Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deziani Allison Maduekwe, has denied media reports that she was seeking asylum in some foreign countries. Addressing state House correspondents after yesterday’s Federal Executive Council, the Minister said she was not leaving the country, adding that she had no reason to do so. She blamed what she described as consistent malicious and libellous attacks on her person on the reforms she brought about in the oil and gas sector in the country. The minister said: “Let me state it clearly for the records that Nigeria is my country and am not going anywhere. I love my country and I do think that I have done the best for my country and I would also like to point out that these malicious, malevolence, vindictive libels coming out of places like Osun Defender and other faceless online and other entities need to stop. “For everything that has a beginning there is an end and that is not a surprise. What is the surprise is the sort of malevolence bordering on personal malicious libel to my person during this period of time. ‘’I do believe that I have done the best for Nigeria in this job and I have attained many firsts in the history of oil and gas, especially in the reforms that we have done. In this period of time, I have stepped on many big toes, particularly the feet of the cabal in the industry when we came in. ‘’I have said severally that we will open up the industry to all Nigerians and we have, but that is not to the pleasure of certain cabal. And I have been continuously maligned because of this and we have taken millions and in fact, billions of dollars out of the hands of multinationals and their sub-contractors and put them in the hands of Nigerians through Nigerian content. ‘’Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians have come into the oil and gas industry because of our reforms. “Quite frankly, I think as unprecedented as it is, it does not please everybody and that cannot be helped, but let us remember the unprecedented reforms that have happened in the oil industry during our time, such as major gas reforms, the Petroleum Industry Bill, which has been completely revised, reformed and put into the hands of members of the National Assembly where it has languished for two years.” On allegation that she was seeking the intervention of prominent Nigerians, especially former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, to protect her from being held accountable for some of her actions in office, the minister said there was no truth in the allegation. She said: “I believe that Gen. Abdulsalami) has already called it unnecessary mischief.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/nigeria-is-my-country-and-am-not-going-anywhere-deziani/ - |
Once again the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe has posted another massage on his Facebook page this time he said that he has respect for the mandate given to the President elect, General Mohammed Buhari. Okupe massage on his official facebook page (Doyin Okupe) on Tuesday could be said to be a negation to what he said before the April Presidential election when he said that ‘’Buhari was not electable’’ and that ‘Buhari’s victory will not happen’. More so that Buhari has ‘no certificate’. Doyin Okupe and President elect, General Mohammed Buhari Doyin Okupe and President elect, General Mohammed Buhari He went further to say that he was only doing his job when he was attacking the president-elect and that as a free born Nigerian he stand by all that he has said before and after the election. Okupe also said that all he said was to promote the candidacy of President Jonathan his own candidate in the March 28 presidential election. ‘’For 4 years you guys abused and insulted Good luck Jonathan. Heavens did not fall. All I did was to reiterate some of the issues I raised during the campaign and all he’ll is let loose. U can abuse and curse me as.u like I really don’t care because the more you do this the more you all expose yourselves as a bunch of childish, intemperant and intolerant. Pseudo politicians who enjoy criticising others but cannot bear to be criticised even superficially. Trully your intemperate actions makes President Jonathan more than a hero. He silently without any reprisals took all your insults and assault on himself, his family and his government. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. Once again for the avoidance of doubt, even if the whole country is against me on this, I DOYIN OKUPE being a bona fide free born citizen of this country, Nigeria, STAND by all I have said. I have respect for the President elect, General Mohammed Buhari. I also respect his mandate but it was my duty to oppose and criticise him during the elections and I did that to the best of my ability. However it pleased God to give him victory and this we have accepted with equanimity. That is why He is a sovereign God. But the next few years will be tough. We will regroup by the Grace. of God and we will form a formidable, credible, boisterous but reasonable and patriotic opposition. I have said it before and I am saying it again: WE WILL BE BACK’’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/04/okupe-makes-uturn-says-ive-respect-for-buharis-mandate/ |

The Independent National Electoral Commissions (INEC) in Emohua local government area has been set ablaze by unknown political thugs. Vanguard gathered that the building located at Emohua, the Capital of the council which houses the electoral body was Sunday morning engulf in fire. The development may not be unconnected with the irregularities recorded in Saturday’s election in the state. As at press time, none of the election results has been announced. |
Nigeria's military continues to hold two Al Jazeera journalists who have been detained since Tuesday morning. Ahmed Idris and producer Ali Mustafa were detained in their hotel room after returning from covering a story about the Nigerian troops fighting Boko Haram in Borno State. The story, which was done in cooperation with the military, was part of the channel’s coverage on the Nigerian presidential election, which will take place on Saturday. A military statement accused both men of "operating without protection, accreditation or due clearance”. However, both Idris and Mustafa are officially accredited by the Independent Electoral Commission in Abuja. Both Idris and Mustafa are Nigerian nationals and were detained in their hotel rooms. Clement Nwankwo of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre in Abuja said the military needed to be concious of the international focus on Nigeria during the election period. "We hope this is just a misunderstanding," he told Al Jazeera. "But restraining journalists from carrying out their duties for four days is going beyond misunderstanding," Nwankwo said. Idris, who has been with Al Jazeera since 2010, has more than 30 years of experience, and Mustafa has been a cameraman with the network since 2011. An Al Jazeera spokesperson called on the Nigerian authorities to immediately release Idris and Mustafa. “Al Jazeera is dismayed that the military have obstructed Al Jazeera from reporting on the ground ... The continued detention of our staff without any reason is an attack on free media," the spokesperson said. |
