•No, It’s Not True, Says Legislators THERE SEEMS to be no end yet to the war of words between the Ekiti State government and the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers as the two sides on Monday June 1, 2015 engaged each other over media report that the embargo placed by Governor Ayo Fayose on the salaries and allowances of the legislators had been lifted. The lawmakers, in a statement, accused the government of sponsoring the report, even as the government described as falsehood their position, adding that the legislators had acknowledged their payments last week. The APC lawmakers, in a statement by the Media Adviser to the Speaker, Wole Olujobi, said the report was mischievous and lacked the basic tenets of journalism. Olujobi’s reads: “It is shocking that those behind the media report chose not to believe us but overzealously believed the purported sources that thrive in falsehood, lies and propaganda while working for the government. “The reporter in one breath said his investigation revealed that the lawmakers had been paid, yet he reported that both Fayose and the lawmakers did not confirm the report as they refused to talk to him. “If this were the case, then who were the sources that confirmed to the reporter that the lawmakers had been paid? “To make matters worse, contrary to the reporter’s claim that we did not talk to him, we told him that we have not been paid. “Apart from getting this fact from us, the speaker’s media aide told him the same and so we are surprised that the reporter is claiming that he received no information from us. “In fact, as at Saturday night, the alerts we received from our bank were deficit alerts and so we wonder where the reporter got his story. “It is unfortunate that just because the reporter wanted to file an exclusive report for his paper, he went ahead to report this falsehood motivated by blackmail. “Let us even agree without conceding that we were paid our lawful entitlements, what favour does the governor do to us by that after illegally cutting short our tenure by seven months and putting us in harrowing inconveniences in addition to his brazen rape on the constitution of Nigeria? “Must payment of our legal entitlements prevent us from defending the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which we swore to protect? “Where are the indications of payment when embargo is placed on our accounts by the governor? “Even those who should know in government are wondering where the reporter got his story because there is never any payment to the lawmakers. “This is irresponsible journalism at its worst and it is unfortunate.’’ However, the government in a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Finance, Toyin Ojo, said: “We would have remained silent in deference to the agreement reached at the last Monday meeting in Akure that all parties should maintain silence on the outcome of the meeting, especially because the lawmakers said they do not want their leaders to know the outcome of the meeting. “However, since the lawmakers have chosen not to abide by this agreement by first issuing press statement to deny and reveal what was discussed in the meeting, and now going to the press to say that they have not received any payment, the government does not have any other option than to tell the public the truth and set the records straight. “The government is by this press statement putting the records straight since the money paid to the lawmakers belong to Ekiti people. “The payment was made in cheques because the lawmakers pleaded that their accounts should not be credited directly so as to avoid the banks from making deductions for loans taken from the banks. “Saying that they have not been paid is quite unfortunate and unbecoming of honourable members of the State House of Assembly and this is sad. “We will want to keep our fingers crossed and we wish to caution the lawmakers to adhere strictly to the spirit of the agreements. “Governor Fayose’s good gesture, aimed at ensuring peace in the state should not be abused.” source:www.dailyindependentnig.com/2015/06/paid-fayose-tells-apc-lawmakers/ |
Former Niger-Delta militant leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo, has said the 2015 general elections were the most rigged in Nigeria. He spoke on Sunday in Owerri, where he graced the Biafra Day celebration. He said figures clearly showed differnet levels of manipulation. “The elections were not free and fair. Also, the stage was set to manipulate the elections”, he said. Dokubo blamed the activities of Boko Haram insurgents on leaders from the Northern section of the country, mostly the Northern Muslims. He recalled that the elites in the zone vowed to make the polity unstable and ungovernable for ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan. He, however, blamed Jonathan’s loss on the use of card readers. “Our brother, Goodluck Jonathan refused to listen to us. To him, the life of any Nigerian was not worth his election or ambition. “For us, that was an abdication of his duties as President because we were also involved in the elections and we wanted a free and fair elections”, Dokubo said. He wondered why Jonathan, who could not vote even after four card readers were used, did not stop the election. “That was the time Dr. Jonathan ought to have taken action and stopped the fraud that INEC called an election. The Chairman of Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, Alhaji Baba Abare, on Sunday told journalists that the Boko Haram sect attacked two Yobe towns, Fika and Ngalda, on Saturday. Abare said the militants shot sporadically at the two towns to scare away people so as to have ample opportunity to loot. He explained that the major targets of the militants were shops in which they looted several food items as well as beverages, saying, however, that no life was loss during the attack. Fika is about 150 kilometres west of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, and shares boundary with Gombe State to the south. A resident of the area, Ibrahim Mohammed, who spoke on the telephone, said the terrorists first launched an attack on Ngalda, which is the Yobe/Gombe border town. He said they proceeded from Ngalda to Fika town, the headquarters of Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State. Mohammed said during the assault on Fika, the terrorists burnt down the local government secretariat, the magistrate court and the Divisional Police station. A policeman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to our correspondent, said the attackers invaded the two towns between 7.30 and 9am, looting several shops and cart away with several food items. He added that the militants stormed