Arise, O compatriots
Nigeria's call obey
To serve our fatherland
With love and strength and faith
These are the first four lines of the Nigerian National
Anthem. It calls on all the citizens to heed the call of the
nation and to serve it with three principles, love, strength
and faith. Love for the fatherland, strength in hard times
and faith that Nigeria will conquer any obstacle. These are
the three characteristics every Nigerian should have.
Serving the fatherland means you can be called on to
defend Nigeria at any time. The labour of our heroes past Shall never be in vain. The next two lines remind us not to forget the sacrifices of our founding fathers and people who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Examples of these people are Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Abubakar Tafewa Balewa , Nigerian soldiers, MKO Abiola etc. To serve with heart and might One nation bound in freedom Peace and unity. The last three lines add two more things Nigerians need to serve the country- heart and might. If the next line of the anthem is anything to go by, Nigeria is meant to be a progressive country- " bound in freedom. " The last line of the first stanza paints a picture of an ideal Nigeria- united and peaceful. Oh God of creation Direct our noble cause And guide our leaders right Help our youth the truth to know The first line of the second stanza is a plea to God to help Nigeria with three things- direct the affairs of the nation, help our leaders to make the right decision and give understanding to our young men and women. The plea to God reflects the deep religious sentiments in Nigeria. In love and honesty to grow And living just and true These two lines are a continuation of the prayer to God, the future of the country should mature with love and honesty, guided by truth. This is the second time love appears in the national anthem. Great lofty heights attain To build a nation where peace And justice shall reign. Nigeria is an ambitious country that wants to achieve great things. Peace comes up the second time in the national anthem and ends with the declaration that justice will be supreme. This affirms the popular saying " there can be no peace without justice. " |

The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has said arrangements have been concluded for interested candidates to write the mock examination of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) this Saturday, April 29. The Registrar of JAMB, Is-haq Oloyede, made this known Wednesday in Abuja during a training session organized to equip over 1600 JAMB staff as well as external resource persons drawn across the 36 states of the country. Mr. Oloyede, a professor, said internal and external personnel would monitor the 633 Computer Based Tests centres across the country for the UTME exams. Mr. Oloyede said under his watch, JAMB would deploy cost-effective measures to deliver on its statutory mandate. He said the CBT adopted in the forthcoming UTME would save the examination body about N5 billion. “Instead of spending billions on our examinations, we can spend millions and achieve better results. That is all I have been struggling to do, to make sure that instead of collecting N7 billion and spending N6.8 billion in the conduct of examination, we should be able to save at least N5 billion,” he stressed. While noting that there are skepticism on the part of some Nigerians about the workings of new innovations, the Registrar said he was optimistic of taking JAMB to the next level, regardless of challenges. “Yes, some people argue that in Nigeria, there are many variables that you cannot determine. I have strong faith in this country and I believe that whatever works in normal places will work in Nigeria,” he added. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/229821-i-will-save-nigeria-least-n5billion-2017-utme-jamb-registrar-oloyede.html

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday amended the charges filed against Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s cousin, Robert Azibaola, and his wife Stella. Mr. and Mrs. Azibaola had prior to Thursday’s hearing been facing trial for the alleged diversion of $40 million on a seven-count charge. Following Thursday’s changes, however, the duo will now be tried on a nine-count for the same offence. The counsel to EFCC, Silvanus Tahir, told the court that the amended charges were dated April 19 and filed on April 20. Shortly after the charges were amended, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the fresh charge and the commission presented its witnesses. The case was later adjourned till Friday. The defendants have been accused by the commission of allegedly diverting the said sum through their company, OnePlus holdings. A witness earlier presented by the EFCC said the $400 million was allegedly paid through an account belonging to the office of the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, from monies earmarked for pipeline security contracts. The witness, Ibrahim Mahe, a former permanent secretary, special services operations, at the office of the NSA, had in a testimony before the court in July 2016 said that OnePlus Holdings Limited was paid $40 million from $600 million special security fund sourced from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/229799-alleged-40-million-contract-scam-efcc-amends-charge-jonathans-cousin.html

