PoliticsYou Have Been Paid, Fayose Tells APC Lawmakers by Slingkey(op): 12:50pm On Jun 01, 2015
•No, It’s Not True, Says Legislators

THERE SEEMS to be no end yet to the war of
words between the Ekiti State government
and the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC)
lawmakers as the two sides on Monday June
1, 2015 engaged each other over media
report that the embargo placed by Governor
Ayo Fayose on the salaries and allowances
of the legislators had been lifted.

The lawmakers, in a statement, accused the
government of sponsoring the report, even
as the government described as falsehood
their position, adding that the legislators
had acknowledged their payments last
week.

The APC lawmakers, in a statement by the
Media Adviser to the Speaker, Wole Olujobi,
said the report was mischievous and lacked
the basic tenets of journalism.

Olujobi’s reads: “It is shocking that those
behind the media report chose not to
believe us but overzealously believed the
purported sources that thrive in falsehood,
lies and propaganda while working for the
government.

“The reporter in one breath said his
investigation revealed that the lawmakers
had been paid, yet he reported that both
Fayose and the lawmakers did not confirm
the report as they refused to talk to him.

“If this were the case, then who were the
sources that confirmed to the reporter that
the lawmakers had been paid?
“To make matters worse, contrary to the
reporter’s claim that we did not talk to him,
we told him that we have not been paid.

“Apart from getting this fact from us, the
speaker’s media aide told him the same and
so we are surprised that the reporter is
claiming that he received no information
from us.

“In fact, as at Saturday night, the alerts we
received from our bank were deficit alerts
and so we wonder where the reporter got
his story.

“It is unfortunate that just because the
reporter wanted to file an exclusive report
for his paper, he went ahead to report this
falsehood motivated by blackmail.

“Let us even agree without conceding that
we were paid our lawful entitlements, what
favour does the governor do to us by that
after illegally cutting short our tenure by
seven months and putting us in harrowing
inconveniences in addition to his brazen
rape on the constitution of Nigeria?
“Must payment of our legal entitlements
prevent us from defending the constitution
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which we
swore to protect?

“Where are the indications of payment
when embargo is placed on our accounts by
the governor?

“Even those who should know in
government are wondering where the
reporter got his story because there is never
any payment to the lawmakers.

“This is irresponsible journalism at its worst
and it is unfortunate.’’

However, the government in a statement
issued by the State Commissioner for
Finance, Toyin Ojo, said: “We would have
remained silent in deference to the
agreement reached at the last Monday
meeting in Akure that all parties should
maintain silence on the outcome of the
meeting, especially because the lawmakers
said they do not want their leaders to know
the outcome of the meeting.

“However, since the lawmakers have chosen
not to abide by this agreement by first
issuing press statement to deny and reveal
what was discussed in the meeting, and
now going to the press to say that they have
not received any payment, the government
does not have any other option than to tell
the public the truth and set the records
straight.

“The government is by this press statement
putting the records straight since the money
paid to the lawmakers belong to Ekiti
people.

“The payment was made in cheques
because the lawmakers pleaded that their
accounts should not be credited directly so
as to avoid the banks from making
deductions for loans taken from the banks.

“Saying that they have not been paid is quite
unfortunate and unbecoming of honourable
members of the State House of Assembly
and this is sad.

“We will want to keep our fingers crossed
and we wish to caution the lawmakers to
adhere strictly to the spirit of the
agreements.

“Governor Fayose’s good gesture, aimed at
ensuring peace in the state should not be
abused.”

PoliticsAsari-dokubo Explains Why Jonathan Lost Presidential Election by Slingkey(op): 5:02pm On May 31, 2015
Former Niger-Delta militant leader, Alhaji Asari
Dokubo, has said the 2015 general elections
were the most rigged in Nigeria.
He spoke on Sunday in Owerri, where he
graced the Biafra Day celebration.

He said figures clearly showed differnet
levels of manipulation.
“The elections were not free and fair. Also,
the stage was set to manipulate the
elections”, he said.

