Education / Kendra Jumbo: First Class ABSU Med. Lab. Science Best Graduating Student (Photos by Skyken99(m): 11:52am On Feb 03, 2018
It was a moment of Joy for Miss Kendra JUMBO U a student of Abia state University, Uturu who after five (5) solid years in the university graduated as the first time student to have a first class in her faculty. She went home with Four (4) Awards namely

1) Best Graduating Student
2) Best Academic Student
3) Best Microbiology Student
4) Medical Laboratory Scientist association of Nigeria Abia state Chapter Best Academic Student of the year.

This achievement started some five years back when she accepted an admission offer to study MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE. She diligently carried out all required of her as a student.

Beyond her Academic schedules, Kendra is not lacking in her Social Life.

She wasn't found wanting as she totally submitted to a place she regards as the best family in School, the Seven Days Adventist church Absu. Her love for the things of God kept her closer to God.

Her five years wasn't a waste after all. Today the 1st of February, 2018 as at 1pm Kendra was inducted as a licenced Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Now after an engaging and long 5 years in school Kendra JUMBO is going home to meet her family as an award winning Medical Laboratory Scientist.. what a day to show forth in a grand style.

"Daddy we brought the awards home" she exclaimed....

What a happy day for her as family members, well wishers, lovers and even enemies gather in joy to celebrate their own.

Congratulations Kendra JUMBO.

UbanmeUdie:
shocked

The medical world in Nigeria has been plagued with title controversies, headship of departments saga, salary structure chaos and host of other anomalies.

The stethoscope may be a batch proudly worn by doctors and nurses and have since been exclusively used as a means of identifying both student and practicing physicians.

However, this does not place a ban on its usage by other health professionals who are trained to do so for the purpose of establishing a medical evaluation or judgement when such is required. I am aware that in the training of medical lab scientists, stethoscopes and b.p check apparatus are not part of their instrumentation but they are exposed to it in 200 Level and 300 Level where they take physiology courses and practicals as well as their sworn rivals in medicine and surgery. Such knowledge may not be sufficient but one may choose to enhance such study by other means or avenues if interested.

In the same vein, there are some doctors who secretly run urinalysis and blood sugar test using acucheck in their consulting room for patients. This is common in many general hospitals in Nigeria. This ought to be exclusively the duty of a med lab. Scientist.

Pharmacists are also trained to use the stethoscope, this I am aware of particularly those running the D.Pharm programmme.

Physiotherapists also make use of the stethoscope alot.

Even those being trained for first aid like the red cross and other paramedics use the stethoscope. THERE IS NO BIG DEAL IN USING IT!

I am however concerned that a medical lab scientist would use it as a badge on the day of his induction. That actually is a problem with the person in question and not the profession. I guess he was carried away with the excitement and hailings from the ignorant well wishers, perhaps the cheers of doc! doc!! stirred up such display of ignorance and falsehood.

The fellow simply lacked the necessary orientation to excel in the profession he got inducted into and should be forgiven instead of being roasted online by doctors who think ! they are next to God.

The hard truth really is, a physician needs a medical lab. Scientist as well as a surgeon needs a radiographer or sonographer.

If only everyone will learn to respect each other in the health sector and do their jobs rather than dragging titles and teasing each other and all what not, i am sure we won't be having this sort of issues and misconceptions.

A fantastic piece!