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that despite insinuations about his alleged poor health, there is no need for apprehension over recovery. Mr. Buhari spoke Thursday evening through a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba, explaining why he had been out of public glare for a while. The statement said, “President Buhari’s absence at the Federal Executive Council meeting of Wednesday, April 26, was a last minute decision; otherwise, the cabinet and the public might have been alerted in advance. As eager as he is to be up and about, the President’s doctors have advised on his taking things slowly, as he fully recovers from the long period of treatment in the United Kingdom some weeks ago. “President Buhari himself, on his return to the country, made Nigerians aware of the state of his health while he was in London. Full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation, as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, intimated in his press briefing after the FEC meeting on Wednesday. “Despite his lack of visibility, Nigerians should rest assured that President Buhari has not abdicated his role as Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria. “He receives daily briefings on the activities of government, and confers regularly with his Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo. His private residence, in which he has been spending the majority of his time recently, also has a fully equipped office. “God is the giver of life and health. We are grateful that He has seen our President through the worst period of his convalescence in London. We are thankful that the President has passed a number of benchmarks already. We pray that God continues to see him through this period of recuperation.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/229809-i-rarely-seen-public-president-buhari.html

Twenty seven days gone now in the month of Ramadan! How much has Ramadan affected you positively and how have you adjusted to the requirements of the month? What have you been doing that you would not want to do again? Would you like to continue doing what you always do in Ramadan? It is indeed a rewarding time. Muslims are expected to be better persons at the end of this month. That is why the Prophet advised that this month must not pass without Muslims seeking forgiveness of sins from Almighty Allah and turning out to be better persons. Therefore, a re appraisal is necessary at this junction. Fasting during this month is a way to protect you from evil and learn patience, humility and control over sensual and sexual desires. It is also considered to be a shield against evil and allows Muslims to get rid of sinful acts. The Prophet (S.A.W.) said: “Whoever fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah will have all of his previous sins forgiven.” So, we can say that with some degree of certainty that we are a new born, we have been cleansed of our sins and we should henceforth refrain from sins, maintain that status, help the needy Muslims and make the society better. One important benefit of fasting is that it helps you to understand the suffering and pain of the poor. It also allows human beings to understand how those who do not have enough money for a meal survive through the day. Therefore, it is believed that fasting makes individual a better person as it allows them to associate with the pain of others. No fasting Muslim will observe the Ramadan fast very well, keeping all the dictates and remain the same. It will no doubt leave us a better person both physically and spiritually. Besides, the Prophet (S.A.W.) was reported by Bukhari that Allah said: “The Fast is for Me and I will give the reward for it, as he (the one who observes the fast) leaves his sexual desire, food and drink for My Sake. Fasting is a screen (from hell), and there are two moments of pleasure (moments of happiness or joys) for a fasting person: one at the time of breaking his fast and the other at the time when he will meet his Lord. And the smell of the mouth of a fasting person is better in Allah’s Sight than the smell of musk.” The angels keep praying to Allah to forgive the fasting Muslims until they break their fast; Allah dangles Paradise every day saying to it ‘My righteous slaves are about to be comforted of their burdens and sufferings and enter you. May Allah you and I among those who will dwell in Paradise. Ramadan timing for today City Fajr Iftar/Maghrib Abuja 4:49am 6:53pm Ibadan 5:09am 7:05pm Ilesha 5:05am 7:08pm Ilorin 5:02am 7:05pm Kano 4:38am 6:53pm Lagos 5:10am 7:04pm Asaba 5:00am 6:55pm Zaria 4:45am 6:53pm Maiduguri 4:20 6:35pm Jalingo 4:35am 6:38pm Please, note that at Farj time, sahuur ends and Magrib time, Iftar begins. |
