Politics / Yahaya Abdullahi: It Is An Insult To Say Senators Shouldn’t Spend N5.5bn On Cars by silverbirdng(f): 9:59am On Sep 19, 2019
Public outcry on N5.5bn SUVs, an insult –Senate

The Senate, on Wednesday, described the public condemnation of its planned purchase of Sport Utility Vehicles amounting to N5.5bn for the senators as an insult.

The Leader of the Senate, Yahaya Abdullahi, stated this in an interview with journalists in his office in Abuja.

Abdullahi said the status of a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is not undeserving of an SUV.

He said each of the 109 senators in the upper chamber would get one SUV, which would be paid for at the end of their four-year legislative tenure.

He said the burden on the shoulders of the senator was not a mean task and that an SUV for their work was not too much.

The Senate Leader said, “What is the problem there? It is an insult to say that a senator of the Federal Republic cannot ride a jeep in Nigeria. It is an insult. The N5.5bn is from the National Assembly fund and it is budgeted for every year, which they will pay back at the end of the tenure.

“I was a permanent secretary. I know what ministers get; we cannot even compare ourselves to ministers because we are higher than the minister(s). For you to say that a senator of the Federal Republic cannot drive a jeep today — come on, that is an insult.

“Go and tell the people that the work that we do is more than the work of ministers. The weight that is on me today; there is no minister of the Federal Republic that has it.”

Abdullahi said the collapse of the local government areas across the country had placed a burden on senators who “carry loads outside their purview.”

Politics / Fayose’s Govt Left N57b Unpaid Workers’ Salaries, Pension Arrears, Says Fayemi by silverbirdng(f): 7:08am On Sep 18, 2019
FEkiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi said on Tuesday that the workers in the state civil service were being owed N57billion as arrears of unpaid salaries and emoluments.

The governor said this at a meeting he had with the civil servants as well as a cross-section of labour leaders at the Government House, Ado- Ekiti.

He said that his administration was making frantic efforts to defray the backlogs which he said would be done in phases.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fayemi claimed the trend was caused by irregular payments of salaries and pensions by the immediate past administration of Mr. Ayodele Fayose.

He said the arrears covered outstanding salaries, pensions, promotion arrears, leave bonuses and other emoluments from 2014 till October 2018 when he assumed office.

The governor also said he was not part of the people that were opposed to local government autonomy.

He said the local governments in the state were currently being given unfettered access to administer their own funds without interference from his government.

He said he would honour his earlier pledge to pay all the outstanding workers’ benefits.

He clarified that some would be given immediate attention, while some would be defrayed by instalment.

He said: “It is sad to reel out such a homongous figure, because it can create panic for you and I.

Read Also: Fayemi urged to implement erosion control master plan to curb flooding
“ But let me say that we cannot pay everything in one fell swoop, but the 2019 promotion arrears will be given immediate attention while others will be defrayed by instalment.

“ It becomes difficult to pay once because Ekiti gets a little above N5billion monthly, with the state getting like N3billion, while the local governments receive little above N2billion monthly “, he said.

On the issue of local government autonomy, Fayemi said he was never opposed to the idea of giving financial independence to the third tier of government, being the closest to the grassroots.

“But today, we have less than 500 to manage 22 health facilities across the state.

“The governor must do something about this,” he said.

Some of the other labour union leaders in the state that attended the meeting include: Kolapo Olatunde of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Sola Adigun of the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

They also pleaded that issues that had to do with the benefits of workers must be given utmost priority.

They urged the governor to use his connection as the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to fast track the implementation of the new minimum wage for workers. He said.

Politics / Tribunal Judgement: Buhari in Hot sit As PDP Govs Back Appeal At Supreme Court by silverbirdng(f): 10:51am On Sep 16, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum has expressed support for the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate in the February 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar to appeal to the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal at the Supreme Court.

The tribunal had upheld the victory of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, President Muhammadu
Buhari.