Dokubo blamed the activities of Boko Haram
insurgents on leaders from the Northern
section of the country, mostly the Northern
Muslims.

He recalled that the elites in the zone vowed
to make the polity unstable and
ungovernable for ex-President, Goodluck
Jonathan.

He, however, blamed Jonathan’s loss on the
use of card readers.
“Our brother, Goodluck Jonathan refused to
listen to us. To him, the life of any Nigerian
was not worth his election or ambition.

“For us, that was an abdication of his duties
as President because we were also involved
in the elections and we wanted a free and
fair elections”, Dokubo said.

He wondered why Jonathan, who could not
vote even after four card readers were used,
did not stop the election.

“That was the time Dr. Jonathan ought to
have taken action and stopped the fraud
that INEC called an election.

PoliticsBoko Haram Raids Yobe Towns, Steals Foodstuffs by Slingkey(op): 4:49pm On May 31, 2015
The Chairman of Fika Local Government Area
of Yobe State, Alhaji Baba Abare, on Sunday
told journalists that the Boko Haram sect
attacked two Yobe towns, Fika and Ngalda,
on Saturday.

Abare said the militants shot sporadically at
the two towns to scare away people so as
to have ample opportunity to loot.

He explained that the major targets of the
militants were shops in which they looted
several food items as well as beverages,
saying, however, that no life was loss during
the attack.

Fika is about 150 kilometres west of
Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, and shares
boundary with Gombe State to the south.

A resident of the area, Ibrahim Mohammed,
who spoke on the telephone, said the
terrorists first launched an attack on Ngalda,
which is the Yobe/Gombe border town.

He said they proceeded from Ngalda to Fika
town, the headquarters of Fika Local
Government Area of Yobe State.
Mohammed said during the assault on Fika,
the terrorists burnt down the local
government secretariat, the magistrate
court and the Divisional Police station.

A policeman, who spoke on the condition of
anonymity to our correspondent, said the
attackers invaded the two towns between
7.30 and 9am, looting several shops and
cart away with several food items.
He added that the militants stormed the
areas in two Toyota Hilux vans and took
away several motorcycles, which they stole
in the area.

The Yobe State Police Commissioner, Mr.
Markus Danladi, declined to comment on the
attack, saying the Military Joint Task Force
was the only body that was authorised to
speak on such matter.

Fika and Ngalda communities have suffered
several cases of Boko Haram attacks since
the commencement of the sect’s violence
campaign as the communities also share
boundaries with Gujba and Gulani LGAs,
which under the captivity of the militant
group for so long before it was liberated
few months back by federal troops.

Muhammadu Buhari but showered special
encomium on Okonjo-Iweala.

“I would like to specially thank Dr. Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala for her vital role and
tremendous effort in delivering this
successful outcome. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, as
Nigeria’s Finance Minister, worked
passionately for our campaign, and our
success would have been impossible
without her tireless work shepherding
support among many of the esteemed
Finance Ministers and Governors at the AfDB.

He then thanked all those involved in the
process for electing him. “I am deeply
humbled and honoured to have been
entrusted with the great responsibility of
leading the African Development Bank (AfDB)
at a time that presents such great
opportunities and also profound challenges
for our continent.

“The AfDB campaign and election has been
an incredible experience, and I am grateful
to all those who supported me along the
way and to each and every person with
whom I’ve met and exchanged ideas and
hopes for inclusive economic growth on our
continent throughout this process.

“I am thankful to have been given the
chance to travel to so many parts of the
continent – small states, fragile states, and
large states across Africa – to feel the pulse
of African leaders and peoples. I met with
young people and women – Africa’s greatest
assets, with small- and medium-sized
enterprises, and with Africa’s business
leaders. From rural areas to burgeoning
cities, I saw vast opportunities for a greater
and more inclusive Africa. I am hopeful and
excited about the prospect of building on
the great work of President Donald
Kaberuka at the AfDB,” he said.
Adding that: “Together, we can build a
stronger and more prosperous Africa, with
smart infrastructure, energy for all, a strong
private sector, new economic opportunities
that will deliver quality jobs and hope for
millions of youths and women, revival of
Africa’s rural economies to lift many out of
poverty, and regional integration for shared
prosperity.

