Investment / Re: Stockbroker Duped Me: How Do I Seek Redress? by SimonTemp(m): 3:47pm On Jun 18, 2012
bodik: Please any other advice
Thanks

There is a department in the Nigerian Stock Exchange set up especially for this purpose. I think it is called BDR (broker, dealer relationship).

Go to the NSE building on Customs street, off Broad Street, ask for the department and file a complaint.

Some brokers get their licenses suspended because of acts like this.

Car Talk / Re: LIST OF GOOD AUTO WORKSHOPS IN NIGERIA by SimonTemp(m): 2:08pm On May 03, 2012
cecegorz:

I also had a terrible experience with these guys, for the fact that their boss presents automedics program on the radio, which i really enjoy as it is educative, i decided to visit them for a professional touch on my car.
They did a normal servicing for me sometime ago, and by the time i wanted to drive out the next morning, i saw that the whole oil in the engine was on the floor, i called them and they said i should bring it back, i bought a gallon, filled it, and prayed it will take me there, hopefully i arrived and they replaced the supposedly oil filter they installed initially.

You can't believe the next day, the same thing happened!!! All the oil leaked away!
I was so furious, how can supposed professionals be using fake oil filter, as cheap as that!
i called a mechanic on my street, and the guy said i should give him 1.5k and he got me another oil filter, changed it and i never saw a single drop of leakage.

I noticed that their boss is not always around at the work shop, probably, he needs to be doing more oversight functions on what his wards are doing there.

This is the 3rd Complaint about Automedics. I'm concerned because I initially recommended them. Can I suggest you call one of top guys on 08080806686.

Tell him about your experience, even if you don't plan to go there again. And let him know that more people are complaining about their services.

bravedude: @Payless,if i disconnect and reconnect the battery, what happens to the Navigation if requested for code,i don't think i know the code. All this was a result of leakage from the oil filter after servicing in one of the soul call good auto workshop on this chat forum

Workshop/Mechanic:
Automedics

Location:
LTV 8 Compound, Alausa, Ikeja)

I don't believe in any of this mech auto workshop anymore.Roadside mechanic preferable.

Completely disconnect your battery for 3 hours. Then, reconnect it and see if that works for you. I did that on my Jeep cherokee few months ago.

For those that have tried Automedics based on the recommendation in my first post and have one issue or the other with them, please call:
08080806686 and ask to speak with Mr. Gbola Oba.

I mentioned your complaints to him and he is quite concerned.

royalflame: I was at this workshop inside LTV 8 today after reading the post from SimonTemp, I was grossly disappointed at the quality and the manner with which they do business.

1. They very much believe that when they tell you something, you must not bear your own opinion especially if it is different from theirs.
2. They become agressive and insultive when your opinion differs from theirs.
3. They are not organised. When and engineer tells you to call back at 2pm and then you call at 2pm, the next engineer you speak to will tell you something etirely diffent like "we told you to come back in 3 days time", then they DROP THE CALL ON YOU. shocked cry . That was my experience with them today, they told me you can come and pick your car if you like, we have other customers"

Please be careful not to patronise these guys, i dont want to bore you with the details, but if you feel otherwise then you may try. Thanks

I'm sorry you had this experience after you patronized them based on my recommendation.

I can't hold brief for them, but I'll suggest you try and report your experience to the owner even if you will not be patronizing them again.

I believe the owner is called Mr Kunle.

Autos / Re: Cant Someone Get A Good Car Deal On Nairaland? by SimonTemp(m): 4:32pm On Mar 05, 2012
kuntash:

Thanks Wonderz for ur post,

ehen, who says a 2003 honda cannot be boughty with 1.3M?

I am sure this one was stolen or maybe accidented or ,  not legit,

http://www.tradestable.com.ng/lagos/cars/Tokunbo_Honda_accord_end_of_dicussion_18001.htm

I'm not a dealer, but i've bought a car on NL before, and I've also sold one. And i follow the auto section.

