Health / Re: My Nephew Has Autism, How Do We Manage It? by Sissy3(f): 7:37pm On Sep 17, 2012
*dhtml:

One of my greatest fears too, as a medical doctor i know much about it and it scares the shit out of me. A friend of mine has a child that is suffering from the condition, i was freaked out when i met the child and i never spoke to the child again after i found out - but my friend does not agree (maybe she does not know what autism is - and i did not stress me).

I am sorry to say this (forget that i am a doctor), but i see people with autism like - SCHIZOPHRENICS (ashiere) - I know there is a lot of difference, but that is my own perception.

how can you even say such? they shouldnt even be in the same sentences if you truly read your statements slowly and backwards

Ladies,

Mrs Chima has the right to her opinions, while the contents of the those opinions might be up for debate, it is still hers. No need for personal attacks. Please.

Mrs Chima,

I'm sure these ladies here have heard of adoption, discussed it and thought about it, but still chose to continue on this process, that i think, is something that should be respected. Infertility is a difficult and personal struggle and unless you have being in those shoes and walked in them, you might never truly understand how this ladies here feel or anyone else with such pain. It is even more painful being a Nigerian woman with such difficulty. so, your adoption comments, may seem harmless and it is, the appropriateness of place and timing of it, might be a bit insensitive. you can always start up a thread on adoption and discuss it in full length. And if i may add, adoption these days is just as tedious, costly and emotionally draining as these fertility treatments and this something most people aren't aware of especially those who find it easy to suggest such options to anyone going through infertility--

----------
Please this is a SUPPORT thread for these ladies who chose this process fully aware of other options. Let's try hard and stick to it.

ehie: i have some questions is there a quiet phase, can one get well without lithum or any treatment.how can one get a proper diagnosis instead of self diagnosing

care usually depend on the phase of the disease the person is experiencing.

During the ACUTE PHASE which is characterized by acute mania, the main goal of tx is reduction of mania symptoms
During the MAINTENANCE PHASE characterized by increased ability to function, relapse prevention through medication therapy, psychotherapy and education is the goal of tx
lastly, during the CONTINUATION PHASE characterized by remission of symptoms, tx generally continues throughout the person's lifetime.and prevention of future manic episodes is the goal tx.

if you dont mind me asking, were you dx by a psychiatrist, and are you seeing one now

tee_sexy: As someone who has been diagnosed with BP, it is a very challenging issue with varying highs and lows. Currently on lithium, sodium valporate and Lamotrigine. It affected my marriage and is very disruptive especially the highs and lows after each other. Have seen psychologists as well. Self management is key even though at times it is hard to be bothered. Awareness and understanding and good family, mental health team, friends support network really helps too. Over 11 yrs now with a few admissions, initial ones more extreme. Was preparing for a sports competition on 1st admission. It is now easier but not simpler. In the time I have finished DegreeN while working part time, finished Msc (part time) while working full time and with a very young family. Stress is sometimes a trigger and I have never smoked weed. Glad to see positive and informed comments on NL. Hope this helps with ur quest for answers and it is something that needs to be Discussed and aired, as sometimes we just cover it up as Kolo, madness or someone doin u. Still trusting God for total healing. And to g*** spoilers pls add something productive and helpful even if u want to mention d now unmentionable smiley. Will see if I can add some websites

Thanks for sharing your experience. Mental health disorder discussion is something people shy away because of our society perception of people with such yet it is something many people struggle with everyday. more open discussion is certainly needed on mental health disorders because it is real and nothing to be ashamed of and there is help and treatment available for suffers

ACM10: Many posters has done so much justice to this topic that there is little or nothing left for me to add.

(Bi)polar disorder , just like its name sounds is a psychiatric disorder that straddles between two poles/phase.
Rep. Jackson was recently diagnosed of bipolar disoder and is presently on treatment.

We have:
Bipolar I and Bipolar II disorders.

Bipolar I disorder includes episodes of both mania(very elevated mood) and major depression.
Bipolar II disorder includes episodes of both hypomania(elevated mood, but not as severe as in mania) and major depression.

Conditions that predict bipolar disorder include:
1. Depression characterized by psychotic symptoms or psychomotor retardation.
2. Mania or hypomania after antidepressant drug therapy.

Lithium is the drug of choice in treating mania. Lithium is used to control aggressive behaviour and enhance the activity of antidepressants.
Anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine and valproic acid are also used to treat mania.

P.S: Electroconvulsive therapy(ECT) has no place in the management of mania. But it can be used in severe depression when other modalities has failed!

Say only what you are certainly sure of please. it is not part of normal course of treatment but can be used in extreme manic behavior to help subdue it when mood stabilizers and other pharmacological therapy have failed. note the keywords there-'extreme' and 'failure' of mood stabilizers.

it may also used for people who are suicidal or those with rapid cycling

Health / Re: A discussion on Bipolar Disorder by Sissy3(f): 6:07pm On Sep 10, 2012
some behaviors shown with bipolar disorders include:

mania: when they have abnormally elevated mood, can be described as expansive or irritable
hypo-mania: a less severe episode of mania that last at least 4 days accompanied by 3-4 symptoms of mania
mixed episode : when the person experiences both a manic episode and episode of major depression simultaneously
rapid cycling: when the person experiences episodes of acute mania within 1 year
Health / Re: A discussion on Bipolar Disorder by Sissy3(f): 5:58pm On Sep 10, 2012
They are mood disorders with recurrent episodes of depression and mania.

medications for it include mood stabilizers such as lithium carbonate, antiepilectic agents that act as mood stabilizers-such as valproic acid, lamictal, neurotin and topax. also, benzodiazepines such as ativan can be used on a short term basis for a someone experiencing sleep impairment related to the manic phase of the disorder.

other therapeutic procedures can be use include ECT-Electroconvulsive therapy to subdue extreme manic behavior especially when medications have not helped

Tgirl4real:

Yea, my dear. I'm assertive, but some people tend to mention it as one of my weaknesses. As in...she's too assertive...u get!

Me sef dey wonder say dis place don turn dry land. Lol

My baby is 20 months and the questions are less. What I'm bothered with now is finding a school for her. One she can stay till she finishes her primary or at least nursery. I don't want to be changing her up n down. I feel it will be emotionally draining for her even at dat age. What do u think?

not surprising especially given our culture and view of women. our culture generally don't encourage assertive communication in girls/women at least the older generation. so when you are that assertive, more than likely it will be misconstrued as being more on the aggressive side esp as a woman.not denying the fact there are certain ppl who can fall on the extreme side of each though.

take your time with the school search. i wouldnt encourage up/down change too unless it is absolutely necessary