the areas in two Toyota Hilux vans and took away several motorcycles, which they stole in the area. The Yobe State Police Commissioner, Mr. Markus Danladi, declined to comment on the attack, saying the Military Joint Task Force was the only body that was authorised to speak on such matter. Fika and Ngalda communities have suffered several cases of Boko Haram attacks since the commencement of the sect’s violence campaign as the communities also share boundaries with Gujba and Gulani LGAs, which under the captivity of the militant group for so long before it was liberated few months back by federal troops. The newly sworn-in Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, on Saturday said that his government was ready to step on toes to change the status of the state for good. Ikpeazu said this during a thanksgiving service held in his honour at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Eastern Union Conference Headquarters in Aba. He, however, enjoined persons whose “legs are on the way to remove them before his arrival, in other not to have their toes stepped on”. “I want God to make Abians to understand that if you want to eat an omelette, you must be ready to crack eggs. “I thank God that I am courageous enough to take these decisions. God being with me, I will serve Abia and the people of Nigeria with the fear of God. “I will also take decisions that may not be very palatable but will let the guiding principle be, “Is it in the best interest of the greater majority of our people?’’ The governor noted that it was time to turn things in the state around, adding that it would no longer be business as usual. “We have travelled so long on the wrong path, probably by events not caused by governments but caused by our people. “This is the time to turn around because this is not going to be business as usual. “We must change the way we think, the way we do things, the way we build our houses, we must have respect for our neighbours; in doing so, we will be more responsible,” he said. Ikpeazu said that he came to the thanksgiving service to present his plans and programmes before God, so that He could touch Abians to take necessary steps to turn the state around. He said he would report for duty in Aba on Monday and visit Umuahia on Tuesday, adding that he would take time to inspect roads in both places and in Arochukwu. Dr Bassey Udoh, the President, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Eastern Nigerian Union Conference (ENUC), had earlier charged the governor to watch what he did in order not to displease God. Udoh, in his sermon titled “When God was Ready”, urged the governor to be wise, saying that he needed great wisdom to be safe in all he did. “If God has given you money and you do not have the wisdom to manage it, you will soon die. “If God has given you beauty and you do not have the wisdom to manage it, you will soon die. “If God has given you a position and you do not have the wisdom to manage it, you will soon die, so be careful what you do,” he said. Udoh added that God’s choice of an individual did not preclude such from mistakes, adding that the tendency to make mistakes should make God’s chosen ones to seek wisdom earnestly. The cleric took his reading from 1 Corinthians 1 : 25 – 29 and said that God’s choices were always different from man’s, adding that God’s foolishness beats man’s wisdom. He urged the governor not to fear because God was with him and would fight his battles for him, with no one being able to overcome him. Bishop Nathan Kanu, the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Aba, Ngwa-North, urged the governor to change the things that did not suit his plans for Abians. He called on all Abia people to join hands to make the governor successful, adding that God, who had called him, would sustain and help him. While delivering his goodwill message, a notable Abia statesman, Elder Emmanuel Adaelu, noted that the task before the governor was onerous and urged all Abians should ensure that he succeeded. About eight persons have reportedly lost their lives following a rocket launcher fired by the Boko Haram insurgents in Ngomari. DAILY POST gathered Nigerian troops from the 7 Division repelled the attack by the insurgents, who had attempted to take over Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in the early hours of Saturday. According to Usman Jani, the house located near EYN Church Ngomari was hit around 1:00 am when the battle was ongoing resulting in the death of eight occupants. A civilian JTF, Mohammed Sanda said they went out to support the military in repelling the insurgents, adding that the trenches dug around Maiduguri helped greatly in preventing the insurgents from advancing. “There is no way they can come into the city except through the main roads as the military has dug trenches all around the city and are being manned by troops. “When they came through Dala Kabamti, they were unable to pass because of the trenches; they started through RPG into the town. The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has accused the former governor Babatunde Fashola of being a failure, alleging that his administration was largely based on propaganda. The party, therefore, counselled his successor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to govern the state with the fear of God in order to move the state out of its “make- belief” situation. This was stated in a statement issued by PDP state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, adding that the party did not expect Ambode to act differently in terms of running his administration based on propaganda. Gani said: “While we hope the best for Lagos State, it is our objective projection that Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode may not depart from the propagandist government now institutionalised in the state by Governor Fashola. The party also advised the new governor to avoid the entrapment of ‘godfatherism’ for Lagos State to prosper. The party said: “It is, however our wish that the state prospers and so we admonish Ambode to get close to God and jettison ‘godfatherism’ in order to make any appreciable success. By upholding this tenet, Mr. Ambode will implement policies for the people and not continue in the manner that (suggests) the state economy is in the hands of a godfather. “With monthly internally generated revenue of at least N27bn, no governor should fail in Lagos State. But former Governor Fashola left office leaving the state with the highest local and international debt profile in the federation. “The former governor failed because of his overdependence on a godfather and his own self believe”, adding that so many projects were abandoned by