TRAVEL DIARY V: CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY- SCHOOL OF MISFORTUNE

So many ugly stories of decay I heard about the Akwa Ibom State government-owned Secondary School in Ekpenyong Atai 1, Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State compelled me to visit and “see-things-for-myself”. And ol’ boy! I saw things! So much that my eyes nearly jumped out of the sockets! I stood there, mortified. Ashamed. Bewildered. Angry. Sad. Lost. Sick. So sick I literally puked in my stomach. Decay is an understatement. The school has been completely abandoned. Everything that should go wrong has gone wrong.

Community Comprehensive Secondary School Nto Osung, Ekpenyong Atai 1, Essien Udim LGA was founded through community effort in 1979. The few good men of that time such as Mel Idio Ikpa (my father), Etim Akpan Essien Udo and Albert Udo Ikpa teamed up to mobilize the entire community to build a Secondary School and bring education closer home. They knew that education is light. They fought for it; they toiled for it. And they succeeded.

A year after, the then Cross River State government took over the school to the admiration and applause of the founders. The entire community felt relieved that finally, their effort was worth it. At the time government took over, the community had built two academic blocks that accommodated Classes 1-5. Around 1984 or thereabouts (at the start of the 6-3-3-4 system of education) they also built a Technical Workshop for Wood, Building and Welding Technology. The workshop was equipped with bespoke gadgets, tools and machinery. When Akwa Ibom was created from Cross River in 1987, ownership of the school shifted to Akwa Ibom State till today because the school is located in Essien Udim, home of the immediate-past Governor of Akwa Ibom State and current Senate Minority Leader – Obong Godswill Akpabio. A story for yet another day.

From the gate, I was welcomed by a decrepit gatehouse without a roof; without a getman. As I parked my car and made to “remove” bamboo rods that served as “gate”, a group of three boys accosted me, brandishing machetes. I was momentarily afraid for my life. Because they could have harmed, robbed or kidnapped me without any trace by anyone since everywhere was deserted. The school was still on Christmas break. There was no one in sight – just the 4 of us. I saw in their eyes, hunger. They looked malnourished but energetic. Instinctively, I decided to engage them for whatever it would be worth.

After exchange of initial pleasantries, they revealed to me that they were students of the school! But that they were on their way from farm where they went for daily paid labor to help people clear their bush for planting, to make ends meet. The more aggressive one – Ekike Peter Whyte - demanded that I “settle” them. The other 2 – Emmanuel Udo Akpan and Samuel just stood by willy-nilly. All three were aged between 12 and 15. I agreed to “do them Christmas” on the condition that they would keep me company. They agreed too. So we set out on an expedition like no other into CCSS Nto Osung (as the school is fondly known).

I was welcomed by reptiles that darted around the two main academic blocks and millions of holes on barebones dilapidated roof that made it seem as if a million stars were shining beyond the roof. A skeletal semblance of wooden window frames all-eaten-up by termites for many decades hanged loosely from the rectangular wall openings that passed for windows. There were no doors. Each “classroom” was empty of any furniture. I was told students bring their desks and seats from home at the beginning of every term. Since the school was on break, the desks were at home too.

The cemented floorings had all caved in to create islands of sand dunes in the middle of classrooms. I could see “Library” on one of the doors at the extreme, next to “Principal’s Office”. I strolled there to see another shocker. The roof had caved in too, on the stack of books piled on a table at the center. The door was padlocked with a burglary proof but, the window was open. A wide black waterproof was spread on top of what looked like another stack of books on a dilapidated table to shield them from rain. No reading desks. No reading benches. No shelfs! Pools of water at the far right, inside the library.

I went to the Science Laboratory. I saw bottles of reagents that looked 100 old! Dead and rusty Bunsen Burners stood on dilapidated tables. I saw broken conical flasks, petri-dishes, crucibles and discolored funnels and other sundry equipment on the floor. I also saw broken down shelves littered with junk, standing on broken legs in one corner. The windows were open but secured with wires and iron rods. The roof also had a million stars shining forth. A disaster indeed.

I peeked into the Principal’s Office from a broken window Louvre blade. A dated dead rusty Olympia typewriter was sitting on a dilapidated table in one corner. An old cushioned chair balanced on the table next to it. That, I suppose must be the Principal’s "throne". Just my guess though. In front were two plastic chairs. On another corner was a rusty old-fashioned iron cabinet. I suppose, that should contain all the vital student records of the school from inception to date! I saw a wooden cabinet that had heaps of books and sundry paper stacked. There were cobwebs and water stains on the broken roof ceiling. I could see the sky through the ceiling, shinning with rage on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. That was all.

I made to visit the technical workshop. My heart sank as I braved the bush to behold the most shocking encounter of the afternoon. The entire building had been abandoned in ruinous sewage to die, covered by thick bush. What was the roof before, had completely decayed and caved in. All the equipment was gone. Nothing remained. Not one thing – doors, roof, window, tables, benches. None. Only useless smelly debris of decayed and broken wood stood at the centre – wood that cannot even pass for firewood. Where did all the equipment go? No one can tell.

I dashed back from the “workshop” to sit down with the boys in my car. They narrated their horrendous and horrifying no-holds-barred stories to me; personal accounts of the sad experience of students in the school. For example, there is no toilet facility for students. They defecate in the bush. When it rains, students scamper from their “classes” and congregate at the SUBEB building – a four-room house erected in 2006 by the Universal Education Board which serves as staff room – until the rains stop. Sometimes, it rains the whole day thus, students are forced to either stay in the rain the whole day, or stand at the SUBEB veranda the whole day! Teachers posted to the school often always work their way to be posted out as soon as they report; sometimes they do not even report. Some would rather resign their appointments from service, than accept to “teach” in such a school!

One last shocker. My minders also narrated that the school is a WAEC/NECO “magic” centre. During either of the examinations, students pay invigilators to take Question Papers and Answer Sheets home for “solving”. When done, they race back with the competed “Answer Sheets” to pay the invigilators and submit. In their own words “If you don’t pay, the invigilator would not sign your answer sheet and you will fail”. That way, the school posts one of the most “fantastic” results in external examinations in Akwa Ibom State, producing hordes and tons of illiterate students who cannot go beyond the Secondary School or fit into any useful purpose in life. My minders were students in JS3, but none of them could speak or understand English Language! My interactions with them was in the native Annang language.That bad!

At this point, I knew I had heard and seen enough. I paid my minders off handsomely. They were glad to have me. Gladder that what I paid them each was more than they earned in 3 days of bush-clearing! It was eureka moment for them. I left, determined to do all I can to bring this sordid situation to the attention of the world. I wish I had a way into the ears of government - especially, Gov. Emmanuel Udom. I trust someone out there can help me beg them to please, help this unfortunate victims of a terrible and dysfunctional society called Nigeria. I wonder how many more such schools exist to ruin the future of our children.
It beggars believe. More so, that this is happening in Essien Udim - a place the world believes, her problems had been solved by Godswill Akpabio.

Sad!

ALL IS WELL IN IKOT EKPENE SENATORIAL DISTRICT

by Aniekeme Finbarr (Special Assistant (Media) to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State at Akwa Ibom)

One of the striking and kenspeckle features of the Udom Emmanuel led administration in Akwa Ibom State is the uncanny disposition to even distribution of projects in the state. Every senatorial district, federal constituency, local government, ward and family has a testimony or two to attest to in this era of superior performance. Since 2015, life touching projects in the state have been clearly and equitably prioritized irrespective of geographical slants, ethnic zones or tribal algebra.

Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District like her two other sister districts have richly benefitted from the midas touch of the economic tsar at the helm of affairs in the state. Navigating through a turbulent national economic climate and depressing economic recession with tangible results is indeed no mean feat, even for the most intelligent leader. There have indeed been eye-catching fruits of good governance for the people of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.

In infrastructure, Governor Emmanuel has impacted very positively in the geopolitical axis. The 6.41km Nto Edino Ekwereazu road with two 45 metres span bridges had since been commissioned. The project had looked like an impossibility given its swampy terrain and impenetrable topography. Today, indigenous contractor, Seyang Limited, led by son of the soil Engr Samuel Inyang has made the success story a matter of history. The 4.6km College of Arts and Science road, Nung Ukim in Ikono LGA has also been completed. Handled by Hensek Integrated Services, the road is tastily finished with side and outfall drains.

