OfoIgbo: The attachment you sent clearly shows that Ubani people, who were mainly Ndoki people, also referred to Ubani as Okoloma (which is also the name of a town in Ndoki)
Nowhere in that writeup was it stated that Ijaws owned Ubani.
Okoloma is more of an Ndoki town. Otherwise is there any Ijaw town named Okoloma. Don't tell me OKOLOAMA. Every time on Opobo groups the Ijaw wannabes and Izon agents always call the town Opuboama which is a terrible aberration. Everything they will attach an ama at the tail to Ijawnize it. One day you will hear Ubaniama. |

JANK23H: The Portuguese account were written in Portuguese as expected, and so would not have had comparable circulation as that of the British. However, there have been recent translation and reviews of expedition into Africa by Duarte Pacheco Pereira and VALENTIM FERNANDES.
Attached is a screenshot of Captain Pereira's 15th century account, recognizing the presence of the Ijos or Jos as he called them then.Though some of his remarks were not complimentary, this could be attributed his strained relationship with the Ijos(Jos) as against the cordial trade partnership he had with the Benin kingdom.
This account should put to rest the notion that the Ijos were not original inhabitants of the NigerDelta.

Can we see the Portuguese account as well, especially where it says anything otherwise? I can bet that any Portuguese account would still call Ubani an Igbo territory. |

It was on the same expedition he recorded where Prince Tchukuma designed a cloth that looks like a dutch design even after only seeing it once! He witnessed it and then he made a drawing.
he used that drawing to make the front cover of his book eventually. That was one of the most amazing things he witnessed.
Horton renarrated the story in his book a few years later. Excellent. |

Malawian: I am also curious about why Edo people uses the same 4 market days as Igbos. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Igbos used to live there indigenously in times past. After all, it has been scientifically proven that Igbo ais the oldest surviving tribe in all that is know as Nigeria today.
Also (make I find small trouble) Ile Ife belonged to Igbos until Moremi. Yoruba used to be a Northern tribe pushed downwards to their present space. Little wonder Fulani is creating villages in what is know as Yorubaland and Yorubas can't say pim, because even they are settlers there. Igbo occupied the Bini area in times past. |

Shiver99: We often use European/western accounts when discussing the coasts of Nigeria, as they extensively traded and interacted with its inhabitants and wrote detailed reports.
However tales of the Igbo hinterland has to be studied with far more care as they were often not first person accounts. Especially when you realise that as far as the late 19th century, most of Igboland was a no-go zone for foreigners.
To illustrate this point, for some time Europeans believed that Aboh was the head of Igboland. It made sense as the Aboh dominated lower delta trade and their coastal neighbours with their war canoes. Their town much larger and significant than anything seen on the coast.
This went challenged until natives informed them that there were towns 3 times its size far further in the hinterland with more industry. Some foreigners took the time and it shows in the accuracy of their work/accounts. |

You really need to get a job.... seriously. I just came back from work. About Boro. Boro was guilty of war crimes in Bonny and Opobo during the war as he discovered to his dismay Biafra had high support in both towns and were harbouring Biafran soldiers in action at the coast. He killed whole families on discovery one or two members were Biafra apologists. Burnt down family homes if he saw any Biafra insignia therein. Boro's actions are well known. But I don't think his actions in Bonny and Opobo have ever been well discussed. |

Ekealterego: "The Bonny amphibious landing was a combined operation undertaken by soldiers of the Third Marine Commando led by the Nigerian navy. It was the first amphibious landing in Africa by an independent African state. Because of the terrain of Bonny and also because of the sabotage carried by Biafran sympathizers in the Nigerian navy on the naval ships, the Biafran military authority grossly underestimated the competency of the Nigerian navy to blockade Biafra or to amphibiously land on Biafra. Despite the sabotage and other setbacks suffered from the Nigerian navy, it got itself prepared for the war and indeed successfully landed the soldiers of the 3MCDO on the Biafran beaches and bombarded the Biafrans until the foot soldiers were able to fix their feet on the dry ground. Meanwhile, Biafra was very smart in opening another front in the war which compelled the Federal forces to be thinned down in Bonny in order to defend the Midwestern region. The thinning down of the Federal forces in Bonny enabled the Biafrans to launch a very heavy offensive in Bonny to retake the town but their effort was again thwarted by the Nigerian navy. The activities of the Federal navy contributed immensely to the victory of the Federal government because they secured Bonny and its oil installations, thereby making the Federal government to be in control of the oil installations which was vital to the prosecution of the war."