“The shareholders of the AfDB from African
and non-African countries gave strong
support, for which I am deeply grateful.

Together, we will build a new Africa with
inclusive and green growth.

“I commend all my colleagues who
contested for the position, their countries,
and supporters. They conducted great
campaigns. They are all great assets to
Africa. I am truly humbled by the support of
many Presidents across every region of
Africa. Africa is my home.”

“I would like to give my special thanks to a
few people in particular without whom this
success would not have been possible:
former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan
for his nominating me, his confidence, and
his steadfast, enthusiastic support;
President Muhammadu Buhari for his strong
endorsement and rallying support for us.”
“Our leaders rallied behind us in a historic
display of unity of purpose and common
commitment. I would like to extend my
sincerest thanks to former President
Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State
General Abdulsalami Abubakar, former Head
of State General Yakubu Gowon, former Vice
President Namadi Sambo, and former Vice
President Atiku Abubakar, who worked
determinedly to build support behind my
candidacy among African leaders.”

“I would especially like to thank all the
people of Africa for your prayers, your well-
wishes, and your belief in me. I am truly
humbled by the outpouring of support I
have received from all across the continent. I
promise to work hard with all African
governments to deliver more inclusive
economic growth across our beautiful
continent,” the statement read.

PoliticsMy Government Will Step On Toes For Good Of Abians – Ikpeazu by Slingkey(op): 11:33am On May 31, 2015
The newly sworn-in Governor of Abia State,
Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, on Saturday said that his
government was ready to step on toes to
change the status of the state for good.
Ikpeazu said this during a thanksgiving
service held in his honour at the Seventh Day
Adventist Church, Eastern Union Conference
Headquarters in Aba.
He, however, enjoined persons whose “legs
are on the way to remove them before his
arrival, in other not to have their toes
stepped on”.
“I want God to make Abians to understand
that if you want to eat an omelette, you
must be ready to crack eggs.
“I thank God that I am courageous enough
to take these decisions. God being with me,
I will serve Abia and the people of Nigeria
with the fear of God.
“I will also take decisions that may not be
very palatable but will let the guiding
principle be, “Is it in the best interest of the
greater majority of our people?’’
The governor noted that it was time to turn
things in the state around, adding that it
would no longer be business as usual.
“We have travelled so long on the wrong
path, probably by events not caused by
governments but caused by our people.
“This is the time to turn around because this
is not going to be business as usual.
“We must change the way we think, the way
we do things, the way we build our houses,
we must have respect for our neighbours;
in doing so, we will be more responsible,”
he said.
Ikpeazu said that he came to the
thanksgiving service to present his plans
and programmes before God, so that He
could touch Abians to take necessary steps
to turn the state around.
He said he would report for duty in Aba on
Monday and visit Umuahia on Tuesday,
adding that he would take time to inspect
roads in both places and in Arochukwu.
Dr Bassey Udoh, the President, Seventh Day
Adventist Church, Eastern Nigerian Union
Conference (ENUC), had earlier charged the
governor to watch what he did in order not
to displease God.
Udoh, in his sermon titled “When God was
Ready”, urged the governor to be wise,
saying that he needed great wisdom to be
safe in all he did.
“If God has given you money and you do not
have the wisdom to manage it, you will soon
die.
“If God has given you beauty and you do not
have the wisdom to manage it, you will soon
die.
“If God has given you a position and you do
not have the wisdom to manage it, you will
soon die, so be careful what you do,” he
said.
Udoh added that God’s choice of an
individual did not preclude such from
mistakes, adding that the tendency to make
mistakes should make God’s chosen ones to
seek wisdom earnestly.
The cleric took his reading from 1
Corinthians 1 : 25 – 29 and said that God’s
choices were always different from man’s,
adding that God’s foolishness beats man’s
wisdom.
He urged the governor not to fear because
God was with him and would fight his
battles for him, with no one being able to
overcome him.
Bishop Nathan Kanu, the Bishop of the
Anglican Diocese of Aba, Ngwa-North, urged
the governor to change the things that did
not suit his plans for Abians.
He called on all Abia people to join hands to
make the governor successful, adding that
God, who had called him, would sustain and
help him.
While delivering his goodwill message, a
notable Abia statesman, Elder Emmanuel
Adaelu, noted that the task before the
governor was onerous and urged all Abians
should ensure that he succeeded.