The reply below from a medical laboratory scientist

A big congratulations to all my colleagues, the latest
MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST. In great joy i welcome
you on board. Surely the journey wasn’t easy but thank God
you all came out successfully.
A medical laboratory scientist is a qualified well registered
and licenced vital health care detective that functions in
uncovering and providing laboratory information from
laboratory analysis which is basically aimed at assisting the
clinician in the diagnosis of a patient state of health,
monitoring disease progression, treatment and prevention of
diseases. This laboratory analysis is carried out by utilizing
the tools in the various departments in medical laboratory
science which include medical microbiology, chemical
pathology, heamatology, histopathology, immunology, etc.
This great profession has its outstanding uniqueness.
This post is purely an expression of the mind, and i wish
that the readers of this post should do so in perfect
understanding, it is in no way aimed at degrading or
uplifting anybody or profession.
I have completely remained an ardent, passionate and proud
medical laboratory scientist and will continually do so.
I wish to speak on issues on ground which we all possibly in
one way or the other might know about.wella
Medical profession to my own understanding is a generic
term which incorporates various specialties though in our
society a striking distinction have always been used which
is the medical sector and the health sector. what is medical
without health and what is health without medical, well
nevertheless the both are what i call the medical profession.
Misrepresentation has been a great challenge in this field. I
am from ututu in Arochukwu L.G.A of Abia State and not the
other way round, that is Abia State, Arochukwu L.G.A Ututu.
The Generic name is ok but to be known and identified
better the specific name is required which is best. If u come
looking for me in my house and call oti, it could either be my
dad, my mum or siblings but when you call oti Daniel, trust
me i will be called upon immediately.
Induction into the medical profession is ok but it is better
this way ‘’ induction as a medical laboratory scientist’’ or
induction into the medical profession as a medical
laboratory scientist. What is ok might not actually be
basically right, the right is always the best.
There are several medical equipment employed in the
medical profession , and each sector carries out their duty
with the medical equipment specific to them. Nevertheless
some equipment cuts across other fields and can even be
used by non medical professionals.
A typical example is the stethoscope, surely has it a variety
of functions, According to Merriam Webster dictionary ‘’ it is
a medical instrument for detecting sounds produced in the
body that are conveyed to the ears of the listener through
rubber tubing connected with a piece placed upon the area
to be examined’’ but it is generally employed mostly is
checking a patients’ blood pressure. This procedure can be
done by a non medical personnel who has been trained in
using this instrument in routinely monitoring the blood
pressure of someone, for example A son who studied a
science course and has a mother who is a known
hypertensive patient may decide to acquire the skill to be
able to monitor the mothers blood pressure instead of going
to the hospital everyday but on a notice of any discrepancy
in the readings gotten will sure visit the hospital for
necessary action by the clinicians. Same applies to the use
of glucometer in monitoring sugar level which several
people have in their homes now. Also the stethoscope can
be used in the blood bank laboratory in checking donors
blood pressure because i know blood donation is
contraindicated among hypertensive prospective donors.
But owing to this general usage, the medical doctors make
more use of it in there day to day activities. Infact when you
get to the hospital, on sighting anyone with a stethoscope,
surely will you conclude he or she is a medical Doctor. Yea
the Nurses also uses it same with the optometrist and other
medical professionals.
When you talk about ophthalmoscope, you talk about the
optometrist. That is the uniqueness of a particular
equipment to a particular profession. When you talk about
Microscopes basically you talk about the medical laboratory
scientist. Other professionals can still make use of the
microscope, it is generally used in viewing minute particles
but it is more unique and useful to a medical laboratory
scientist.
On stepping into the university community and sighting a
student putting on a black and white with a good tie, first
thing your mind will tell you is that this is a law student, that
is there uniqueness, on sighting a clean white and white
with a tie, you will sure conclude it is an optometry student,
etc
Being unique remains a beautiful virtue that we all should
imbibe that. I am a medical laboratory scientist and i have
my uniqueness ‘’ejirimara m’’ what i am known for.
For the Doctor title issue, the last time i checked we are still
known with prestige as medical laboratory scientist Till
further notice.
For everyone that has commented on this issue with
diplomacy, i commend you and for those that have
commented using vain or hate words, refrain from such
display of unwise act. The fact remains that everyone in this
world is perfectly unique and relevant, a barrow pusher is as
much relevant as a gate man same with a taxi driver, a
lawyer, a sociologist, a political analyst and so on, they have
got a particular problem to solve in the society, no human
being is a jack of all trade.
I have spoken my mind, thank you.

Statistically, its still the same thing with the previous grading system.

Previously first class =4.5-5
NEW first class =3.5-4

Example
Mr A offerred 7 courses

NEW OLD
GRADING GRADING
SYSTEM SYSTEM
COURSE 1 2units A 4×2=8 5×2=10
COURSE 2 2units A 4×2=8 5×2=10
COURSE 3 2units A 4×2=8 5×2=10
COURSE 4 3units A 4×3=12 5×3=15
COURSE 5 3units A 4×3=12 5×3=15
COURSE 6 3units B 3×3=9 4×3=12
COURSE 7 3units C 3×2=6 3×3=9
=18units =63 =81
63/18 81/18
=3.5 =4.5

Recall NEW GRADING SYSTEM FIRST CLASS =3.5 - 4
OLD GRADING SYSTEM FIRST CLASS =4.5-5

THUS, BOTH ARE almost the same thing.