However, given the time, he drwe important perspective up till the split from Kogi and further dispersal. I am not sure, I cannot tell. He started it from North Africa, from around Eggypt and those areas and examined how Mohamedism pursued them further south. he drew inference from how Islam also drove Fulanis down south until they embraced it and used it as a tool to conquer the Hausa and their vision to reach the Atlantic. It was interesting. Seems Horton may have been a seasoned anthropologist. |

Igboid: Ututu is not an offshoot of Arochukwu. They are independent group of their own, but as expected, they are related to Arochukwu.
I have a hypothesis that the Igbo came to our current location through a Northern direction. But at Kogi, there was a split. One group took the direction of Edo and the other took the direction of Benue and then Cross River. The groups that took Edo direction gave rise to the Indigenous Igbo tribes in Anioma, those who took Benue direction ended up in Ikwo, Ezza,Izzi. Those who took Cross River direction ended up forming Bende, Arochukwu, Ututu,Ohafia, Abiriba. Others moved straight from Kogi to Anambra River area and formed the Nri and Nsukka groups. All these groups now kept pushing down until they all met each other again within Abia and Imo state. Kept pushing until they reached the coasts (Bonny). I believe during these journey, many Igbos were left along the way, and they settled with their non Igbo neighbors and lost their Igbo language.
When you listen to Abiriba, Bende history, you hear of origin from Cross River direction, yet the name of their ancestors were all Igbos. For example the ancestor of Abiriba was called "Nnachioke" So I came to the conclusion that these ancestors were Igbos on the move who had to pass through non Igbo territories, settled amongst them, acquired wives and friends from there who joined in their journey, until they settled to where they are currently stationed. They also in typical Igbo manner acquired cultural practices of these people.
That's my rational explanation of the Igbo migration and the irreconcilable stories of ancestors who were said to be Edo, Cross River, Igala , etc, yet all bore Igbo names and have their ancestors speaking Igbo. A Northern direction : Egypt. Some of us should not be quick to disparage the Israel migration theory/thesis. |

Igboid: True. Bonny and Opobo dialects remain unmistakably Ndoki.
Where one is Oli, and Woman is not Nwanyi but Nwenyere or something like that. If the slaves who were mainly of Isu origin were the dominant Igbo population of Bonny, the Igbo dialect of Bonny and Opobo would have taken a closer resemblance to central Igbo dialects of the Isuama where one is Otu and Woman is Nwanyi.
I completely concur with you. The influence of Igbo slaves in Bonny is deliberately exaggerated to obscure the overwhelming Indigenous Ndoki Igbo presence on the island before the commencement of slave trade. Ehen! Ahn ahn. Ö rozi ndi Igbo k'anyi bu. If they were that many, Bonny dialect would have become very mixed in content. But it is not. It is still very much Ndoki. Thank you. |

Alabo7978: Well, good of you to ask. The bonnys migrated from kolokuma in search of their brethren who had left earlier. This was the great dispersion by the children of ijo who were at the time finding new settlements when they became men. Ask the Bonny man today where they come from, they will ALWAYS tell you kolokuma. Now get out of here you fool. Stop talking rubbish. The people who migrated from Kolokuma are recorded to have gone West, settling across the Western Niger Delta coast in today's Delta, Edo etc. All of them have one language which is Izon. The Eastern migration was into today's Nembe, Kalabari then at a much different time, Okrika. The people on ground when the Izon arrived this areas is disputed. It may Igbos, it may be Ibibiod groups. Or they may have gotten there first. But because of contact with this several groups their language diverged from Izon and is now scarcely intelligible with Izon. Same with their culture. Nembe, Kalabari and Okrika have aspects of their cultures that are totally different from Izon. As for the farthest point downstream, that area is documented to have been discovered by Okpala Ndoli and his group (in some accounts, while on a hunting expedition). This area was named Okoloma after their town name in Ndoki upstream. And then onwards Ndoki expanded and populated the island. N:B I fear the impact and number of the slaves who remained on the island is exaggerated. If they were that populous the dialect on the island would be considerably different from Ndoki upstream. But as far as we know it is not. |

Igboid: Nah. We should let them be. The people are not Igbo speaking, we can't send them out of a land they now call ancestral lands. Ututu ancestors messed up. When you want to give visitors land, you give them lands in your centre where you surround them, and not at your boundaries where they share boundary with their brothers who they speak a language you don't understand.
Those lands are lost forever.

That's the logic the Ijaw man is presenting to show that Bonny is Ijaw. Wherever the German was at the time of documenting was a predominantly Ibani village. Hence they described Bonny from their own perspective. |

Igboid: Ututu is in Abia. But they lost large squats of their territories to the Efiks they accomodated in the past as customary tenants. Immediately after the war, those Efiks started demanding to be returned to their kin and kiths in Odukpani LGA in Cross River, Ututu people insisted that they can return to Odukpani but not with Ututu lands that Ututu gave to them when they lost their own homeland in Odukpani during a war. The case was taken to FG and as always, the Hausa-Fulanis eager to shrink Igboland as much as possible ruled in favor of the Efiks, so they were added to Odukpani and Ututu people lost a huge amount of their lands.