That's not all, work has advanced greatly on the 14.1km Odoro Ikpe-Ikpe Ikot Nkon-Obotme-Arochukwu road with 110km bridge in Ini LGA. The project is executed through the Alternative Project Funding Approach (APFA) and indeed Peculiar Concerns limited is doing a great job. Work is also ongoing on the 23.25km Ikot Ekaide-Ikot Okoro-Ikot Ibritam road in Oruk Anam LGA under APFA plus the 18.95km Ikot Ibritam-Ekeffe-Ikot Akpan Afaha road with a bridge also in Oruk Anam and Ukanafun LGAs. To consolidate road infrastructure in the axis, Governor Udom Emmanuel is also constructing the Abak-Nsekhe-Ikot AkpaNkuk-Ikot Etim-Ikot Ikara(Phase 3, Section A), ie Ikot Ikara to Ikot Ibritam.

5.1 km length of internal roads are wearing a new look at the Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpa, handled by JP Sigma, not forgetting the 4.95km Ibesit Okpokoro/Ikot Ibritam roads. Governor Udom Emmanuel is currently dualizing 25 kilometres of the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road handled by Julius Berger. After several months of contending with court cases and issues arising from payment of compensation, the project is alive and advancing in speed. The total length of the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road is 50kms and crosses Uyo, Itu, Ibiono, Ikono, Essien Udim, and Ikot Ekpene LGAs.

To ensure the economic viability of the district, Governor Udom Emmanuel is committing billions of naira into the 14th storey Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, located in the raffia city of Ikot Ekpene. The facility, which has a total of 146 guest rooms, banquet halls, meeting rooms, spa, indoor and outdoor restaurants, swimming pool, tennis courts, club lounges, roof terraces, fitness centres,etc will strenghten the hospitality sector in Akwa Ibom State.

On May 23,2017, Model Girls Secondary School, Ikot Ekan, Abak was added to the number of schools in Akwa Ibom State. His Excellency Governor Udom Emmanuel commissioned the school, and gave assurance that, the school will commence admissions for full academic operations with boarding facilities. The school had since commenced in September 2017. Governor Emmanuel’s burning passion for education and bequeathing quality learning in the sector, inspired him to pick up the school, which was hitherto overtaken by weeds and reptiles to complete, after the natives of Ikot Ekang, drew government’s attention to the project. Currently, the school has administrative blocks, first class boarding facilities, including 240 beds, a dining hall with 400 chairs and ten class rooms.

Government’s intervention in the education sector has also extended to the tertiary institutions. At the Akwa Ibom State University, Obio Akpa campus of the University, six major projects have been commissioned by the governor. They include a digital language library, a commercial farm palm oil mill, a commercial farm feeds mill, vegetable screen house, ultra modern Mass Communication studios and a standard performance arts theatre.

Schools in Ikot Ekpene senatorial district are part of the 1401 public primary, secondary and technical schools and four tertiary institutions in the state receiving great attention. In addition to setting up ICT laboratories in some of the public and private schools in the state, Governor Emmanuel has not wavered in funding the free and compulsory education programme, which gives every child of school age resident in Akwa Ibom, regardless of state of origin, access to qualitative education from primary to senior secondary school level.

Final year secondary school students in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District are not constrained by lack of money as the government undertakes payment of WASSCE fees for all students in public secondary schools. This also includes payment of NABTEB fees for all students running into hundreds of millions of Naira.

Healthcare delivery in the North West zone of the state is smooth. The General Hospital in Ikono today wears a new look as Governor Udom Emmanuel continues to revolutionize primary and secondary health care facilities in the state.

Agriculture in the zone is receiving a firm attention with increased investment in the cultivation of cocoa and the rice fields in Ini LGA. Farmers in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial zone would not count fertilizer as one of their problems from May this year, as the State’s automated fertilizer blending plant will come on stream. The fertilizer plant is sited in Abak Local Government Area after a formidable team of extension workers was formed to get feedback on challenges and needs of farmers through their various zones and cells.

Power in Akwa Ibom State has tremendously improved with the increased generation of power by Ibom Power Company and the building of injector sub-stations across the state. Ikot Ekpene Senatorial zone will also get theirs as construction and installation is ongoing to boost agriculture and small scale industries.

Through the pet project of Her Excellency, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel, lives are being touched, innumerable to count. One unique example is that of Mr Uwem Nnah of Ikot Udoe in Ikot Ekpene LGA, a widower with five children. Nnah's story is heart rending as he was subjected to all forms of abuse and dejections coupled with the harsh economic climate. Today, he is a proud owner of a well furnished two bedroom bungalow. Mrs Glory Obot of Obot Akara, Mrs Inemesit Emmanuel Charles of Oruk Anam and several others have been blessed with new and well furnished homes. This does not exclude free medical outreach in the three senatorial districts of the state, interest free loans, business support grants to market men and women, empowering the girl child for self reliance and change

Space would not allow to enumerate what Governor Udom Emmanuel and wife are doing for the women, the homeless, weak and vulnerable. But, it is trite that the state government runs eight homes with over 700 children in its care.

Even in politics, Governor Udom Emmanuel has found in sons and daughters of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial district the capacity and trust to work with in the journey to growth and development. This is in line with his political inclusion agenda and a means to reach out to the citizens, empower and touch lives. Notably are the Deputy Governor, Mr Moses Ekpo, MFR, Secretary to the State Government, Sir Etekamba Umoren, Barr Uwemedimo Nwoko, Attorney-General/Commissioner Ministry of Justice, Professor Victor Inoka , Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Education, Prof Nse Udo Essien on. Commissioner, Ministry of Science & Technology, Dr Glory Emmanuel Edet, Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mr Monday Ebong Uko, Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Youths & Sports, Mr Ibanga Akpabio, Ministry of Labour, Productivity and Manpower Planning, Mrs Ekemini David Umoh, Special Adviser, Bureau of Rural Development & Cooperative. There are several others on different boards and commissions, agencies, technical committees, departments and units, all serving as aides and interpreting the superior performance agenda. For his special love for the people of the zone, he stood with the National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Barr Emmanuel Enoidem and ensured that he got elected at the just concluded National Convention of the party.

There are obviously expectations but the passion on the part of leadership is right. Governor Udom Emmanuel has displayed sufficient honesty and commitment to deliver good governance, even in the face of dwindling resources and increasing demands. Like the songwriter, the people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District have declared faith in the capacity and savvy of Mr Udom Emmanuel, their son and in-law to get the job done and move the zone further. They have said it is well. Once the passion is Right, nothing is impossible!

AKWA IBOM: AN ERA OF POLITICAL SOPHISTRY

-Chief Assam E. Assam (SAN)

This is the wee morning of January 2018, and the political storm in Akwa Ibom State is already brewing. In this state, the electoral process is always rancorous but here the vista seems to be differently contrived. The new vista of which I speak is a threat by a Senator to truncate the second term ambition of a sitting Governor if he fails to address a ‘perception of the marginalization of his people.’! This Senator is a former Governor of the State who at one time was thought to be speaking for the whole state but now speaks for a section of it, and by himself deliberately abandons the platform of leading the State, which he had hitherto claimed. Chief Franklyn Isong in his very erudite contribution to the political development has dwelt extensively on this and so I decline any further adumbration.

The Vanguard Online, reported on the 1st of January 2018 as follows:

“AHEAD of the 2019 general elections in the country, former governor of Akwa Ibom State and a serving senator, Godswill Akpabio, has given conditions under which he will support incumbent Governor Udom Emmanuel’s second term ambition. Speaking at the annual get-together organized by the deputy governor, Chief Moses Ekpo, to fete the people of Ikot Ekpene senatorial district, Akpabio insisted that he would only support the governor for a second term if perceived current marginalization of his senatorial district was addressed, warning that the era of ‘carry go’ politics was gone and charged the governor to brace up for the big task. ---- He lamented that some of the projects embarked upon by his (Akpabio’s) administration including the multi-million naira Four points by Sheraton Hotel at Ikot Ekpene and the dualized Uyo-Ikot Ekpene road, had been abandoned by governor Emmanuel, noting that the completion of the projects would form part of the recommendations for his re-election in 2019 ---- Akpabio asked and charged the governor to remove the wedge that stifles development in his zone or be prepared to face the consequences of such action in 2019.”

From the story, which has not been refuted, to my knowledge, the perception of marginalization stems from the non completion of the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road and the non utilization of the Hotel at Ikot Ekpene. Let me quickly say that non completion of projects in the first term of Governors in Akwa Ibom State has never been a condition precedent to re-election. If it were, the first victim could have been Godswill Akpabio himself. I will come to that anon. What is pertinent at this point is to go back memory lane, recalling those fantasy projects that Governor Akpabio would reel out at press conferences, birthday parties, wedding receptions, airport chance meetings etc etc as having been completed and commissioned by his administration and for which he was severally nominated for performance related awards. The endless list always had these projects he now claims are yet to be completed. This hotel, Akpabio commissioned on the 26th of May 2015 with so much fanfare, as ‘Four Points by Sheraton’, an international hotel brand with beds etal was uncompleted? Could ‘Four Points by Sheraton’ lend its name to this monumental fraud without any consequences? Now that this has been placed in the public domain by the distinguished senator himself, it may be worthwhile to seek the truth, using other avenues.

The Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road, project, a 25 kilometer road awarded in February of 2012 to Julius Berger at an undisclosed cost, was to be completed within 12 months. The project was not part of the State’s appropriation for 2012. It was only after its award that as usual, a supplementary appropriation bill was sent to the House of Assembly. Which meant, other projects, as we shall soon see, in the approved budget for the financial year had to be ignored for the funding of this all important project. However, as usual, one lane of the dual carriage road was commissioned by the said senator, when he was in office as Governor. If this project was so dear to the Senator’s senatorial district, that he could hold the current administration responsible for not completing it, how come that for two and a half years after the award of the contract and the payment of huge sums normally attributable to JB contracts, the project was abandoned by Governor Akpabio himself? And if there is anything I can swear to is the fact that Akpabio had one of the most efficient Works Ministry; so what was the problem that needed to be fixed within 30 months of Akpabio’s administration which was left for the next administration, if the completion of the project was of such monumental value to him?

I know Akpabio well enough to say that if this project was important to his people, as he claims, he could have done everything within his executive powers to complete it, and it is on record that this is the ONLY uncompleted infrastructural works in the Senator’s district, taking into consideration the avalanche of multi-billion naira projects that the Senator, as Governor contrived for his district.

It is however instructive to note that the first and flagship project of Akpabio’s Administration was the TROPICANA PROJECT in Uyo, a complex that was to have a five star hotel, a shopping mall, a cinema complex, a conference centre for 5000 persons, a wet and dry park (said to be designed after a facility in Dubai) etc. In an extensively publicized contract signing agreement in July of 2007, the project which was to be completed in thirty months was at a cost of N33,000,000,000.00 (thirty three billion naira). Don’t forget this was in 2007 and as we speak I doubt if anyone knows the cost of this project. At the same time, he awarded the contract for the design and construction of Abak-Ikot Ekpene and Afaha Obong –Etim Ekpo Roads in his aforesaid senatorial district. The wisdom of the road projects could not be questioned. They were roads which had become a nightmare and like a lot of roads in other senatorial districts were in great need of construction. The fact that the Governor started with his district drew no ire or condemnation from any body. It was a necessity. The said roads were completed within record time but the TROPICANA PROJECT in Uyo, outside the Governor’s community, was not completed within the 8 years of Akpabio’s administration nor has it been completed. Yet the Uyo people did not give the completion of the Tropicana as a condition precedent to his re-election.

In fact, to further rubbish the TROPICANA PROJECT, while the hotel in the project was nearing structural completion, Governor Akpabio abandoned it to build the hotel in Ikot Ekpene, two years to the end of his administration, in order that his community would not be marginalized. At the end he left Akwa Ibom State without a functional hotel. Could it not have made sense to complete one before starting the other.

The distinguished Senator made no bones about the development of his community. I use community in a very limited sense, not in the wider perspective of the senatorial district, which he claims to speak for. The Senator’s district is divided into three contiguous areas. The old Abak Division, the Ibibio Local Government Areas of Ikono and Ini and the old Ikot Ekpene which is his immediate constituency. Akpabio as governor built no road, bridge or notable infrastructural facility in Ikono and Ini the Ibibio Local Government areas of his senatorial district. NONE. All the projects in Abak were designed to channel development or traffic to Essien Udim and Ikot Ekpene, the immediate constituency of the Senator. Let me cite just a few.

The Uyo-Abak dualized road with a two hundred meter bridge emptying into a single carriage Abak-Ekparakwa road was designed to ensure that the Prisons in Abak was relocated to Essien Udim as a part of the prisons relocation exercise of the Akpabio Administration. The dualized Abak – Ikot Ekpene Road complete with street lights and drainage; the Afaha-Obong Etiim Ekpo Road which links the Etim Ekpo-Ika Road to Ukana East in Essien Udim Local Government Area the immediate ward of the distinguished senator; the Ikot Ekpene prisons relocation exercise on the pretext that it was within the immediate precincts of the city centre. While this argument may be correct, the senator, while Governor completely forgot or did not know that outside Ikot Ekpene and Abak Prisons, Eket prisons, which was the first in the state was within the immediate precincts of the city centre too but it behoved the Governor to construct an ultra-modern prison in his village. The Ikot Ekpene city centre is today a model in city reclamation programs in Nigeria. The entire roads in the town is asphalted with drains in the most qualitative way. Then the hotel, the first of its kind in the state though designed without an industrial kitchen and a conference centre and without the inputs of the brand whose imprimatur was used to commission it on the 26th of May 2015. Even the much vaunted fly-overs built in Uyo are all directed at traffic to Ikot Ekpene. The ever busy and traffic ridden Aka Road enjoys a remodeled roundabout and deserved no fly-over because it did not lead to Ikot Ekpene. The Federal Government needed to cite a polytechnic in the State, HE took it to his village. To now accuse Udom Emmanuel of marginalization of his people makes the senator come across as a selfish, self conceited bigot. This a classic case of calling a dog a bad name to hang it.

When the Senator’s story broke, I was worried that maybe because Akpabio, during his administration did nothing of any substance in Eket Senatorial District, Udom Emmanuel may have decided to pay him by the same coins. I went with my friends from the district on a two day visit to Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and this is what I found, by myself: the current government has completed a seven kilometer road with two bridges measuring about 50 meters in span from Nto Edino to the Abia State town of Ekwereazu. The administration has also completed a five kilometer road leading to the School of Arts and Science in Ikono, beautifully finished with drains and outfalls; and in Ini Local Government Area I saw a road project at Odoro Ikpe heading to Arochukwu, which was not motor able when I recently visited to commiserate with my friend who was bereaved. In the Ukanafun – Oruk Anam axis, I saw ongoing works on the 25 kilometer stretch road leading from Ikot Ekaide to Ikot Okoro and another project from Ikot Ibritam to wherever, I would not know. The Akwa Ibom State University Obio Akpa looks like Ikot Ekpene township – all the internal roads are asphalted. On the personnel in the State Executive Council, until now, the senator’s district has ten out of 20 members of the State Executive Council including Udo Ekpenyong, who the Governor recently sacked to please Akpabio. How do you spell MARGINALIZATION?

I hold the opinion that Senator Akpabio was not really intending to complain about uncompleted projects in Ikot Ekpene. He intended to send a message to Governor Udom Emmanuel that he has an alternative to him as the Gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party come 2019 elections. For me and a host of people who already know this for a fact he did not need to use tribal sentiments to buttress that point, though generally he has difficulty in thinking before speaking. In my earlier memorandum to the distinguished senator

I had assured him that no reasonable person would take his assurances of support for Udom as a statement from the scriptures because of his antecedents in such matters. He did not deny that assertion though I had a visitation which I could not fail to ascribe to that memorandum. One of his goons even pretended to insult me for calling his god by its name. But I still hold that view.

Why should my views on the matter change? No reason! Throughout Akpabio’s eight years in office no access road was constructed to any part of Eket Senatorial District, where the entire revenue of the state comes from and someone is talking of marginalization! The Uyo-Uya Oron Road was abandoned; the Etinan-Eket Road was abandoned and as for Ikot Abasi Federal constituency, no effort was made to provide any infrastructure. Even the Eket to Ibeno road project, which was part paid for by ExxonMobil, was truncated by the Akpabio administration using all sorts of subterfuge until reason prevailed during this Government.

But to think that it is Akpabio who should threaten the Governor, publicly, is preposterous. According to the statement, there will be consequences if the Governor fails to abide his instructions! Hawk-wash. I am certain the senator did not mean that. I know that his supporters have always insisted that they will show Udom at the end when that time comes. But what has the young man really done to deserve the venom that is spewed to malign him on a daily basis. For me and those of us who are without the inner caucus of Government and have never been invited to the PDP’s caucus meetings even though eminently qualified, the opportunity to err views is said to be denied. But for Akpabio who sees the Governor at will, why the public vilification when you can discuss except the intention is to achieve an ignoble end.

The point is not lost on me, that all these may be because of the character, mien, carriage and natural attributes of Udom Emmanuel. I did warn him and even if he did not believe me then he does now, that Akpabio will try a last minute gambit on him. I also tried to persuade Akpabio not to be so completely predictable. But each day I find myself battling to resist the truth. But as the Efiks say “truth is like a goat-head; it cannot be lost in the soup pot and you cannot swallow it with your ball of foofoo’.