The Chairman of the Forum, Mr Seriake Dickson, on behalf of his colleague-members in a statement on Sunday also said the judgement stood justice on its head.

Dickson who is also the Governor of Bayelsa State said that it will also send wrong signals to the teeming youths and lay a faulty moral foundation for generations of Nigerians yet unborn.

He said, “After painstakingly and prudently understudying line after line of the judgement, several holes were picked and
countless anomalies identified by us. We would be doing a greater disservice and moral injustice to our party, our democracy and
Nigerians in general if we turn blind eyes, swallow such bile and applaud that rape of justice.

“The judgement to say the least has further painted our judiciary with darker colours, only this time around with a never-before-seen
blemished coat of tar. However, we are hopeful that the Supreme Court will rewrite that history by ensuring that such stains and tar are removed from our judicial archives.”

He added, “The apex court should know that its integrity is at stake and in order to avoid it been shredded to particles, must employ all known technicalities to save our nation and the future of Nigerians yet unborn from development that may further make us a perpetual laughing stock amongst the comity of nations. And Nigerians are very hopeful that these wrongs will be righted.

“Without any iota of trepidation, it is most paramount for us to once more restate and reconfirm our undiluted loyalty, deserving support and maximum commitment to our great party and the Atiku-Obi Presidential ticket. This is our stand, now and in the future. Posterity would judge us harshly if we did otherwise.”

Politics / Why I’m Yet To Form My Cabinet, By Ganduje by silverbirdng(f): 4:32pm On Sep 14, 2019
Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has explained the delay in constituting his cabinet four months after his inauguration.

He said he was taking his time to carry along all the different parties and groups that contributed to his second term mandate.

The Nation gathered that the yet-to-be constituted cabinet could be as a result of Ganduje’s magnanimity to compensate all shades of different parties and groups.

In his first term, the governor constituted his cabinet within three weeks.

However, Ganduje explained that the process of nominating Commissioners in his second term is taking a lot longer time, due to the emergence of different forces that supported him during the 2019 election.

In a foreign Hausa Radio, monitored in Kano, the governor promised to unveil the names of the prospective Commissioners soonest.

“Some of my former commissioners will be re-nominated while others will not.

“However, those that are not returning, as commissioners will still be accommodated in the government,” he said.

To this end, it was learnt that political considerations appeared to have made it difficult for the governor to form a cabinet.

In 2015, Ganduje ran for election as a candidate of the Kwankwasiyya group within the APC.

It was therefore easy for the group to agree on commissioner- nominees even before Ganduje took the oath of office.

However in 2019, running as the head of his own Gandujiyya faction, Ganduje needed the support of other political blocs to defeat the Kwankwasiyya candidate after the group decamped to the opposition PDP.

Among the frontline politicians, who threw their weight behind Ganduje’s ambition include former Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau; former deputy governor Prof Hafiz Abubakar and a host of some notable Kwankwasiyya and PDP members who left in protest against the alleged high-handedness of the group leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Politics / Ganduje Emerges 'Best Governor In 100 Days In Office' By ADAN by silverbirdng(f): 4:40pm On Sep 08, 2019
An African Group of Democrats under the aegis of African Democracy Assessment Network (ADAN) based in Dakar, Senegal, has selected Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano state to be honoured with an award of “Best Governor in 100 Days in office”.

This is contained in a statement signed by Abba Anwar, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Ganduje and issued to journalists on Sunday in Kano.

“Barely 24 hours after the traditional 100 days in office for governors who were inaugurated on May 29, an African group of democrats under the auspices of African Democracy Assessment Network (ADAN), has selected Kano State governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, for an award.

“After assessing what was achieved by all the governors in the last 100 days of their stewardship, Kano state governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has been selected by the Group to be awarded “Best Governor In 100 Days,” he said.

