

“Former President Obasanjo in a timely tirade to the President on Monday raised all the issues and properly situated the security position in the country. He went further to highlight the implications of the current state of the nation and where we are headed if urgent steps are not taken. “As National Chairman of the main opposition party I cannot agree less with the former President.

“I cannot agree less with him where he said among other things that Quote. The main issue, if I may dare say, is poor management or mismanagement of diversity which, on the other hand, is one of our greatest and most important assets…”.

Secondus said the PDP whole-heatedly associates itself with the position of the patriotic Nigerians. “The PDP urges President Buhari to respond appropriately to their timely advisories by declaring state of emergency on security in the country and go further urgently to address the issues raised in Obasanjo’s letter.
Secondus said the killing of Mrs Olakunrin was the high point of murdering of innocent Nigerians across the land. “It certainly cannot be well for a nation that creates an ugly situation where a 94-year-old Nationalist would be burying her 58-year-old daughter. “This certainly is not Nigeria of our dream.”

Politics / PDP Reacts To Obasanjo’s Open Letter, Warns Buhari by silverbirdng(f): 7:07am On Jul 16, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on the insecurity has vindicated the party’s position.

Obasanjo, on Monday in another open letter to President Buhari, lamented about the state of the nation, while calling for urgent actions to tackle Nigeria’s challenges.

Reacting, the PDP in a statement signed by Kola Ologbodiyan National Publicity Secretary, on Monday, described Obasanjo’s open letter as patriotic and prove that President Buhari has failed as the nation’s chief security officer.

The statement read: “The party notes that President Obasanjo’s letter reechoes its numerous caution against the violations, insensitivity, impunity, vindictiveness, divisiveness, intolerance and dangerous sectionalism that characterize the Buhari administration and which are jeopardizing our national unity.

“The PDP urges President Buhari to read between the lines and listen to the voice of reason from well-meaning Nigerians at this moment.

“Our party is deeply worried that our nation, which grew in leaps and bounds in all sectors before the All Progressives Congress (APC) took over in 2015, is now dangerously sliding on all fronts under President Buhari, who has shown crass incompetence in managing our national affairs.

“The PDP maintains that had President Buhari heed wise counsel to rejig his parade and respect the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians in the national interest, our nation would not have been on this dangerous bend.

“The fact remains that President Buhari has not demonstrated the capacity to lead a nation as complex as our Nigeria. Events have shown that he cannot handle our diversities and ensure a united and equitable country that guarantees fairness, justice and space to all citizens without fear or favour.

“The PDP, therefore, counsels President Buhari to listen to the pulse of our nation; accept his failure and seek help from other well-meaning Nigerians so as to take back our nation from this imminent precipice.

“The party also calls on all Nigerians across the divides, irrespective of creed, ethnicity and political leaning, to close ranks, eschew all primordial and parochial interests and work together for the stability of our dear nation.”

Politics / Nigeria Will No Longer Condone Xenophobic Attacks On Its Citizens - Ahmad Lawan by silverbirdng(f): 9:17pm On Jul 15, 2019
Senate president Ahmad Lawan on Monday condemned the continuous killings of Nigerians in South Africa, warning that further attacks on Nigerians would no longer be condoned.

Lawan expressed concern that about 118 Nigerians had so far lost their lives in different attacks over the years, out of which 13 were by the South African Police. A statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa said Lawan made this known when he hosted the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Bobby Moroe.

Moroe and his delegation paid the visit to brief the Senate leadership on his government’s investigations to unravel the causes of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and steps being taken to stop such. The meeting, according to Lawan became pertinent considering the incessant attacks on Nigerians residing across cities in South Africa.

He said “we in the parliament must speak and prevent any further killings. These killings must stop. This is the era of social media where the corpse of a victim may spark violence that may go beyond the control of the government.

“The South African government must as a matter of urgency do whatever it takes to protect the lives and property of Nigerians living there, just as Nigerian government remain committed to the safety of South Africans residing here and their investments.

I believe we have faced enough, we will no longer take it anymore. We want to write the names of Nigerians killed, and the South African parliament must act fast to put a stop to this menace. Over the years, 118 Nigerians have been killed, while 13 out of these were killed by South African Police.”

While commending the High Commissioner for the updates, Lawan noted that “the update on the cause of late Mrs. Chukwu’s death is heartwarming. It is a sign that something has been done in this regards.”