I think the main reason for the apparent disdain with which Akpabio treats Governor Emmanuel is because of all the Governors in Nigeria, Emmanuel is the only one who has not embarrassed his predecessor, particularly the self-styled godfathers. Governor Emmanuel has a permanent place in his public utterances for Senator Akpabio. He refers to him as his mentor. And he means it. He uses every opportunity to extol the virtues of his predecessor and squirms at criticisms of him. He struggles with excuses for him even in the face of very obvious gaffes. He does not leave anyone in doubt that he has a lot of respect for the Senator. What he has not done and will not do and perhaps that is what Senator Akpabio expects him to do, is to make a molten image of him to be worshipped as part of the State’s Calendar of events. But the Senator is not cut in that mold. He deploys any and every opportunity to let his audience know how he brought Udom and made him Governor and how Udom has not lived up to his bidding; putting it most urbanely.

A lot of people have spoken to me and feel angry that the Governor is exhibiting a great weakness in making himself Akpabio’s whipping object. They opine that what Akpabio, as Governor resisted most of all was control. They testify to the fact that Akpabio would not let his predecessor into the Government house and insulted and abused him whenever possible and generated enormous hate against Obong Attah. They feel that Governor Emmanuel must assert himself and paddle his boat. It is their opinion which I subscribe to, that remote control is good for electronics only. They believe that respect being reciprocal, and having not been reciprocated Governor Emmanuel has no business humiliating himself just to please a man who will never be pleased.

I know both gentlemen well. I am certain they too know each other well. They are in a position to evaluate each other’s strength and weaknesses. But to take an adult for granted is to take a risk. As adults in politics they can sort themselves out. My unsolicited advise to Udom is not to pretend to be me or somebody else. He has to continue to be himself, respectful, urbane, humble and focused. You know why Akpabio encouraged you above every one else to succeed him. It was because he believed you had integrity, and could enhance the development of the state based on the model he had set in the state. However, do not copy your predecessor’s model completely particularly the model which ensured that the development of the state should start from the home of the Governor and where possible other communities should be sacrificed for the sake of satisfying the Governor. Be generous in your disposition and accommodate those from without your family.

To Senator Akpabio, don’t forget the story of the frog and the snake, both of them are being advised by their mothers. Udom may not be that completely humble person you think he is and your insults could colour his attitude. You may be under estimating him. Do not forget the story of Nebuchadnezzar the King who played god. Your memory cannot fail you so fast that you cannot recall that you left office as governor with over N500 billion in debts and sundry financial commitments, N83 billion of which was due to Julius Berger, your choice contractor alone, in spite of the huge financial resources at the time. As you may recall, the situation was so bad that Julius Berger dared to lock up the Stadium for non payment of outstanding debts sequel to a crucial international football engagement. This is not to mention the cost of maintaining the stadium which you negotiated at the unbelievable sum of N600 million per annum for the same Julius Berger.

I will urge you not to exert too much pressure on your successor. The weight of the pressure may be too heavy and if he drops the pot it will break and spill its contents and that which you tried to hide may become public knowledge. As you well know, one man cannot be the sole custodian of the puerile game of blackmail. That others do not play it does not mean it is not available to them. The more you publicly malign him, the more people want to find out the history of your relationship and the revelation of what cover he has given you these past years become apparent. They even come to admire and respect him, leaving someone else the scoundrel.

I had in my earlier memorandum to you urged that you try not to be remembered as the father and mentor of political sophistry and double speak in Akwa Ibom State. You are still young. You can still change. But the first sign of change will be when you learn to think of what you want to say and its consequences before you speak. It is becoming a gaffe too many, dear Senator. In that same memorandum I told you that when you moved the motion for Udom Emmanuel’s second term in the PDP caucus meeting in Uyo, you intended to ensure that Udom was relaxed while you truncate his bid. You now deploy excuses to do so but have voiced no reason. Please do not be so predictable. Try and prove me wrong this time distinguished Senator.

May the truth always prevail. Anwe Akpa Senyi!

Akwa Ibom Gov. Emmanuel, Akpabio in ‘full-blown political war’

https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/255210-akwa-ibom-gov-emmanuel-akpabio-full-blown-political-war.html

Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel, and his predecessor and godfather, Godswill Akpabio, are at war against each other.

The public, for several months, has been fed with the information that the two leaders were enjoying the best of relationship, until during the yuletide, when Mr. Akpabio, the Senate Minority Leader, publicly accused the governor of neglecting his area, the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District.

The senator, at a get-together organised for the chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in his district, said it was better to inform the governor that “2018 is less than one year to election, all is not well.”

Referring to the governor, apparently, he added, “Don’t allow anybody to deceive you that all is well.”

Thereafter, things went sour. A rejoinder from Governor Emmanuel’s media aide, Aniekeme Finbarr, who enumerated all the ‘good things’ the governor has done for Mr. Akpabio’s senatorial district, attracted a rebuke from the senator’s media aide, Anietie Ekong.

“Looking at it on its face value and for whatever it is worth, what Mr. Finbarr sought to do is to reply Senator Akpabio that contrary to what the Senator had said, indeed the concerns by the elders, youths, women, leadership and the entire people of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District is (sic) misplaced,” Mr. Ekong said in a statement he issued in a response to Mr. Finbarr.

“It’s like telling Senator Akpabio, ‘shut up, sir’,” Mr. Ekong said in the statement.

And then the governor himself on Wednesday dropped the bombshell: He threatened to deal decisively with anyone trying to cause trouble in the state, irrespective of his status.

Mr. Emmanuel, according to a Government House statement, said he was aware that people would try to “change the narrative in order to score cheap political points” because 2019 election was around the corner.

“This year is going to be a little bit busier in terms of politics and once you enter into a political terrain of this nature so many things come up.

“But let me also use this platform to warn any Akwa Ibom person that with the sacrifice we’ve made to maintain peace in the state, we won’t tolerate anybody, anybody underlined, to breach that peace.

“You can see that people have made a lot of sacrifices in the last three years to maintain peace in the state,” the governor said, apparently referring to the remarks from Mr. Akpabio.

Former Governor Godswill Akpabio Former Governor Godswill Akpabio
The statement quoted the governor as saying that he was shocked at the “emerging political theory whereby excellence is sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity”.

“Let me also say here that it’s just a new political theory where a postgraduate student would score 100 per cent and you say it’s a mock examination and is a failure.

“So if you score 100 per cent and under the new dispensation of a political theory, it is a failure. It means we have to go back to the drawing board and know what the pass mark is.

“If 100 per cent under the new political theory is a failure then it holds much to be desired,” the governor said.

Mr. Akpabio’s grouse, going by his public remarks, is that Mr. Emmanuel has abandoned the Four Point by Sheraton Hotel in Ikot Ekpene and the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road started by the senator when he was the governor of the state.

Mr. Akpabio’s thinking, as expressed by his media aide, Mr. Ekong, is that if he (Akpabio) could dualise the road from Uyo to Ibesikpo-Asutan, where the former governor of the state, Victor Attah, is from, even when Mr. Attah did not want or support him as governor, then there is no reason why the present administration that he birthed and has been supporting could not complete the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road.

Governor Emmanuel is said to be angry and frustrated with the Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road because of the huge amount of money allegedly taken out for the road project by the Akpabio administration, without completing it.

An audio clip from the Government House was leaked to the press in November, last year, in which Governor Emmanuel was heard saying, “Some people would go and write ‘Oh, he has abandoned Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road’! Do you know how much I pay to Julius Berger?

“Immediately I got into office, I went and borrowed N6 billion from Zenith Bank and gave to Julius Berger for them to continue that Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road, they took the money and claimed that it was for past indebtedness.

They didn’t put one naira on that road.

“There’s no single month that I don’t give Julius Berger at least N1 billion to run that road,” the governor said.

The governor also spoke on the Four Point by Sheraton Hotel.

“For the Ikot Ekpene hotel, that one I can’t help it. We must still put in more money. A lot of people have started making noise that the government has refused to open the hotel. Sorry, building is different from hotel.

“I need $7.2 million to turn that building into a hotel. And as at today, I have paid a deposit of $4 million, remaining $3.2 million. And I am still looking for the $3.2 million to pay so that I can turn that building into a hotel. It is not yet a hotel,” he said.

People from different walks of life, as it is expected of this kind of war, have jumped into the fray to express their loyalty to either the governor or the senator.

Clement Ikpatt, a former aide to Mr. Akpabio when he was the governor took to Facebook on Thursday to criticise Governor Emmanuel for “yelling out” a “last warning” threat against Mr. Akpabio.

“General peace is not being threatened in Akwa Ibom State since former governor, Godswill Akpabio, said that all is not well with his people and district. So, why the warning?

“In an election year, folks are going to take strong positions and wield strong partisan influences as is expected in a free and democratic society.

“Udom’s ‘last warning’ threat is uncalled for and grossly undemocratic. If he cannot stand the heat, he should leave the Akwa Ibom State political kitchen by simply resigning from office,” Mr. Ikpatt said.

