Well, I think you have a point there but consider this the pocket of the church needs more to help grow the spiritual standard of its members, to evangelize and gather more souls and also to do greater charity works. All theists I've come across in this section have one thing in common; they lack the ability to think critically without resorting to blind arguments and emotional outbursts. Your rant above is an example.

That said, prayers can act as a positive force of hope and when people pray believing that a white bearded sky daddy listens and answers them, they actually feel happier. Hence, the brain releases feel good hormones like dopamine, endorphine. The result is better sleep for the individual; classic placebo effect.