Anwar said that the group, in a letter sent to the governor and signed by the West African Regional Coordinator, Mr Samson Theodore, looked at the major sectors that were likely to improve the living standards of the majority of people in the state as against the few individuals before selecting Ganduje for the award.

“We carefully selected these areas, education, health agriculture, security, economy, infrastructural development and politics, with a concentration on the supremacy of political party or parties as the case may be.

Anwar quoted the group in the letter titled “Why Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje Picks First Position in 100 Days in Office” as saying that Ganduje was selected after the Mid-Year Democracy Review Meeting of the group.

“Your intention to establish the College of Education, (Technical) for Women is considered by our panel of research, as genuine policy pronouncement. This will also go a long way in boosting Girl child education in the state.

“Ganduje made a clear pronouncement that both basic and secondary education will be free and compulsory.

“We are amazed that your policy pronouncement on free and compulsory basic and secondary education has become a reality.”

Politics / Oshiomhole: Obaseki Sacked The Only Commissioner I Nominated In His Cabinet by silverbirdng(f): 4:32pm On Sep 08, 2019
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, says the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, sacked the only commissioner he nominated into his cabinet.

Oshiomhole, who is the immediate past governor of Edo State, said this during an interview on Channels Television on Saturday.

He said the irony was that Obaseki took the drastic action after a reconciliatory meeting which was attended by some APC stalwarts including Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.

The APC chairman said, “We have no argument over money or appointment… In the meeting we held with four governors, including Governor Bagudu, I asked the governor, how many commissioners I nominated into his cabinet. He agreed that I only nominated one person out of more than 20 commissioners.

“Not many Nigerians will believe that because for me I was out of government and I have convinced myself that the day I step out of government, that is it. After that first meeting, the governor decided to remove that one commissioner along with seven others. But that is not my business.”

Oshiomhole, who has been at loggerheads with his successor in the last couple of months, said he was also disturbed that Obaseki decided to abandon some of his projects.

The former, however, assured his successor that he was not under any threat.

He said, “The governor can never tell you that I have interfered in his choice of projects and so on. The only thing I feel a bit worried about is that some of the projects we started together have been abandoned. There is no way to solve disagreements without talking to the aggrieved parties.

“Let me assure you. This governor is not under threat. It is those who make money from crisis, those I call merchants of confusion, who can tell the governor that he wants to be impeached. What will I gain if Godwin does not run a second term?”

Obaseki and Oshiomhole’s feud deepened in June when the former issued a letter of proclamation for the inauguration of the House of Assembly.

The inauguration subsequently took place at night in the absence of lawmakers loyal to Oshiomhole, thereby making it possible for those loyal to Obaseki to emerge as presiding officers of the Assembly.

The move was said to have infuriated Oshiomhole and the APC leadership, causing the National Assembly to threaten to take over the state legislature.

Oshiomhole’s brother, Seidu, was also violently attacked during the crisis that ensued.

Sports / Barcelona Humiliate Real Madrid In A 9-1 Goal Thriller Super El'cassico by silverbirdng(f): 1:20pm On Sep 08, 2019
Barcelona stroll past Real Madrid female team (CD Tacon) on Saturday afternoon with a humiliating scoreline of 9-1 in what was billed as women’s football’s first clasico at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

There were 5,413 in attendance to watch the mauling, as the Blaugranas showed just how far ahead they are of Real Madrid’s venture into the world of women’s football, though their name is yet to be put onto the club.

It barely took eight minutes for the deadlock to be broken. Alexia Putellas, acting as captain, pounced on an error to open the scoring. Tacon then enjoyed 20 minutes’ peace before Aitana Bonmati added a second, with Lucia Suarez Garcia and Mariona Caldentey making it four before half time.

Jessica Martinez did reduce the deficit by scoring first after the break, but normal service resumed just six minutes later when Bonmati got her second on the hour mark. Caroline Graham Hansen made it six inside the final 20 minutes and Jennifer Hermoso then scored twice in three minutes before completing her hat-trick in stoppage time.
