The Federal Government troops deployed to Yobe and Borno have captured some notorious leaders of the terrorist group, Boko Haram, and recovered various weapons. The Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Chris Olukolade disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday. In the statement, Mr Olukolade gave the report of a nine- member Defence Headquarters Operational Assessment Team, sent by the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, to the two states. He said the team visited troop locations in various parts of Borno and Yobe. “The commanding officer narrated the conduct of the operation to rid the (Sambisa) forest of the insurgents who had made the location their sanctuary,” he said. The spokesman quoted the commanding officer as saying that some notorious leaders of the terrorists had been captured while some materials recovered in their camp had provided useful intelligence for subsequent operations. He did not name the captured Boko Haram leaders. “The team was shown the various weapons, including rockets and locally fabricated weapon accessories captured in the forest,” he said. He said items recovered included a large number of Improvised Explosive Devices- making materials, laptops, mobile communication equipment used for shooting and posting online videos, as well as locally made rockets and rocket launchers. “Also, seized vehicles of different brands were shown to the team. “Several vehicles destroyed by the terrorists as well as their tailoring equipment apparently used in producing fake uniforms were also shown to the team,’’ he said. He said the commanding officer told the team that the unit suffered casualties in men and equipment. The defence spokesperson said troops were currently engaged in night and day patrols of the area to dominate the forest and apprehend any terrorist who might be lurking around. He said the Chief of Defence Staff expressed satisfaction with the high level of successes so far recorded in the operation. www.channelstv.com/home/2013/06/25/army-captures-boko-haram-leaders-recovers-weapons-in-borno-yobe/

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has assured Nigerians still living in the Bakassi Peninsula of his administration's continuous care, concern and support for their safety and well- being. A press statement from Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, received here Monday by PANA, indicated that President Jonathan gave the assurance late Sunday in Yaounde, the Cameroonian capital, during his meeting with the Nigerian Community in that country. President Jonathan dispelled fears that the Federal Government had abandoned Nigerians who remained in the peninsula after its transfer to Cameroon and will allow them to be victimized or maltreated. The President expressed the belief that improvement in bilateral relations between the Nigerian and Cameroonian governments, after the judgment of the International Court of Justice on the Bakassi dispute, will also have a positive impact on relations between citizens of both countries. “When countries disagree, their citizens also tend to disagree. But when they are friends, their citizens also follow the same path,' the statement quoted President Jonathan as telling the gathering. Responding to other issues raised at the meeting, President Jonathan said that his administration’s hard work and commitment to change had resulted in significant improvements in growth indicators such as a drop to single digit inflation, stable exchange rates and steady GDP growth. These achievements, the President noted, will gradually translate into improvements in the country’s human development indicators in areas such as health care, education and poverty reduction. President Jonathan also said that his administration was doing everything possible to rapidly improve the power supply situation in Nigeria, citing the recent ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a new power plant at Zungeru as an example of such ongoing efforts. The president praised officers and men of the Nigerian armed forces and security agencies for their effectiveness in the ongoing operations to restore full security and normalcy to the three states where a state of emergency was recently declared. www.afriquejet.com/news/8407-jonathan-to-nigerians-in-bakassi-we-ll-not-allow-you-to-be-victimized-maltreated.html |
