PoliticsKalu: If APC Fails To Make Me Deputy, I Will Lobby To Be Senate President by sirequity(op): 2:49pm On Mar 27, 2019
Orji Kalu, the senator-elect representing Abia North, has said failure of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to hand him to the position of Deputy Senate President, he will lobby his way to be President of the 9th Senate.

Mr Kalu, while addressing newsmen at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, said he will not listen to his party or anybody that will persuade him to step down his ambition of being the next Deputy Senate President.

The former governor of Abia State who asked his party to zone the position of the deputy Senate President at the red chamber to the South East region or have him to contend with said he will not adhere to advise from whatever quarters that will persuade him to step down his want.

“I’m a very loyal party man. The party has zoned the Senate presidency to the North-East and I want to respect the party’s will; but the second position is what we are not going to allow to leave the South-East,” Kalu was quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as saying.

“So, as far as I’m concerned, in the South-East, I’m going to run openly on the floor of the House for the position of Deputy Senate President.

“I am not going to listen to the party, neither will I listen to anybody. Nobody that wants to be the Deputy Senate President is more loyal than I am to the party.

“I have suffered for the party and have been called by Nigerians to come out. I want the party to respect the will of every other person and I’m committed to democracy and contesting on the floor of the House.

“So, if justice must prevail, you have to bring the Senate President from the North-East and you bring the Deputy Senate President to the South-East.

“The chairman of the party is from South-South. The President is from North-West. The Vice-President is from South-West and also the Senate President will come from North-East.

“Whether it is Senators Ahmed Lawal or Alli Ndume, this will be decided on the floor of the House.

“So, for me, the tripod in Nigeria is Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa; and we are going to get the deputy Senate president and I will fight on the floor of the House like no other person has fought,” the senator-elect said.

When reminded that principal officers of the red chamber are not for those who are first-timers like him, he argued insisting he was qualified having being a former member of the Federal House of Representatives from 1991 to 1993 and also a two-time governor.

“I know the nook and crannies of how legislators operate. I have dealt with them and I am not a new comer. So, it is going to be impossible to edge me out or edge a whole zone out by claiming we are new comers.

“I have the capacity for lobbying. I am well known in East, West and North. I will run for the Senate President if justice is not done to say, ‘South-East, bring the Deputy Senate President.’

“I can assure you that there are over 56 Senators in my kitty now for either the Senate President or the Deputy Senate President that have already signed to what I believe in.

“It is only just to unveil it on the floor of the House,” Kalu added.

POLITICS TIMES recalls that aside the senator-elect, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and a host of others has indicated interest in becoming the deputy Senate President.

PoliticsAPC Has No Power To Decide Who Becomes Next Senate President, Says PDP Senators by sirequity(op): 8:17am On Mar 27, 2019
Senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said the All Progressive Congress (APC) has no power to decide who becomes the President of the ninth Senate.

The PDP lawmakers were reacting to the endorsement of Senator Ahmed Lawan by the APC wherein the ruling party picked him as its preferred candidate for the exalted office.

The opposition party lawmakers also advised that the current Senate President, Bukola Saraki, be left out of insinuations in some quarters that the top lawmaker was plotting to influence the emergence of his successor.

Mr Saraki lost his re-election bid to return to the red chamber and will not be part of the ninth Senate.

In a statement signed by Senators Biodun Olujimi and Dino Melaye, the PDP lawmakers said every member of the red chamber can aspire to be the next leader of the upper legislative chamber.

“Let it be known that no matter the mischief being sponsored by these spineless people, Dr Saraki knows that it is the duty of all senators in the ninth Senate to elect their Senate President and other leaders,” the statement read.

“Nobody from outside the Senate has such powers. It is also the right of every senator to aspire to that position as stated by the constitution.

“He has benefited from this practice of senators within the chambers exercising the right. He is conscious of this fact and will not be a party to any plan to seize or interfere with the process of evolving the leadership of the ninth Senate.