“Democracy must and will thrive in Akwa Ibom State,” he added.
Politics / Godswill Akpabio Versus Gov. Udom Situation Room - All The Sides In One Place by sisimmi: 9:16pm On Jan 11, 2018
It is no longer news that Senate Minority Leader and immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State - Godswill Akpabio is at war with his handpicked successor - Gov. Udom Emmanuel. There are undertones and accusations bothering on corruption, embezzlement and abandonment of projects. This thread is open to all sides to throw their missiles. In the end, Akwa Ibom would be better for it. For far too long, things have been shrouded in secrecy about the stewardship of Akpabio and the debilitating debt overhang that left behind which has crippled governance in that State and forced Udom to under-perform. Whispers say that Akpabio compelled Udom to swear to a powerful 'juju' as condition precedent to his election in 2015. They say he swore, and he has kept faith and protected all the shady things that Akpabio did, from coming to light at the detriment of the State. Now the genie is out of the bottle. Time to tell it all.
Phones / Letter Bomb To NTEL By A Disappointed Subscriber Over Tariff Increase by sisimmi: 4:20pm On Dec 21, 2017
Dear Ntel,
I write to register my utmost displeasure at the way you sneaked your new tariff plan on me. I have been a faithful subscriber with the line 08048188*** and 08048188*** since NTEL commenced commercial services in 2016. This recent increase is obviously aimed at punishing me for staying faithful to your brand. You know that the tariff was earlier increased from to N12,500 not very long ago in bad taste too.

I am serving you notice that I would not renew my subscription with you again, after my current plan runs out. Your business model would backfire on you as I know a couple of other friends who have already left. Spectranet did exactly what you are doing now, and have not fully recovered from that misstep. I assure you, we would be fine without you, Ntel.

So long.

Religion / Re: Tithe Against Poverty Challenge By Daddy Freeze by sisimmi: 5:26am On Dec 13, 2017
What I learn from this thread:
1. Religion has become a highly polarizing force especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
2. Self-acclaimed pastors and "men of god" are extremely powerful in Africa and have taken over the minds of many.
3. They have successfully 'interpreted' the good Book and indeed, reduced God to a transactional commodity exchange where you can pay for blessings depending on how much you are willing to part with using all sorts of 'principles' that are alien and indeed heretical. Doing good and living the life of righteousness in preparation for life-everlasting for which our Lord came and died has been buried in the heap of the materialistic new world.

It is depressing reading through this thread and all the name-calling. More so, when people would go to all lengths to defend something as clearly unchristian as the concept of "tithe". If we are truly "followers" of Jesus Christ, then we should be more concerned with "being our brothers' keepers" and less with keeping the laws of Moses, which itself was the reason Christ came and shed his precious blood.

My take: If we sincerely believe that we should get back to the pre-Jesus "principles" that worked in the Biblical times, then we should not be selective. We should apply them all to our lives. Examples abound in the Good Book:
There was the ritual of Passover where all male children were to offer blood sacrifices on the 10th day of the Passover month for God for salvation from sin and deliverance from bondage, there was the ritual of the feast of unleavened bread, feast of the first fruit, feast of atonement, feast of the tabernacles, etc. Jepthah had to kill his own daughter (a human being like all of us) as sacrifice to God for helping him win a war. Josiah executed the priests of the pagan shrines on their own altars, and he burned human bones on the altars to desecrate them. In Deuteronomy 13:13-19 the good book records the following commandment against unbelievers:

“Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. “The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him.”

It is either we accept the redeeming power of the blood of Jesus that was shed on the cross to set us free and try to be like him in our deeds (and he never paid or collected any tithe but he admonished us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves) or go back to the "principles" of old and relish in their sacrificial disposition to life, tithing being just one of the many for our blessings to come. It is sneaky to select tithing alone. We should start sacrificing our children on the alter too. It used to work. It still works.

I was @ the launch @ Sheraton, Abuja. The crowd was impressive. Event was well organized. They promised all that we already know. The MD added that they have signed an MOU with MainOne to retail their data as part of the package and that the 20GB at first subscription is complementary. It got a lot on tongues wagging. If they can deliver data on the cheap, then it's goodbye to DSThievy! From the frenzy and ecstasy I felt in that hall today, DSTV obviously has a lot of dissatisfied customers in Nigeria who really yearn for something better; something more exciting. I was thinking that TSTV would give us a pinhole view of their offering in real time today. Alas, they presented multimedia clips with voice-over kinda adverts about their mission. And when Lai Mohammed unveiled the decoder, it was a huge dummy decoder. Nothing to feel or see. Perhaps they are still tweaking the real deal. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Thumbs up to them though.

People on cyberspace can be so damn uncouth. Some of us assume that someone cannot hold an opinion without being "paid" or being an agent of one of the parties. That is not right at all. For all these sort of people, I have nothing but pity. Plenty of it.

For the records, I am a very angry DSTV customer. The last paragraph of my treatise was clear on this. I undertook this journey with excitement, and hope that I would find solace in Tstv. I came away distraught, and decided to share my experience. Whoever feels I am an agent of DSTV is free to hold that view. Just as he/she is free to visit Yaba left for psychiatric test.

Yes. I drove into the TSTV corporate headquarters at Jahi, opposite Gilmor site - Abuja this afternoon. This move was precipitated by the media hype surrounding their entry into the pay-TV market in Nigeria. Mine was just a fact-finding visit to "meet, greet and feel" the buzz.

The first thing that struck was the makeshift security barrier leading to their sprawling compound. A police van was stationed beside the ring of wire, strewn across sand-filled drums on a dirt road. There was noticeable human and vehicular traffic in and out the property, located deep inside this forested up-coming upscale neighborhood. TSTV office is an isolated superstructure decked in their traditional green color. I asked to see the marketing people for inquiries and was directed to the basement. As I made my way down the flight of stairs, the sign "please don't touch the door" flashed on my face from the glass door. At first, I thought it was automatic and would slide open on its own. After some hesitation without any such sign, I gave it a push. It opened and I walked in.

Inside, I could not feel the ambiance of a tsunami-like organization, eager to take on the dstv behemoth. Rather, the setting was quite ordinary and bare-bone. The ceiling looks old and cheap. No whistles and The font-desk lady was pacing up and down, trying to fake some smiles. On the wall was a 40-something inch plasma TV tuned to CNN's Anderson Cooper 360. The pictures were grainy and quite pedestrian. The colours were anything but digital. Sound-quality was very poor. I peeped to see any signs of signal-logo on the screen to be sure it is a TSTV signal. There was none. I asked to see the offering and equipment. The lady told me to wait till Sunday. I asked for any other information that may assist me understand. She handed the attached 2-page piece of handwritten photocopied flyer to me. I was perplexed. Handwritten flyer?

As I turned to go, it struck me that TSTV may not exactly turn out as strong a competition to DSTV as we are made to believe; against all the hype and predictions. Stepping outside, I saw rows of dummy large-circumference satellite dishes littering the frontage, deliberately placed to hoodwink and deceive people. Outside the gate, I saw that the Development Control Unit of FCDA had marked and demolished the small hut, built to house TSTV's transformer because it was illegally located. The blocks and bricks still litter the environment.

I dashed into my car and drove away, with trepidation and prayer that my impressions may just turn out false, for I really wish for the day someone would give DSTV a bloody nose. I pray the day comes soon. I am afraid, TSTV may not be the one. After all. Yet again!

A local community in Akwa Ibom State has given an ultimatum to members of a suspected local cult group to lay down their arms and denounce cultism or be ready to face the people’s wrath, as well as the law.
The people of Midim Atan, in Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state, assembled at their ‘Afe Idung’ (community hall) on Saturday to deliberate on the activities of the suspected cult group, Akwa Marine, and its impact on the general well-being of the community.
The unanimous verdict was that it was unacceptable for the rest of the community to continue to live as helpless victims in the hands of “a few bad persons among them.”
There was tight security at the meeting venue. More than a dozen armed security men were seen guarding the area.
The leader of the Akwa Marine, Emmanuel Ben, is in prison custody for cultism and murder. He was arrested in April by community youth and handed over to the police.
But that hasn’t stopped his followers from allegedly unleashing terror on the community.
“The essence of today’s meeting is (for the community) to ask the cultists to come out for peace and that they will be granted amnesty,” Abel Wilson, the Village Head of Midim Ikot Ubo, said on behalf of other village heads, family heads, community leaders, women and youth leaders in the community.
“They (the cultists) have only one week to denounce cultism,” he said, adding that “We are also requesting for the government’s intervention so that cultists won’t drive us out from the village.