PoliticsFashola Failed Lagosians – PDP by Slingkey(op): 10:36am On May 30, 2015
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP has accused the former
governor Babatunde Fashola of being a
failure, alleging that his administration was
largely based on propaganda.

The party, therefore, counselled his
successor, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, to
govern the state with the fear of God in
order to move the state out of its “make-
belief” situation.

This was stated in a statement issued by PDP
state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani,
adding that the party did not expect
Ambode to act differently in terms of
running his administration based on
propaganda.

Gani said: “While we hope the best for
Lagos State, it is our objective projection
that Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode may not depart
from the propagandist government now
institutionalised in the state by Governor
Fashola.

The party also advised the new governor to
avoid the entrapment of ‘godfatherism’ for
Lagos State to prosper.
The party said: “It is, however our wish that
the state prospers and so we admonish
Ambode to get close to God and jettison
‘godfatherism’ in order to make any
appreciable success. By upholding this tenet,
Mr. Ambode will implement policies for the
people and not continue in the manner that
(suggests) the state economy is in the hands
of a godfather.

“With monthly internally generated revenue
of at least N27bn, no governor should fail in
Lagos State. But former Governor Fashola
left office leaving the state with the highest
local and international debt profile in the
federation.

“The former governor failed because of his
overdependence on a godfather and his
own self believe”, adding that so many
projects were abandoned by Fashola.

“Such include, lack of affordable low-cost
housing, balkanised civil service with no
minimum wage, unresolved Lagos State
University crisis, economic and human
rights violations. Others are shortage of
road networks, hostile business
environment, inability to bring down cost of
living in the state, poor primary and
secondary education standard, to mention a
few,” the statement added.

PoliticsI Submitted Onu’s Name For SGF – Okorocha by Slingkey(op): 10:26am On May 30, 2015
Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has denied having any faceoff with a former Governor of Abia State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, over the choice of who becomes the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Okorocha cleared the air while addressing journalists at the Government House Owerri on Friday, adding that he has good relationship with Onu and that Onu’s name was among the three he submitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for consideration for the office of the SGF.

He said: “When Ndigbo lost the chance to produce the Senate President or the Speaker of the House of Representatives, which was initially zoned to the South-East, we then brought the idea of the SGF, I nominated Onu, Senator Chris Ngige and Prof. Anthony Anwuka (Secretary to Imo State Government). But this was before Buhari said he was not going to take any list from any governor.”

He declared that his second term in office will see him carry out comprehensive review of his administration’s policies to enable it serve people of the state better.

He, however, warned that the review may not go down well with the people.

“I may have to carry out certain decisions that the people may not like but I have to do it because of passion for good service to the people,” he said.

The governor asserted that it was not in the best interest of the people that major roads and streets in the state were covered by offensive refuse dumps, illegal motor parks, and street traders.

To this end, he insisted that his administration would inevitably step on some toes in order to restore the state to her premier position as the cleanest state in the federation through the relocating of road side mechanics, street traders and car dealers to conducive places of operation.

Okorocha posited that although he had won the affection of the people, he would not mind adopting any policy that would be tailored towards uplifting the well being of the people.

He, however, noted that his administration would in this second term emphasize more on building of industries and creation of job opportunities for the teeming unemployed youths.

While debunking speculation in some quarters that he would soon abolish his “Free Education Programmme,” he stressed that the gesture was sacrosanct and not negotiable.

The returned governor noted that the introduction of the Free Education Programme had tremendously assisted to reduce insecurity in the state assuring that “Free Education will continue and I will embark on policy education and also ensure that state’s parastatals are either effective and perform optimally or do not exist”.