“We, therefore, urge the APC gladiators and their handlers to leave Saraki out of their schemes and manipulations.

“They should go and concentrate on how to convince the senators-elect and ensure that the election of the next Senate President takes place in a conducive atmosphere with a view to strengthening the institution and making it perform its constitutional roles, without any hindrance,” the PDP caucus said.

Ifeanyi Ubah, the senator-elect of Anambra South Senatorial District, has denied dumping the Young People’s Party (YPP).

The YPP is the political party on which Mr Ubah ran for the senatorial race and was elected.

He polled 87,081 votes in the February 23 election to defeat his major challenger, Chris Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who came second with 62,462 votes.

Rumors of the senator-elect defecting to the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) were reported recently by some media houses excluding POLITICS TIMES.

The tittle-tattle gained momentum when he appeared in a meeting involving senators-elect of the APC and the leadership of the party.

But the Capital Oil and Gas boss has denied the rumor, insisting that his decision to caucus with the APC does not mean his is a member of the ruling party.

“I am still with the YPP, we do not have a crisis in my party so why would I leave the party?” Ubah queried when contacted by Premium Times.

“Although the APC Chairman introduced me as a potential APC incoming senator during a dinner I attended, but it is normal for chairmen of parties to do that,” he was quoted as saying.

He said his decision to form a caucus with the APC is hinged on the fact that he cannot be a loner in the coming 9th Senate as he is the only one from his party that will be forming the next legislative dispensation.

“I am caucusing with the party because I cannot be a loner at the Senate.

PoliticsAs President, Buhari Now Poorer Than He Was, Osinbajo Claims by sirequity(op): 6:10pm On Mar 16, 2019
Yemi Osinbajo, incumbent vice president, has said his principal, President Muhammadu Buhari, is now poorer than he was before becoming president in the present democratic regime.

Mr Osinbajo stated this on Friday at the presidential villa while addressing volunteers who canvassed votes for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) during the campaigns for 2019 general election.

The number two citizen is the running mate of Mr Buhari, a former military ruler, who had sought the position severally and failed until in 2015 when he won the presidential race defeating an incumbent Goodluck Jonathan.

The duo sought re-election and defeated, Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who was their major challenger.

Buhari, prior to the 2015 election, paraded himself before the masses as one who is poor and couldn’t afford to purchase the nomination form of his party which stood at N28million at the time, a claim he re-echoed during this year’s campaign despite being the president.

“When I looked at his assets declaration form, I was checking it in 2015, I said to him, “Mr President, I am so much richer than you, it is an embarrassment,” Osinbajo claimed he told the president.

The vice president said the president told him that this was because of the differential of their former occupations.

“He said, I am only a soldier, you are a big lawyer so you should have more money than me,” the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) quoted his principal to have said.

“I can tell you that he is perhaps; even poorer than he was in 2015 when I saw his declaration of assets form,” Osinbajo added.

Although, he is now earning about N21million annually, according to the vice president, Buhari has failed to fulfil his promise of making his assets public when he sought the exalted office in 2015.

PoliticsYou Can’t Seize My Senatorial Certificate, Okorocha Dares INEC by sirequity(op): 9:11am On Mar 14, 2019
Rochas Okorocha, the outgoing governor of Imo State has said the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can’t seize his senatorial certificate of return.

Mr Okorocha who ran for the Imo West Senatorial seat on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was declared winner of the race.

The returning officer of INEC for the election, Innocent Ibeawuchi, after the declaration, said he made the pronouncement under duress as his life was threatened, alleging he was held hostage by the governor.

When the electoral body got the information, INEC said it won’t be issuing certificate of return to those whose declaration was made under duress.

When it published list of winners due to receive their certificates today, Okorocha’s name was missing in the list.

Reacting to the development, the governor, while addressing supporters who were on solidarity visit to the government house to protest the conduct of the general elections, said anyone who decides to go against him would lose.

Although he mentioned no name, POLITICS TIMES understands that the governor is of the opinion that the national chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has a hand in what is playing out.