Fashola. “Such include, lack of affordable low-cost housing, balkanised civil service with no minimum wage, unresolved Lagos State University crisis, economic and human rights violations. Others are shortage of road networks, hostile business environment, inability to bring down cost of living in the state, poor primary and secondary education standard, to mention a few,” the statement added. May 19, 2015, By Abiodun Alade. Media mogul and senator-elect, Ben Murray Bruce has stated that he is fighting the elite because they consume the resources of the country at the expense of the poor. Bruce, who is known to champion the cause of the masses, noted that it is absurd that a few elected officers monopolise the resources of the country, living a champagne life while majority of Nigerians live below a dollar a day. “I am fighting against the elite. Definitely, I am fighting them. When they drink that champagne that can educate a child, they should know that I am fighting them. You don’t fly a first class in government while in your private life, you fly economy. I am totally against their lifestyles,” he said in an interview with Vanguard. The chairman of Silverbird Group added that the level of poverty and unemployment in the country is devastating and more worrisome is the wide gap between the rich and the poor. Ben Murray -Bruce Ben Murray -Bruce “We need to enact laws that favour the masses. The biggest problem in Nigeria today is that our consumption is on the high while production is low. Our leaders in APC, PDP, Labour, APGA and others are all guilty of one thing, which is consuming the resources of the majority of Nigerians. ”Imagine a situation where governors fly private jets, commissioners drive a twenty million naira car. Commissioners flying first class, living like kings while the state cannot pay salary of its workers. If a commissioner can have three or four policemen around him, who is policing the poor where they are being raped, maimed, robbed and killed? “The question is what do we have for the masses? There are one hundred million people living on two dollars a day, in some places, the unemployment rate is 80 0r 90% and then you have governors living a champagne life. Small wonders in some places, thieves steal N50, N200, fishing nets and destroy the lives of the people”. Bruce who said that it is illegal for elected officers to live like kings and turn the electorates to beggars, argued that the consumption behaviour of public office holders in Nigeria cannot be justified because it is against moral and ethical norms. He expressed optimism that the administration of president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, will not use the wealth of the country to service the lifestyle of the elite. Don't take your eyes for granted. Protect your sight with these six tips: 1. EAT FOR GOOD VISION. Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might help ward off age-related vision problems such as macular degeneration and cataracts, studies show. Regularly eating these foods can help lead to good eye health: -Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and collards. -Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish -Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources. -Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices. Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you maintain a healthy weight, which makes you less likely to get obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults. 2. QUIT SMOKING. Smoking makes you more likely to get cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. If you've tried to quit smoking before and started smoking again, keep trying. The more times you try to quit smoking, the more likely you are to succeed. 3. WEAR SUNGLASSES. The right kind of sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure makes you more likely to get cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound lenses help protect your eyes from the side. Polarized lenses reduce glare when driving. If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV protection. It's still a good idea to wear sunglasses for more protection, though. 4. USE SAFTEY EYEWEAR. If you work with hazardous or airborne materials on the job or at home, wear safety glasses or protective goggles every time. Certain sports such as ice hockey, racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye injury. Wear eye protection (such as helmets with protective face masks or sports goggles with polycarbonate lenses) to shield your eyes. 5. LOOK AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER SCREEN. Staring at a computer screen for too long can cause: -Eyestrain -Blurry vision -Trouble focusing at a distance Dry eyes -Headaches,Neck, back, and shoulder pain. Taking the following steps to protect your eyes: -Make sure your glasses or contact lens prescription is up-to-date and adequate for computer use. Some people may need glasses to help with contrast, glare, and eye strain when using a computer. -Position your computer so that your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. This allows you to look slightly down at the screen. -Try to avoid glare on your computer from windows and lights. Use an anti-glare screen if needed. Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it so that your feet are flat on the floor. -If your eyes are dry, blink more. Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15- minute break. 6. VISIT YOUR EYE DOCTOR REGULARLY. Everyone, even young children, should get their eyes examined regularly. It helps you protect your sight and see your best. Eye exams can also find some eye diseases, such as glaucoma, that have no symptoms. It's important to find these diseases early on, when they're easier to treat. Depending on your eye health needs, you can see either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist for an eye exam. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye care. They can provide general eye care, treat eye diseases, and perform eye surgery. Optometrists have had 4 years of specialized training after college. They provide general eye care and treat the most common eye diseases. They don't do eye surgery. A comprehensive eye exam might include: -Talking about your personal and family medical history. -Taking vision tests to see if you have nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism (a curved cornea that blurs vision), or Presbyopia(age-related vision changes). -Tests to see how well your eyes work together. Eye pressure and optic nerve tests to check if you have glaucoma External and microscopic examination of your eyes before and after dilation. You might also need other tests.
