Very good question. You see, I tell women that complain about MILs that they too will do the same thing to their DILs except they learn how to loosen the imaginary umbilical cord they have with their children. Women are attached to their children both male and female. The only difference is that for their female daughters, once the husband draws his territory, they resist. Or else if you give them the opportunity, they will do the same thing to the man who married their daughter.

For the boys, especially if she had an abusive relationship. She puts all her heart into making him a man she never had. She cannot then imagine that one girl comes from nowhere to take her son that she stomached for 9 months, washed his bum, grew his teeth and worried so much for years and gbam! One outside girl is now in his control. But she also cannot have her son to herself too. She never wants to admit this publicly. Women know themselves. They know the game they play. It is easier for a fellow woman to detect the BS of her own species faster than a man. The problem with women is detachment, sometimes because of their nurturing nature. She has claimed ownership and now her rights to ownership is going to a young woman. This is another reason why women compete. They all do. If a man marries another woman, she is immediately a threat. Even if that man was not one she loved and abused him, she will be surprised that another woman can see something in him and wants him. This is also another reason why when couples divorce, the man can move on but the woman usually wants everything about the man to be brought down so he never rises again. Women love control in their own space. So that MIL is only frustrated because the love she has poured to her son is now going to someone else. It's a double whammy if her husband doesn't give a damn about her, now who does she turn to? Women love attention. If you're a mummy's boy, you will have a difficult time removing the umbilical cord. If you're a mummy's girl, you will use your own hand to destroy your own house because you will tell her everything she doesn't need to know about your new home. It goes both ways. The mothers have to learn how to detach and let their children grow in their new homes without their help except where necessary. The children also need to mature and become their own men and women without a prescription from moms. This is why fathers don't have problems. They already knew that day was coming. Men also have ego, so they would rather stay in their own homes than receive second hand embarrassment. Hope this helps.