Messrs Okorocha and Oshiomhole are not in good terms despite belonging to the same political party. The face-off between the two began when Senator Hope Uzodimma emerged the gubernatorial candidate of the APC in the state against the wish of the governor who wanted his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu to succeed him.

“I wonder why INEC will withhold my certificate for a frivolous reason, without hearing from me. I am not a violent person and those who know me know that,” Okorocha said on Wednesday.

“This is why we have peace in Imo state. The Returning Officer could not have done that under duress under the watchful eyes of the Police, DSS and party agents. I am not unmindful of the fact that those who are fighting me from Abuja are anxious to see me removed as a senator. I urge INEC to do the right thing immediately by releasing my certificate.

“Let me tell every Nigerian that I fought no one and no one should fight me. If anyone fights me, he will be the loser at the end of it all. My INEC Certificate cannot be touched or seized, doing so is belittling democracy in Nigeria. It is only the tribunal that has the right to say otherwise once a result is declared. INEC cannot seize my certificate by mere petition written by somebody in a case I was not given the opportunity to present my own side of the story,” he added.

The APC senatorial candidate also rejected and called for a supplementary election over the outcome of the governorship election in the state, where Emeka Ihedioha, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged winner.

Mr Nwosu of the Action Alliance (AA) had trailed Mr Ihedioha, coming second in the gubernatorial race while Mr Uzodimma came fourth.

“Uche Nwosu won the election landslide, if you remove the manipulation results from Mbaise, Uche Nwosu won with over 50,000 votes, if you cannot declare him a winner because you have someone already, then they should go for a rerun because you cannot change the Constitution if the Federal Republic of Nigeria because you want to favour a candidate,” he said.

PoliticsAbdullahi Abbas: Kano Supplementary Election Is “Do Or Die” – APC Chairman by sirequity(op): 9:16pm On Mar 13, 2019
A video has gone viral showing the Kano State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Abbas, describing the supplementary governorship election in the state as a “do or die.”

In the short video, the party chairman also assures supporters his party would provide maximum protection for its members even if it means ensuring the dismissal of police officers who try to restore order.

Dressed in a white Kaftan and a white cap, Mr Abbas sat on a plastic chair in a house presumed to be his residence. Surrounding him were youth applauding his remarks.

Speaking in Hausa, he said his listeners should stand against any opposition that comes their way during the elections.

“There is every possibility that you can be arrested. But let me tell you; before you get to the police station we will make sure you are released and the police that arrested you will likely lose his job.

“We are going to give you every protection that is required. This election is a matter of do or die for us. We must win this election,” Mr Abbas said.

The video was not shot by PREMIUM TIMES but a check revealed that it was uploaded on the internet on March 13.

Kano State is among the six states where the governorship elections were declared inconclusive. Others are Plateau, Adamawa, Sokoto and Bauchi states. Before the declaration in Kano, the PDP was leading the APC in the governorship election in the state.

Before the announcement of the election result, the deputy governor of Kano State, Nasir Gawuna, and the commissioner in charge of local government and chieftaincy affairs, Sule Garo, were arrested for trying to disrupt the announcement of the results.

The two officials were arrested some minutes after 2 a.m. Monday after they arrived at the venue of the state collation centre and began to disrupt the process.

Their action led to a halt in the announcement of results at the centre after some youth suspected to be supporters of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) tried to attack the two officials.

The police later released Mr Gawuna without charges as he enjoys constitutional immunity from prosecution based on the office he holds.

The Kano police spokesperson later claimed the deputy governor was not arrested and was only rescued from the mob.

PoliticsBREAKING: INEC Declares Kano Governorship Election Inconclusive by sirequity(op): 10:41pm On Mar 11, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Kano State as inconclusive.

The announcement was made Monday evening by the state’s Returning Officer, Bello Shehu, a professor.

Mr Shehu said the election is inconclusive because the number of cancelled votes is higher than the difference in votes scored between the two leading candidates: Abba Yusuf of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent governor Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Announcing the results, Mr Shehu said while the PDP candidate polled 1,014,474 votes, Mr Ganduje of the APC scored 987,819 votes leaving a difference of 26,655 votes.