My experience leads me to this conclusion:

Dealers
Only a few dealers are reliable, trustworthy and reasonable. I've seen dealers advertising Nigeria used cars as Tokunbo. I've seen Mileage rollbacks. I've seen cars with history of 3 accidents been advertised as clean title. My conclusion is that it is better to use a reliable dealer with a good track record, then ask for a breakdown of the cost of the car,(if you are importing) - then do an on-line search yourself and compare the prices. If the dealer's price is reasonable, negotiate a bit more before settling for the deal. And have everything documented and signed by both parties.

Buyers
Nigerians just love cheap stuff. No wonder the Chinese have flooded our markets with cheap, sub-standard stuff. Most of just look for a cheap bargain when looking for car.

More often than not, if its cheaper than usual, there's a catch that will come back to bite u. If you want to buy a Tokunbo car. Go online and search, check autotrader, yahoo autos, ebay, carsforsale.com. Get the average price, not just the cheapest, then add at least $3500 (Trucking, Shipping, Clearing, Dealer's fees) to the cost of the car. This will give an idea of what the price should be in Nigeria.

@Kuntash
For argument's sake, please go and inspect that car, get VIN and do a VIN check. Also take your mechanic along. I can guarantee you that one of these will be the case:
-Nigerian used been sold as Tokunbo
-Stolen Car
-Serious Mileage roll-back
-Serious accident or damage

@bjims
You really need to try these guys at autobrite in katampe. Thanks to Nairaland, I also had problems finding a good mechanic for my Volkswagen Toureg and my other cars inc my beloved Hummer H3 which most mechanics here "fix" by trial and error. Since I stumbled upon this tread and contacted them, litteraly all the problems I had been having with these cars have been solved. One major repair centre here in Abuja quoted N1.5 million to replace the gearbox on my Toureg. Amazing!!!!!!. The guy at autobrite diagnosed it as not having the correct gearbox oil (I thought it was a joke at first) and once he replaced with the correct Volkswagen transmission oil, the car drives like a dream once again. Total cost- N60k. Thank God for that. The oga there is a young guy who has been in the UK for over ten years and knows pretty much about cars in general. He is a certified master technician and also has a workshop in the UK. Try them.

It's good to read that this thread has been of great help to you. That was the objective. Guys keep it coming. Any other testimonies? No adverts pls.

@ Siena

Don't know if this is the right thread to post this. Apologies if not.

How can I tell if:
- a car has been changed from RHD to LHD. A car is being advertised for sale in Nigeria, the country of import is UK. I suspect a conversion might have been done. What are the tell tale signs.

- Mileage has been tampered with. The mileage seems a bit low for a car of its age. I expect about 150,000 miles. The car shows 80,000 miles.

Autos / Re: Liberty Jeep Experience Needed! by SimonTemp(m): 10:47am On Jan 04, 2012
Go to carsurvey.org and read up about it. I believe some the challenges encountered by owners will be common regardless of the country.

Additionally, it carries a 3.7 liter V6 engine. Be sure you are ready for that considering the increase in pump price of fuel.

I have a friend that uses it, getting parts and qualified mechanics can be a challenge.

Car Talk / Re: Automatic Transmission: Do Their Benefits Outweigh Their Issues? by SimonTemp(m): 11:29am On Dec 08, 2011
A lot of new cars especially SUVs don't give a potential buyer much of a choice in the available range of transmissions.

So even though I like manual transmissions, if I want to buy a 2011 Lexus GX470, I'll have to settle for an automatic transmission.

Jarus, Ifyalways, OAM4J and r231 - great job and well done.

Well done also to everybody that has contributed.

The idea of the shop for the family is great. But I'd like to suggest that Mrs. Obuh be in charge of the shop while we work on getting Mr. Obuh a job (even if it's a handy man kind of job). That way the family will not be restricted to only one source of income.