Disclosing that over 50 Turkish investors would soon arrive the state to establish factories and agricultural institutions, he said that the state government on its part would create an enabling environment for investors to come into the state believing that “you must have to daggle a carrot for investors to come.”

At his inauguration for a second term at the Dan Anyiam Satadium, Owerri, Okorocha promised the people of the state to expect a vibrant government that would be committed to service, stressing that he kept his campaign promises to the people in the last four years.

He said: “Four years ago, I gave you my word. I told you that my word was my bond. I gave my people my word when I assured them that I would keep the citizens safe and secure within the four walls of our peace-loving state.

“In two years of the Rescue Mission, kidnapping, baby factory, armed robbery, including bank robbery and other violent crimes became a thing of the past. Those crimes have been eradicated from our great land”.

Judge of Lagos, Justice Funmilayo Atilade.

The governor in his inaugural address said
the 2015 general elections proved beyond
doubt that Lagosians could not be taken for
a ride anymore.

According to him, “One of the instructive
lessons from this last political campaign and
election is for all politicians never to take our
people for granted again. I would, more
than ever before; take you, the good people
of Lagos, along with me, in this journey of
renewed hope and prosperity at all times.”

Ambode also hit the ground running just as
he announced the creation of a new office
to be known as Ministry of Wealth Creation
and Employment. He explained that the new
ministry was in line with his campaign
promises and to specifically execute his
planned Employment Trust Fund, labour
exchange and entrepreneurship drive for
Lagosians.

Also created were the Offices of Civic
Engagement and Overseas Affairs and
Investment (LAGOS GLOBAL), both under the
Deputy Governor’s Office.

Governor Ambode commended Lagosians
for the opportunity given to him to serve as
the governor of the state, describing it as
the fulfillment of his destiny.

“My administration is prepared to take the
decisions needed to promote merit and
professionalism. To restructure where
required,
eliminate poor Human Resource practices
and accelerate the pace of reforms in the
spirit of good governance.

PoliticsWhy I’m Fighting The Elite – Ben Bruce by Slingkey(op): 11:10pm On May 19, 2015
May 19, 2015,
By Abiodun Alade.

Media mogul and senator-elect, Ben Murray
Bruce has stated that he is fighting the elite
because they consume the resources of the
country at the expense of the poor.

Bruce, who is known to champion the cause
of the masses, noted that it is absurd that a
few elected officers monopolise the
resources of the country, living a
champagne life while majority of Nigerians
live below a dollar a day.

“I am fighting against the elite. Definitely, I
am fighting them. When they drink that
champagne that can educate a child, they
should know that I am fighting them. You
don’t fly a first class in government while in
your private life, you fly economy.

I am totally
against their lifestyles,” he said in an
interview with Vanguard.

The chairman of Silverbird Group added that
the level of poverty and unemployment in
the country is devastating and more
worrisome is the wide gap between the rich
and the poor.

Ben Murray -Bruce
Ben Murray -Bruce
“We need to enact laws that favour the
masses. The biggest problem in Nigeria
today is that our consumption is on the high
while production is low. Our leaders in APC,
PDP, Labour, APGA and others are all guilty of
one thing, which is consuming the
resources of the majority of Nigerians.

”Imagine a situation where governors fly
private jets, commissioners drive a twenty
million naira car. Commissioners flying first
class, living like kings while the state cannot
pay salary of its workers. If a commissioner
can have three or four policemen around
him, who is policing the poor where they
are being raped, maimed, robbed and killed?
“The question is what do we have for the
masses? There are one hundred million
people living on two dollars a day, in some
places, the unemployment rate is 80 0r 90%
and then you have governors living a
champagne life.

Small wonders in some
places, thieves steal N50, N200, fishing nets
and destroy the lives of the people”.

Bruce who said that it is illegal for elected
officers to live like kings and turn the
electorates to beggars, argued that the
consumption behaviour of public office
holders in Nigeria cannot be justified
because it is against moral and ethical
norms.

He expressed optimism that the
administration of president-elect,
Muhammadu Buhari, will not use the wealth
of the country to service the lifestyle of the
elite.