He also said the total number of votes cancelled across 22 local government areas including Gama ward of Nasarawa local government is 141,694 votes.

The returning officer said based on the provisions of the law, he has to declare the election inconclusive because the number of cancelled votes is much higher than the difference between the two major candidates.

Kano thus joins a growing list of states where elections have been declared inconclusive. The list includes Benue, Plateau, Adamawa, Bauchi and Sokoto states.

By this, the candidate of the party, Udom Emmanuel, who is the incumbent governor has successfully actualised his second term ambition.

The governor polled 519,712 votes to emerged victorious. He was trailed by Nsima Ekere of the All Progressive Congress (APC) who came second with 171,978 votes.

This was announced by the state returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Faraday Orunmwense, a professor and vice chancellor of the University of Benin.

Mr Orunmwense, in the presence of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the state, Mike Igini, made the announcement at the headquarters of the electoral body early on Monday morning.

Already, the APC has rejected the outcome of the governorship election which saw Mr Emmanuel winning 30 out of the 31 local government areas of the state.

Samuel Akpan, the representative of the APC accused INEC of assisting the PDP in rigging the election. He thereafter walked out of the collation centre after making known his party’s rejection of the poll.

The governor only lost in Essien Udim local government area where Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of the state and Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West, comes from.

Mr Akpabio, who single-handedly installed Emmanuel after serving out his two term as governor of the state under the PDP, had promised to deliver the state to the APC, a party he decamped to last year August.

The former governor who could no longer deliver the state as he promised also lost his second term bid to return to the red chamber.

The attention of the Sen. Ayogu Eze Governorship Campaign Organisation has been drawn to false stories making the rounds that an observer was shot in our principal’s premises while he was in the village for the governorship and state assembly elections.

The true story is that Sen. Eze’s residence was stormed by two vehicles with Enugu State Government registration numbers, claiming to be carrying election observers. While one of them drove inside the senator’s compound, the other stayed outside the gate.

The vehicles had their numbers masked, rousing the curiosity of our supporters who unmasked them only to reveal the Enugu State number plates.

The crowd numbering nearly 10,000 people saw this as unwarranted intrusion, especially as they saw the face cap of the PDP governorship candidate for the election in one of the vehicles and sought to quiz the occupants of the vehicles on their mission.

The atmosphere expectedly turned rowdy suddenly, forcing one of the police officers in the premises to shoot into the air to disperse the crowd. His hand obviously slipped, according to eyewitnesses, and he shot one of the All Progressives Congress, APC, supporters, who passed on while being conveyed to the hospital.

The affected police officer has also been handed over to law enforcement agents who are currently handling the matter in accordance with their service rules.

The so called observers whose identities were questionable were released to the Igbo Eze North Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Samuel Ngwu Attah following the intervention of Sen. Eze immediately his attention was drawn to the incident.

No observer was killed in our principal’s house or anywhere near it. What is circulating in the social media is pure fake news, obviously fabricated by those who sent the team to the house of the governorship candidate.

We see this fake story as part of the coordinated assault on the democratic rights of our principal, who has remained calm in the face of severe provocation.

We hope that with this clarification the authors of this willfully spurn tale by the moonlight will see the need to leave Sen. Eze alone.

PoliticsANALYSIS: 4 Heavyweight Politicians Buhari, APC Dwindled Politically by sirequity(op): 3:43pm On Feb 28, 2019
The victory of President Muhammadu Buhari at the just concluded presidential election has eroded the political influence of some heavyweight politicians across the country.

These politicians were earlier considered influential when they teamed up to ensure they booted out former president, Goodluck Jonathan, from power.

They had supported Mr Buhari who was the major opposition presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) prior to the 2015 general election. The president before then had tried severally to actualise his ambition without success on his part.