“We don’t have anywhere to run to. We don’t want more people to be killed.”
The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in the local government area, Alhassan Guga, and the officer in-charge of the State Security Service, SSS, George Isaac, were present at the meeting.
The meeting was also attended by indigenes of the community who fled to Uyo, the state capital, and outside the state because of the maiming and killings alleged to have been perpetrated in the community by the suspected cultists.
Victor Udom, one of the victims of the cult attack in the community who now lives in exile in Abuja, was also at the meeting.
He said he won’t keep quiet while criminals continue to destroy lives in the community.
“We must stop the killing now in our community,” said Mr. Udom, a former employee of Mobil Nigeria.
“I will do everything I can to defend the right of the people to life,” he said.
The residents , one after the other, recounted how their loved ones were attacked and killed, sometimes in broad daylight, in the past seven years by members of the Akwa Marine.
PREMIUM TIMES, in May, reported on the activities of the suspected cult group and how the community people who appeared to be helpless because of the alleged police inaction travelled to Abuja in April to seek intervention from the Inspector General of Police.
One aged woman, whose son, Udo Udom, was brutally killed, cut into pieces, and burnt by the suspected cultists in 2016, was among the community people on the Abuja trip.
In Abuja then, the woman, Nse John, narrated in tears to PREMIUM TIMES what happened.

“They came and took my child from the house at 7 p.m. When they left with my child, I was not feeling well, I put on my clothes and walked gently. Before I could get there, they had killed him and cut him into pieces.”
At the Saturday meeting in Midim Atan, Mrs. John, still grieving, begged the community and the police to fish out those who murdered her son and ensure that justice was done.
“I can’t sleep in my village anymore because they want to kill me. I don’t know why they killed my son, I don’t know why they want to kill me and my family,” she said.
Eseme Jeremiah, the Acting Village Head of Midim Atan, is another victim of the cult attack.
Notwithstanding his status in the community, Mr. Jeremiah was shot multiple times by his attackers on August 30.
He miraculously survived the attack.
Mr. Jeremiah pulled off his cloth at the community hall to show people the bullet wounds on his back.
Monday Ekanem, a retired employee of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, wasn’t that lucky. He was shot dead in his country home by suspected cultists on August 11, few months after he relocated to the community.
Ironically, both Mr. Jeremiah and the murdered retired NDIC staff were members of a peace committee set up by the community to reconcile the suspected cultists with other members of the community.
The Akwa Marine members, said to be enjoying the backing of some powerful politicians and security officials in the state, are also alleged to be involved in armed robbery in Midim Atan and neighbouring communities.
The group is said to have once shut down the local market and prevented people from selling or buying for the day just to demonstrate how powerful they were.
The SSS chief in the local government area, Mr. Isaac, persuaded the community to “allow a two-week ultimatum to the suspected cultists, instead of one week.”
The SSS and the police assured the community that they would do their best to help restore peace and order in the area.

“After two weeks, if you don’t come out and renounce cultism, we will come after you,” the SSS chief said, obviously referring to the cultists.
The Midim community issued a communiqué at the end of the meeting, warning politicians to desist from arming and encouraging Akwa Marine to continue terrorising them.
“We have decided to take our destiny in our hands and protect ourselves,” the community said in the communiqué.

...As IGP gives group two weeks to surrender arms, denounce cultism

..It'll be fire, fury after two weeks - DSS warns

Members of the dreaded Akwa Marine Cult group in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have been given a two-weeks ultimatum to surrender their arms, denounce cultism, embrace peace or face the full wrath of the law.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP, gave the order on Saturday when he addressed members of Midim Atan Community as part of a peace and reconciliation effort brokered by security agencies towards finding lasting peace in the area. The IGP was represented by the Essien Udim Divisional Police Officer, Guga Alhasssan at the parley.

Amidst watertight security by the Police and Department of Security Services, DSS, indigenes of Midim Atan Community, comprising of Midim Atan, Midim Ikot Inyang Udo, Midim Nto Udo, Midim Ikot Akpan and Midim Ikot Ubo Villages in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State, gathered at the Midim Village Council under the peace initiative. It was the first time in years some indigenes of the area set foot on the village since the community was taken over by the cult group.

The IGP who pleaded with the youths to repent and give peace a chance, warned that no meaningful development can thrive in the community without peace and admonished the elders to unite, reconcile and help maintain the peace.

He warned that no criminal group can arm twist or blackmail the government, describing as ridiculous, claims by the cultist that they will only stop the killings and embrace peace if their leader, Mr Emmanuel Ben is released from prison custody.

Also speaking, a representative of the Director of State Security, DSS, admonished the youths to see their continuous criminal activities as undermining not just their future but the peace, progress and development of the community.

He admonished Midim youths to compare their community with neighbouring Mkpatak and see the difference between a peaceful community and a war torn area, urging them to embrace peace in their own interest. The DSS warned that at the expiration of the two weeks amnesty window, the government will confront the security situation in Midim with fire and fury, warning the cultist and community leaders to learn from the Odi and Ika examples.

In a communique issued at the end of the peace meeting, the community said having exhausted every effort to attract government and other relevant agencies attention through many petitions over the menace of cult activities plaguing the community in the last seven years without success which has resulted in the deaths of many indigenes, the time has come for all relevant stakeholders to come together to avoid a total breakdown of law and order.

The community lamented that the havoc caused by Akwa Marine Cult group under the leadership of Emmanuel Ben Umoh and his sponsors, which have been well documented in many petitions and entries to security agencies all over the country include the KIDNAP, TORTURE AND ROBBERY OF CELESTINE IKPA IN 2011, the MURDER OF ANIEKAN FRIDAY, ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON SAMUEL MEL AND VICTOR UDOM IN 2015, the MURDER AND PUBLIC INCINERATION OF UDO FRIDAY JOHN UDOM 2016, the MURDER AND PUBLIC INCINERATION OF UDO EKPENYONG UWA IN 2016, ATTACK AND THREAT TO LIFE OF CHIEF ABEL WILSON UMO, ARMED ROBBERY ATTACK ON UDEME TOM UDOUDO, ROBBERY ATTACK AND GRAVE BODILY INJURY ON UNYIME AUGUSTINE MEL, ROBBERY AND GRAVE BODILY INJURY ON UDEME UTONGWO WITH MOTOR CYCLE SNATCHED AT GUN POINT, ARMED ROBBERY AND GRAVE BODILY INJURY ON UBONG OKON UDO WITH MOTOR CYCLE SNATCHED AT GUN POINT, ROBBERY AND GRAVE BODILY INJURY ON EMEM JAPHET, ARMED ROBBERY AND GRAVE BODILY INJURY ATTACK ON UDUAK OKON UDO, SEVERAL DAYLIGHT ROBBERY ATTACKS ON COMMUNITY MARKET, URUA NSONG ETO, IMPOSITION OF CURFEW AND CLOSURE OF NSONGETO MARKET ON 22ND APRIL 2017 by the cultists, INTIMIDATION OF PARENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS OF MURDERED VICTIMS BY GANG MEMBERS FORCING THEM ON EXILE FOR OVER A YEAR NOW WITH NO HOPE OF RETURN, ASSAULT ON, SACRILEGIOUS PUBLIC STRIPPING AND COMMANDEERING OF THE ROBES AND STAFF OF OFFICE OF THE ACTING VILLAGE HEAD OF MIDIM ATAN  CHIEF ESEME JEREMIAH ON 7TH APRIL, 2017, ASSASSINATION OF MR MONDAY UDO EKANEM, a RETIRED STAFF OF THE NIGERIA DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION ON AUGUST 11TH , 2017, ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON THE LIFE OF CHIEF ESEME JEREMIAH  ACTING VILLAGE HEAD OF MIDIM ATAN VILLAGE, WHO ESCAPED BY THE WHISKERS WITH MULTIPLE BULLET WOUNDS ON AUGUST 30, 2017, ONGOING THREATS TO ASSASSINATE ALL VILLAGE HEADS, ELDERS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS UNLESS THEIR LEADER  EMMANUEL BEN UMOH, WHO IS CURRENTLY IN PRISON CUSTODY IN IKOT EKPENE PRISONS IS RELEASED UNCONDITIONALLY, FREQUENT CLANDESTINE MEETINGS BETWEEN THE GANG, EMMANUEL BEN  AND THEIR MOLES IN SECURITY CIRCLES RESULTING IN CONTINUED MAYHEM, INFLUENCE OF POLITICAL HEAVY WEIGHTS IN PROTECTING THE GANG WITH MANY ATTEMPTS TO FRUSTRATE INVESTIGATION AND PROSECUTION OF CULPABLE GANG MEMBERS AND PROVEN SPONSORS.