HealthRe: 6 Tips For Eye Health And Maintaining Good Eye-sight by Slingkey(op): 11:24am On May 19, 2015
Seunvense:
Thanks 4 dis op
you're welcome sir
Health6 Tips For Eye Health And Maintaining Good Eye-sight by Slingkey(op): 9:41am On May 19, 2015
Don't take your eyes for granted. Protect
your sight with these six tips:

1. EAT FOR GOOD VISION.

Protecting your eyes starts with the food on
your plate. Nutrients such as omega-3 fatty
acids, lutein, zinc, and vitamins C and E might
help ward off age-related vision problems
such as macular degeneration and cataracts,
studies show. Regularly eating these foods
can help lead to good eye health:

-Green, leafy vegetables such as spinach,
kale, and collards.

-Salmon, tuna, and other oily fish

-Eggs, nuts, beans, and other non-meat protein sources.

-Oranges and other citrus fruits or juices.

Eating a well-balanced diet also helps you
maintain a healthy weight, which makes you
less likely to get obesity-related diseases
such as type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is the
leading cause of blindness in adults.

2. QUIT SMOKING.

Smoking makes you more likely to get
cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular
degeneration. If you've tried to quit
smoking before and started smoking again,
keep trying. The more times you try to quit
smoking, the more likely you are to succeed.

3. WEAR SUNGLASSES.

The right kind of sunglasses will help
protect your eyes from the sun's ultraviolet
(UV) rays.

Too much UV exposure makes you more
likely to get cataracts and macular
degeneration.

Choose sunglasses that block 99% to 100%
of both UVA and UVB rays. Wraparound
lenses help protect your eyes from the side.
Polarized lenses reduce glare when driving.

If you wear contact lenses, some offer UV
protection. It's still a good idea to wear
sunglasses for more protection, though.

4. USE SAFTEY EYEWEAR.

If you work with hazardous or airborne
materials on the job or at home, wear safety
glasses or protective goggles every time.
Certain sports such as ice hockey,
racquetball, and lacrosse can also lead to eye
injury. Wear eye protection (such as helmets
with protective face masks or sports
goggles with polycarbonate lenses) to shield
your eyes.

5. LOOK AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER SCREEN.

Staring at a computer screen for too long
can cause:
-Eyestrain
-Blurry vision
-Trouble focusing at a distance
Dry eyes
-Headaches,Neck, back, and shoulder pain.

Taking the following steps to protect your
eyes:
-Make sure your glasses or contact lens
prescription is up-to-date and adequate
for computer use.
Some people may need glasses to help
with contrast, glare, and eye strain when
using a computer.

-Position your computer so that your eyes
are level with the top of the monitor. This
allows you to look slightly down at the
screen.

-Try to avoid glare on your computer from
windows and lights. Use an anti-glare
screen if needed.
Choose a comfortable, supportive chair.
Position it so that your feet are flat on the
floor.

-If your eyes are dry, blink more.
Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by
looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At
least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15-
minute break.

6. VISIT YOUR EYE DOCTOR REGULARLY.

Everyone, even young children, should get
their eyes examined regularly. It helps you
protect your sight and see your best.

Eye exams can also find some eye diseases,
such as glaucoma, that have no symptoms.
It's important to find these diseases early
on, when they're easier to treat.
Depending on your eye health needs, you
can see either an optometrist or an
ophthalmologist for an eye exam.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who
specialize in eye care. They can provide
general eye care, treat eye diseases, and
perform eye surgery. Optometrists have had
4 years of specialized training after college.
They provide general eye care and treat the
most common eye diseases. They don't do
eye surgery.

A comprehensive eye exam might include:
-Talking about your personal and family medical history.

-Taking vision tests to see if you have nearsightedness, farsightedness,
astigmatism (a curved cornea that blurs vision), or Presbyopia(age-related vision
changes).

-Tests to see how well your eyes work together.
Eye pressure and optic nerve tests to
check if you have glaucoma
External and microscopic examination of
your eyes before and after dilation.

You might also need other tests.