Mr Jonathan who sought re-election at the time lost to the APC candidate despite being a sitting president. Many of these acclaimed heavyweight politicians thought their role at the time helped in ousting the former president.

As this year’s general election drew near, they deserted Buhari who they helped enthroned, thinking the withdrawal of their supports was going to ease the president out of office but the Nigerian leader has proved them wrong.

POLITICS TIMES picks out four (4) of these politicians which the president or his party has dwindled their influence.

OLUSEGUN OBASANJO: Many Nigerians rated the former president as the father of politics in the country given the fact the whoever he endorses usually emerge victorious.

After serving out his two term in office, he played a vital role in enthroning, Late Musa Yar’dua and Goodluck Jonathan as president and vice president respectively. When Yar’adua died, Jonathan took over and won the 2011 general election with the support of Obasanjo.

Although he supported Buhari to clinch the exalted office in 2015, Obasanjo withdrew his support when the body language of the president suggested he was interested in a second term in office. In an open letter he wrote, the former president accused the president of being incompetent and a nepotistic leader. He had employed similar tactics when he withdrew his support for Jonathan and many though his latest action will see Buhari loosing.

ATIKU ABUBAKAR: The current presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a former vice president who served during the reign of Obasanjo is another politician whose political influence has withered nationwide.

He lost his long-desired political ambition to Buhari who trounced him with over 4 million votes. Widely known as Atiku, the PDP candidate was among political heavyweight from the Northern region who deserted Jonathan and ensured the incumbent president defeated his predecessor in 2015.

Mocking him after he lost the election, some Nigerians said the law of Karma is in action because the position he sort today is the same he refused to endorse Jonathan for as he would have been the current president-elect if he did.

BUKOLA SARAKI: He is the current president of the 8th Senate. Mr Saraki lost his re-election bid and will not be among members of the 9th Senate.

He was among lawmakers who joined their state governors from the PDP to the APC prior to the 2015 general election, thereby thwarting the second term bid of Jonathan.

While in APC, he emerged Senate President against the wish of the party and has severally rendered attempts to oust him from the position futile.

Returning to the PDP, he was appointed director-general of the party’s campaign organisation but he could not win his third term bid of going back to the red chamber.

The APC has mocked him saying the top lawmaker is politically dead.

RABIU KWANKWASO: He is currently a PDP serving senator, though not returning to the Senate, his state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, belonging to APC, has shattered whatever political influence he controls in Kano State.

Kwankwaso was among state governors who told Jonathan to forget his re-election bid and delivered his state’s 1.9 million votes to Buhari during the 2015 general election.

His political machinery across the state known as Kwankwasiyya Movement could not deliver even a local government to the PDP during the presidential poll.

PoliticsPresidential Election: Go To Court If You Wish, APC Tells Atiku by sirequity(op): 1:01pm On Feb 28, 2019
Atiku Abubakar, the 2019 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been told to make good his threat of seeking legal redress over the outcome of the just concluded presidential race.

The advise is coming from the All Progressive Congress (APC) whose candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari, won the race which began last weekend.

Mr Buhari trounced the former vice president widely known as Atiku, by over 4 million votes to actualize his second term political ambition.

The loser while reacting to the development threatened to reclaim his alleged mandate through the judiciary. Atiku said had the rescheduled exercise been free, fair and credible, he would have wasted no time to congratulate the winner, a demand one of his supporters had made.

But speaking through Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) the party said it was not bothered by the option of the PDP candidate to seek redress in court.

Mr Mustapha spoke on Wednesday night after a thank-you dinner organised by Buhari for the campaign organisation of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to celebrate his victory at the poll.

“We are not jittery at all because the process was open and transparent,” the SGF said.

“It was a credible election and we will continue to savour in the victory but in the process too, we will extend the hand of friendship for the purpose of nation-building and reconciliation

“Our Electoral Act and the constitution have both provided a window for whoever is dissatisfied with the process of election to seek redress. That is the path, and we will encourage them to go along that path,” the party said.

The APC said with the president’s re-election, the administration will invest more on infrastructural development.