The communique noted that the continued lethargy of the security agencies to act on the numerous petitions already submitted, has encouraged, escalated threat levels and increased physical and psychological torture to the numerous victims and the entire community as innocent lives have continuously been lost to syndicated terror attacks by Akwa Marine cultists, who are roaming freely in the community.

"The gang often boasts of their invincibility, claiming that they have the support of government machinery at different levels, and blessings of top politicians. And we have no reason so far, to doubt them".

"We are aware with incontrovertible facts that the said group enjoys the sponsorship and protection of some notable highly placed individuals, top legislators and other selfish politicians with sinister interests in and around Essien Udim LGA".

 "We are also aware that the group has spread into other communities and LGAs that share common boundary with ours, such as  Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo, and have integrated themselves fully with sister terror groups who have found safe haven in those places and continue to spread terror", the communique noted.

There has been series of petitions to the IGP, DSS, Presidency, NSA,Ministry of Justice, all of which had been duly received and acknowledged with no action whatsoever:

The communique reads, "In April 2017, Midim Traditional Council and some exiled victims appeared before the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Team A in Louis Edet House Abuja who are ostensibly in charge of the investigation and clearly stated their concerns and frustrations as captured by many print, electronic and online publications with no help in sight till date".

"After many unsuccessful efforts to attract the attention of relevant government agencies, the Traditional Council set up a Special Committee made up of Four (4) Village Heads, 5 youth leaders, and 10 other members, including the most senior clergy to explore dialogue with Akwa Marine. Mr. Monday Udo Ekanem was appointed as Chairman".

"Akwa Marine gave the unconditional release of their leader  Emmanuel Ben Umoh, as the only condition for peace. In one of the committee sittings, the Chairman personally reported that five (5) members of the gang accosted him and threatened to kill him if he did not use his position to cause immediate and unconditional release of their leader in Police custody. This threat was promptly communicated to security agencies including the IGP Monitoring team, without any action as usual".

"The group carried out that threat by assassinating the Chairman of that committee, Monday Udo Ekanem. His bullet ridden body is still in the mortuary begging for investigation. Another committee member, the acting Village of Midim Atan Village - Chief Eseme Jeremiah, was severally shot on the 30st of August but miraculously survived the assassination attempt and is undergoing medical treatment now", the community lamented.

Continuing, the community said, "Having recognized the fact that these killings and acts of terror pose grave danger to the continued survival and sustenance of our people, and are targeted at annihilating all the people who are seen by that cult group and their sponsors as enemies and indeed, leaders of the community; Having exhausted all channels of seeking the protection of government and security agencies throughout the Federal Republic of Nigeria from the killing machine of the cult group and their sponsors without success; And having severally invited all the suspected members of the group to appear and answer questions regarding their role(s) in these heinous crimes without success, the entire people of Midim community hereby resolve as follows:

"That Akwa marine cult group and indeed, all other cult groups by whatsoever name or identity and their related activities are hereby banned in and around Midim Community;

"Hence forth, anybody seen or reasonably considered of engaging in, holding a meeting or pursuing any course similar or suspected of bearing similitude with any cult or criminal activity in or around Midim Community shall ipso facto be treated as an enemy of the community with attendant unimaginable consequences;

"Midim Community is hereby declared a cult free society forthwith in the presence of security agencies, the media and other interested bodies here present;

"That suspected members of Akwa Marine cult group whose names have been identified by individuals and the community in any of the petitions before the agencies be given a final opportunity of two (2) weeks grace, starting from today to openly denounce their membership before the Traditional Council and turn a new leave;

"That all repentant members will be integrated back into the community upon their committing to be of good conduct going forward;

"That notwithstanding (ii) and (iii) above, any indigene suspected of involvement in killing, murder, assassination, kidnapping, etc. shall be made to defend himself against such allegations;

"Where the traditional council is convinced of innocence, the suspect will be absolved of any blame;

"In the event of any indictment, such a person(s) shall be be handed over to Security agents for further investigation;

" That i.t must be noted that, while the community is willing to forgive sundry crimes by the gang members, capital offences will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for investigation and prosecution. All such cases would be closely monitored;

"That the traditional council immediately investigates the recent deaths and assassination attempts of Late Monday Udo Ekanem and Chief Eseme Jeremiah respectively;

"A report on this shall be submitted to the entire community not later than 30th day of September 2017;

"The community shall submit findings and make suggestions and recommendations to relevant government agencies for necessary action on or before the 7th October 2017;

"That all key members of the gang, who had been earlier invited through their parents and family members but failed to appear to answer questions before the Traditional Council, are hereby given the last chance to do so, on or before Saturday 23rd September 2017 failing which they shall be declared “enemy of the community and would be recommended to security agents for inclusion in the criminal wanted list; "Such person(s) shall be declared persona non grata in our community and expelled;

"In the event that such a person(s) refuse(s) to voluntarily surrender, any member of the community that comes in contact with such a person, whenever and wherever such a person may be found, is by this resolution empowered to arrest or cause to be arrested such individual for immediate handover to security agents;

"That anybody in Midim Community including their families and relations that harbors any one of these criminals or willfully refuses to report them to the authorities, conceals their whereabouts, colludes, connives or conspires with them to evade arrest/capture, or hides them in any compound, farm, bush, house, church, shrine, hamlet, hut or on any soil within Midim Community shall be treated as an accessory after the fact and shall face the same consequences as in (iv) above;

"That threats, intimidation and targeting with the intention to harm any of our sons and daughters by any individual or group, external and internal, will be seen as an attack on the Midim Community as a whole. Henceforth, injury to one will be injury to all;

"That while Midim Community remains a very hospitable and accommodating community for all, we do not want our community to be used as a breeding ground for miscreants and terrorists especially now that the country is facing grievous security challenges;

"Any intending visitor or persons in transit through our communities must conduct themselves in a manner supportive of the norms and standards of Midim Community. Suspicious conducts will be discouraged and legitimately challenged;

"That we warn all politicians to desist forthwith from continuing to embolden this group and arming them to terrorize our community.  We have decided to take our destiny in our hands and protect ourselves; "Anybody who feels that he/she can levy a proxy war in our community through any cult group in whatever name called should know that nobody has monopoly of violence. We have never sponsored terror in Ukana Clan, Utu Ekpenyong or Odoro Ikot Communities and therefore, would not stand idly by to watch our children slaughtered by any gang sponsored by people from other communities;

The community advocated for better collaborative synergy, cooperation and support from the security agencies to enhance peace and crime prevention and appealed to the IGP to direct Police Monitoring Team A to work with the State Commissioner of Police and Essien Udim DPO to conclude all pending investigations over this age long crisis by ensuring that all suspects especially the alleged sponsors of the gang are apprehended, investigated and prosecuted immediately to serve as a deterrent.

Crime / Retired Ndic Staff Assassinated By Suspected Cultists In Akwa Ibom by sisimmi: 2:27pm On Aug 11, 2017
Darkness, fear, anxiety and shock have descended on the serene community of Midim Nto Udo Village since early this morning, when news filtered out that a retired staff of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation - Mr. Monday Udo Ekanem has been assassinated by suspected members of the dreaded Akwa Marine Cult group in Midim Community, Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom State.

Eye witnesses say that the unfortunate father of 5, ran into an ambush set up by the gang around his house in Nto Udo Village last night at about 9.20pm while returning home. The attackers were said to have pumped several rounds of bullets into Ekanem's chest at the entrance to his compound, killing him instantly before they fled.

This follows series of such unsolved crimes by the same cult group that has been rocking Midim community in the past 7 years. Investigation reveals that the late Ekanem was until his death, Chairman of Midim Community Peace and Reconciliation Committee. He is said to have led efforts to find lasting solution to the havoc wrecked on the community by Akwa Marine - a terror group that has been linked to several other assassinations, robbery and kidnapping. The leader and founder of the group - Honorable Emmanuel Ben Umoh (a former Councillor) is presently standing trial for murder and robbery at the High Court of Ikot Ekpene, while other members have continued to roam free. Midim Community has known no peace since 2011.

The group came to limelight when they launched a daring daylight kidnap of a prominent indegene of the area (name withheld) in 2011. The victim escaped after 2 days. In 2015, the same group attempted to assassinate 2 other indegenes (names also withheld) who they suspected, could work against their interest. This too was foiled by villagers who rescued the victims just before their slaughter at the village shrine. In 2016, the group killed and roasted 2 boys at Nsong Eto Market Square. the victims' body parts were removed and sold for ritual purposes. Since then, they have conducted several daytime raids in the local market and have robbed hundreds more of citizens of property worth millions on Naira.

The cult group enjoys patronage of several politicians, traditional rulers, religious leader, etc. including a prominent vocal former Governor of Akwa Ibom. Their reach has grown in audacity and bestiality in the past decade. Their activities have severally been reported by the community to the Police, DSS, Army, Presidency, National Assembly, etc. Still, they have continued to create mayhem in Midim Community. Law enforcement agents are completely unwilling to help as they are said to have drawn up an operating hitlist for more assassinations. The community is now a ghost town.

Politics / Re: Inibehe Effiong: Count Senator Akpabio Out Of Your Phantom Assassination Plot by sisimmi: 1:18pm On Feb 20, 2017
The crumbs-from-the-table-eaters of Godswill Akpabio want everyone to believe that Akwa Ibom State is the Biblical Canaan on earth. They talk of the e-library (whatever that means); they boast of road construction (as if the basic function of a government does not include provisions for road construction, or as if the money used in constructing the roads are returns from personal investments of Godswill Akpabio). The funniest joke is their cling to a useless phrase, which makes no sense to anyone; the “Uncommon Transformation.”

Even the crumb-eaters have no idea what it means. Every time I hear this phrase, it would remind me of the past one---"Akwa Ibom ado

OK"--- which had been extinct a long time ago into the abyss, because Akwa Ibom State is not OK, and will never be OK, as long as Godswill Akpabio continues to loot the treasury of the people.

It is clear that Akwa Ibom State is not as blissful as the crumb-eaters would want us to believe. For several months now, unknown to many due to a clamp-down on the media, there have been systemic killings in Akwa Ibom State, under the direction of Godswill Akpabio.

I call it systemic because the order for such gruesome acts comes directly from Godswill Akpabio. The killings cut across all ethnic lines in the State, though majority of the dead are men and women of Ibibio extraction.

For instance, just a few days ago, reports have confirmed of several killings in Etim Ekpo and at least 10 people were killed in Oruk Anam alone. The mainstream media could not report all these heinous crimes because of threats to their lives and livelihood by Godswill Akpabio.

Needless to mention, all the killings are camouflaged to make it appear as political conflicts, as it re-surfaced in the recently concluded State-wide Councillor Primary Election.

Fortunately, once in a while, information about the discreet killing would filter out to the public. A couple of days ago, a frequent contributor to the social fora by the name of Mr. Clayton Udoh wrote; "Mr. Mfon Effiong is dead. Mrs. Ikwo Nkereuwem was beaten to a pulp in Orue-Offiong, Oruku. The list of casualties goes on and on. However some people have come into the forum to give the State Chairman of PDP a pat on the back, "for the most transparent and credible primaries/elections so far". I called home yesterday and asked how is the elections going. My beloved family member said it is a thug affair and that honest citizens stay in their homes and forget the democracy BS."

In my inquisitive mind to uncover why Godswill Akpabio is doing all the killings, I have received several information from those who are close to Akpabio. In order not give a clue which would lead to any of my sources, or informants, I will try to be cautious as I narrate here what I have been told so far.

None of my sources know who, but they all say that Akpabio had been hinted by someone within the hierarchy of the federal government that as soon as he leaves the office, various human rights organizations, and at least one Nigerian agency (probably the SSS) may put Akpabio on trial for all or some of the major allegations leveled against him for human rights abuses (as in the death of Paul Inyang and the arrest of Chief Ononokpono), corruption (including the US$3.1 million, which was intercepted at an Abuja Airport), and money laundering, which includes using various construction firms as a conduit to transfer his stolen loots to foreign accounts.

Sources say Akpabio has been confiding to a few of his confidante of his fears regarding what awaits him as soon as he leaves the office during which he would no longer be covered by the Immunity Clause. It is said that some, with whom he confided in, recommended that he should begin now to deal with (eliminate) those who may be invited as witnesses to testify against him in the court of law. In other words, Akpabio should kill those who have been killing for him. This may explain the root causes of the recent quiet waves of killings in Akwa Ibom State.

Moving on.....
Oyong Asuquo Oyong and Why Godswill Akpabio killed him

Those who knew Oyong Asuquo Oyong say he was a terrible man, who had committed several crimes for Godswill Akpabio. One source said that only God, Akpabio, and Oyong Asuquo are the only ones who know how many lives he snuffed out for Akpabio.

Oyong Asuquo Oyong was a criminal, whose life of crime was nurtured and sustained by Godswill Akpabio. On March 5, 2009, at the funeral ceremony of Chief Emenyi at Oron, Oyong Asuquo Oyong, then a Commissioner for Rural Development in Akpabio's Government, was reported to be behind the incident which nearly caused ethnic war between the Ibibio and Annang on one side and the Oron nation on the other side.

Commenting on the incident, on March 5, 2010, I wrote the following; “According to reliable sources, the main reason people chartered buses (as many as 70 of them) full of people to attend the burial of Emenyi was because they knew that Obong Victor Attah was going to be at the funeral. But Akpabio's thugs, led by the Commissioner for Rural Development, Oyong Asuquo Oyong, did not want Attah's people to attend the funeral because of the fear that Akpabio would be booed by Obong Attah's supporters. According to reports, Obong Attah himself was not yet at the funeral when the busses arrived--he was on his way from Abuja.”

A further report on the incident was a write-up, which was posted on both Ibom and IbibioNation fora by an eye-witness to the event, who was also a contributor to the fora, by the name of Emma Udoekong. This is what he wrote on March 5, 2010; “The Commissioner (Oyong Asuquo), who was seen brandishing an AK -47 gun, mobilized thugs and with men said to be with Army and MOPOL (Mobile Police) uniforms said to have been made by Akpabio for 2011 elections, blocked the entry of Victor Attah's supporters of about 4 luxurious buses, with over 300 supporters inside, as over 20,000 people were mobilized from all the

31 local government, including Cross River, Abia, and River states.”

No one knows exactly when Godswill Akpabio made up his mind to kill Oyong Asuquo Oyong. But sources say Oyong Asuquo Oyong, who is of Oron extraction, had tried to influence the outcome of the recently concluded Councilorship Election in his area by providing a list, which contained the names of those he selected as candidates. Reports say Godswill Akpabio opposed the list, but Oyong insisted on his choice.

The next day, at about 4 o'clock in the morning, someone placed a telephone call to Oyong with a message that His Excellency wanted to see him to discuss the list. Oyong was excited. He got up. Left his wife, dressed up, boarded his car, and drove out, leaving his security details behind, all to see His Excellency. Within few minutes, according to a very reliable source, Oyong Asuquo was shot, while still driving. The gun-shot cajoled him into losing control of his car, where he either hit a fixed structure, such as a tree or an idle car, or was hit by another car in motion, which was coming in the opposite direction.

It is not clear how exactly Oyong ended up at the hospital or who exactly took him for medical attention. But, according to reports, shortly after Oyong was admitted in the hospital, Godswill Akpabio paid him a visit---an unprecedented visit, ever, for anyone by Godswill Akpabio. Reports say when Akpabio visited, Oyong was still breathing, or at least still gasping for air. He wife was also by his bed-side.

Then his wife broke down and went on his knees begging when Godswill Akpabio ordered the medical attendants to remove Oyong's body (still

breathing) and transfer to the mortuary. Oyong's wife begged.

“Please,” she pleaded, “let's pray for him. He will wake up. See, he is still breathing. Please don't put him in the mortuary. He is still breathing. Please let's pray for him.” She wanted to place a phone call to the Pastor of her church. But Akpabio stood his ground and did not leave the hospital until he was sure Oyong Asuquo Oyong was thrown into the morgue and pronounced dead.

As soon as Oyong was pronounced dead, Akpabio ordered a press conference. In front of the hurriedly set up camera lenses, Akpabio sobbed and was pouring encomiums on Oyong Asuquo. What a devil incarnate!

The death of Oyong Asuquo Oyong is giving Godswill Akpabio the internal peace of mind (or so he thinks) that he has been able to get rid of another future witness who could have been summoned to testify against him for his crimes against humanity. A few weeks before Oyong was killed, another crook, which used to kill for Akpabio, was also killed. That was Charles Umana, who wanted to be the Chairman of his Local Government Area.

Akpabio can and will continue to kill those he used in the past to commit his diabolical acts. And let this message serve as a warning to those who were in secret deals with Godswill Akpabio that sooner or later, you will be targeted for elimination.

The truth is, no matter how much he kills, Godswill Akpabio will never be able to eliminate everyone. Hitler of Germany couldn't. The Shah of Iran couldn't. Momma Ghadafy couldn't. Saddam Hussein couldn't. None of the world's devils, including Abacha of Nigeria, was able to eliminate every tool of his or her destruction. Therefore, Akpabio will also not be able to eliminate every one of those he hired to do the killing for him in order for him stay in power. As he kills, God Almighty is watching. At the right time, God will take his decision, just as he did with King Pharaoh of Egypt, who thought he was the Alpha and Omega

THE INTERNET NEVER FORGETS!
